S415 SATA Interface - SATA II or SATA III?

Does anyone know what type of SATA interface is available on the S415? Is it SATA II or SATA III?

bridle_post wrote: How do I determine if my HP Pavilion HPE h8-1160 CTO supports SATA III?  HP documentation doesn't seem to be specific about SATA II or SATA III.  Considering an SDD upgrade.  Thanks.
Hello bridle_post. It appears these series of HP systems ships with either an AMD chipset and an Intel chipset.
Both these chipsets in a retail motherboard support Sata lll, but it appears that in the HP motherboard version, Sata ll are only supported.
Here  is a link to the specifications for this system with the Intel chipset, and it shows the specification for the hard drives as 3 GB/s.
Here  is the link to the AMD motherboard, and it also shows 3GB/s.

  • 5 second delay when bringing up the SATA interface (HP dm1-3100ev)

    Hello everyone,
I am using ArchLinux on a HP dm1-3100ev (aka dm1z). This little machine is equipped with an 80GB Intel X25-M SSD (2nd gen) and boots and runs nice and fast.
However, I just noticed a curious issue, where the SATA interface takes 5.3 seconds to appear. According to dmesg:

This is on linux 2.6.39. Anyone have any ideas why this is and how I can reduce this delay? This is by far the slowest part of the boot sequence right now!

According to dmesg:
dmesg wrote:[    1.510296] Switching to clocksource tsc

This is on linux 2.6.39. Anyone have any ideas why this is and how I can reduce this delay? This is by far the slowest part of the boot sequence right now!

  • Is my SATA Interface failing?

    History:
Macbook Pro 13" (late 2008 with Snow Leopard installed) would not shutdown. I left it on overnight hoping it would shutdown but it was still at a gray screen in the morning. So I force-powered it off by holding the power button. When powering on again, all I got was the flashing folder with a question mark in it. Turns out the hard drive had a couple of busted blocks which happened to be right where the partition table and the allocation file (B Tree) seemed to be. I replaced the drive with a new one, installed OSX Lion (10.7.2 from App Store) on it and copied over the data from my backups. Then I got massive system freezes; spinning beach balls while typing. Sometimes it would resolve itself after a few minutes, sometimes it wouldn't, even after a few hours.
Checking the console, I found a few of these:
    kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error
I installed SMARTReporter, it said the drive was fine but it notified me every time when these i/o errors occurred, which was about once every hour or so.
So I ran the long Apple Hardware Test, took about 5 hours and I got just one error:
    4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0)
After some googling, everyone seemed to agree that's because of a failing hard drive, possibly a failing SATA interface. To rule out the failing SATA interface, I popped in an old 80 GB SATA drive into the Macbook Pro and ran the extended hardware test again: "no troubles found". I though "great, my replacement hard drive is bad, I'll just send it in and get another one".
But after simply surfing around with Safari (no extensions, just flash 11), the the whole system Freezes up again. Spinning Beachball, most apps (including Console, Mail, Safari) not responding at all, all I can do is move windows around. Can't even look at the console because the window was just white. But syslogd too 170% CPU according to application monitor.
After a reboot (nothing happens even if I wait for a whole day for it to do its thing), everything seems fine but spotlight starts indexing everything.
    Here's my Questions:
    - How can I avoid these complete system freezes?
    - How can I make sure it's not my SATA interface that's causing it? Would running the system via USB rule that out? I can't keep returning hard drives all the time if they're not actually defective.

Okay, 250GB drives (other than SSDs and SAS) are old and today's drives really are nice cheap and fast(er). Yes, 1/3 free space sounds fine.
why bother and waste time with repairing (receipt) permissions? there isn't anything wrong with them.
Clone your system, repair with Disk Warrior, boot from clone.
    your hard drive needs repairs.
Did you format drive before installing SL?
    did you clone and backup?
is everything you run and all extensions and drivers, utility, etc SL-compatible? heck. some drivers just came out to support SL and be 32-bit/64-bit (2008 Mac Pro, not yours, can boot in 64-bit kernel mode).

Is the onboard SATA controller SATA I? II? or III?
Is it also a RAID controller? If so, what RAID configurations does it support?

  • Need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor

We need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor to this laptop however there are 2 main question before we purchase those hardware:
1 - will it be bootable at all?
2 - what speed is going to be provided by the ExpressCard slot on this laptop - is it comparable with E-SATA standard?
I'm purchasing the card here http://www.ebay.com/itm/add-2-eSATA-Hard-Disk-ports-for-Laptop-Notebook-PC-fits-34mm-Expresscard-slo...   but still can't understand is it compatible and what speed will I get on the slot of my laptop - taking into account your official specification:
    "    1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)"
Could you please advise us on the above?

wiki explains that "...The ExpressCard has a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbit/s through PCI Express and 480 Mbit/s through USB 2.0 dedicated for each slot, while all CardBus devices connected to a computer share a total 1.06 Gbit/s bandwidth." - but:
how can I know whichever bus (PCIExpress or USB) is used in my laptop for this interface?

  • V570 reports HDD at SATA 1.5 rather than SATA 3.0 (SATA I vs. SATA II)

I know there will be plenty to say, and this is only my second post on the forum, but  trust that I understand what I am asking.
I know that the real world difference between SATA generations for HDDs is miniscule.  I also know how to implement, and check the storage controllers.
I have the correct drivers, and REGARDLESS OF MY REASONS, I would like to know why my Seagate 5400.6 is running at SATA 1.5 and not SATA 3.0.
I checked it over and over after installing the Chipset, the AHCI, and the RST driver.  I even tried countless versions of both, so I am fairly sure that its not a driver or software issue.  That leaves:  The chipset, The "UEFI/BIOS", or the HDD firmware.  I should also mention that my last, and only other experience with Lenovo was with the T61 series that had the SATA II governer placed on it.  I don't know how you would feel about that, but I simply did not like it.
There is one other promising post that is hasnt been updated for a while, but on it there is information about seagate Firmware.  That being said, I have seen the same issue, without resolution, tucked in the far reaches of the forums of cyberspace....Its a Mystery.
I should mention that  the machine is question is a:
Lenovo V570 with the 2nd Gen i5 2450, Sandy Bridge Architecture (so not the 2 port intel problem) and HM65 Chipset(so perfectly capable of SATA II).
    Windows 7 64bit

I'm also wondering this about my V570.
I went to install an SSD into the optical drive bay, and even though system states everything should be Sata 3 Capable (6gbits/sec) it was capping at sata II speeds (3gbits/sec).
Can others chime in on what the heck is going on here?

  • What kind of sata interface do i need to retrieve data from mac 2009

ATTENTION MAC GEEKS!!!  My warranty has run out on my macbook and I have a corrupted hard-drive. After mistaking the display adapter port on my macbook 2009 for a thunderbolt port (wishful thinking on my part) I finally realized this version of macbook does not have any type of firewire OR thunderbolt port, and neither does the mac I borrowed to use as a target drive through which to run data rescue software. I did come across some people saying they used ethernet to interface the two macs, so after trying forever to set that up with no luck I found references to a "migration" applet that I would need to download to both computers. Since one has a damaged hard drive and will only boot from the install disk (but cannot be repaired with it), I can't exactly download the "migration" applet and the support documentation for my data rescue software states that an ethernet connection will not work at all anyway! Unfortunately my time machine died about six months ago, and all I really, really, really REALLY want is access to my documents folder on the macbook with the corrupted/damaged hard drive. The software documentation does say that a SATA connection will work and allow my second mac to scan the broken mac h/d. I've come across some usb - sata connections, but have also come across articles saying that using any form of usb connection to run a scan on a h/d won't work as usb (older usb, probably 2.0) is too slow. Darn, darn darn. I hadn't wanted to open the macbook if I didn't have to, but as I have to I will. However I don't feel comfortable making a sata to sata connection between the two drives as the second machine does not belong to me. How should I approach this? I am just sooo.....grrr about the missing ports on these Macbooks. I really hadn't notices as I never had to do this before! Any suggestions/help would be appreciated !!! would it work using this usb/sata connection? And so I don't get even more surprises, do all sata work on all h/d's? I used to network and maintain pc's, even setting up secondary h/d's but those were desktops and it was a few years ago, AND everything Apple just seems so...proprietary to me. PLEASE HELP!!!

You can replace the internal disk with a new one and then reinstall the operating system.  As you do that, save the corrupted drive and place it in an external enclosure which you then plug into your working MacBook.  You can then try to salvage data off of the corrupted disk (if possible).
For a new internal disk you might as well purchase a 1 TB fast hybrid SSD-disk since it only costs $105 and will speed up your system considerably.  The following reference will include the external enclosure you will need into which you can put the corrupted disk.  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/YTOS1TBHYS/ .  You can find instructions for the repair at http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac_Laptop.
If the corrupt will spin any you cannot retrieve the files using the Finder then try using DiskWarrior, uFlysoft, or McAfee Data Recovery for Mac.

Once it is in the external enclosure, if it won’t spin give it a gentle tap on a table and see if it will.  I have revived several disk drives that way.

  • ThinkPad T61P (6460-D8G) - which SATA interface?

    Hello,
    I'd like to add a second hard disk to my ThinkPad T61P (model 6460-D8G). I came up with a couple of possibilities;
    1) Hitachi Travelstar 7K320 160gb  (model HTS723216L9A360)
     * this drive has an SATA 3GB/s interface !!!
    2) Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 160gb (model HTS722016K9SA00)
     * this has an SATA 1.5 GB/s interface, and is exactly the same model as the primary hard disk I already have.
These two disks are of the same physical size.
Now, I quess the most important question here is; does my ThinkPad support the #1 drive? In other words, does this computer have an SATA 3GB/s interface? This bit of information I haven't been able to find anywhere?!
If this ThinkPad model does NOT have SATA 3GB interface, will I still be able to connect a SATA 3GB drive to it, or should I just buy the slower SATA 1.5GB model?
Btw, does the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (model 40Y8725) also support SATA 3GB? If this computer supports SATA 3GB, can I connect the #1 drive to the adapter, or should I swap the disks so that the primary disk goes to bay adapter and the new drive replaces the primary disk inside the computer?
Sorry if my english is not very fluent, but could someone still try and help me out here, as I just can't seem to find the answers anywhere myself...

Ok, thank you for your reply, wjli2.
I quess that solves the problem then. I can use which ever of those two drives I can get first, but will not benefit from the faster interface in drive #1.
Too bad my retailer estimated I may have to wait for about 4 weeks to get my hands on one of those . I quess others have also found those two to be good drives.

    Hi,
I'm guessing but the mSATA is directly connected to the motherboard so it should use the SATA III connection..

  • 13" MBP SATA interface downgraded to 1.5 Gigabit

I just checked my system information and the sata connection is reporting 1.5 Gigabit as the speed. I discovered this when I benchmarked my Vertex 60GB SSD and noticed that the speeds were a lot slower than before (I used to have a 15" umbp). Did apple downgrade the sata connection? This is a huge disappointment and very surprising.

    Well,
I also just got a 13" and installed an Intel X25 drive (160gb) and then stumbled upon this thread. I've called Apple Care to get more information. Waiting to hear back.
In the meantime ran xbench on my machine so I could compare it to other machines and got a score of 198.91. The results for a base 2.53GHz, 4gb RAM, 250gb 5400 drive configuration was also out there on the xbench site and the results for that machine were 137.17. When looking at the read write speeds, with the SSD don't lose anything but on the read side the differences are very dramatic.
This does not answer the question about the limitations of SATA I vs SATA II but at least shows a dramatic increase in the score with the swap in hard drive.
I will update if I get more tech support info

  • How to Reset the Sata Link Controller for Full Sata 3 speeds on an OCZ Agility 3

So I purchased a new OCZ Agility 3 drive, installed it into the main bay of my 2012 Macbook Pro, and the drive was running at half speed. I called OCZ and spoke to the guys about how to resolve this issue, they were very knowledgeable, but they had no ideas how to make thier Linux Live Tool work on the Mac, which gives us the ability to reset the controller. Here's what I did to get the full speeds out of my OCZ Agility 3.
    - You will need a Windows computer, or the ability to create and install Windows on a Bootcamp partition on your Mac.
    - Thumb Drive
    - Lots of Patience
    1. Open Disk Utility and create one partition on your thumb drive under MS-DOS Fat 32. Click the Options tab and select “Master Boot Record.”
    2. Go to the OCZ forum and download the older Linux Live Tool version: OCZ_Tools_316-old.zip. From my experience, the newer version doesn’t work on the 2012 Macbook Pro.
3.Download the “Universal USB Installer” for Windows, and follow the steps to install the ISO to your Thumb Drive using the instructions located on the OCZ Forum. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?99275-NEW!-Bootable-Linux -based-tools-for-OCZ-SSD-s&p=714047&viewfull=1#post714047
    4. Once the ISO is successfully copied to the Thumb Drive, insert the USB stick into your Mac with the OCZ SSD installed in the Main Bay, Power On, and hold down the “Option” key. You should see a yellow hard disk icon that says “Windows,” select it and press enter.
    5. Once the OCZ Tool loads up, click the “Green Arrows” to put the drive into Sata II mode. Shutdown the computer, power on, and check the System Profiler. The drive should be running at Sata II speeds.
    6. Shutdown the computer and boot into the OCZ Tool, and click on the “Red Arrows.” This will reset the controller to its default mode of Sata III (Sata 6 Mode).
    7. Check the speed of the drive using the disk speed test of your choice. The drive should now be running at full speed.
The biggest accomplishment here was actually getting the OCZ Linux Live Tool to load on a 2012 Macbook Pro. The newer version of the tool doesnt support the USB 3.0 drivers, so you loose the funtion of your trackpad and keyboard or bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
**Note: Black Magic Disk Speed Test Version 2.0 may give you lower numbers than expected due to the compression method in testing the drive. I would prefer using XBench or Disk Speed Test Version 1.0**
***Here's a link to a thread that explains how to properly install your OS onto the drive. If not done correctly, this can also cripple the speed of the drive.***

I can almost see a big grin appearing in Bob's avatar...
Hopefully his reply has given you a clue already?
    If not, some explanation:
Many settings in the standard "Media" panel (for both video and audio) don't apply for publications that need to go the Folio-way. This panel is mainly concerned with lovely Flash stuff, but apart from the Poster frame and the Markers, it is useless for Folio's.
A quick guide: create a video with the necessary codec (H.264 for video, MP# or AAC for audio) at the required pixel size (exact width/height). Simply Place the file in InDesign, but don't scale it (or recreate and place a properly sized new video afterwards). Choose what to do with the Poster frame (and maybe some Markers), but all other settings are done in the Overlay Creator.
Check Bob Bringhurst's Tutorials and his DPS Tips app for more info. But I guess you get the idea now.

  • HP dv6-6117dx, can I install an SSD in this? SATA 2-3.0 or SATA 3-6.0?

Hi all, I read the manual for the dv6-6117dx laptop, and it stated only Intel based versions of this laptop were able to use SATA based SSD drives, but I think it was referring to SATA 6. Can I install a SATA 3.0 SSD in this laptop as I have a SATA 3.0 SSD 64GB in my desktop that I thought maybe I'd move over to the laptop, but not sure if this is doable due to the manuals reference to Intel only? I would think that an SSD at SATA 2.0 standards would work, but Thanks for any replies.
AMD 3500M, 500GB SATA drive, 4GB ram, etc.

Hi Pepe, a lot of confusion going on with the new sata designations. I think for everyone's information, I'll try to set the record straight as far as what I have read on the subject, and what the SATA committee, commission, or what-have-you, stated they would like people to refer to SATA standards as. Not sure these are set in stone, but I think they are. Please correct me if I am mistaken. I won't go into anything below sata 2.0 as I either didn't read that part or don't remember. lol
SATA II or 2.0 refers to SATA 3Gbps not SATA 3.0 - Sata III or 3 does refer to SATA 3.0 which is the current top standard at 6Gbps, hence SATA 6. This is the way it was, but I think now, they have simplified it to either SATA 3 or SATA 6 so there is no confusion, 3 is 3Gbps - 6 is 6Gbps. This is what I read they would like drive makers to label their drives as, and skip the 2.0, and 3.0 monikers. There is also going to be, soon, if not already, SATA Express which will boost performance to 6Gbps, 8Gbps, or 16Gbps using the pci express slot. SSD manufacturers are making them faster, and faster which is good for us as prices on lesser drives will drop, hopefully, and we can use the express slot included in just about all computers, and not have to purchase a SATA 6 controller card.
And thanks Pepe for reminding me I already knew the answer. The SATA standards are compatible across all speeds, and connections so an SSD should be no problem, but at SATA 3 or less speed, depending on what's in this laptop. I do know it has a SATA HD, and SATA DVD, but don't get why HP would not implement the 6Gbps standard which you, and the AMD specs say, is embedded in the chipset? I'm hoping maybe it's a bios thing or some other update that will fix it because if my current drives are running off an AMD chipset, and the computer has a SATA HD & DVD, then it stands to reason the hardware is there as SATA standards for the 3500m CPU chipset include it. Unless there is a different AMD chipset in here? Hmm, very thought provoking. Maybe I'll call tech support, and try to get an answer because it doesn't make sense at all.
Anyhoo Pepe, thanks for taking the time to respond to this. Just trying to think why there would be no SSD drive availability on this particular laptop as opposed to one that is exactly the same except has an Intel chipset? I'm wondering whether HP cut some corners here as AMD's chipset, specification-wise, is superior to Intel's at this point in the game. Thanks again, and please, anybody, if you know the answers to these questions, assumptions, please cough up some info so I don't have to call Tech, and beg for tier 2-3 support. lol
P.S.. I love this laptop, and doubt any answer is going to make me return it, but I am curious as to why no SATA 6, and maybe not even SATA 3 when the chipset supposedly supports it, and there are 2 SATA drives already integral to the laptop. I am assuming on a laptop, the CPU's corresponding chipset would have to be installed. Given this has SATA drives in it, and a chipset supporting SATA connections, SATA 2.0 should work.

    SATA Terminology
The name SATA II has become synonymous with the 3 Gbit/s standard. In order to provide the industry with consistent terminology, the SATA-IO has compiled a set of marketing guidelines for the third revision of the specification.
The SATA 6 Gbit/s specification should be called Serial ATA International Organization: Serial ATA Revision 3.0.
The technology itself is to be referred to as SATA 6 Gb/s.
A product using this standard should be called the SATA 6 Gb/s [product name].
Using the terms SATA III or SATA 3.0 to refer to a SATA 6 Gbit/s product is unclear and not preferred. SATA-IO has provided a guideline to foster consistent marketing terminology across the industry.
What I origianlly read was the designations SATA 3 Standing For SATA II, 2.0 & 3Gbps, and Sata 6 referencing Sata III, 3.0 & 6.0Gbps, so Sata 3 & Sata 6 sound great, no confusion, no need for Gbps or Gb/s as seen above, SATA 3 & 6, and soon to be SATA Express 8 Gb/s & 16 Gb/s All Sata designations should be geared to actual throughput of the specification to simplify the juggernaut of unneeded information, and resulting complictaions. They should all be simplified as SATA 3, SATA 6, SATA E8, and SATA E16. Why complicate matters with revisions, etc, we all know what they mean when stated as I have layed out, at least IMO! lol Take care all This is off topic, but hope it helps some users understand SATA  terminology, and sorry Pepe for misleading you, and otherswith incorrect information provided in the topic of this thread.
Forgot, this has USB 3.0 ports so I know it has the coresponding chipset for the AMD A8 3500M CPU which supports SATA 6. HP, please answer why this laptop will not allow install of an SSD rated at SATA 6, and possibly not an SSD rated at SATA 3?

  • Sat P300-156: BSOD when SATA controller compatibility mode was chosen

Can someone tell me diferences between SATA controler in BIOS.
There are two options "AHCI" and "Compability".
First time i have option AHCI enabled.
Now i have the second because if i change the option on start windows i have Blue screen.

    Hi
Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is a open interface standard for SATA controller. It allows communicating with the SATA controller using a driver.
If the setting AHCI was chosen in the BIOS then the connected SATA HDDs will be addressed using the NCQ (Native Command Queuing).
If you want to know more details about NCQ, then google simply.
However, the AHCI must be chosen in the BIOS to ensure the properly working of SATA controller.
