Sad face included in alternating images??
My ipod alternates between The sad face with !, the batery image with 1 bar of charge shown, and the apple. This is all when it is connected to my computer and. I have tried resetting but it dosen't fix. While using the wall adaptor it just shows the sad face but no sign of battery. Any anwers. Is this a sign i need a new battery. thanks for your help

Need Help.... Try to restart and get an ipod with a sad face in it...
Ok I was shutting down my ipod on night and the ipod stuck on a song... So I preceded to restart the ipod!
When I restarted the ipod I got a picture of a ipod with a sad face and text saying "www.apple/support/ipod" after that the screen goes dark and has a battery symbol with a lightning bolt at the end of it...
I have tried everything...

5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod

I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

Sad Face on my Ipod. is it battery related?
I have an ipod 20Gb 4th gen/. Earlier today, it seems to have been a battery problem, i kept charging but the battery comes with one bar red, then a folder with exclamation pt. I was able to go to disk mode.
Now all of a sudden , i get a Sad face and nothing responds, Menu+select or Select+Play doesn't seems to respond.
I am thinking of buying a new battery and install it. can it be it?

Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

i have a 40 gig 4th generation click wheel. it was working fine until the other night when the song stopped playing in the middle and froze. i restarted it with menu and select and the apple icon came up. but right after that, the sad face icon appears and it goes back to the apple icon in a never ending circulation. my computer wont read it meaning i tunes doesnt either. i can put it in disk mode and then it sounds like it's connected...but isnt. i can not reboot it because of some error and i've tried every method i've read. including the tapping of the right top corner.

Okay so i'm having real problems with my 40gb ipod. It's been working perfectly well for over a year... i tried turning it on this morning and it's come up with the sad icon error message. It won't let me reset it, just comes up with the apple logo and then goes again. I plugged it in to the dock just to make sure that the battery wasn't completly dead as well and then it went from apple logo, to sad icon and then to a battery with an exclammation mark in it.

The other night my Ipod just froze. It was working fine, but then the buttons stopped working. Eventually it would work, but then it wouldn't play any songs. It would go from 0:00 of one song, then skip to 0:00 of the next one. Then it stopped working altogether, and froze on the main screen. This morning whenever i try to turn it on the apple shows up, the the sad face with the ! beside it. I tried resetting it about 10 times, and disk mode another 10 times. When i plug it into my computer the battery charge sign shows up, but its frozen and doesn't move. I cannot find any suggestions on what to do, should I just send it into maintenance? I only have a few days left on my 1 year warrenty.

so i have a mini and it wont do anything but show me a sad little ipod. it wont even show up on the computer. when i plug it in it just shows that big battery but it doesn't ever move like its charging. i've looked at all the stuff that says how to fix it and nothing will work. i tried to restore it an it says that it cant. and when i try to reset it all it does is show the apple and then go back to being sad. i dont know what to do!

I tried almost everything...menu/select, rew/select and even tried to locate "reset" button on hdd (doesn't seem to have one). Can someone please help me?

For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.
