S2S VPN - ASA 5505 to ASA 5540 - Routing Problems
I'm a software developer (no doubt the issue) trying to setup my remote office (5505) to the main office (5540). No problem getting the S2S VPN up, but I definitely have problems with the routing. Using tracert, it shows it going into the remote network for a couple of hops, but then timing out. Packet tracer shows everything is fine. Using my client VPN credentials to the remote network, same on the return path...does a few hops, then gets lost. I've stripped down the config to the basics and ensured it isn't security settings on both ends, but still doesn't work. I've spent A LOT of hours trying to get this to work, so thanks for any assistance!

just out of curiosity, why do you have
route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 99.X.X.7 1
You already set your default route through DHCP setroute under the interface. this could be the issue.
If your VPN config is ok and you are seeing encaps/decaps, it is likely a routing issue.
Does the remote device have the correct default gateway?
May be a Natting issue if you have a one-way tunnel (usually send but no receive)...

Site to Site VPN between ASA 5505 and Cisco 800 router
Evening all,
Hoping that someboy can see the error of my ways. It seems very like the problem that i read here: https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2016300
We have a cisco 800 in a remote site which we wanted to use for a site to site vpn. Went through the steps on the ASA 5505 and the 800 and have got to the stage were the tunnel is up and connected. Getting traffic through it is another matter. Remote network is 172.20.224.0/20 and the server network behind the ASA is 192.168.168.0/24. The tunnel does intiate when you send traffic from 172 ......to 192....... Both the ASA and 800 report the tunnel is up. If i look at the stats using ccp on the 800 i can see the encapsulation packets graph shooting up but nothing cominbg back. I did packet captures on the 5505 and could not see anything coming from the tunnel so i dont belive its making it to the ASA. Here is the config from the 800:

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device
and it provides the default username "cisco" for one-time use. If you have
already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image
supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired.
You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit
this session.
It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level
of 15 using the following command.
username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you
want to use.

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device.
This feature requires the one-time use of the username "cisco" with the
password "cisco". These default credentials have a privilege level of 15.
YOU MUST USE CISCO CP or the CISCO IOS CLI TO CHANGE THESE
PUBLICLY-KNOWN CREDENTIALS
Here are the Cisco IOS commands.
username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
no username cisco
Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you want
to use.
IF YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE PUBLICLY-KNOWN CREDENTIALS, YOU WILL
NOT BE ABLE TO LOG INTO THE DEVICE AGAIN AFTER YOU HAVE LOGGED OFF.
For more information about Cisco CP please follow the instructions in the

ASA 5505 Connected To Linksys Router
Hello, I have a cable modem internet connection and my cable modem is connected to an ASA 5505. The inside interface of the ASA has an IP address of 192.168.2.2 and is connected to a Linksys router's internet port which has an IP address of 192.168.2.1. The Linksys router then has a local area network of 192.168.1.0 and all my clients are on that network. Everything is working fine except in my ASA logs all the traffic shows up as the router's external address which is 192.168.2.1. I would like to see the 192.168.1.x address of the clients in the ASA firewall. I've tried making some changes to the Linksys router but that hasn't resolved it. Is there any changes I can make on the ASA to get this to work? Below is some of the config:
ASA Version 8.2(5)

I didn't post ACL's and some other things. Please let me know if you need more.
Thanks,

The Linksys doing NAT is the reason why the ASA sees all the traffic as having source address as 192.168.2.1. The only way for the ASA to see the original 192.168.1.x address is to change the Linksys to not do NAT.
One thing that I notice is that there is not a route statement in what you posted for the 192.168.1.0 network. It is not clear whether the route does exist and you did not post it or whether the route does not exist. But if it does not exist it would certainly be a reason why you lose Internet connectivity when you change the Linksys to not perform NAT. (the ASA would have no knowledge of how to forward to the network and would drop all the traffic). Try adding the route to the ASA and changing the Linksys to not perform NAT and let us know if it works.

10Mb Metro link between ASA 5505 and ASA 5510
Dear all,
I have encountered one difficult problem, I wished all expert could give my - newie some tips,
Environment
One ASA 5505 - ASA 7.2(1) and ASDM 5.2(1)
One ASA 5510 - ASA 7.2 (1) and ASDM 5.2(1)
These two firewall make site-to-site VPN connection
two ASA has three interface - the one is inside (security level is 100), the another is outside (security level is 0), the finally interface is metro (security level is also 100)
***** I didn't know why around 3 days to one week , these two ASA would hang and make all internal PC cannot access to internet, it need to uplug and replug power, and then the ASA resumed. I didn't know how to shooting this problem, is ASA version is old (7.2(1)), or other problem,
***** I didn't know how to see the log, in the matter of fact, I have already set up a syslog in the one windows server, but I see log, I found no any error log for ASA error or hang message, please everyone. To see the error logs on ASA; telnet to the device and after authentication give command "show log". This will display a long list of log messages. Point out to the log messages that have been logged at the time when the connection went down. Without the error message or syslog message it would not be possible to figure out the problem. Following link may help you to configure ASA for syslog

Asa 5505 dsl / mtu based ssl problem
Hi everyone,
We moved our office to a different location (including our dsl conncetion). We also updated our asa from 8.0.3 to 8.0.4.
Since then, I'm having trouble opening the webportal from customers having a dedicated line.
I'm getting the certificate, can confirm it but the page won't load. When setting down the MTU size on the client everything works fine. Using a DSL or UMTS Line also works like a charm.
î've set:
mtu inside 1500
mtu outside 1492
sysopt connection tcpmss 1452
crypto ipsec df-bit clear-df inside
crypto ipsec df-bit clear-df outside
i also attached an packet trace showing tcp checksum errors while loading the page.
Anybody has an idea?Julian,
You are contributing to the issue with "sysopt connection tcpmss 1452"
Change it back to the default "1380" or lower - I suggest lower I use "1300"
And the commands
crypto ipsec df-bit clear-df inside
crypto ipsec df-bit clear-df outside
AFAIK they do not apply to the SSL connections -
Cisco ASA 5505 - 2 questions - VPN Licensing; Routing
Hi,
I have a client that has a Cisco ASA 5505 security appliance. Currently it is setup as a "proof of concept" for clientless browser-based SSL VPN. The device came with 2 licenses for this service, and we need to increase that somewhere between 10-25 users. 25 users is the max on this device I believe.
I have searched Cisco.com and tried Googling the ASA 5505 for licensing but I can't find the correct license that I need for this.
The second question I have is routing capability. We have a WAN connection to another branch of the computer from this location where the ASA 5505 is located. A Cisco 2851 is used for this connection. We are wanting to bring in a high speed Internet connection for the VPN access and Internet access. What I need to know is can we put the WAN and Internet connections behind the ASA 5505 and have that route appropriately to the branch WAN for that traffic and all other traffic to the Internet?
Thanks!

SBSC Engineer -
Hi there,
i have a problem with Routing on ASA 5505.
Here is a brief explanation of the topology:
DC Upstream IP: 77.246.165.141/30
ASA 5505 Upstream to DC IP: 77.246.165.142/30
Interface outside.
There is a Cisco Switch connected to one of ASA Ethernet ports, forming Public/DMZ VLAN.
ASA 5505 Public VLAN interface ip: 31.24.36.1/26
Cisco 3750 Public VLAN interface ip: 31.24.36.62, default gateway: 31.24.36.1, IP Routing enabled on Switch.
From the Cisco Switch I can access the Internet with source ip: 31.24.36.62.
Now I have asked from DC additional subnet: 31.24.36.192/26 and they have it routed correctly towards the ASA Outside interface ip: 77.246.165.142.
I have created additional Public2 VLAN on the Switch with IP address of: 31.24.36.193/26.
On the ASA 5505 i added the route to this Public2 VLAN:
#route public 31.24.36.192 255.255.255.192 31.24.36.62 1
Now the problem is that from the Switch with Source IP: 31.24.36.193 i can ping ASA 5505 Public VLAN IP: 31.24.36.1 so the routing between subnets 31.24.36.0/26 and 31.24.36.192/26 is working OK on both the ASA 5505 and the Switch.
But I can't access the Internet from the Switch with Source IP: 31.24.36.193.Thanks for the replies.
I am running:
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.2(2)
As for NAT configuration, there is NAT configured between the Outside Interface IP and the Internal Subnet:
global (outside) 1 interface
nat (inside) 1 192.168.X.0 255.255.255.0
nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
also there is NAT exemption configured because of the Site-to-Site IPSec VPN that we have:
nat (inside) 0 access-list inside_nat0_outbound1
access-list inside_nat0_outbound1 extended permit ip any 192.168.X.0 255.255.255.0
access-list inside_nat0_outbound1 extended permit ip 192.168.X.0 255.255.255.0 OtherSiteLAN 255.255.255.0
access-list inside_nat0_outbound1 extended permit ip any 192.168.X.240 255.255.255.248
access-list inside_nat0_outbound1 extended permit ip 192.168.X.0 255.255.255.128 OtherSiteLAN 255.255.255.0
I don't have any ACL configured on the Public interface in any direction.
Here is the configuration on the Switch regarding this scenario:
interface FastEthernet2/0/X
description Access Port for Public Subnet(31.24.32.0/26) to ASA
switchport access vlan 500
switchport mode access
interface Vlan500
description Public VLAN 1
ip address 31.24.36.62 255.255.255.192
interface Vlan510
description Public VLAN 2
ip address 31.24.36.193 255.255.255.192
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 31.24.36.1
Here is the output when pinging the ASA Public Interface IP with source IP address of: 31.24.36.193(VLAN 510)
SWITCH#ping 31.24.36.1 source vlan 510
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 31.24.36.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
Packet sent with a source address of 31.24.36.193
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/4/9 ms
And here is when I try to ping some Internet host:
SWITCH#ping 8.8.8.8 source vlan 510
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 8.8.8.8, timeout is 2 seconds:
Packet sent with a source address of 31.24.36.193
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5) -
How to Support IDS in ASA 5505 and 5520?
Dear All;
we have the following HW configuration for the ASA 5505 and ASA 5520, We need to add the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) functionality to both ASA. My question is: what is/are the module(s) required to support this function, and what is the deference between IPS and IDS, does the the same Module do the both functionality?

Rashed Ward.Ok, I was not quite correct in my first post.
Those modules - only modules available for corresponding ASA models.
They all may act as IPS (inline mode) or IDS (promiscuous mode), depending on how you configure your policies.
When it acts like IPS, ASA directs all traffic through the module, so all the traffic is inspected and can be dropped inline if some signature fires.
When it acts as an IDS, ASA just copies traffic to the module for inspection, but actual traffic flow is not affected by the module, as it's not inline in this case.
Plus, those modules may be comdination of both modes. I.e. some traffic might be inspected inline, when some other (more sensitive) traffic can be inspected in promiscuous mode.
To understand this better, get familiar with this link:

Cisco ASA 5505 - problem with negotiating IP address from PPPoE
Hi all,
I have problem with negotiating IP address from PPPoE. There is following design: ISP providing vDSL ending on VDSL modem in bridge mode. Behind brigde modem is ASA 5505 terminting PPPoE on OUTSIDE. Everything works fine except negotiating IP address from PPPoE server.
I have configured ASA 5505 with (ASA Version 9.2(2)4) for PPPoE like this [1.]. But If i try to "show" IP address on OUTSIDE interface a get this [2.], ok strange but let's continue. If list "show vpdn pppinterface id 1" i get this [3.]. Seems that I got public IP addres what was right, but this IP address was not associated with interface OUTSIDE?
Well, if I set IP address manually like this [4.] and also set a default route everything works fine but what will happen when ISP change reservation for my IP address or default gateway.
I have tried different version of ASA OS like 8.4, 9.1 but without luck.
Can anybody help me. Thanks a lot.
Regards
Karel

ASA 5505 ASDM username / password
Hello everyone,
I completed the PIX 515 to ASA 5505 migration today with no problems - ok one problem with the logon for ASDM.
I'm trying no username and password - then using username and password from the 515 Pix with no success.
Anyone know how to reset the username and password for the ASDM GUI website.
Thank youUmmm,
Did you possibly try the default username/password combination? (cisco/cisco) It should then prompt you to change these settings once you gain access. I'm not familiar with how the migration works, if it transitions the user accounts over or you end up starting from scratch. Give that a try and hopefully it gets you into your new system. -
Hi all,
I received a firewall ASA 5505 and I have a problem with it. It always boot on rommon. When I do show boot I get those informations:
ciscoasa# show boot
BOOT variable =
Current BOOT variable =
CONFIG_FILE variable =
Current CONFIG_FILE variable =
I'm really confused on why it doesn't have any values registered for the boot.
Thanks,
FrancisHi Francis,
Usually the firewall boots with the the first application image that it finds in internal flash memory.
Try the following:
>Set the boot variable as:
hostname(config)# boot system url
url being:
{flash:/ | disk0:/ | disk1:/}[path/]filename
>Save the configuration:
hostname(config)# wr mem
>Now confirm that the boot image has been set:
show bootvar
Once done, reload the ASA and check if it is still going to the rommon mode.

Monitor interface vlan with ASA 5505 in HA Active/Standby Deployment
Hi,
I doing HA Active/Standby Deployment with two ASA 5505. ASA documents mention that it will monitor all physical interfaces itself to decide a failover. But in my case I configure vlan interface instead of physical interface. My inside interfaces in each ASA connect to two diferent Switches. My question is if one inside physical interface (lead to one switch) down, does the failover occur? I suspect it does not, but I would like to make sure before doing HA.
Any replies will be appreciated.Hi, I usually instead of doing a cross-connect on the inside leave it to something like A-to-A and B-to-B if the switches are not doing VSS or VPC. So I would just connect eth0/7 from ASA-A to SW-A and similar on ASA-B. This makes it cleaner.
You can then control if you want to failover if the PO goes down or any 1 of the 2 interfaces in the PO go down.
I am not saying that your above design is invalid, but I have usually done this in the past. -
ASA 5505 VPN with backup route
We are looking to set up a site-to-site VPN with a backup over a T1. We have a remote site with a 1841 router. This router has a PTP T1 back to a secondary location with a 2811. Due to location, the only option we had to get additional bandwidth was to have a cable modem installed. We want to set a site-to-site up to our primary location, with a backup route over the T1 in the event the cable modem goes down. We have an ASA 5505 at the remote location, and an ASA 5540 at the primary. In addition, we want to split the traffic across the two connections. Since the wireless controllers are anchored back to the secondary location, we want to send that traffic over the PTP T1 and the rest of the traffic over the VPN. We also need to have a backup route for the wireless traffic to send across the VPN in the event the T1 goes down.
Go to this link and scroll down to Site to Site VPN (L2L) with IOS and Site to Site VPN (L2L) with ASA, you can use the links example depicting your scenario requirements, where one end is dynamic and other static for Ipsec L2L IOS-to-ASA or ASA-to-IOS.
The best solution obiosly is having static IP addressing, make that clear with your client , but these exmaples are very good solution for your problem.
Keep in mind that the DHCP dynamic side will always be the initiator to bring up the tunnel , not the static side.

Site to Site VPN Problems With 2801 Router and ASA 5505
Hello,
I am having some issue setting up a site to site ipsec VPN between a Cisco 2801 router and a Cisco ASA 5505. I was told there was a vpn previously setup with an old hosting provider, but those connections have been servered. Right now I am trying to get the sites to talk to the 2801. Here ere are my current configs, please let me know if you need anything else. Im stumped on this one. Thanks.
