S205 Shared Memory Settings

Hello,
I have lenovo S205 with 3GB RAM
Now size of shared memory is 384MB
How can I change it to 512MB?
I did not find any options in BIOS
Thank you

Hi,
even the one year old Thinkpad X100e could be upgraded to 8 GB ..
the Thinkpad X120e use the same  based on cpu/apu platform  ... could be upgraded to 8 GB. &  X120e  use 384MB shared video...
so the equivalent Ideapad S205 uses also 384MB shared video ...
and upgrade to max. 8 GB is no problem , with 2 x 4 GB  mem sticks  ..
sincerely KalvinKlein

  • Shared Memory Settings for Oracle - Machine Spec Specific?

    Hi,
I've been asked to apply some shared memory settings for Oracle on a new V210. The DBA has asked that we simply copy the settings from one system file to the new machine.
My problem is that I'm not entirely sure whether this is the best course of action. The machine the settings are taken from is a E280R with 2GB Memory and 2 x 900Mhz processors. The new V210 has 2GB and 2 x 1.33Ghz.
Surely the memory settings should be different? Don't worry, I've copied the relevant settings - not the whole system file!
    Thanks for any advice,
    John

    Hi John,
Normally, When you want to apply the shm. We normally for production machines , consider 1/3rd of your physical memory. For eg. If you have 16gb of physical memory, I would consider around 4gb of shm_max.
    Thanks,

  • Shared memory settings from 32 to 64 bit Oracle

    Hello,
Questions about Oracle and Shared Memory from 32bit to 64bit Oracle
I have a Sun Sparc V880 server running Solaris 9 with 8xCPUs and 16gb of Ram. It is currently running 6 Oracle (32 bit) 9.2 databases which we are planning to upgrade to 10.2. My question regards the setting of the Solaris 9 kernel parameters speciifically 'shminfo_shmmax'. This is currently set to - 'shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295'which I believe is the maximum amount of shared memory which can be allocated to a 32bit version of Oracle and the one recommended by Oracle.
Running 'show sga' on all of the current 9.2 databases returns
    Total System Global Area
    DB     SGA(bytes)
    db1     772528008
    db2     789305244
    db3     772528008
    db4     114021228
    db5     791238556
    db6     789305244
    Total = 4045703524 bytes or 3.76786 gb.
    1. Does this mean that each Oracle 32bit database can only use up to a maximum of about 4gb of shared memory or that all 6 together can only use up to 4gb ? resulting in 12gb being available for other (non Oracle) processes.
    2. I have noticed (through 'sar' stats) that the server occasionally pages (non zero values for pgscan/s and pgfree/s etc.). Since the server mostly only runs the Oracle databases, is this because Oracle can only use circa 4gb of Ram before it starts paging ?
    3. If both 9.2 and 10.2 Oracle databases are run on the server would increasing the value of shminfo_shmmax then allow the 10.2 databases to use more of the 16gb of Ram, while still limiting the 32bit databases to the 4gb limit ?
Any help here would be appreciated

Pl see if MOS Doc 467960.1 (How Important It Is To Set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax Above 4 GB) and the notes it references can help

  • Oracle Error 'ORA-27102: out of memory' - Shared memory parameters correct.

    Advice please!
We’ve recently shut down our Oracle test server in order to increase file system capacity.  When we rebooted some of the databases wouldn’t start up.  It started the first 4 instances and then errored out saying “ORA-27102: out of memory“.
I’m pretty sure it’s nothing to do with the file system because we actually reverted back to the old file system and the databases still wouldn’t start.  I think it’s more likely that something’s gone awry whilst the databases were actually running, and the problem has only manifested itself once we stopped and restarted them.
I have researched the error and forud this artical and similar:  http://var-adm.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/adjust-solaris-10-shared-memory-to.html
Everything suggests that Oracle is trying to create a larger shared memory segment than is allowed.  The thing is, we’ve never changed our shared memory settings, and one minute it was working, the next it isn’t.  To confirm this I checked the shared memory, which is as follows:
    sswift4# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory $$
    process: 926: bash
NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION                       RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
            privileged      7.64GB      -   deny                                 -
            system          16.0EB    max   deny                                 -
As suggested in the above article, I checked the alert log and found the ‘WARNING: EINVAL’ message which is as follows:
WARNING: EINVAL creating segment of size 0x000000005e002000
Converting this to decimal, it’s trying to create something of 1.5 GB, well within the shared memory settings, which suggests that this isn’t the problem.
We are running Oracle 10g and 11g on Solaris 10 Sparc. The error does not seem to be instance specific, we have 8 instances on this box all with SGA max of 2000m. The server has 32GB of memory available.
    Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    Debs

Thanks for your quick responses - we have now resolved the issue.
The shared memory value was set on the command line but not saved.
Therefore once we rebooted it lost the configuration. this has been altered by our UNIX admin and all DBs have started without issue.
    Thanks
    Debs

  • Disp+work stop because of shared memory?

Hello Gurus, I have an SAP server that will not start. It was running previously, but after a parameter update and an instance restart, I cannot get the dispatcher running.
System is Windows 2012 Server, MSSQL 2008 R2, 16 Core 132 GB RAM.
I believe it is related to shared memory overlapping somehow, but  I am not sure how to resolve or investigate. I have had issues previously with memory overlap halting SAP servers with Diagnostics Agents, but this server is not currently running any DAA. It is running SAPRouter and some SAP Web Dispatcher instances.
I will include my trace files below:

Hi Alwina, here is the DEV_ICM trace:
From this trace, it appears that it is listening to 65000?
Netstat shows that the system is listening to 127.0.0.1:65000 .
Other SAP ports show listening on 0:0:0:0:xxxx , is ICM listening on 127 a problem?

    Hi Wim
You should say that "It may be Control File problem", but you shouldn't say that "it's due to Control File" problem
Please refer to Errors Documentation for more information on ORA-00600
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14219/e0.htm#sthref371
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [string], [string], [string], [string], [string], [string], [string], [string]
Cause: This is the generic internal error number for Oracle program exceptions. This indicates that a process has encountered an exceptional condition.
Action: Report as a bug - the first argument is the internal error number

Try starting Oracle database from SQL plus using orasid as user and then start SAP
Refer to Note 491174 and perform all the tests as mentioned
You will be able to solve it
Let me know if it helps

  • Solaris 10, Oracle 10g, and Shared Memory

    Hello everyone,
We've been working on migrating to Solaris 10 on all of our database servers (I'm a UNIX admin, not a DBA, so please be gentle) and we've encountered an odd issue.
    Server A:
    Sun V890
    (8) 1.5Ghz CPUs
    32GB of RAM
Server A was installed with Solaris 10 and the Oracle data and application files were moved from the old server (the storage hardware was moved between servers). Everything is running perfectly, and we're using the resource manager to control the memory settings (not /etc/system)
The DBAs then increase the SGA of one of the DBs on the system from 1.5GB to 5GB and it fails to start (ORA-27102). According to the information I have, the maximum shared memory on this system should be 1/4 of RAM (8 GB, actually works out to 7.84 GB according to prctl). I verified the other shared memory/semaphore settings are where they should be, but the DB would not start with a 5 GB SGA. I then decided to just throw a larger max shared memory segment at it, so I used the projmod to increase project.max-shm-memory to 16GB for the project Oracle runs under. The DB now starts just fine. I cut it back down to 10GB for project.max-shm-memory and the DB starts ok. I ran out of downtime window, so I couldn't continue refining the settings.
Running 'ipcs -b' and totalling up the individual segments showed we were using around 5GB on the test DB (assuming my addition is correct).
    So, the question:
Is there a way to correlate the SGA of the DB(s) into what I need the project.max-shm-memory to? I would think 7.84GB would be enough to handle a DB with 5GB SGA, but it doesn't appear to be. We have some 'important' servers getting upgraded soon and I'd like to be able to refine these numbers / settings before I get to them.
    Thanks for your time,
    Steven

To me, setting a massive shared memory segment just seems to be inefficient. I understand that Oracle is only going to take up as much memory (in general) as the SGA. And I've been searching for any record of really large shared memory segments causing issues but haven't found much (I'm going to contact Sun to get their comments).
The issue I am having is that it doesn't make sense that the DB with a 5GB SGA is unable to startup when there is an 8GB max shared memory segment, but a 10GB (and above) seems to work. Does it really need double the size of the SGA when starting up, but 'ipcs' shows it's only using the SGA amount of shared memory? I have plans to cut it down to 4GB and test again, as that is Oracle's recommendation. I also plan to run the DB startup through truss to get a better handle on what it's trying to do. And, if it comes down to it, I'll just set a really big max shared memory segment, I just don't want it to come back and cause an issue down the road.
The current guidance on Metalink still seems to be suggesting a 4GB shared memory segment (I did not get a chance to test this yet with the DB we're having issues with).
I can't comment on how the DBA specifically increased the SGA as I don't know what method they use.

  • Shared Memory Short Dump: SHMM ab_ShmResetLocks - anyone?

    hello:)
I have a problem with shared memory area (SHMM) that dumps.
I have a tool that uses a shared memory area instance to store data.
When I run the tool and update the data stored in the instance, a short dump is thrown:
    SYSTEM_SHM_AREA_OBSOLETE with the explanation:
An attempt was made to access a shared memory area that has already been
      released. Possible reasons for release:
    - explicit release from an ABAP program or from the shared objects
       management transaction
    - implicit release during resource shortages
The first one does not match, as I DO NOT explicitly release the instance of my area.
Moreover, ST22 shows me different parts of code every time, so my code is not the cause, or a specific part of code, or data that I shift.
The second one would probably be the cause.
But how can I avoid it?
Moreover, there in SM21(System Log) there is at this time, there is a runtime error, that says
    ab_ShmResetLocks and nothing more:(
    Shared Memory size is sufficient.
The Shared Memory Area Settings (SHMA) do not time out the read/write access(Lifetime: no entry and Automatic area structuring is set)
Any help is more than welcome, why i get the short dump!!
    best regards
    simon:)

  • Linux memory settings

We installed the suite on a linux server in a managed configuration (AdminServer, soa_server1, bam_server1).
At first we didnot change the memory settings so all three process ran with memory settings:
    -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m
With these settings the suite ran OK at first but gradually the performance detoriated.
Using jconsole I looked at the memory consumption of the processes and the soa_server1 was using up all memory while the AdminServer and bam_server1 had plenty of memory.
I changed the memory setting specific to the servers:
    AdminServer, bam_server1
    -Xms768m -Xmx768m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m
    soa_server1
    -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m
The process have been running stable upto now.
    The server:
OS: oracle enterprise server release 4 update 7
    Cpu: 4*E7340 @ 2.4 Ghz
    Ram: 8 Gb
Any other experiences with memory settings on linux and/or using a single server setup vs the shared configuration?

    About rebuilding kernel
    on linux 7.0 :
    1. Try to look at file /usr/src/linux/include/asm/shmparam.h
Update parameters SHMMAX, SHMMIN, SHMMNI, SHMSEG.
SHMMAX is set to 50% of RAM
    SHMMIN 1
    SHMMNI 100
    SHMSEG 10
    2. edit file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/sem.h
    and set param
    SEMMSL 250
    SEMOPM 100
    SEMVMX 32767
    3. After then you must configure kernel, and set modules
    and drivers when you need.
    >cd /usr/src/linux
    >make xconfig
    4. Save configure.
    5. >cd /usr/src/linux
    >make clean
    >make dep
    >make bzImage
    6. Command make bzImage create new kernel in directory
    /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot
    there is file bzImage
    7. copy new kernel to /boot directory
    8. you must edit /etc/lilo.cfg and add new record for
    new kernel.
    9. write lilo to disk
    >cd /etc
    > lilo -c
    10. Be shure that you can boot old kernel !!!!!
    11. restart.
    12. After correct reboot new kernel you can see to the
    /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
there is parameter about max shared memory.
    on Linux 7.1
is different file path and name for edit.

  • Satellite Pro L850 - i5 3210M shared memory allocation

    Hi,
I'm a proud new owner of this excellent laptop and I've added extra RAM to take it to 8GB.
All the spec sheets on retailer websites state that the gpu can be assigned up to 1.7GB of shared memory.
Previous experience of other computers is that this memory amount is altered in the BIOS settings but I do not see any option in latest BIOS 1.60.
Obviously theres' plenty of RAM to give to the GPU but I can't see how to assign it. Do the i5 chips allocate dynamically once Windows is running or is the BIOS missing this setting?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Hi
The shared memory is controlled by graphic card driver and this cannot be controlled manually if an running applications needs some shared memory, the driver would assign this value automatically.

have a DB_HANDLE initialization parameter. The
problem is that the initialization parameters are
    located in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfileXE.ora, but sqlplus
is looking for initORCL.ora.You mean instance is looking for initORCL.ora and not for SPFILE, or ;-)
So does anyone besides Faust knowSorry, again me ;-)
    how to configure
sqlplus to look for spfileXE.ora instead of
    initORCL.ora? I can't find an SQL*Plus setting that
will do this. How to set SPFILE and arond it you can find here:

  • 836: Cannot create data store shared-memory segment, error 22

    Hi,
I am hoping that there is an active TimesTen user community out there who could help with this, or the TimesTen support team who hopefully monitor this forum.
I am currently evaluating TimesTen for a global investment organisation. We currently have a large Datawarehouse, where we utilise summary views and query rewrite, but have isolated some data that we would like to store in memory, and then be able to
report on it through a J2EE website.
We are evaluating TimesTen versus developing our own custom cache. Obviously, we would like to go with a packaged solution but we need to ensure that there are no limits in relation to maximum size. Looking through the documentation, it appears that the
only limit on a 64bit system is the actual physical memory on the box. Sounds good, but we want to prove it since we would like to see how the application scales when we store about 30gb (the limit on our UAT environment is 32gb). The ultimate goal is to
see if we can store about 50-60gb in memory.
Is this correct? Or are there any caveats in relation to this?
We have been able to get our Data Store store 8gb of data, but want to increase this. I am assuming that the following error message is due to us not changing the /etc/system on the box:
836: Cannot create data store shared-memory segment, error 22
703: Subdaemon connect to data store failed with error TT836
Can somebody from the User community, or an Oracle Times Ten support person recommend what should be changed above to fully utilise the 32gb of memory, and the 12 processors on the box.
Its quite a big deal for us to bounce the UAT unix box, so l want to be sure that l have factored in all changes that would ensure the following:
    * Existing Oracle Database instances are not adversely impacted
    * We are able to create a Data Store which is able fully utilise the physical memory on the box
    * We don't need to change these settings for quite some time, and still be able to complete our evaluation
We are currently in discussion with our in-house Oracle team, but need to complete this process before contacting Oracle directly, but help with the above request would help speed this process up.
The current /etc/system settings are below, and l have put in the current machines settings as comments at the end of each line.
Can you please provide the recommended settings to fully utilise the existing 32gb on the box?

    Hi,
I work for Oracle in the UK and I manage the TimesTen pre-sales support team for EMEA.
Your main problem here is that the value for shmsys:shminfo_shmmax in /etc/system is currently set to 8 Gb therby limiting the maximum size of a single shared memory segment (and hence Timesten datastore) to 8 Gb. You need to increase this to a suitable value (maybe 32 Gb in your case). While you are doing that it would be advisable to increase ny of the other kernel parameters that are currently lower than recommended up to the recommended values. There is no harm in increasing them other possibly than a tiny increase in kernel resources, but with 32 GB of RAM I don't think you need be concerned about that...
You should also be sure that the system has enough swap space configured to supprt a shared memory segment of this size. I would recommend that you have at least 48 GB of swap configured.
TimesTen should detect that you have a multi-CPU machine and adjust its behaviour accordingly but if you want to be absolutely sure you can set SMPOptLevel=1 in the ODBC settings for the datastore.
If you want more direct assistance with your evaluation going forward then please let me know and I will contact you directly. Of course, you are free to continue using this forum if you would prefer.

  • XP Pro shared memory size of Intel GM45 on L305-S5905

The laptop's Vista Home Premium was recently replaced with XP SP3.
All is well, with one smaller (1GB) issue.
I am fairly certain (not 100%) i had changed the shared memory in Vista to 128MB (i only do basic 2D desktop stuff, nothing that would need more memory), however in XP all i can see is in Video settings is on Adapter tab it shows 1024MB for the graphics card, which would explain why the XP booting with Physical Address Extension only shows 2.87GB free out of the 4GB total.
Does anyone know where intel is hiding the ability to change the shared memory size, i don't seem to get nowhere with googling around for it. I would certainly rather have the memory available for applications than waste it on doing nothing.
I am looking at the intel driver since there is no option to set memory size in BIOS either.
Thanks in advance for your help,
