S540 Switchable Graphics question

Hi.
Is here someone who has installed win 8 or 8.1 on your own and has working switchable graphic on lenovo thinkpad S540?
If yes what drivers have you installed ?
Or can someone help me with switchable graphics problem ?
I have installed all drivers from lenovo support and switching of graphics doesn't work.
Thanks
Jan

Hi, here is my solution for S440 - its are very simular computers:
try reinstall drivers from Lenovo site to your computer and Windows 8.1: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page#
You can use Lenovo Upgrade Ulity.
1) I installed driver for Intel HD graphics from Lenovo website version 10.18.10.3316 (it is old driver but modify for S540)
2) Then I installed AMD Catalyst Controller Center 13.9  from Lenovo website version 13.152.1.1400
3) And then you can't install optional actualization from Windows Upgrade called "AMD Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3" - it change graphics version!
Then everything is OK. No sleeping problem, brightness control and mainly Catalyst Controller is working good.
But only with this combination of drivers! (I tried some other new drivers but unsuccesfully)
I hope it will help you to solve all problems.

  • Noob Question: T400 Switchable Graphics?

Just got my T400 this weekend, and I have a question about the switchable graphics feature.
I can't actually find any way to control the switchable graphics.  I see the different battery life options and that type of thing, but is there anything that actually says SWITCHABLE GRAPHICS?
I was looking in the Power Manager app but found nothing.
I did go into the BIOS at startup and verified that I do have this option.
Can anyone help a noob out?

  • Windows 8 Consumer Preview: AMD Switchable Graphics - Unswitchable

    Hello everyone,
I have a HP Pavillion dv6-6004tx notebook computer, and I recently upgraded it to the Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Build 8250). I would like some troubleshooting from those who have/are experiencing this and may have found a way around it.
As far as the specs of my computer goes:
    Intel Core i7-2720QM
    6 GB DDR3 RAM
    64-Bit OS
    AMD Radeon HD 6700M
    Intel Graphics Family
The problem lies within my display drivers. Some of you may also have a Switchable Graphics feature installed in your computers. But for those who don't, basically what it is is a feature that allows one to switch their display adaptor from a Power-Saving GPU to a High-Performance GPU, and vice versa.
In my case, as you can see above, the High-Performance GPU is the Radeon 6700M, while the Power-saving GPU is the integrated Intel one. My problem deals with not being able to switch back and forth between them, like I was able to back on Windows 7. As this is a feature of AMD Catalyst Control Center, I have searched their website and they actually have a supported driver version for Windows 8 CP, albeit it still being a beta and sometimes glitchy.
    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Windows8ConsumerPreviewDrivers.aspx
(As you can see, my model: AMD Radeon HD 6000M Series is listed)
After installing the Control Center, I restarted and a pop-up notifcation tells me that:
"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your AMD graphics driver, or enable your AMD adapter using the Displays Manager."
I found this odd at first, as my model clearly was listed. But after some inferencing, I realized that my computer must be running on the integrated Intel graphics by default. This was further reinforced when I tried playing some games and other applications (It would be slightly choppy - as experienced before when I had forgotten to switch back onto High-Performance GPU).
The AMD Radeon card used to have an error (The device won't start. Code: 10) under device manager, but with a fresh install of the driver obtained from AMD, it seems to be working fine. However, my computer is still using the Intel card by default, and I have no way of switching to the other GPU as Catalyst will not start.
Has anyone found a way around this?
    This question was solved.

I'll give you a two way to make it work!!!!  There is so much incompatibilities with the FIRST METHOD listed, you won't get use a Intel (less power consuming card) GPU to work after the changes! you've got to wait till HP let's it work properly or deal with power hungry AMD GPU even in battery mode .
THE SECOND METHOD listed works without any problem with compatibility in any apps BUT IT IS Require pace and order ( may be exhaustive  for newbie's, no worries listed below got all the info you need to make it work)
    SO the first option:
NOTE:THIS WILL TRIGER THE OUTCONTROL EVENTS SO PRECAUTION METHODS I WILL ADVISE FURTHER AS WE GO STEP BY STEP _ DOWNLOAD CHROME IF YOU RUNNING INTERNET EXPLORER ( GRAPHIC CARD WILL WORK WITH GAMES BUT NOT WITH METRO APPS THEY WILL NOT CRASH JUST NOT LAUNCH
ALL THE METHODS BELOW TESTED BY MYSELF AND GET WORKED YET MANY INCOMPATIBILIES STILL WILL REMAIN USE IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!
as i can tell all the games working properly yet battlefield 3 won't launch
    1.      AT first make sure that windows UPDATE IS SWITCH OFF or let you choose to download and instal (not automaticly or it will update ur device (at device manager) without ur permision and all eforts are gone!
2.uninstall AMD Catalyst from "program and components" at control panel, then uninstal all the devices Intel and AMD at device manager at the control panel  (check unistal driver at intel HD driver)
3.reboot! after reboot download this http://www2.ati.com/drivers/hotfix/win8/amd_catalyst_win8_consumer_preview_[rc10].exe
    and this
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53025.exe       -      300mb
    4. instal sp53025.exe at windows 7 compatibility mode (it'll unpack by default in C:/SWsetup)
then start the istalation make sure u choose a "custom" , THIS IS CRUCIAL - uncheck the CATALYST (check all the rest intell driver amd driver ect.) after the instalation do not reboot
    5.      Next start the instalation of the windows 8 consumer preview driver from AMD.
uncheck all the rest ( after the sp53025 there will be only AMD driver (check/uncheck) and the catalyst (check/uncheck) box available) uncheck the AMD driver and install only the CATALYST driver!!!!
Reboot! Enjoy !!! There will be no CATALYST(only the intel preference and settings where the CATALYST should've be) at the right mouse click but switchable graphic is now awailable LIKE THIS
Unfortunately you'll won't be available to choose between the INTEL and AMD ! AMD is now working by default
All the .exe will now recognize 6770m
AND METRO APPS WON"T WORK!!!!!!! AS internet explorer will crash as you'll open it
SECOND METHOD IF THE FIRST FAILS (WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE IF HANDS ARE STRAIGHT MORE OR LESS)
    FURTHER IS TESTED!
THIS METHOD EXCLUDE THE METRO APPS CRASH AND ALL THE REST INCOMPATIBILITIES WITH EVERY EXECUTABLE PROGRAMS AND GAMES!!!!
Note: Requires knowledge to sign your own drivers, disable signing enforcement at boot and modding some inf files.
I am not responsible for any damage that may arise. This guide is not exhaustive.
    Requirements:
.NET Framework 3.5 -- Can be enabled within Windows 8, in "Turn Windows features on or off"
Windows Driver Kit (WDK) -- Can be downloaded from here
Configure Windows Update to only "Download updates but let me choose wether to install them", and hide both Intel and AMD updates. This is to prevent our driver be updated by Windows.
1.Download the latest switchable graphics drivers from this site: leshcat blog IT Tips & Tricks: Catalyst 12.3 Pre-WHQL UnifL for Switchable Graphics
    2. Run the installer that will extract the contents of the file, by default it will ask you to disable "Signing enforcement of Windows", you will know that it is working after rebooting because a "Test Mode" watermark is added to the desktop, above "Windows 8 Consumer Preview".
    3. At this moment, do not run the AMD installer yet. We need to modify some files. By default, the driver will be extracted to "C:\Drivers\Catalyst 12.3 Pre-WHQL UnifL".
    4. Go to this directory, and open the following file "Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\C7133662.inf"
    Do the following changes:
    In the section [Version] add:
    Code:
    [Version]
    CatalogFile=C7133662.CAT
There is a section that has the listing of all the supported cards. Rename it from "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]" to "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.2]"
    It should look like this:
    Code:
    [Manufacturer]
    %ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.1, NTamd64.6.2
    [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.2]
    "%AMD68F2.1%" = ati2mtag_VancouverC_PXAI, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68F2
    "%AMD9519.1%" = ati2mtag_VancouverC_PXAI, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9519
    5. Follow this guide to Test-Sign a Driver Package. (This guide is generic)
    6. After the previous step, you should have a Catalog file and the inf file we modified previously.
    7. Now proceed to run the AMD installer in "Win 7" Compatibility Mode. It is most likely that the driver install will fail at this stage, but the rest of Catalyst software will be installed.
    8. Now install the driver using the "Have disk" method in device manager and your modified INF for both Intel and AMD cards.
9.If you did the test-signing process correctly, the installation will succeed for both cards.
    10. Reboot and enjoy your switchable graphics under Win 8.
I still have to figure out how to make brightness controls to work.
BTW sorry for any grammar mistake, I am not a native English speaker.
    Known issues:
    - Sometimes switching may not work, resulting in BSOD.
    - When AMD gpu is active, Intel driver context menu options are still available.
    Features:
AMD gpu can be turned off, so battery will last longer.

  • Switchable Graphics Mode in the BIOS is not listed(seen)

    Hi everyone!
    I've read that:
NOTE: If you do not see Switchable Graphics Mode in the BIOS or it cannot be selected, see the following section Updating the BIOS to enable Fixed Mode .
However,  I didn't see that switachable craphics mode is seen in my BIOS:

However, I really was told that I shouldn't update the BIOS unless I am having a problem with it.
Thus, I am afraid that if I had updated it, I would be encountring some problems not loading my machine well. However, I really want to know how to switch to external or internal adapter, thus I read here:

Hi flock16. To get the notebook to start in 'Intel Mode',see  "Fixed Mode" which lets you select your desired GPU. Take a look at this document for the various settings.

  • Switchable graphics AMD Radeon HD 6620G/AMD RADEON HD 7670M

I have notebook HP Pavilion dv6-6c05er with integrated in CPU graphics AMD Radeon HD 6620G. It also have AMD RADEON HD 7670M but i cannot switch between them. This is only possible with drivers that was made in 2011. Now 2014. And this is not an isolated case. There is solution for the similar problem with AMD/Intel graphics, but nothing for AMD/AMD...
This situation persists for the second year. How long will it last?

    Hello, @Maxim4ik163
I see that you have an issue with the switchable graphics running on your notebook. I will try to clarify this.
All information can be located in this document: Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Dual AMD GPUs
I will start with this " i cannot switch between them", if you're referring to switching manually you cannot do this. The graphics aren't meant for you to just switch them at will. The act of the switching is done automatically and only when the application and situation requires.
    What does that mean?
With your notebook, this means that the graphics being used will only switch from intergrated to dedicated if required. With this notebook, that won't actually happen often. This explains why:
This feature is working as intended. The intended behavior of the dual AMD GPU configuration will vary depending on the application:
DirectX 9 applications (such as Street Fighter IV) only use one graphics processor at a time, even though two graphics processors are available. When a discrete graphics processor is paired with an A4-series integrated graphics processor, then data is rendered by the discrete graphics processor. When a discrete graphics processor is paired with an A6/A8-series integrated graphics processor, then data is rendered by the integrated one because it performs better than the discrete in this scenario.
DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 applications use both graphics processors simultaneously to render data.
OpenGL applications use the integrated graphics processors only.
To add to that, your notebook runs on an A8 series CPU. This means that the only time you will ever use discrete is with DX10 and DX11. When that is happening the applications will only reflect the intergrated graphics.
Anything else is explained in the document.
Now as for the driver, unfortunately to my knowledge the only one that works for this setup is what's provided on the HP site. This as you say is out of date. When or if there will be an update (so that applications requesting you to update can run), I don't have that information.
If you still have questions about how this works or the drivers, I recommend contacting phone support.

  • W500: using the switchable graphics with vista ultimate without the power manager software?

seriously, invest in a new hitachi travelstar 320gb for 49 bucks from that tiger place online and a usb hard drive caddy, pop in your free clonezilla cd and your rescue and recovery problems will be over!
after reading all the problems with that software i figured my data was too valuble to get caught in that mess so for under 75 bucks problem solved and i rid my w500 of that bloatware. even cheaper then ordering the recovery disks from lenovo.
working on getting rid of the rest of the useless software now.
hey question, how do you use the switchable graphics on the w500 with vista ultimate without the power manager software? if you can thats next!!

That's because you are asking a T500/W500 question in the Thinkvantage forum. Anyway, the answer to your question is in this thread.
ATI recently started packaging their switchable graphics driver together with their regular Catalyst. So downloading their latest driver Catalyst 9.4 from the ATI/AMD site and then modifying it with the Mobility Modder will allow you to use switchable graphics without the power manager. The little problem is just that the released version of the Mobility Modder stopped working with Catalyst 9.2 and you are on your own getting a modified Modder  working on 9.4, see here.
So I decided not to make more work for myself staying on a modded Catalyst 9.1 and for the time being living without switchable graphics.

  • Power Manager 3.48 no longer has switchable graphics option

I ran Active Update yesterday and the Power Manager is now upgraded to version 3.48.  It appears that there is no longer an option to switch between high performance and energy saving graphics.  How is the graphics mode supposed to be switched now that this menu option has been removed from the right mouse button menu on the Power manager?  Do I need to downgrade to a previous version?
In case it matters, I'm running a W500 with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
    Thanks,
    Danny

    @ersiles,
I have the T400 with switchable, I just updated it to PM 3.64 and it does swtich. What I notice earlier when I wasn't able to switch the graphic was due to BIOS settings.
Check BIOS settings if you have it on switchable graphic mode and check if BIOS detect is enabled.
Once that is done, boot into Windows, uninstall all the video drivers, reboot. then install the drivers again.
Windows would try to install their version of the driver, click "Reboot later" when Windows prompt a reboot. Reboot only when ATi manager prompt the reboot.
I was having issue too on the T400 not being able to switch. It definitely helped me ..
    Let me know.

  • OpenGL3.3+ Update? Edit: Radeon HD6490M switchable graphics driver update Windows 7?

So I recently purchased a game that requires me to run OpenGL3.3 or more. Currently I can do OpenGL3.1, and after poking around some I see no reason why my graphics cards couldn't support it. Do I need to download something for OpenGL, or do my drivers need to be updated? (HP Support says they don't but I'm skeptical). Any help/advice is appreciated. Also, I was poking around this old question, but couldn't do squat with it... quite new at all this after all... Edit: I've been looking more, and it seems that the answer would be an updated graphics driver. The problem is, I'm not sure if there is one (Again, HP Support, etc. says I don't need one...). I have a dv6t-6100, with Radeon HD 6490M switchable graphics on Windows 7, 64-bit. It sounds like others have had luck updating their drivers just by the virtue of running on Windows 8 rather than 7. Any suggestions, work-arounds, other drivers that might similarly work for me?

So after updating to Windows 10, what I was trying to do originally works now that my video drivers have finally updated. Doesn't solve the original problem exactly, and I continue to wonder why HP kept me in the dark on these updates...

  • G50-45 Switchable Graphics

    Hello,
I have a question regarding switchable graphics in this laptop. Are these two cards runing simultainously so there isn't really any switch where you can decide which card do you want to use right now? I had laptop with this future before and it had a program running in the background where you choose if you want to use integrated graphics or dedicated one. I only have some AMD software where you can set which aplications should use high performance or energy efficient settings. When I fe. run some game, there isn't anything that would tell me that I'm using dedicated card. I installed AMD System Monitor which tells me APU resource distrbution is 100% from CPU although GPU does seem to do something.
Is this how my laptop should behave?
    I have Windows 8 32-bit.
Amd Radeon R5 230 and Radeon R4 driver no. 13.302.1601.1001

So to answer my own question. No, my dedicated graphics card isn't working. I just tried new LOTR game where it let you choose which graphics card you want to use, and it only shows the R4 card, not the dedicated M230 one. So, what should I do? I have clean install of Windows 8.1 64bit with newest drivers from Lenovo site.

  • HP Experts - dm3 Switchable graphics and a lack of bios functionality

I currently own a dm3-1155ea with a switchable integrated 3200 and discrete 4330. I chose to put fedora 14 on my laptop which, when using proprietary graphics drivers (which are pretty much required for anything resembling battery life) only allow you to use the integrated graphics. Wishing to use the 4330, I ventured into the bios only to find a distinct lack of... Well, anything useful.
I've talked to customer support and they've confirmed that the functionality to turn off the integrated graphics exists, but has been deliberately disabled... Why? I understand hiding voltages and stuff or perhaps implementing a hidden yet accessible advanced bios for more advanced users, but doesn't it seem a little excessive completely blocking access to useful features? Features that are presumably there to solve little problems like mine...
So yeah, my question is really why so stingy with the bios features? Also, if you have any alternative suggestions about the switchable graphics in linux issue, I'd welcome them
    Thanks
This thread covers a similar topic and contains additional details - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/HP-I-need-you-to-support-your-Hardware/td-p/369867

I also have a laptop with switchable graphics but Intel integrated and ATI 3400 discrete. I run Kubuntu Linux 10.10 and cannot get the ATI proprietary drivers to work properly. My laptop is a Lenovo and it gives BIOS support to set the graphics all integrated, all dedicated or switchable and you can also turn off OS support for switchable. The only way Linux works right for me is to turn off OS support for switchable. Then I can set it to either all integrated or all dedicated. Windows 7 64 bit can run either graphics system, but Linux only sees and works off the integrated graphics, even if the BIOS is set to dedicated! I have no complaint as I still have OpenGL support at least at  a minimal level (can run tuxracer).
