S230u Twist - Exchange Harddisk

Hi,
Some months ago I bought a Samsung SSD for my old computer. Unfortunately it stopped working one or two weeks later.
Now I have a fresh Lenovo S230u Twist! I would like to put my SSD into it but I do not know how to do this.
Do you know where to find an instruction to do so? Which screws to open etc.?
Many thanks
Ruben

Hey there RubenIO and welcome to the Forums!
This place for this type of information is to review the hardware maintenance manual for installation procedures. (Page 58 for HDD/SSD) Additionally, there is a support site called frusonfone.com/fof that has videos showing various procedures on a variety of Lenovo products including the Twist! I hope this helps RubenIO!

  • S230U Twist - Camera no longer works after Win 8.1

    Hello all!
I've scoured the forums and tried EVERYTHING but I still cannot find a solution to my problem:
After I upgrade from Win 8 to Win8.1, my camera no longer works. It shows a gray screen with a camera and a diagonal line across it but the green camera light shows up; I also get a shutter sound when take a picture but the image is only of  the aforementioned gray camera screen. I can't use the camera for video in skype or any other video chat function.
My Integrated Camera driver version is 3.4.7.26 (SunplusIT) dated 3/15/2013. I tried to upgrade but it seems to be the latest one.
I've also checked that the Lock Screen setting is set to ON for "Swipe down on lock screen to use camera".
    SOMEONE, please HELP!

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I'm really sorry to hear that when you try to use webcam in your Lenovo S230U Twist, you are getting a crossed camera image.
Check if your camera is in normal or private mode. This could be happening because you might have set your camera in private mode.
Go into Lenovo Settings App and select camera.
There will be the options of Private and Normal.
    Select Normal.
Also, in Settings > Permissions, make sure that Skype and other similar apps have permission to access the Webcam or Microphone.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Trackpad alternatives in other brands? s230u Twist Yoga

I had been excited about my planned purchase of Lenovo's Thinkpad s230u Twist until today.  I have purchased Thinkpad laptops for the last 7 years, I LOVE THEM!  I purchased an Ideapad G510S for my daughter's birthday from the Outlet store in July 2014 and received it with a non-working touchscreen, not a big problem. After troubleshooting it with techsupport it was determined to be a hardware issue.  My daughter didn't request a touchscreen in the first place so we decided to forego the hassle of setting up a return, waiting, then setting up another computer.
When contacting Customer Service (?) they wouldn't even reimburse the price difference for the identical machine sans touchscreen feature which only came to around $30.  On top of that, I'm also a Working Advantage member.  This has unfortunately left me with a bad taste in my mouth.  The poor service today will make me rethink my decision; my R61 has been an amazing machine and will have to hold out a little longer while I find comparables.
Does anyone have suggestions on a comprable convertible to the s230u i5?  How about the Yoga also with i5, which was to be the next purchase in the next few weeks for my older daughter?
I would miss most of all the trackpad "Nurple" as it was affectionately named in my home.

  • MSATA or 2.5" SSD for Lenovo Thinkpad s230u Twist?

The Subject sort of explains itself, however I will add some more infromation for convenience sake:
Generally speaking I think of myself as fairly knowlageble about computers and their hardware. When it comes to laptops however I'm not so knowlagable, thus I would like to get a professional oppinion on the subject of SSD for laptops.
So I'm thinking of getting a Crucial m500 SSD (I'm so happy with my older m4 that I have full confidence in it's stability and speed) with 240GB of storage space, it comes in both mSATA and in the regular 2.5" x 7mm format. Thus I ask wheter or not to choose 2.5" or mSATA for my Thinkpad s230u Twist. It already has a 500Gb  Hitachi harddrive provided originaly by Lenovo, thus if I choose the mSATA I would be able to have a total of 740Gb of fast and reliable storage.
What are your oppinions on such an installation? should I just go for mSATA or choose the regular 2.5" format?
    Rainmaker91
P.S: I should probably just inform that Lenovos solutions is not an option due to it's extreme price and the drives beeing outdated. Also I don't need the Lenovo warranty and support due to the "Warranty" provided by law in my country.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have replaced my 500GB HD with a 2.5" Samsung 830 series, 128 GB SSD. After researching the benefits of both the "Main Drive" socket and the mSATA socket, I learned that in virtually ALL Laptops, the mSATA socket is limited to only mSATA II speeds, ie. 3 GB/sec, while the Main Drive socket can handle the 6 GB/sec characteristic of the SATA III properties. This higher speed is, after all, why one would go to the trouble of replacing the Drive to begin with. I did also put a 120 GB mSATA SSD in my WWAN socket (I have an Edge 530), where I store most of my new programs for easy, fast retrieval...So, I would definitely go with the 2.5" SSD.....fruhlpmd.....

  • Thinkpad edge s230u twist can't access bios by F1,bios recovery

When I tried to update win8.1 updates KB3000850, it failed via auto-update or installation. Follow the Microsoft guide to restart laptop into safe mode, installation failed also. Then I chose safe mode with minimum way to restart laptop. Then laptop halted down at Lenovo logo.
At first, I thought bios is modified by windows8.1(x64) and it can't load any hard disk to boot. With a couple of days test, I found a way to flash BIOS at very beginning of laptop boot. BIOS can be updated. But there is still no startup option to set boot sequence. My laptop is still halted down at Lenovo logo, same as BIOS update. I can only access bios by keeping real clock error which I generated by clearing BIOS.
if no real clock error, i can't access bios. And f1 and f12 doesn't work. At the lonovo logo screen, Enter doesn't work also although it hints me to press Enter.
In my laptop bios, there is no startup option even I udate it.
can somebody help me on this? Lenovo service center just aksed me to change board.
Here I share the bios crisis recovery solution for s230u, may also for other models.
Laptop: ThinkPad edge s230u twist 3347-3QC
    Bios: 1.67, UEFI.
    OS:windows 8.1 x64
How to do BIOS crisi recovery:
    1. Download bios(exe version) from Lenovo website
    2. Run it, and release file. Uncheck the installation at last. Remember the release location. You can get the bios in .fl1 format, mine is in ..\gduj21us\GDETA9WW\
    3. Rename it as BIOS.cap and copy it into a new formatted USB stick with FAT32 in root directory.
    4. Shutdown Laptop and disconnect AC cord. Insert USB stick.
    5. Hold Fn+R, plugging in AC power. And power-on.
    6. USB stick is blinking, then you can release key. A short while, after a lenovo logo, flashing screen shows.
    7. After flash, laptop will restart or shutdown.
In BIOS, it shows new version. If new bios is new one, flashing takes a longer time than a very short time for same version flashing.

I tried 1.02, it will try to read USB stick, then shutdown, restart, read again, laptop would be in this cycle. It's same when i changed one Bit by hex-editor of 1.69 version. I also try to use PhoenixTool 2.59 to rebuild BIOS after change one or two Bits of extracted roms. same status also, it took the changed bios as wrong input, enter the above cycle also.
I tried 1.53, it can show lenovo logo, and flashing screen, but it hints that BIOS should be qual or newer.
I still wait for some on guide. Thanks in advance.

  • Supported Dual Band Wifi Card for s230u Twist?

I just bought the s230u Twist and realized that the Intel 2230 wifi card is *not* dual band (2.4 GHz only).  I also realize that the BIOS has a whitelist for mini-pci cards and need to know if there are any dual band cards that are supported.  Thanks.

    Hey there guys,
Jccheng, the ThinkPad a/b/g/n Wireless & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 ABGN & BT 4.0) is a dual band adapter that is compatible and comes as upgrade with the ThinkPad Twist s230u. The 802.11a only runs on a 5Ghz Frequency, and the 802.11n can run on either. I have listed all the adapter options with part numbers below:
    04W3763 Cybertan BCM43228+BCM20702 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 Combo (ThinkPad a/b/g/n)
    04W3764 Liteon BCM43228+BCM20702 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 Combo (ThinkPad a/b/g/n)
    04W3765 Intel 2x2 11bgn + BT4.0 Combo Jackson Peak1 (Centrino 2230)
As an option, you can call the Lenovo Contact Center, 1-800-426-7378, for a Parts Only order. Hope this helps!

  • Can anyone please tell some alternative hard drive for S230u Twist?

    Dear Team
I am struggling to get the hard drive 04W4088 which is for the thinkpad twist S230u here in India.  Can any one please help me to  find an alternative hard drive for the same ?  Can I go for any SSD drive?   Currently the laptop is with the service desk, but they said no stock available for the twist hard drive.   So, if I can give a new suitable hard drive they can fix it and give it to me back.   Also, theey said it is not posible to fit the SSD for the twist S230U.  I am really suffering because of the poor customer service and my laptop is with them for past one month.  can anyone help me in getting a new suitable hard drive for the Think pad twist S230u?
    Thanks

Have you tried reinstalling the original drive? Same symptoms with it?

  • S230U Twist Wifi Adapter WiDi Compatible?

My web searches say that "some" Twist are WiDi compatible.  I'm trying to find out which wireless adapter is in my ThinkPad Twist S230U type 3347-4HU so I can determine if it meets the Intel hardware requirement for WiDi.  All I can find in the device manager is it's a "2x2 11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter".  I need to know which Broadcom adapter was used.  Anyone know which adapter was used or where to look on the laptop?

    Hi All,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I checked with minimum requirements to work Widi on Intel support site. Below is the link of hardware requirements.
    http://supportkb.intel.com/wireless/wireless-display/templates/selfservice/intelwidi/#portal/1026/ar...
Comparing to that there are 3 cards available for ThinkPad Twist S230u which is supported, below are the parts along with the part number.
    04W3834 - Cybertan BCM4328+BCM20702 2*2 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 HMC Combo (primary)
    04W3835 - Liteon BCM4328+BCM20702 2*2 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 HMC Combo (secondary)

  • Since s230u Twist Bios rev. 1.57 Keyboard is Dead

Hello, Since the Bios Update 1.57 come out,
The Twist have massive Problems in near every Linux Distribution
Actually with rev 1.63 and the Versions before, you can reproduce this Bug by trying some Live Systems like Ubuntu or Fedora.
or try to install Ubuntu in EFI.
EFI Installation works but after a Reboot no Keyboard, Trackpoint or Touchpad working.
    Touchscreen works.
After an Odysee with an Auto Rotation Bug, or Intel Rapid Start  Bug, or Battery Problems this is the next Thing.
Nearly every 4 weeks a new Bios came out and brings more Bugs than fixes.
I Need Linux to Work with it, because a few special Programms for Ingeneering i use, work only with this OS.
Is this Bug established to Lenovo Tech support? and are they working on a Solution?
I have to tell that i´m not alone with this
    -------->>>>>Ubuntu Bug
Input to know whats going on would be nice

    Hello,
Every Lenovo ThinkPad S230u I have seen (my own, plus a handful in office supply stores around the US) has come with Windows 8 pre-installed and worked fine with that; I am not aware of any distribution of Linux that is officially supported on the unit, although that may vary from country to country.
You might want to try running Linux in a VM under Windows and see if that works, or perhaps trying a non-EFI installation of Linux, if possible.
Since this forum is primarily for user-to-user support, you will want to contact Lenovo support directly in your country to open a ticket with them if you would like the issue investigated.

  • Dropped my S230u twist and trying to fix it

Hi A few months back my thinkpad s230 u twist machine fell off a cushion (couple of feet off) and then when tried to use it, it would boot up but then freeze. Now when I try and boot it tries to go to auto repair, then get a blue screen saying Your PC needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000185 Youll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you dont have media like disco or usb, contact your sys admin or pc manufacturer Options then are Enter to try again, F8 for startup settings , and Esc for UEFI Firmware settings I can find a win 7 recovery file on lenovo but not win 8, not sure if I should try and use the win 7 file and how I do so, or if I should do something else. I believe it has a SSD drive and a hard drive, and is windows 8 pro (touch machine and sticker on machine says windows 8 pro) Suggestions/advice welcome Thanks S

    Hello and welcome,
SInce this started with a fall, it migh be worth opening things up and re-seating the cache SSD and the hard drive.
It isn't difficult on these machines.  The Hardware Maintenance Manual will help.
It may not be the fix but IMHO it's worth a shot.

  • Thinkpad Twist S230u: Clean Install - Windows 8 on Custom Partition

I want to install Windows 8 using my own partition configuration, meaning where I'd get a C and a D drive. On my other computers, this is what I have and I really like this configuration. I want to install Windows 8 on the C drive and have all my data on D. I have reformatted and partitioned the HDD to C and D. When I slot in Windows 8 Enterprise to install, I keep getting this message "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one." What the machine keeps wanting is for me to delete both partitions and create its own partitions and I don't want this. I know it wants this because I have clicked delete of the partitions and looked to see what it would do. It ended up creating several of its own partitions (not at all how I want it). When I re-partitioned the drive back to C and D (2 partition config), it would repeat that same error message.
Can someone please help tell me how do I install Windows 8 doing my own custom partition (C, D) where Win 8 is installed onto my choice of C and D is left for my data. Why does it keep saying, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one"? Is it a settings in BIOS that I need to change to enable me to use my own partition? If so, what setting? I have never had these issues installing Win 8 using the C & D partition config on 3 other computers (not Lenovo S230u Twist).
    Thanks for your help!!! :-)

    Hello LightspeedX!
I glad you wrote this issue cause i still having the same problem (and questions).
I decided to put everithing down on my s230u because it is quietly irritant see a last generation porcessor like the I7 on a top plataform ultrabook running so slowly like our thinkpad do.
Since the embed software and the poor resource planning is the resposable for that issue, i really cant imagine why Lenovo decide to bring all this things up together at this device. I realize that any cheap I3 china device is more confortable and "quickly" to run any software than this machine in his original state (factory defaults), so i decid to try a brand new and clean installation of windows 8 or (perhaps) a dual boot configuration using a linux frindly distro like ubuntu.
At my own risc, like the cusummer service like to say, i will erase all HD and start this "saga" (making a full hard copy first, of course and will soon bring any results i found here.

  • S230u wrong driver picked up in SU / thininstaller

I have a s230u and when I run system update it is picking up the wrong wless driver software. this is the one picked up by SU / and thininstaller :
If you check this thread - this is the one i'm told is the correct driver?
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/S230u-Twist-Windows-7-Intel-wless-driver/m-p/1323...
Any way this can be corrrected ?
    Thanks

susytem Update and Thininstaller are telling me this software is for this machine - when I try to install it it says its not compatible! - I agreee all drivers look to be installed. If so, what is this software, why is it telling me this machine is missing it if I cant install it ?

  • Twist WWAN Upgrade - add GPS capability??

I've confirmed with technical support that the S230u twist can include a WWAN.
(Available-- But I can not find this WWAN option while configuring/ordering your unit build.)
I've tracked down the part number from tech support... 04W3786.
I've read the forum thread on upgrading the WWAN on Thinkpad,  but support told me I would have to send my unit to Lenovo for the upgrade.
Is this a user serviceable part?
Will this WWAN upgrade my Twist unit to include GPS capabilities,  as referenced on this page?
    http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/
Thanks for any information..    Support transfers me to "Sales"   and then sales transfers me back to "Tech support" and I'm already feeling frustration over a fairly simple question.

    Hi, westmichigan
According to this page for the Twist, the WWAN card can be replaced by a user. As for this adding GPS capabilities, I think that this would help and make it GPS-capable, but I cannot say for sure. The card can be replaced by as user, however, using the steps here in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (pg. 63)
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • S230u won't upgrade to 8.1

Lots of info here about upgrading to 8.1 and I've read many of them.  My S230u Twist won't complete the process despite making sure that all updates, drives, etc are up to date.  Is there a process / troubleshooting apprach that should be usd to try and discover what the issue is?  When trying to download, I get a message that "There was a problem installing the update" in a banner that splashes across the Windows 8 Store screen that offers the update.
Thoughts, advice and direction are all appreciated.

There is troubleshooter which you can use and check if something is wrong with the update mechanism.
