S5610f desktop power supply

My s5610f desktop pc just shut off while watching a video. Checked connections, changed cable, and moved to a different outlet.
pc will not come on, no sounds when pushing on button. BUT the internal led lights are on. (green). I cleaned inside case several months ago, PC wasn't very dirty and mostly confined to fan blades. The PC ran great all this time.
1. How can I check power supply to see if bad?
2. If Power supply is bad , what is the proper replacement or upgrade for pc?
3. Should I upgrade my video card since I will be changing power supply?
Note: since my PC is 6 yrs old and has run truely great these years, Is it cost effective to do the repairs? I upgraded Ram from 4 to 8 gig 1.5 yrs ago. fast enough for what I need. (not a Gamer)

Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the power supply unit (PSU). If the PSU has failed, here is a guide to help you replace it.
Here is a 300W PSU replacement for your computer. I don't know anything about the company, however. It would be good to check them out before buying from them.
I don't believe that you would see enough performance increase to upgrade the video card. There are only two, what looks like, PCI Express x1 slots on the motherboard; no PCI Express x16 slot. The more components, the more heat that is generated. A small case gets much hotter than a larger case. This is hard on components.

3000 Q desktop power supply replacement

Hi,
My parents' 7 year old 3000 Q series desktop is arbitrarily switching off. When they took the desktop to a local lenovo store (in Bangalore, India) the guy at the shop indicated that the smps/power supply was failing. He cleaned it up and managed to get the computer running but warned that it might fail again in the future. Of course the computer is so old and (with a non-standard cabinet size) that getting a replacement is not easy.
For a variety of reasons just buying my folks a new computer is not easiest solution here. Could anybody here let me know what the fru number for power supply might be and how difficult it would be to buy a replacement online ? Am I asking the impossible ?

Can i use an external power supply to power second graphics card?

hello. i currently have an ATI 5870 in my 2010 Mac Pro. I want to throw a Quadro 4000 in there as well, but i need one more 6-pin power cable. can i plop the quadro into the second PCI slot, buy a PC desktop power supply and just let it sit on the outside next to my Mac Pro, and then just run a 6-pin power cable from the power supply into the Quadro? i realize that the Mac Pro door would could not be placed back on...but i could figure out some way to cover up the opening so that dust doesn't enter.
would this work? anyone tried?

Just want to ask a question that is not clear on everything that I have read. If you don't switch off the external power what do you take the risk for? Could you burn something or the card will just continue to work (spin the fan) after you turn off the Mac Pro? Where is the dangerous part?

The moderator of this site seems to think that any external power supply can have the same problems as apple powerbook supply. "Not so", say I ! Most PC notebooks and yes, I do use them, have a fairly sturdy cord on both sides of the connection. Should one find oneself in a situation without a power supply for a pc notebook it is usually possible to get one from a local Radio Shack or international electrical store. Not so with apple powerbooks. the connections are specifically apple and although there ae a few generic replacement PSU they are not generally available only from mac speciality stores. Why apple decides to design what is obviously a flimsy (my electrical gaffer on my movie looked at it and just laughed)and possibly dangerous device is beyond me. It occurs to me that with all the innovative design apple has come up with in the past has gone to the designer's heads. Now we are faced with a 'magnetic' connector on the new powerbook pro line. Are you kidding apple ? Please just give us a simple, generic power supply and conmnector so that we travellers can rest in peace knowing we can replace the PSU anywhere in the world.
BTW my PSU was smoking and sparking when I awoke in my hotel room until it just gave up.

The most common issues people have with Apple's adapters that I've seen are (not that this applies to you, but perhaps one will refer to something you've done that you didn't realize could cause harm):
1. They pull by the cord and not the bulb.
2. They push in without looking.
3. They let the cord bend at the bulb or at the brick. Give it at least two inches of slack.
4. They don't remove the plastic wrapping that is clear from the brick when they first get it. This under the wrong conditions could create an overheating condition.
5. They rely on unreliable power sources. Some older houses have issues with giving reliable power to outlets. Using a backup battery surge protector like those from APC can help.
By the way, my father's Dell power adapter had to be replaced too. Non-Apple notebook power adapters are actually more flimsy than you give them credit for. Part of the problem is designing the transformer to be in such a compressed space that is lightweight too. Until people don't mind the extra weight of a full fledged desktop power supply inside a notebook, thus allowing standard power cables, or a room temperature superconductor is invented, this will be a persistent issue. Take good care of your cords, and don't let them bend so much that they fray.
I might add, I went to Radio Shack, and they had the parts for me to build a power adapter for my Powerbook. Unfortunately the transformer brick would have been 3 times as large and as heavy.

If you call around, you might be able to find an apple authorized repair shop in your area that can offer to put pull the hard dive out of the old computer and put it into an external hard drive.

It is unlikely that the power supply will fit/work in your HP Pavilion p6213w Desktop Computer. Please consider the Corsiar CX500, CX500M, CX600, and CX600M for your power supply needs. These power supplies are the same physical size as the factory unit and are known to fit and work in most HP full-sized consumer desktop computers.
There is a chance that the GTX 760 and other current generation video cards may not work in your computer. These newer cards typically require the computer to support the most current UEFI standards and many motherboards don't meet this criteria. Please know the return policy on any video card you purchase, in case it doesn't work. If the GTX 760 doesn't work, consider the GTX 650/660 Ti or equivalent AMD graphics card for your graphics card needs.

Hp p6000 desktop not starting power supply...?

I have a solid green light on the power supply but the fan does not come on. (nothing but the green light comes on) The start up button flickers briefly when pressed but only after being unplugged and only once until it is unplugged again. I have gone though the hp trouble shooting page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you did not define the model number (just a reference to the HP p6000 series) I had to guess it was the stock 300W used in several of the models.
It the green light is 'on' with applied voltage, but goes out when the computers power switch is depressed, that usually means the power supply has failed. Open the case, and repeat the sequence, noting the PSU light, motherboard LED, and watch the CPU fan. Now, press the computer power switch. Did the CPU fan turn briefly? If the CPU fan quit, and the motherboard LED is now off, I again would suspect the PSU.

i realize that my speaker system is old and no longer in production i suppose. but my power supply has gone out and i need a new one.its s 3.5v and puts out 2.5 amps.
i tried to contact through email but it asks me to select my speaker system from a list and its not there. i've gone to radio shack and they told me i need to contact the manufacturer and get one from them because its a special power supply i suppose. is there anyone that has any knowledge or help you can give me. please dont tell me that i have to throw the whole system away. thank you for your time.

You will have to contact Customer Support and see if they still have those available but as this is quite an old model speaker, chances isn't too high. You can still contact them and check it out though.

Is it possible to have HP upgrade the power supply when purchasing a desktop? Base:300W Desired:400W

It isn't in the configuration options to upgrade the power supply. I am considering strongly an HPE500z with an upgrade to 1GB graphics card (from 512MB) and perhaps an upgrade to the processor. I do not know if 300 W should be able to handle the upgrades (it probably will be fine), but with potential future upgrades I see no reason to not go a little bigger on the power supply.
Can anyone help?

I had an Intel-iMac fried by lightening. UPS, surge protectors but it happened as I was reaching to unplug. Cold now. Could it just be the power supply? Can I replace that myself?

This is the full question since I couldn't get it all in the box.
I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod.
I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica. Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house. I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip. There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.
When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.
First questions: Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts? Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply? Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician? My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.
Next question: Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service? How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.
Those are my iMac questions, now the questions about backup restoration.
If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder. I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook. My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed. I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that. Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?

Quite possible, but working on iMacs is not easy, & PSU might be prohibitive.
Hopefully the Drive might have info on it, but even pulling that out can be a chore.

I'd get an external drive & restore the whole works to it, then boot from the External drive.

i saw a similar post over 4 years ago, however it doesn't address my issue.
my pc started stalling when i attempt to turn it on. It wouldn't come on. Then after several tries every now and then it would come on. I was told through searching that it could be the video graphic card or the power supply. Therefore once i had the computer back on. I never shut it off. However, i could reboot and it would come on.
Now it won't come on again. So i don't know what to replace. The video graphic card or the power supply. If it is the graphic card, do i replace the one previously installed or add a new one. And if adding a new one, what is recommended to be compatible with my 300 watt supply unit? I'm lost as what route to take and how.Below are the details of my unit.
HP/Compaq Presario SR2180NX desktop PC with a P5LP-LE motherboard with an Integrated graphics using Intel GMA 950.

Is there an add-in video card in the slot? If so, remove it and try to turn on. If the problem is the video card it will turn on. If not it is the power supply.

Power Supply??? Anyone have this problem?

I have a few different things I am going to post but at the end they all go together so if you are bored read on.
I own an '07 Mac Pro 3GHz 8-Core and one day I started it up and it didn't come one. It had power but no video. I restarted it maybe 6 or so times for it to finally come on.
2 months later I start it up(yes I used it between this time) and it gets to the desktop and shuts off. I then try to start it and nada. So the next morning I try again and it chimes, gets to the gray apple screen and shuts off and has not started since.
I took it to an Apple repair shop(not Apple store but certified) and they are scratching their heads because this is usually a sure logic Board issue or Processor.
I myself had taken the time to fool with the diagnostic buttons and yes the Trickle Amber lights comes on but when I let go of he diagnostic button on the CPU1 & CPU2 Overtemp lights flashed.
So with no way to know what this means I just took a mental note about what lights did what and when.
PART 2
I had been searching the webtubes anywhere and everywhere for Apple Service Manuals but to no end. They seemingly don't exist.
Well not so fast. Not only did I find the Mac Pro Service Manual for my '07 I found the '08 and others all for free.
So with the info I thought for sure I could figure out the problems with my computer but the repair shop still had it. Turns out the repair shop was so used to the Logic/Processor thing they hadn't actually really diagnosed the LED's properly as I assisted them in doing once I read the manual.
As I read the LED meanings it became quite clear to me what the problem is but yet I couldn't understand how.
To me the Amber Trickle LED meant that the power supply was ok but this isn't the case. There is an LED I think number 6 or 7 that when the front button is pressed turns green to show the Power Supply is up to par.
Just from keeping notes in my head I remember studying the LEDs and never did a green light show ever.
Armed with this I went to the shop today where the tech downloaded the Service Manual while I was there and we went over it together at which point I said to him that there was no Green Light.
So while he boringly read through the LED explanations I stared at his certifications and his cool little collection of Sponge Bob items which I love by the way. After a boring repeat of yada yada yada we make the anticipated trip over the the hog on the counter.
Just like I thought... no green light.
Now I can't believe all this hoopla over that. Something so simple was overlooked for a week.
I look at it like this. People tell me now, oh yeah it makes sense that it would be that now that it is saying that from the diagnosis LEDs but not one person even suggested that prior.
And I went and purchased a new 2.26GHz 8-core because I couldn't wait any longer for it to be fixed and thinking it was gonna be $700-$2000.
Any thoughts???

It is very simple trust me.
I guess when the plug is in it still gets power(trickle power) enough to do little things and/or diagnose but the main power to boot up and run can still not work.
My guess is that it is made this way so they can still diagnose problems even when a power supply bites the dust so you know it is bad as well.
About the Overtemp lights here is the deal.
If you look at an '07 Mac Pro(can't speak for newer) behind the riser cards there is a row of LED's and words to explain why they are on, blink or whatever they do.
Things like TRICKLE POWER, CPU1 & CPU2 FAIL, CPU1 & CPU2 OVERTEMP, and others.
Just like the SMC button there are two other buttons on the Logic Board near these LEDs'
If you press them they diagnose the computers issues and make the lights come on depending on the issue.
BUT...
There are some of the LEDs that come on to show you power without having to press the diagnosis button. For example the LED #6 or #7(not sure) come on when the power is on, and in this case they don't, showing the Power Supply is not putting out the power. Even if it does and the power isn't sufficient this light will not turn on.
So...
When you hit the power button only the Fan and Drives spin due to the Trickle Power(from what I have read) but the Logic Board is not getting power from the Power Supply to start up as shown by the GREEN LED not lighting up to indicate the Power Supply is working.
That is a pretty good explanation as good as it can be.
I can post a photo tomorrow when I get my new computer up and running to show you the Board and you will be like Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh that is simple.
As far as the fix. yes I would have just got a Power Supply but it was not know at the time. I basically figured it out myself.
I have no regrets about buying the new machine. I have clients that need their stuff done and I love to do it, plus now this will become my Maya machine until it is needed for backup or something.
NOTE: Who wouldn't still be excited to get the latest and greatest.

IMac G5 20" power supply problem

The power supply on my 20" G5 recently fried. Somehow I had the activity monitor showing that the "FaxJobMgr" was using about 70% of my cpu. I had had that problem before and the computer was very warm. I quit that process but shortly after that there was an acrid smell that I ultimately found was coming from the power supply. When I re-started everything came up to the desktop but then it shut down just as if the plug were pulled. I see that there were many issues with the power supply on this first generation G5. I took it to the Apple Store and they say it is the power supply AND there appears to also be damage to the logic board. $734. I'm wondering if maybe its only the power supply and they are just being cautious that there might be damage to the logic board so just replace it or buy a new computer. I thought I might try to replace the power supply only, but then that seems to be about a $120 that might be gone. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Generally speaking, the defects which affect a logic board and power supply in that family of products are similar, but there typically exists no causal link between them. It is possible to have a logic board affected by the defective electrolytic capacitor issue, a defective power supply, or both.
You can readily determine if the logic board is defective by examining the clusters of capacitors on the logic board for bloating, distended tops or leakage. If they exhibit such symptoms, your logic board can be repaired for $ 189.00 by contacting this company.
You may also need to replace the power supply, thought that determination is best made once the logic board as been verified as good or bad, and replaced, if you elect to do so. Power supplies for this product family generally cost roughly $ 139.00, and are user replaceable. Replacing the supply in a unit which exhibits the defective capacitor issue will not correct the logic board related problem, and may—under relatively rare circumstances—cause the eventual failure of the replacement supply.

How to retrieve data from iMac g5-no power supply

I have a iMac g5 that the power supply is shot. The computer no longer goes on. The software is OS X (tiger) 10.4. I took my computer to apple and because if the age of the computer they are not able to fix it. However I do have a lot of pictures and my graphic stuff, as well as music. U
Is there a way to pull the data using perhaps an external hard drive or a pc? If so how can it be done.
It would mean a lot to me. Please help

call OWC to find out what type of encloser you need. will need both your new computer & old hd in hand. ( actually, owc may be able to tell you what encloser you need before you get the old hd in hand. Call. )
$ get some use on your credit card.
plug old drive into new enclosure ( call owc for help if needed. )
plug new encloser into new computer.
hd icon will appear on desktop. double click on hd icon to begin.
& you can now backup you new computer hd to old drive. Best to buy new drive & backup to new drive in encloser
