S60 v3 applications on S60 v3 handsets

Why don't all applications developed for the S60 v3 platform work on all S60 v3 handsets?
I understand the hardware related differences like accelerator and touch screen, but what differences are there otherwise?
mgoksoy

Many thanks for the info Grschinon.
I wish software developers would classify their applications according to all these variables. One keeps loading applications to find out whether they will work on their devices or not. And all these installs and uninstalls mess up the registry of the device causing unnecessary problems.
For example www.mobile24.com shows the percentage that a specific software might run on a specific model.

  • "Track and Protect" is not applicable for W350i handset?

    Dear Sir / Madam,
Kindly reply why software "Track and Protect" is not applicable for W350i handset?  I had tried to download in my hand set by using link "http://wap.sonyericsson.com/fun/ ", but I did not find the application in list. If I can down load it, please send me how I can get the application. If this application is not supporting handset W350i then please make it compatible to W350i handset. In fact it should be supported by all handset.
    Regards

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for contacting the Track and Protect team and referring to this topic.
Unfortunely, Track and Protect is not available for non-Android or Symbian OS powered Sony Ericsson handsets. We had many requests for this, and it is  something that we would really like to do for you, but we're bound to current technical limitations of these phones. But we promise to keep investigating them, who knows, one day...
Best regards and thanks for contacting us.

Track and Protect is a remote management tool and security application that allows users to monitor, lock and wipe data from a lost or stolen cell phone. In addition to being able to secure content on the device through remote commands sent via the TnP web service, users are able to track the location of the missing phone in real time through the TnP online mapping system and take
photographs from the device of its present surroundings, with the ability to listen in and capture images of the phone’s current possessor. TnP allows users to collect enough information -- including current location, new phone number, operator ID and facial photographs -- to generate a substantive police report. All features are operable even after illegal SIM change.

  • Install J2ME Jars on Motorola Handsets

    Hi,
I want to install a Jar into mu Motorola l6 handset .
I have downloaded Motorola iDEN Java Application Loader Lite (JAL Lite) for it .Now when i am installing it .Its not gettinginstalled on to the Machine and i am not able to install my JAR onto the handset.
Can anyone tell me how can we install any Application onto the Motorola Handsets.
Is there any tool other tha (JAL) through which we can install java applications on to the handsets.

Hi, I've done quite a bit of research on this now and it appears that there are no standard certificates at all... not even Verisign and Thawte. This is ridiculous! The best you can do is get a UTI certificate from the Java Verified Program, at about $400 per device per test and hope that the operator hasn't crippled the device and made you also need a co-signature from them... likewise for the handset manufacturer. This has really been the biggest cockup in J2ME as far as I am concerned, making it effectively unfeasible for anybody to write advanced J2ME apps that make use of restricted APIs. I've blogged about this http://javablog.co.uk/2007/08/09/how-midlet-signing-is-killing-j2me/

  • BlackBerry : How to OTA Install my RIM signed .cod file on the handset ?

    Blackberry :
I am using phone book access in my project.
I created the .cod file using rapc and signed it online using signatureTool and RIM provided key.
I am able to install this RIM signed .cod file of my project to the handset BlackBerry 7100G using usb cable and .alx file
with Desktop Manager. It works perfect.
I have already set the mime type for .cod on my server. And put the signed .cod, .jar and .jad files. With my wap page having
    link to the jad file.
When I open this wap page from my Black Berry 7100G Browser and clik on the link, I see the details of my application. Then I
press download, it starts the download but then gives error in JAD.
For the project version without PIM, where no signature is required I am able to download it OTA on the handset using the
    .jad & .jar file only.
Issues that I feel are creating this problem.(I am using JDE 4.0.2)
    1) RAPC.exe added RIM specific attributes to jad file that shows project.cod & project-1.cod with different byte sizes and
    different SHA-1 codes.
But in the bin directory, after runing rapc over the jad & jar file I get only project.cod with size almost same as the
sum of project.cod & project-1.cod and project-1.cod is not found.
    2) RAPC adds the SHA-1 code & byte size to jad file. But when I use SigntureTool to sign the .cod file its size is changed
but the jad file is not updated by it.
    Thank you,
    Amitabh

Since my last post I have been discussing this issue with commercial application developers and have been experimenting with various applications.
Firstly, let's make the JAR/JAD situation absolutely clear. Some, but not all, applications unquestionably require the JAD file as a part of the installation process. If the application is a "signed" application then the security authorisation is contained within the JAD file, not the JAR file. The JAD file is created from the JAR file and contains security verification information that is separate from the JAR file and which enables the application to signed as kosher.
The Nokia PC Suite Application Installer does not need to show you the JAD file. The JAR file is sufficient. If you install the application from a folder on your PC that contains both the matching JAR and JAD files then Application Installer will correctly install the application from both the JAR and JAD files. If the folder ONLY contains the JAR file then it will only install from the JAR file. I have proved this.
So, if you cannot get the application to work then the reason is not the installation process. The reason is far more likely to be that you are trying to install the application on a branded handset rather than on a standard Nokia handset. Some service providers heavily modify the base standard software that Nokia installs on its vanilla handsets and these modifications may well include changes to security authorisation rules that will prevent many applications working on handsets that they sell.
I am in dispute with one such as we speak. I will not name them right now but if I am unable to achieve a satisfactory outcome then be assured I will let EVERYONE know. Thank God for YouTube.

  • Nokia Care- N95 Support

I am having lots of problems with my N95. The handset keeps on shutting down or freezing without applications running. The handset is very unreliable and I feel I must reinstall my primary SIM into my trusty N80. For example if I try to accesss my voice mailbox by pressing and holding button 1 , the phone shuts down! I am constantly restarting the phone, sometimes having removed the battery for a few seconds. If i recieve a SMS, this often causes a problem.
I bought my N95 SIM free and am running software version 12 with a 2Gb memory card. I have had several S60 phones, so I am well aware of their limitations, but this is the worst one.
I have tried to contact Nokia Care on 0845 0455555. They keep you hanging on for ages, trying to speak to an Engineer ,only to be re-directed, before being cut off. They even promised to call me back, but they only said that to get rid of me!
So I tried to contact Nokia Care by e-mail. I got a standard computer generated reply, and it was obvious nobody ever bothered to read my e-mail!
All I want is to speak to someone about my problems to double check I am not doing anything wrong before I return the handset. Does anyone know who and how it is possible to speak with a qualified Nokia technician?
    Adrian Smith

First you could download some new software onto the phone, the new software is very reliable.

If that doesn't work the techinition you want is to go to a Nokia Service Centre.

  • How do I install a JAD & associated JAR file on a ...

    Hi all,
I have a Nokia 6288 which I would like to install a signed application in the form of a signed JAD and accompanying JAR file.
I need the JAD because it is a signed application, and I need the phone to recognise this because the application accesses user data from the memory card.
    I have tried:
    1. Using PC Suite. It does not recognise JAD files.
    2. Copying the signed JAD & the JAR file onto my memory card. The phone does not recognise JAD files. I can use the JAR file fine but it isn't fully functional.
    3. Installing the JAD file from a WAP service by pointing my phones web browser directly to the JAD file online. It downloads and installs, but again, fails to be fully functional.
So at the moment I am stuck as although I can install the JAR by itself, the application is then not signed, and will not work because it cannot access the memory card.
Basically, how would I install a signed application (JAD & JAR) onto my Series 40 handset?

Since my last post I have been discussing this issue with commercial application developers and have been experimenting with various applications.
Firstly, let's make the JAR/JAD situation absolutely clear. Some, but not all, applications unquestionably require the JAD file as a part of the installation process. • Can't reload Bing app after wiping and reloading lastest AT&T OS 5

    Howdy all,
Please forgive me if this has already been addressed and I just haven't found it yet.
I was having all sorts of oddities with my BlackBerry Curve 8900 (AT&T carrier), so I backed up my data, wiped, and reloaded the latest OS from AT&T (5.0.0.1067).  Before wiping my device, I had both the Bing search and Bing map apps on my device.  I don't recall when I loaded them, but I'm sure I was running an iteration of OS 5, and not 4.x with an upgrade.
Anyways, after wiping and reloading the OS, I can't load the Bing app to my Berry.  When I go to their website, and follow the mobile link, whether I type the provided URL in (http://m.bing.download), or I have their site send me a text message with a link to download (http:/m.bing.com/?mid=40012), I get the same message, as follows:
"We were unable to detect your phone type or we do not offer support in your region.  To try Bing anyway, click here."
I don't recall how, but somewhere in my interwebs searching, I found a link that took me right to the Bing app's location in AppWorld.  I followed this, but it also told me that the app was unavailable for the device.
According to Microsoft's website, it is available for my model.  Of course, since I was actually using it on my Berry prior to wiping and reloading the OS, I'm not sure why it's unavailable now.  Is it possible that the Berry is being misidentified?  I was running 5.0.0.1067 prior to wiping and reloading, so it shouldn't be an OS version.  My Vendor ID shows as "2," so it should be seen with AT&T as my carrier (and, by default, in the US).
It's not a big deal, but I prefer Bing maps and search, and can't figure out why I can't reload it.  I've already contacted Bing support at Microsoft, and they just provided me the same links, and told me to go ask BlackBerry support.  And please, don't respond with, "Just use Google."   I have and can use Google, but that's not why I'm posting.  It may be that I'm just out of luck, and won't be able to use Bing, but I figured I should ping out to the community first in case some of y'all had any ideas.
Thanks in advance, and I appreciate any help y'all can give!
    Jeff

I had exactly the same problem and was most disappointed at not being able to reinstall the Bing search application and Maps. I'm guessing you have found a solution by now but just in case and for the benefit of anyone else in this position I have a possible solution.
It took a lot of searching but eventually I found a page which offered a download of the early (1st) release of the Bing application for various BlackBerry handsets not including mine. I did however manage to select and successfully download a version for a different device which installed ok. Upon opening the Bing app I immediatley received a pop up message informing me that there was a newer version of the application available, would I like to update ? I selected yes to update and hey presto, I once again had the latest and correct version of Bing search and Maps on my device.
    Here is the link http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/Bing-BlackBerry-Download-89065.html
Any problem with the link then you are searching for "Bing (BlackBerry) 1.0: Free Download on the Softpedia Handheld site". Once there you will see a list of devices and download locations in the bottom right hand corner. Good luck and enjoy this great app. Hope RIM add it to Appworld on both sides of the Atlantic soon. Very useful and works perfectly on my Torch 9800.

  • 5800 XM "Expired Certificate" error message

For people who own a Nokia 5800 XM, the error message of "Expired Certificate" when downloading applications onto the device will be mean you cannot load on new apps, which can be frustrating.
Firstly you should try to update the firmware on your phone by 1 of 3 ways.
Using FOTA (Firmware Over The Air). Another thread of mine will explain this in detail. You can find it here.
Downloading Nokia Software Updater(NSU) and connecting your 5800 to the computer using a data cable.
Taking the handset to a Nokia Care point if you do not want to try the above 2 options.
**NOTE: Always be sure to make a back up of your personal details that are held on the phone as updating firmware will most likely delete any data left on the phone.
If you have used FOTA or NSU to update your firmware, or there is no new update available then doing the following will work and will allow you to install new applications without the expired certificate error message.
With the phone switched on, press the power button key once.
Scroll down to and select "Remove E: Memory Card".
Select Yes to remove the memory card.
Press OK and remove memory card from phone.
Press the Dialler on the main screen.
    Type *#7370#
Enter security code. Default is 12345 unless it has been changed.
The phone will reset, wait for this to complete and power back on.
Select your country and type in the correct time and date.
Wait for the phone to complete its configurations, you may receive "My Nokia" or tutorial messages.
    Power off phone.
    Insert the memory card.
    Power on the phone.
Wait for the phone to install any pre-loaded content from the memory card
Phone is ready to install applications, without "Expired Certificate" error message.
I have done the above myself and downloaded the PDF reader from the "Download" application from within the handset and it installed with no error after these steps.
    I hope this helps.

  • Problem in siemens m65 emulator

I use sprites to animate my midlet. When i try to render my sprite with
    sprite.paint(g);
i see that it is painting higher in18 pixels. there is a strip in upper part of the screen with the same width. And it covers my image, but graphics primitives paints correctly. so, when i try to synchronise primitives and layers on the same screen, i see wrong. The wtk emulator works fun.

i m adding two command buttons{color:#000080}No. You are adding two Commands.
As per the documentation for {color}javax.microedition.lcdui.Command{color:#000080} the implementation should choose the short label for the second construct you have tried. However, Motorola handsets are notoriously buggy. Perhaps you could test your application on some other handsets to boost your confidence that you have not made any mistakes, always provided that the app does not use any device-specific features.
    If you like, you can submit a bug report to Motodev citing the documentation:{color}
The implementation chooses one of the labels to be presented in the user interface based on the context and the amount of space available.
{color:#000080}Don't keep your hopes up, though -- I have a bug report pending for more than two months and they have stopped responding to my follow-ups.

  • LAN iSync?

Hey,sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there anyway to sync iCal, Address Book, and other info across a LAN? We have four macs on an airport LAN, and I'd love to have the same info on all of them, without having to backup and copy over data.
    Thanks.

iSync itself does not support the synchronization of data over a local, metropolitan or wide area network, except to the extent that it supports the synchronization of data between iCal, the Address Book and your synchronization framework. And, in that role, it supports the synchronization of data only between these applications and a mobile handset, or supported Palm handheld organizer or smartphone.
To synchronize two or more Macintosh platforms using .Mac synchronization data types, you must either use .Mac Sync, or a third party solutions such as SyncTogether from Mark/Space. You can also take the approach of using plugins for such services as Plaxo—which supports contacts, events and tasks—or, hooks to Google calendars using SpanningSync or by sharing calendars alone to synchronize events and tasks by using an application such as BusySync.

  • Symbian S60: Make some applications memory residen...

Now I know this is a simple question but I figure most people are pretty switched on in this forum so should be able to help me quite easily.
I have a Nokia 5500 sport with symbian S60 I believe running on it. Now the OS is horribly slow at loading the alarm clock and contacts, takes 6 seconds for the alarm and maybe 2-3 for the contacts.
If I open the alarms, then the main menu and click alarms again, it loads instantly. I imagine this is because I never pressed exit and it was still resident in memory. Now I do not run many apps, basically just the essential stuff like SMS, contacts, alarms and contacts, I imagine all of these apps would fit in memory at once quite easily, is there an option to force apps to stay resident? Or perhaps instead of having 'exit' change the button to be 'home' so that they stay running in the background?
I'm sure what I want to do is possible, I am just not sure how to do.
    Thanks in advance.

    There is no red button?
Also RAM is there to be used, I don't really see how it would slow the phone down providing there is enough RAM available to load all future apps.
When I manually add up contacts, sms etc it is well under the total available ram.
What does the red button normally do? Perhaps I can do it manually another way?
