S20 Hard drive - maximum size?

Hi Folks - I'd like to fit 2x 2TB drives in my S20, but our IT procurement department says the computer will only support 1TB drives maximum. Is this right?

2TB drives are supported.
Are you using any sort of RAID with the 2x2TB config? There's a limitation (BIOS) that the bootable partition size can't go above 2.2TB. So 2x2TB would be OK with a mirrored RAID1 config, but not OK with a striped RAID0 config. This only applies to the bootable partition so if you're strictly doing a data RAID, you would be OK with either.

Yes, the model 5,1 can use a 12.5mm high hard drive. There's no limit to the GBs of the drive only the physical height. This is the only MacBook model that can use that high of a drive. All the rest are limited to 9.5mm high.

External Hard Drive Maximum Size for HAP-Z1ES

You have no category for your new line of DSD players, and in particular, the Sony HAPZ-1ES. You should get on this, because it sends the wrong message, mainly that you are not putting much effort into this new product, which is not exactly the message Sony should be sending.
It's clear that this is a good product, and one that many are going to be interested in, once they learn about it. It's already beginning to create a lot of buz online, and people are asking a number of technical questions about it that are not answered in the current Sony manual for it. In particular, no one seems to know what the maximum external hard drive can be for the HAP-Z1ES. People have successfully formated a 2TB drive, but what about a 3TB drive or a 4TB drive. In looking at the format instructions for the Sony format software (the HAPZ-1ES can only be formatted with Sony software), it doesn't say anything about this issue. DSD files take up a lot of hard drive space. It would be useful for many to know if they can buy a 3TB or 4TB drive for the HAP-Z1
ES. I suggest someone from Sony help answer these questions for all the folks who are buying this excellent unit.

I have AIFF files, but have not copied them over yet. I have a 2tb harddrive installed and have had no problems. The questions I would ask are: I assume your trying the Sony format system on the HAP-Z1ES. Maybe you can take the drive and reformat it with your computer and then try re-formatting it with the Sony. You can also see your files on your computer network if the Sony is part of the network.

Maximum hard drive physical size for MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 model

I'm planning to replace the hard drive in a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 - its the latest model just purchased.
I've searched the discussions on replacing the hard drive, and I've seen conflicting information on whether the 13.3" Macbook Pro will accept the 12.5mm height drives, or only the 9.5mm height drives.
And Apple support is no help - they don't know.
Can someone confirm exactly, whether the 12.5 mm drives will fit or not?

I think that my confusion is related to the mac terminology that you guys are using that I am not familiar with yet - I'm brand new to the world of Apple and Macs, so I've got a lot to learn ahead of me.

In another thread, you mentioned that you have 2 drives in your MacBook Pro. Is there really room for more than a single drive inside, or did you have to remove the optical drive and put the second drive in its place?

I pointed out that they have several documents at the "Manuals" section of their website, explaining the exact steps to replace the hard drive (as well as memory and battery too), with no mention of voiding the warranty.
Is Apple support always so out of touch with their own web site and their own equipment/policies, or are they usually quite knowledgeable and helpful? "OrangeMarlin", you mentioned cloning the old drive first, and I plan to do that. The MacBook Pro is brand new, and has not been used yet, so there is no user data to be lost yet, but it would still be easier to clone the drive than try to install from scratch and hope that everything gets installed the same way as the factory drive came packed with.
While on the topic of cloning the drive and backups, I have plenty of external drives to do backups onto, but how do I go about doing backups/cloning? I've heard of "time machine", but it looks like I need a whole dedicated hardware system of some sort in order to use it? Or can I use it with any external hard drives? Or is there a better/preferable backup tool to use, and does it come with the mac, or must I get it separately?

Copy fonts to hard drive causes size to be zero k.

We use fonts from various customers. They reside with other files on a file server. When needed, we copy to local hard drive to activate using Suitcase Fusion 3.
We have noticed that sometimes the Font Suitcase file loses its size when copied. We can open the fonts over the network ok, but when copied to the local drive they are whacked.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Somehow, the fonts are getting their resource forks stripped when copied from the server to the Mac desktop. All Mac legacy suitcase style TrueType fonts and Type 1 PostScript fonts have their data in the resource fork. So when those get lost, there's nothing left. Hence the zero byte files.

How to Find all folders on hard drive by size

I'm trying to clean up my internal hard drive (232gb). I've been opening up misc folders and getting size info. Still missing about 60 Gig. I seem to remember, back in the day, there was a way to get a list of all folders on a drive listed in order of file size. Is this a possibility?
Also speaking of back in the day, why don't I need to optimize my Hard Drive and is fixing permissions the same thing.

Hard drive screw sizes

I am expanding my Mac with additional Hard disks. I need to know the size of the screws used to install 3.5" (IDE/SATA) hard disks.
Specifics like thread gauge would be helpful, or even a good place to pick these up online.

Your G5 should have extra mounting screws installed in the case next to the hard drive bay...just waiting for you to use them. If you're replacing your original drive you'll just re-use the screws from the old drive.

Mac can't recognize hard drive, and size shrunk from 128gb ssd to 1.87gb in disk utility

so my macbook air 2012 got the flashing question mark folder icon and i called apple. they said that it was becuase the mac can not recognize the operating system? or hard drive? Anyways, so i googled stuff and people recommended multiple things like holding option while booting, and others so i tried all of them but none of them worked. so i tried the command + r to go to recovery. i went to recovery and went to disk utility and went on the information tab of my hard drive since disk utility won't let me click any other option and it says that my ssd is only 1.87 gb big. It is originaly 128gb ssd.. so i tried clicking the hard drive and then restore, but none of it is working (it wont even let me click the option, grayed out). I just want to delete the whole storage and reinstall OS X, but it would be better if i can somehow retrieve my files. Can someone help me with this issue? thank you.

Hard drive suddenly lost 1/2 size

My external hard drive was 60gb last nite now my computer reads it as 31.4gb, my pc also reads it the same. I had some back up errors so i decided to delete the files on it and format it. well that didnt help, when i run the disk utility it say there is one partiton but i cannot see it? how can i get my hard drive total size back???

I suggest zeroing out the entire disk and then re-formatting it. Sounds like your MBR/partition table got hosed.

Can I swap the hard drive from MacBook Pro 17 (2009) to MacBook Pro 15 (2006)?

My MacBook Pro 17 (2009) died. Pushing the power button gets no response. I had had problems with it for some time turning it on, it usually taking many many tries. Plus when I'd try to do a restart after updating software, instead of doing so it'd shut off super quick with a *pop* sound. There was never any of the typical hard drive going bad sounds I've read about and seen in videos. Since it has refused to turn on I've gone through every suggestion I can find to get it to turn back on. Unhook the battery and try starting from just the power cord; the shorting the power pads move; some thing undoing the battery, counting to 10, and then the next steps now escape my memory, but doing more counting to 10 inbetween; unplugging the battery and leaving it sit for 2 days with no power cord plugged in either, then hook it to a power cord and turn it back on; and so many more.
Also the symptoms just before this fiasco were as follows: I had a CD in the internal drive and was browsing through the images on it via the handy previewer using the space bar. Then I decided to quite, tried ejecting the CD by dragging the icon to the trash, and nothing. I tried again. The same. Then I pushed on the eject key, with the ejct icon popping up on the screen momentarily, but still nothing. Then it appreared as though some things worked and other things were not working. In my frustration I went to the Apple menu and clicked restart with a wince knowing it was going to take forever to turn back on. It did the usual quickly off with a *pop* and made super short lame attempts to turn back on when using the power button. Of course the CD kept trying to spin for a split second and then the little indicator light on the front would go out, then no noise at all.
Since I do not believe it is the hard drive (of course I could be wrong not being a Mac nerd at all), I was wondering if I can switch the hard drive to my Macbook Pro 15 (2006)?
I tried this, but it would not read the hard drive. Just a blank grey screen. If it is possible to do this swap, what are the exact steps to do? Please answer like I'm completely illiterate on this, because I really am. I'm super scared of losing everything on the dead MacBook's hard drive. Yeah yeah, I know: then why have I not been backing things up? I had the week prior. Believe me I WILL be doing it daily from now on if I get this mess straightened out!

OGELTHORPE really sorry to keep bugging you, but it's obvious you know what you are talking about and I'm stuck on thin ice here getting this fixed, because there are no authorized Apple reps here. These are all cost effective enough that I don't care the price - cheap, expensive - whichever will work the BEST!
I've also looked for the 7200 rpm HDD, and although I found some, I'll be danged if they are not 3.0, instead of the 2.5 that I have. Grrrr! I was willing to spend the $90 for 1tb... or being the non-techie that I am, can this 3.0 go into my 2006 MBP??

Another newbie question: How do I check what the amount if RAM is presently installed in it? (I might be a greenhorn, but I take pride in not being a dumbie and I learn when taught)
Right now, I'm willing to spend almost anything. I want a few files that are on the HDD at the moment that I was stupid and did not backup on my external. One file I worked on all day due to the dimensions I had to design it at and each effect took a long time to render. I really don't want to do that one again!.. I'm also willing to spend anything that won't cost me the price of a new iMac. Figure that should be the next one I buy that is affordable, but won't be overworked like the MBP was.

Fix my hard drive - Disk Utility won't repair

I have a powerbook g4 1.5 17" 1.5 gig ram
it has annnn 80gig hard drive
it's only about a year or 2 old
now recently i've been having hard drive trouble
when i play movies off the hard drive they kinda freeze up and stuff, not cos of the file but the hard drive it's like they're copied onto a bad sector or something.
i have files such as pictures and movies that i try to move or copy but they wont let me, or they get half way and cant copy the rest....
oh i was using bit-torrent to download some big files and it kept stuffing up with a hard drive read/write error
now the 1.7 gig i just downloaded wont open or copy to somewhere else to open it
and thats not good
so i've tried Disk Utility and got it to Verify the hard drive and it recognises some errors and stops scanning and says you need to fix it
i think one of them is a checksum/table error or something or.... i will have to get the exact error message off it later. but it tells me to fix it but i can't press the 'repair' button cos it's not available to be clicked! so that's a bugger
is there another program i can get off version tracker to help fix this or something else i can do? any way to try and recover that huge file too?
let me know what you think and i'll give u any more info that you need cos i definately dont wanna replace the hard drive!

i'm worried that my dvd restore discs will have 10.3 on them and it wont be compatible.. although i'm not sure, does anyone know what it originally shipped with?

Windows did not detect any networking hardware, Windows 7, New Hard Drive

Satellite P505 S8980 Windows 7 Home Premium.
I replaced the Toshiba 500 GB HD with 500 GB Seagate.
Device Manager icon for any device with yellow exclamation mark,
Click on "Update Driver". Lan eNet details as follows:
Antheo - R8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)
Browse to the folder where the setup program has the driver...
Message: "The best driver software is already installed."
(But the yellow exclamation mark still harasses me.)
--- Go to "Setup new connection" ---
"Choose a connection option"
Click on "Connect to the Internet"
Response: "Windows did not detect networking hardware"
As near as I can tell, that translates from error 0x8E5E0247
I have this same error on other yellow exclamation marks respective of what kind of device it is.
=> To test my sanity, I put the old hard drive (same size) back in and except for the impact of slowness due to error retries, everything works okay.
Note:
Same issue (hardware not detected) for Video adapter and Audio.
I bought new USB Wireless adapter to test, and the driver installed but not activated because "not digitally signed", and that same issue fits all the above hardware. I down loaded them from Toshiba, and they are confirmed installed, but not accepted with digitally signed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled with same results.

I'm discovering I am not as well as I thought... running on the AF hard drive which was built with a copy drive from old format drive which was the product of system recovery disc set.
Review for context: Advanced Function HDD
Scenario that exposes harm caused by cloning data from 4K blocks drive to 512 bytes blocked drive (AF)
Toshiba supplied Windows-7 System Restore Discs: to factory state
Then I built the Windows-7 Repair Disc... used later.
Hard drive was replaced when it caused SMART warning at every system boot.
Acronis was only utility that quickly detected problem (3 sectors had permanent read errors.) Active@Disk Image and Power Quest Drive Image (Ghost) did not detect the issue.
I tried Seagate 500 GB and Western digital 500 GB HDD drives as copy target.
That new drive would not boot: "Required source not found"
Booted My newly created Windows-7 repair disc, and used to to fix startup.
See images.
That worked and then the ST9500423AS disc booted.
Now... next day I discovered Window Update is not working.
I get message:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You need to restart your computer.
I ran Microsoft Fixit for updates. It says it fixed two items.
I still have the problem.
The service shows "started"
Control Panel/ ACTION Center/ Maintenance/ Check for Updates
"No action needed"
"Windows Update does not require any action"
I checked Update History...
... It is empty, else window is vacant... blank.
Soooo..... for a sanity check, I swap out hard drive; go back to the old format (which is the one I copied).
It works! 7 updates to install, including SP1... but I did NOT install them.
Switch back to the AF drive... Update doesn't work. I am broke again.
Is this another strange problem caused by the Advance Format issue?
What to do?
By the way... I did install an Intel storage Matrix driver update, but I do not have RAID chip, so that driver is not for me... unless I missed out on something.

Hard drive space disapearing in front of my eyes

I am new to the world of mac's and have ony just moved across from PC.
And i must say i am loving the mac, and wish that i moved across before.
But, I have noticed that i have used a lot of HD space, which i cant work out.
finder is saying that i have used 179gb out of 500. which as i have open in "get info" it is going up by small amounts, with the mac not doing any thing.
I have looked at all my folders and i am not using any more than 150gb
where is it going to? it is possiable i have mac virus?

I have experienced the same thing myself. I've been asking for advice on it for years here on various Macs. I've wasted my time on various programs to get a report, still no answer.
Generally Macs have a tendency to cache everything, particularly the I-programs. I-Tunes and I-Photo make multiple copies of the original material. Safari seems to cache even when you aren't doing anything (though it deletes when you quit). More complex programs also cache. I found Adobe After Effects sending a cache to my main hard drive in Gbs.
Sort your hard drive by size. Look in the big folders. With a little experience, look in the folders that grow. Logically that is how you find what is growing.

I'm considering adding an additional hard drive to my Mac Pro. What should I look for? Does hard drive buffer size affect latency?

The main thing that will affect latency is the data transfer rate of your drive. Generally, Firewire is fast enough to make latency negligible, but e-SATA is much faster. Don't use USB if you want to avoid latency problems.
You'll get a lot of different/conflicting ideas on what brands to buy, I'd recommend going to amazon.com or somewhere you can read user reviews of the products.

Hard drive upgrade limits????

I have a 13" MPB mid 2010 model and am looking to upgrade the hard drive. Is there a limit to the size of hard drive that I can use? I was hoping to upgrade from my 250GB to a 1TB hard drive, would that work?

As long as it's a 2.5" serial ATA (SATA) hard drive, any size will work. Confirm that the height of the replacement drive is the same as what you have installed today. Should be 9.5mm. In notebook hard drives, I like thw Western Digital Scorpio Black drives, which come with a 5 year warrany.
