S540 low performance

Hello everyone,
My issue is - brand new Lenovo s540 works very slow. Symptoms:
1) HD video playback lags (i have descibed it here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/s540-HD-video-playback-lags/td-p/1843284)
2) Low benchmark results. For instance, Cinebench "CPU multi 64bit" result is only 70 points (should be around 230 - 250)
3) Lags in performance demanding apps, MS Visual Studio, Chrome development tools.
Spec is i7, SSD, 8GB RAM, intel HD Graphics and Radeon HD 8600M
I have tried OS refresh, installed all latest drivers via Lenovo update (including bios update) - didn't help.
Lenovo diagnostic tool says everything is fine.
Whati it is, hardware failure ?

Since, i am using the 65W power adpater.
I wonder whether to enable Turbo-Boost of  i5 - 540M, even using 65W adpater. As I know Intel is allow i5-540M boost its core1 automatically (depends on some condition)
Does it need to 90W adapter + attached battery to allow Turbo-Boost feature in x201 ? Could Lenovo modify x201 BIOS to enable Turbo Boost even only attached 65W adapter ?
Thanks!
There is a turbo boost service in the services for windows 7. You may need to start the service.
Intel also has a turbo boost monitor program.  It is a bar graph that shows your clock speed.

  • Low performance USB port on X61

    Hi,
Recently I found my X61 has a low USB performance, when I copy files to my external USB HDD, the speed is about 13MB/s. Then I tested X61's writing speed on external USB HDD with HDtune and ATTO Disk benchmark, it is around 12-14MB/s. But The USB HDD have a writing speed over 25MB/s on other computers.
I have three USB HDDs of different model, and the USB writing speed on X61 is all the same, so it must be the problem of X61.
Anyone has the same problem? Any solution to this problem?

  • X220 GPU has low performance after wake up on batteries

Hi, I've got this problem. My X220's GPU doesn't perform well after waking up on batteries. The performance is low (about 50% of normal). My drivers, BIOS etc. are up to date. What helps is restarting the computer but it's not solution for me becouse I like to have started a lot of programs. I reinstalled my Win Pro 64bit but without success. The problem still persists. Do you have any experience with this kind of problem? Thanks!
    P.S. Sorry for my english
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had something similar before, it could be due to Battery Stretch limiting the CPU load. Only real way to solve it is to restart. You could try putting it to sleep and wake up again though, it might work (I haven't tried it myself).

  • Low memory performance

When doing any memory performance tests on my new to me T61, Windows 7, 64bit, 4GB's memory machine, I have very slow performance results compared to any other known similar configurations.
2 well known sites I've tested at are http://browse.geekbench.ca/ and http://www.pcpitstop.com/ (Yeah, I know, most people think that site stinks)
I had 32bit Windows 7 on here with 3GB's memory and scored low with that OS also. Thought  I'd give 64bit Windows a shot. Absolutely no difference what so ever!
When testing at pcpitstop, the ONLY score that is even close to being respectable is the video (Nvidia card).
Is this laptop really as bad as those scores indicate? It doesn't really seem to be running to bad, although it doesn't "feel" as fast or score as high  as my Toshiba Satellite A135 with only 2GB's memory and a 1.6ghz single core proessor.
Any have any tips for getting this thing to crank like I "think" it should?
    Thank you

Hard to say - the overall performance shouldn't be sub-par for the T61.
What scores are you getting, and what do you think you should be getting?

  • T500 performance loss and restart issue after low battery shutdown

    Hi,
Some days ago I experienced a significant loss in performance of my T500. Unfortunately it seems to be a continuous loss and the games I play, e.g. empire total war that did run ok before are nearly unplayable at the moment.
Additionally, when the computer shuts down due to low battery, it no longer manages to resume windows but always crashs during reboot (black screen and hard disk symbol is moving, no other activity for 10 minutes)
I am working with the standard vista installation and installed all automatic updates, but also every time when I shutdown the computer, no matter how long it has been running (even after 1 minute and after a rebooting 3 minutes ago), the red shutdown symbol in start shows that an update needs to be installed.
    any ideas?
    Many thanks in advance !

Well, the problem, seem's to have reoccured: Battery ran out (even the indicator leds on the side didn't show any life), Time reset  to 1.1.2001, again some rebooting and setting the time again...
Is this a sign of a degrading battery health status?
It looks like reseting the SMC didn't help after all.

  • LENOVO S860 Poor Performance in Low Signal Locations

Just bought two of this phone (2 GB RAM international model) for myself and a colleague.
I'm really pleased with the build. However, I have to say it doesn't perform well in low signal locations and this is quite worrisome as I work in a low signal location so miss most of my daily calls. Such a brilliant phone can't be flawed by the most basic and important function.
LENOVO please release an update to fix this low signal problem asap. Thanks.

Am facing this issue from last four months, Lenovo is not interested in solving this problem. My suggestion is replace this with some other brand. Even Redmi 1s (INR 6000)  has better signal compared to Lenovo s860.

  • How do I turn off and on the icon size slider bar at the lower right status bar of a folder window.

I have been trying for days to help a friend with a new iMac to turn on the icon size slider bar that on my iMac appears at the bottom of ever folder when it is open when in the "view" > "icon" mode.  I cannot find anything that discusses this slider bar.  I can turn this status bar off and on on both my machine and my friends machine, but I cannot turn off or on the slider on either machine.

This did not help.  I am a Mac User since 1984 and generally I am never stymied buy the Mac OS, but this one has me.   I can open and close the lower status bar, as you described, and that works fine for me because I have the icon slider bar already there and it works fine; however when I open the lower status bar on my friends machine there is no icon size slider bar, and I can't seem to find out how to get it there, as it is on my machine or at all. The icon size can be controlled from the View menu, but as a photographer, it is really handy to have it at the bottom of the folder window.  Thanks for trying.

  • Increase counter frequency performance

    Hello,
I want to increase the frequency performance for my period counter. I'm using a USB-6210 board and I have the vi that is attached - period measurement.
The problem is that I want to measure the period for a 8MHz signal (I know that is a lot, I would be happy even with 4MHz). The source freq for the counter is 80Hz. If the frequency is high, the accuracy is not very critical for me.
    1. I get most of the time the error: "Buffer overwritten". I've seen that I can get rid of it if I decrease the frequency, but I don't want to do that . I think that another solution would be to increase the number of points that are read. I noticed that the maximum buffer size is around 9000 points (I've read it with DAQmxRead Property Node).
    2. Another fact that I've noticed is that in the While loop where I'm doing the Data Reading I should have no other operations or delay. Is this true, or just a coincidence?
    3. There is a strange behavior: if I start the acquisition and I have at the input high frequency, I get the error (Buffer overwritten) almost instant. If I start acquisition at low freq I can increase it even at high freq.
    4. There is another strange behavior: if the input frequency is high the frequency and the measured period increase and decrease togheter. I think that this is caused by alias. Where can I find some more information about the board limits?
If you can give me some other advice/hints/links/pdfs I would be very thanksful.
Maybe there are some small mistakes in the VI. I made it only to get a feeling of what I'm doing. I didn't chek it with the hardware.

    Jochen,
thanks for this information. This was what I was looking for some while.
I still have a question related to this topic: I've read that the maximum size of FIFO is 1024 samples. What does it mean?
[JK:] The FIFO is the hardware buffer on the board. In general the PCI-bus or the USB should have enough bandwidth to transfer the data as fast as they are acquired by the device, but in fact there are sometimes some latencies that require some local memory on the board. That's what is called FIFO in this context.
This FIFO is the same with the: Available Samples Pro Channel from Read Property node?
[JK:]  No. This value refers to the buffer in the PC's memory that is allocated for the acquisition operation.
I've noticed that when the value for this property is passing 9000 I get the error with Overwritten Buffer. If it is like this why do I reach more than 9000 samples pro channel? Please take a look at the attachement (test1.png - screenshoot with the values / speed_test_x - the VI that I used for this measurement).
[JK:] The buffer size is not limited to 9000 values. NI-DAQmx allocates memory automatically by default. If you like you can increase the buffer size manually.
Which is the relation between maximum numbers of sample that can be read with the Counter 1D Read NSamples? In my VI there are N=250 samples. Can I increase it in order to avoid the error? If yes, which should be the maximum limit, 1024 ?
[JK:] You can increase the number of values to read up to the size of the buffer (not of the FIFO). A reasonable value is up to 50% of the buffer size, but this is not a strict rule. Anything between 10% and 90% could make sense, depending on the timing requirements of your application.

  • T410s Optimus game performance / heat

    Hello, I have a 2 year old T410s.
I'm  trying to play the Diablo 3 beta.  However, after a couple minutes of in-game action the game slows down to a crawl.
I have Thinkpad Fan Control running at fan state 80 (6000+ RPMs) and even so the temperature is reaching the low 90 degrees C.
I know there have been overheating issues with the T410s.  Have these ever been fixed?  Do I need to contact warranty support for assistance?
    Thanks

Well I'm playing a game that should run on Intel HD graphics.  I've had similar problems with SC2 which was an older game as well
And the temperature thing has come up while doing things such as watching netflix videos.  I'm assuming that temperatures hot enough to nearly boil water aren't a commonplace sort of thing
I'm not playing Crysis or anything.  You would think a $2k (at the time) computer would have some ability to use its graphics chip, no?

  • G585 - terrible performance - can anybody help

    Hi,
I bought this laptop about a month ago for my mother, she does not need a lot from a notebook. The notebook had Win 8 preinstalled and I was surprised how slow it was. It took me quite a while to download and install Win 8.1. Then I decided that it was about available RAM because out of 2 Gb RAM the video processor was using 384 Mb and what left is insufficient for a 64 bit OS.
I put inside 8 Gb, 2x4Gb recommended Ramaxel modules, they are listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual. No luck. I ran a Windows Experience Assessment - Microsoft excluded in from 8.1 but the opportunity is still out there, CPU rating is 3.5. The CPU is AMD E1-1200.
Can anyone imagine a modern notebook with 8Gb RAM which lags playing Spider Solitaire? I got one. The system is naked, only stock MacAfee antivirus running and the game still lags. The notebbok is in mint condition, no dust deposits around the fan so no overheating, it just is not designed to perform at any acceptable rate. I can't believe Lenovo put it is the market with this CPU and Win 8 64 bit, they should have tested it before (and should recall the model with AMD CPUs worldwide now I think, that's about reputation).
Anyway I own it, does anybody know how I can improve the performance other than change the OS - it is way too costly? Thank you.

  • Reduced Performance When No Battery

I've noticed something on my T510 that's interesting and also a little disturbing. If I run the T510 off the power adapter, without the battery, the clock frequency never goes over 50% (according to the Win7 Resource Monitor) even though both processor cores are at 100% load (I am using LinX to load the processor). The CPU temp is only 42c so it's not a temperature issue. I have the power options set for max performance. If I put the battery in, the max frequency immediately goes to 110% (Turbo Boost), so this behavior seems to be a power issue.  I guess it is by design, the battery is used as secondary power source when extra power is needed, if the battery is not there than the clock stays low. This is a little disturbing though, because it means  that I have to leave the battery in  the laptop - not the best thing for the battery life.
The T510 comes with two different power adapters, a 65w and a 90w. I have the 65w. I wonder if there would be a change in this behavior if I got the 90w adapter. I would really appreciate it if somebody with the 90w adapter would run a test (take out battery, load cpu, and check clock freq with Resource Monitor) and let us know the result. TIA!

    Hello Myron999,
that is totally normal and your ThinkPad is working as designed.
The best thing you can do with a battery is to use it, if you´re plugged in, then the Lenovo Powermanger will do all for you regarding the battery health.
So stick your battery in and enjoy your system running at full performance, if needed.

  • Z820 - Performance Issue

    Dears,
     I have a Z820 16GB ( Xeon processor ) and a Dell Precision M4500 8GB ( i7 CPU  @ 2.13 GHz ), in both ,  the operating system is Window 7 64-bit ,
Office 10 is installed in both
While working on Excel files, i have experienced very low performance of Z820 when compared to the Dell M4500
In M4500 , i could open 4 huge excel files ( 55MB each ) and work on them simultaneously with no any problem , no interruption and no ( Not responding message ) , while in the Z820 , i had to force closing the files in many occasions due to ( not responding message in some cases or because the screen turned into black and flashes.
I had done some test as following:
Opened the same excel file in both workstations, typed my excel formulas that spread into 14 columns and run them down to 500,000 rows, the M4500 finished in 22 seconds , while the Z820 at the first time stopped with the ( Not responding message ) but in the second test it could finish the same function in 8 minutes.
I can share with you the formulas taht i used in excel if that helps.
I am really surprised because the spics of Z820 is much more greater than the spics of M4500
Could you please advise me what to do and where to start to resolve this problem?

  • Record and Playback performance goes down at high frequency

    Hi,
    We're testing record and playback using USRP-2920( LV 2013sp1, NI-USRP 14)
To test it, we downloaded record and playback example code.
Signal source is a function generator outputting 6 MHz bandwidth 8 VSB modulation signal.
USRP Rx parameters are center = variant / gain = 0 / IQ rate = 25MHz and Tx parameters are center = same as Rx center / gain = 0 / IQ rate = 25MHz
The problem is... in low carrier frequency like 70MHz, quality of playback signal is great.
But in high carrier freqency like 2.2GHz, SNR and signal power dropped significantly i.e. they tend to drop as carrier frequency goes high.
And  the strange thing is as carrier frequency is increased, a small peak on the center is increased as well.
Please check the attatched file to see the tendancy.
So.. my question is why is this tendancy occures?(we tested another USRP and the result was same as before)
and what should we do to reduce this effect?

    Youngmin

    Hi,
I suggest a couple of things:
NI USRP 2920 is a non-calibrated device. So setting a gain value of 0 at different frequencies could mean a different actual gain. So try increasing the Rx recording gain (on the USRP) in cases where you observe low SNR. Similarly Tx is not calibrated.
Is the signal recording done with cables or over wireless medium ? You can try to eliminate any spurious signals if you use SMA cables while recording.
I think the power at the center of the spectrum is the DC offset. You may refer to the DC Offset/LO leakage section in the best practices section here http://www.ni.com/white-paper/13881/en/
