S2 File in Macintosh HD
A Couple of days ago I noticed there was a file in the Macintosh HD called S2. It is almost 14 MB and it is a text file. If I open it, it opens in TextEdit and it shows a lot of characters. At the very top it says STOP! Copyright 2001 Apple Computer. What is this file? I would like to delete it, but I do not want to delete any file that could cause my computer to stop working.
*EDIT* I was reading more into the file and although a majority of it is just characters, there are some words in there that are in both french and english and it has something to do with an iPod or iTunes as it says iPod in the file.

Thank you - J. RossYou must be new to Lightroom. Yes, the terminology can be confusing. The Lightroom program has been updated. The updated version is Lightroom 5.5. It has been updated to include new cameras and other changes. But that "update" comes in the form of a complete replacement program. That is the way it has been from the beginning with Lightroom. It's unfortunate that you have misunderstood that. But I hope this will help clarify for you.

Can't remove "~" File in Macintosh HD Folder
I restored my system using Time Machine from two different backups, the second of which took about 20 hours to restore a mere 40GB, which was unbelievable frankly, because of problems I've been getting and now, in the Macintosh HD folder, there is a file being created, about 640KB in size, that I can't delete. Every time I delete it, it's recreated a few seconds later. I have no idea why it's being created or how to get rid of it, but it's getting on my nerves quite a lot. Can anyone help me? When I go to delete it and have to type in my password, I'm told that it's for com.apple.desktopservices, if that's any help.

If there are several locked files in the Trash, you can unlock them all at the same time at the command line. Follow these steps:
1. Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities. Type: chflags -R nouchg Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.
2. Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.
3. Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.
4. Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window. Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.
5. Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.
6. Empty the Trash.
If the Trash does not empty or if you see a message in Terminal that says "usage: chflags [-R [-H | -L | -P]] flags file..." you most likely did not type the text in step 2 as indicated or did not leave a space. Repeat the steps if this happens. -
A file appeared a long time ago in my Macintosh HD. It's a document, named ~. What is it and how did it get there? Can I or should I delete it?
Thanks!Put in in the trash without deleting it and restart. Does a new file with the same name get created in the root folder? If so, then some startup process is doing that. I very much doubt though you'll see a new instance of -C created.
Assuming that nothing happens after the restart, you could pull the file back out of the trash and copy it to an external drive and then delete it from the hard drive. Watch for a couple of weeks to see if any program claims it needs access to that file. I also very much doubt that will happen.
If after a couple of weeks of regular use of your Mac you can't see any reason to keep -C, delete it from your external drive. Given the size, it may just be an aborted download of an HD movie. -
Hidden files in macintosh hard disks movies section
I have moved all of my files etc out of the macintosh HD movies section yet when I control click the movies section to display the folder contents it says that ther is 30 gb worth of data. yet I cannot see any files. files just seem to of dissappeared. I checked Mac osx help and followed on screen instructions to make all files visible etc. but still nothing, what can i do to find these files.

i have changed the access of library to WRITE ONLY and also i changed the access of system files to NO ACCESS FOR ANYONE in macintosh HD.then,suddenly it stopped working.i tried it shut down.then it didnot shut down.then i pressed ctrl+command+power button.then it was shut down.

Opening Illustrator 5.5 files on Macintosh 7.5.1
Hi,
I'm seeking advice on how to open Ilustrator 5.5 files on an old Macintosh Performa 580CD (7.5.1). These files were given to me on double density disks and I can only access their content on this specific computer. Unfortunately the computer does not have any version of Illustrator on it. Is there an easy/simple way I can open these files without having to purchase a copy of Illustrator 5.5 and install it on this computer?If you can access the files you can copy them to something more contemporary than DSDD disks, then open them with a more recent version of Illustrator on a more recent OS. Possible methods for converting the files would be: burn to CDR, Copy to external hard drive, email, FTP, normal Apple network transfer, web file transfer services such as Dropbox or Yousendit, and others. You might have to compress the files for some of these options, which means finding an OS 7.5.1 compatible compression utility.
For less than $20 you can buy a USB floppy drive, which could be the easiest and most reliable option. -
Files in Macintosh HD bold and won't open

the files in my Macintosh HD folder (when accessed from my Desktop) have a doubled font and they won't open.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Can I open Windows CS3 files in MacIntosh CS6?

I also have Windows XP and must upgrade to Windows 8.1. Someone said I must upgrade my Creative Suite because Windows 8.1 uses different drivers. I also must buy a new computer, printer and scanner. Is this true?
If I buy a MacIntosh computer and Creative Suite instead, can I still open my Windows CS3 files?

Transfer files between Macintosh Plus and Mac OS X
I recently bought myself a beatiful Mac Plus. Now I'd like to put some classic software to the guy, and why not, even some games. Start doing little work with the Plus.
So, what are the options here? How can I bridge the Macintosh Plus and my Lion-equipped iMac? Yes, that's pretty hard. My findings where posts about Ethernet-LocalTalk bridge hardware, Serial-to-USB adapters in order to perform a serial connection with Terminal and even getting a ZIP drive. And the most popular finding: A bridge Mac like a PowerBook G3 (Serial port + Ethernet connection).
Where can I start? I'd like to listen your experiences.
Tino.The first thing you need to do to play with any older - 1980's Mac is to use the external SCSI port. Find an external SCSI hard drive or Zip drive. Do not spend too much on the Zip drive in case it suffers from the 'click of death.' That is a technical term. Just get a return guarantee if you spend more than two bucks on the Zip drive.
You can make an external hard drive bay out of a CD-ROM case by pulling the optical drive out and replacing it with a hard drive. We never put the covers back on because they just slow us down while testing drives.
You will need to learn about SCSI ID assignments.
Once you have external SCSI options, you can take files to a bridge machine. A platinum G3 desktop makes a good transition machine, especially if it has a USB card.
The next thing to worry about is changing file structures. OS X will show a file as a generic executable file if it does not know what to do with it. Better to leave old files compressed with Stuffit until you get it to the Plus. Otherwise, OS X will tamper with it. There are smarter guys on that subject than me. I have the luxury of having several bridge machines so I have not had to learn the technical software/file structure side of what happens. I just know it happens and I change machines to get around the file corruption.

I am not able to find the files my scanner saves to Macintosh HD - Private - tmp - my user name. How do I find these files again? Once I scan something I have to save as and save it to a differnt location, but there are a few files I scaned and did not save as to a new location. I know they are on my computer somewhere but I can't find them.
Under the Finder, in the Go menu, select Go to Folder ...
and enter
/private/var
You will see the tmp folder as well as other folders.
You should be cautious about moving or deleting files inside the /private/var areas because if you do something to the wrong files, your computer may fail to boot. Programs should not be saving files to the /private area that any user needs to access. Something does not sound right about your installation of the scanner. -
Bloated pdf File from Macintosh Word?
When creating a pdf file from a Word file on a Mac the file size becomes huge. The same file converted to pdf using Acrobat on a Windows machine results in a much smaller file. For example I wrote a two page letter that included several photos:
Original file size: 12.9 MB
pdf created by Acrobat on Windows PC: 227 KB
pdf created by Acrobat on Mac (OSX10.10): 61.1 MB
pdf created by Mac: 61.2 MB

I have a trial version of Adobe Acrobat XI installed. I created the pdf files 4 different ways:
1) On my PC I used the "Print" menu then printed using the Adobe Acrobat option. Result: file size = 221 KB
2) On my Mac I used Acrobat, selected "Create pdf" from the "File" menu, selected the Word document, and clicked "Save". Result: file size = 61.1 MB
3) Also on my Mac I opened MS Word, selected "Print" then created a pdf using the "Save as pdf" open: Result: file size = 61.2 MB
4) Just now I tried the method you suggested. From within Word I selected "Print" then "Save as Adobe pdf" from the print menu. Result: file size = 209 KB.
It worked great. The "Create pdf" in the "File" menu was the problem. Thank you so much.
