S20 - WD RE4 hdd compatibility and RAID 1

I recently acquired an S20 and am looking to make good use of it. I am planning on using it as my home comp. I am intersted in two things:
HDD compatibility - I am looking into the Western Digital RE series (non green) and wondering if these will work (2Tb each) since the RAID will require TLER (I've always used WD Black - this will be my first RAID setup)
RAID 1 - Is this something setup in BIOS, Lenovo ware, or Win 7 (Pro or Ult). If I do get an adapter what is a good "inexpensive" (read: uesd/older) reliable brand model to use for a Raid 1? (This could also be moved later to a RAID 10 setup on a different project...maybe...)
Okay...three...
RAID 10 - Only with an adapter right? My original intended use of this unit was a home "Server"/"NAS"/'false hope that my data wont disappear" which I planned to use RAID 10...until I did my homework on the unit (3 bays). Would this units PSU be capable of handling this?  Even with a controller card am I still limited to <2.2Tb each or can I use up to 4-6Tb drives for this purpose only (only need 2Tb in the home comp scenario)?
I'm not a business, I'm sure this is waaaay out of Warranty, I'm not concerned with anything other than will it work....

welcome to the forum!
RAID 1 is dead simple and can easily be handled by the built-in intel ICH10R controller.   TLER shouldn't be an issue.   i have two 2TB WD RED drives in RAID 1 in my C20 (on ICH10R) and haven't had an error or sync issue in two years.
RAID 10 will be a problem for two reasons.   first, fitting four HDDs inside the S20 will be a mechanical challenge.   even if you could squeeze four inside the chassis, cooling will be a problem to this since RE4 drives are 7200RPM and run hotter than their lower RPM counterparts.   second, RAID 10 using four 2TB drives will create a 4TB array and won't be supported by the BIOS.   the largest size partition will be limited to ~2.2TB as you said.
i would stick with RAID 1 and either look into external NAS or consider another system upgrade if/when you run out of storage space.   the 30-series and P-series systems are UEFI and support >2.2TB partitions.

  • SSHD Hybrid drives and Raid 0 for Premiere

I am looking for a little support and help as I would like to expand both the capacity and speed of my current editing setup.
I intend on using 2x Momentus XT Hybrid SShD 750gb to give me 1.5tb of very fast storage, and buying a cheap 2tb drive to manually make backups.
I edit mainly DSLR footage in cs5.5, but I 've noticed large slow down in applying effects and rendering as my current 1tb drive fills up.
I've looked around the internet for some answers specifically about this scenario, and whether it would suit to enhance video editing.
I am currently using windows 7 home premium.
    Gigabyte x58a-ud5
    intel i7 920
    12gb corsair ram
    gtx 470
    I am currently using:
    C:128 Corsair ssd force 3
    D:Seagate Barracuda 7200
    C:OS,Pagefile,Premiere and programs, media cache
    D:Everything else
    Thanks

I did a quick render test.  It is rendering okay when I am applying basic colour correction.  The CPU is going between 20% and peaking at 80%, so this would indicate that the CPU is maybe not the bottleneck currently.
The ram is using 6 gb at max, of 9 gb made available for use by Premiere in the preferences.
I will definately clean up my drives and defrag very soon, as I am finishing off a short film project where I have been using 10 bit uncompressed footage.  That should free up some space!
I am interested about your other suggestion about getting the hdd drives and raid 0.  I have done a little research recently on the forums, and had a look at the optimum disk configuration for various systems depending on the number of disks available.  Now, my understanding is that you want to try and spread the load over a number of disks.  I am noticing now that a few people are using SSD's, and submitting these as suggestions for disk configurations.
I am considering the idea of buying a couple of small capacity SSD's, (maybe with the marvel controller, that Harm I believe mentioned is better than sandforce for robustness), and in Raid 0.  I would use this for my media cache/render preview/pagefile section.  Even 2x 60gb ssds striped to provide 120gb, would be more than enough for my standard workflow.  Also, if the array goes down, its just temporary cache anyway right?
Why would I use a 1tb 7200rpm drive, when I could go this route instead?  I know the 1tb drive would be cheaper, but isn't speed of the essence here?  I read a comment that Harm mentioned that "most speed requirements is for scratch, temp and pagefile".  I think with a bit of housekeeping, I can delete old render previews, media cache and database entries, and have plenty of room left over with the kind of projects I work on.  I'm using around 60 gb for that section right now.
I am thinking now of ditching the hybrid sshd plan, and going for 2xssd low capacity raid 0, and a 3 tb drive as an archive to free up my 1tb drive for footage, exports, and maybe projects.
I am interested to hear whether I am being sily to bother striping 2ssds with my modest setup.  Will my motherboard bottleneck somewhere first?
I could just get another couple of 1tb drives, but I feel like I want to challenge that approach as SSD technology and prices have come a long way.  SSDs support trim in Raid 0, so whats stopping us?
Also, I may point out that I am looking to upgrade at some point the whole architecture of my PC.  I am thinking about the GTX 760 in the near future.

A Fusion Drive is not a RAID; it's a CoreStorage logical volume group. While it's technically possible to do as you suggest, there would be little or no benefit from it.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • Satellite A200-1S5 - Can I use a second HDD and RAID?

    Hi all,
Is Toshiba Satellite A200-1S5 eligible for adding a second hard drive? It has RAID controller as far a I know - could it help?
    Thanks,
    Denis

The Satellite A200-1S5 does NOT support RAID!!!
But some A200 could use two HDDs (but NOT RAID!!!) There are different A200 models which supports different hardware specifications.
Therefore you can find the second bay at the bottom of the unit.
But if there is no connector for second HDD then this means that there is no second HDD controller and you cannot use second HDD in this A200!!!
    Bye

  • Advice on RAID Sets, Volume Sets, and RAID Levels of the Volume Sets using an Areca Controller

I have read through a lot of information on disk usage, storage rules for an editing rig, users inquiries/member responses in this forum and I thank each and every one of you – especially Harm.
In building my new workstation, I purchased five (5) WD 1T, 7k, 64M SATAIII hard drives and an Areca RAID card, ARC-1880ix-16-4G, which I plan to use primarily as my media/data disk array.  The workstation will use a 128GB SATAIII SSD as the OS/program drive and I will transfer two (2) WD Raptor/10k SATA 70GB drives from my current system for pagefile/scratch/render use.  I tentatively plan on using a mobo SATAIII port for the SSD and mobo SATA ports with a software RAID (level 0) for the 10k Raptors.
In reading the Areca Instruction manual, I am now considering exactly how I should configure the 5 physical 1TB drives in terms of RAID Level(s), Volume Sets, and RAID Sets.  I must admit that I like the opportunity of allowing for a Dedicated Hot Spare as I am generally distrustful of the MTBF data that drive vendors tout and have the bad experience in the past of losing data from a mal-configured RAID array and a single drive hardware failure (admittedly, my fault!).
In line with the logic that one doesn’t want to perform disk reading while trying to write at the same time (or vice-versa), I am thinking the approach above should work OK in using the mobo disk interface and both software and external hardware RAID controllers without having to create separate RAID level configurations within a Volume Set or further dividing up the physical drives into separate RAID sets.  I know in forum messages that Harm noted that he had 17 drives and I could envision a benefit to having separate RAID sets in that situation, but I am not at that point yet.
To some degree I think it might be best to just create one RAID Level on one Volume Set on one RAID Set, but want to solicit thoughts from veteran controller users on their workflows/thoughts in these regards.
Anyone care to share thoughts/perspectives?  Thanks
    Bill

Thanks for the speedy feedback Harm - I appreciate it.
I was thinking RAID level 3 as well.
Of course, it's always something!   I purchased the Caviar Blacks by mistake - which are non-TLER.   I will work with EggHead to return the ones I purchased and replace them with RE4 versions  as I'm not thrilled about the possibility of the controller declaring the volume/disks degraded unnecessarily and although I have the DOS utility WDTLER where one is supposed to be able to enable/disable TLER on WD drives  - I suspect WD is way beyond that now anyway with current builds.
I agree with you about just testing the performance of the options for the raptors - on the mobo and then on the controller.  When I benchmark them I'll post the results in case others are curious.
    Thanks again....off to EggHead!

  • MOVED: Overclocking and RAID, do they mix???

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
Overclocking and RAID, do they mix???

What board do you have?  It makes a difference in this case.  For example, the Via K8T800 based boards do not have PCI/AGP locks, so raising the FSB overclocks all the other components as well, including the HDD controller, and it has been observed that for these boards, RAID arrays will become unstable at FSB settings above about 225 MHz, at most, so overclocking and RAID do not really gotogether on these boards.  The nforce3 based boards, on the other hand, should have PCI/AGP locks, though I think (but I'm not sure) that you have to explicitly enable them in BIOS, and I've seen some threads questioning whether or not they actually work, so again the board might have problems with high FSB settings, although I'm pretty sure an nforce3 board would have a working lock and thus be able to overclock with a RAID array defined.  Finally, if you have a nforce4 based board, it should definately have a functional lock on it, and it should handle the RAID just fine when overclocking.

  • Premiere and Raid 0

    Hi Everybody,
As i know that Adobe says that premiere will work in a more efficient way with two hard drive (one for the system and one for the rushes) I would like to have your help on this point:
I am going to work on a new laptop (with premiere pro cs3) that contains two hard drive (it is one of my criteria for this purchase) and the system allow me to put them in Raid 0. Those hdd run at 5400 t/m (unfortunately it is very difficult to find laptop with hdd at 7200t/m or they are too much expensive).
So do you think it is better to let work premiere with two "slow" hdd (one for system, one for rush) or to put them in Raid 0 for that the system will consider them as only one hdd, as I have understood so far, but that will be more fast (in pratical 1,5 faster if I have well understood, because the system write a file in the same time on the two hdd, one part on each of them) ?
To resume my question, do you think it is better to have 2 "slow" hdd or one faster hdd to make premiere work more efficiently ?
I thank you in advance for your kind help for a newbie,
    Videocol.

    Hi again,
Thanks so much to Harm, Jim and Steven for their fast answer, interest in my question and their precious comment. I understand perfectly the solution you're talking about but maybe I should precise my question.
In fact the security of my data is not a problem in this situation, because i have a desktop pc (at my work in a school) where i mainly develop my project and all the data are well secured (as well as it could be :-) with 2 internal hdd 7200 t/m plus daily backup of the rushes and works on differents external hdd keeped in different places (at work and at home, in case fire make burn one of this place !).
On my laptop (just for home), I just want to make little project or finish a part of the work done at work. I know the problem with loosing data on the 2 disks in the same time with raid 0 indicated by Harm, but as i said this is not a problem because the data are well saved at work (and even at home) because I make often backup on different external hdd. And if ever I loose a few hours of work on the laptop, and it has already happen believe me ! OK, that's life ! I just have to do this little work again. But with the other copy I have, I don't loose too much. So I really can handle this problem of security and I have really thought to it (especially after loosing some important editing work in the past years, I have decided to take this problem seriously).
My problem is that I'm not looking for a professional editing tool on my laptop (It is just a part of what I do with) and I want to let it the more mobile possible: edit in the garden with the birds inspiring me, explaining some AE tricks in a friend's home... So I precisely don't want to work with an external hdd. I wish that all my data stay on my internal hdd to be independent and take my laptop where I go with nothing more to carry with it. That's why I buy a 2 internal hdd laptop. To give you a stupid example, I often edit on the sofa (it's more confortable :-) with the laptop on the top of my lap (i'm a little bit lazy as you might have understood :-). In this case it is really not handy to have an external hdd attached to the laptop. Even my mouse is bluetooth to tell you I really hate all those horrible cables I have at work (it's why I work with a laptop at home).
So in those conditions, even if they are not the best way to work in a professional and secure manner, and if I really prefer to work only with the 2 internal hdd of my laptop, do you think it is better to let them independent with one for system and one for rushes, or to put them on raid0 for that they will be seen as one hdd but more fast. In which case do you think premiere will works more fastly and efficiently ?
I apologize for the length of my question, and thanks again I you had the courage to read it all. And also sorry for my bad english, i'm only a little frenchy :-).

  • X58 Pro and Raid 0, I would like some help if possible.

    Hi,
I'm currently waiting on my SSD's that I want to use in a raid 0 configuration, but I'm a complete newbie when it comes to running raid on these things.
Currently I have HDD's and DVD on SATA contact 1, 2 and 3.
    My BIOS version is 7.3.
I'm planning on installing Windows 7 64-bit on the Raid 0 configuration.
Can someone give me a step by step instruction on how to setup a Raid 0 with 2x SSD?

    Registry tweak for what?
Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"
This >> registry tweak << is required if you install Windows without setting the RAID mode to ACHI first as follows:
This issue occurs if the disk driver (MSACHI) in Windows 7 and Windows Vista is disabled. This driver must be enabled before you change the SATA/RAID mode of the boot drive. To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
    Start REGEDIT.
Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
    Reboot and load the BIOS.
Change the RAID value to ACHI.
    Finally, reboot.

I got a reply from MSI support to use RAID option in BIOS and Windows 7 installed without any problems.
Sorry I went off on a tangent, I failed to remember that you are installing this for RAID, if you were using the SSD's in non-RAID mode, you'd use ACHI.

  • P67A-GD65 New Bios and RAID issues

    Hello all,
Last week I decided to reinstall my whole OS from scratch. Before doing so I updated the BIOS to the latest 4.3 version - I was experiencing some issues which may have been HW related and I thought I wanted to try the latest BIOS.
I now have a weird problem. When I shutdown the PC I can heard my RAID HDDs being turned off one by one, but before the last one is being shut down the PC reboots. Then the RAID BIOS screen takes ages to appear and I can hear my HDDs being turned on one by one - slowly.
If I then shutdown the system again, all is good.
The other day the RAID BIOS was showing one of the RAID HDDs being NOT part of the RAID - hence it marked the array as Degraded. The array rebuilt correctly and it's not ok.
I know that my HDDs are possibly not perfect - but if analysed they do not show any obvious issue - but I was not having this problem before.
Any suggestions? It would be also nice to know WHICH HDD failed, and maybe I could try replacing it! Is there a log somewhere that tells me what's happening?
    Thanks

  • Made HDD, Battery and case upgrades to my ipod video 5th Gen and now I am told "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."

I have a 5th Gen iPod Video that I have had many years now.  It has worked faithfully until about 2 weeks ago and the HDD totally died on me.
So I decided to upgrade from a 30 to 60 gb HDD, replaced the battery for the appropriate HDD and bought a new back shell for the unit.  I made incremental installations as parts arrived.  First the HDD itself and the next day the battery.  Both went in with no problem and I have been running them in a jerry rigged case (basically the 30gb back case has been taped together to make sure it was going to work OK.  I have been taking it to work with absolutely no issues, great response and great battery life.  Synching is fabulous.
Here is the issue, I hope this makes sense...
Today I received my 60 GB silver back cover and moved all of my parts over.  It seems to fit fine.  Headphone jack is working fine.  However, now the hold button is unresponsive (which is not a big loss to me but still just so you know).  I can play music and I can sync.  However, if I restart the unit, or I try synching a second time, I get screen saying "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."  It does not matter if I snap it shut or leave the case loose, this happens.
I have this error until I open my case up again and do nothing else.  At that time, the error goes away, and my ipod is fine again.  Then, the screen comes back after restarting to a normal boot.  But, if I sync or restart without doing anything else, we go through the motions again until I open the case back up.
I have disconnected the battery as well as the HDD, but still have the problem.  I have also disconnected the cable coming from the hold button/earphone jack to the M/B,
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue or have any suggestions.

Shouldn't you contact the vendor or person who sold the back cover?  At the very least, it has a Hold switch that doesn't work.
This web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
and they call it "Headphone Jack & Hold Switch"
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+5th+Generation+%28Video%29+Headphone+Jack+%26+H old+Switch+Replacement/604
Under Relevant Parts, they seem to list separate parts for the thick and thin back cover.
On a side note, another way to fix your iPod is to use a compact flash card instead of a hard drive.  This web page has details
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-your-5th-Gen-iPod-Video-to-use-Flash-Mem or/
Then, you can use your existing thin profile back cover that works.  I replaced the hard drive in my 4th gen iPod with a CF card.  Currently, it is only 8GB, but with lower prices these days, I may soon upgrade it with a 64GB CF card.  But it works great with the 8GB card.  The iPod is noticeably lighter.  There is no hard drive spin-up delay.  The battery lasts longer per charge.  And it is no doubt more shock-resistant.

  • What are the meanings of Apple Hardware Test error codes 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1300 and 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1308?

what are the meanings of Apple Hardware Test error codes 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1300 and 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1308?

Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.)  We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient.  While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top.  Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that.

  • Does Time Machine only work with external HDD's and Networks?

I have a Mac Mini that I just replaced the optical drive with a hard drive. This second HDD is formated into two partitions, with one of them being for my Time Machine backups, the other a media scratch drive.
When I try to choose this volume in setting up Time Machine, I get an error message that says, +"Are you sure you want to back up to the same disk your original data is on?"+ The message goes on to explain that +"the volume you have chosen for storing backups is on the same disk as the volume containing your data... you should back up to a volume on a different disk."+
The volume that I have selected IS on a different disk than my start-up system drive and the data to be backed up IS NOT on the same disk as the disk storing the backups. System Profiler defines my startup HDD as "BSD Name: disk0" and my second HDD as "disk1," with the two partitions "disk1s2" and "disk1s3." Mount Point for the start-up HDD is "/" and the two partitions on the second HDD are "/Volumes/Scratch Disk" and /Volumes/Time Machine." These two volumes show up as options when I "Choose Backup Disk" in Time Machine, but not the Mini's startup HDD.
Does Time Machine allow the use of second internal HDD? I have an external HDD, but it has a clone of my start-up drive on it. Thanks for any help.

Chris, excluding the other volume could certainly be the issue since the two options that I'm given for a backup volume are both on the same hard disk. The start-up system HDD is not listed. Maybe the message is referring to this, rather than to the start-up disk.
Not until after I selected "use this volume anyway," did I get to the "Option" screen to exclude items from the backup. When I selected "+" I was surprised to find the other volume, Scratch Disk, listed along with the start-up HDD as being included in the backup routine. So I selected Scratch Disk as one of the items to exclude.
As V.K. mentions, the cautionary message is rather vague as to what exactly it is referring to. Thanks.
