  • Sad face ipod icon for no reason

I was using my ipod to listen to music, then when the song ended my ipod automatically turned off, completely normal, but when i tried to turn it back on, it booted up but then it showed the sad face ipod icon with the exclamation point, and wont respond to anything except the select/menu reset combo, but even when it reboots it gives the same message, and will just turn off again after a couple seconds, with the screen fading as if the battery had died, and sometimes it quickly flashes the no battery icon. But it was fully charged in the morning, so there's no way for the battery to be dead. I tried plugging it into my pc but itunes wont recognize it and wen the ipod turns on it shows that same sad ipod icon screen, but wen it turns off instead uf turning off it goes to a screen that says, please wait, very low battery, has a no battery icon overtop, and underneath there is a little loading circle, when in this state it only responds to the menu/select reset and after a while it will restart the sad ipod screen cycle. The ipod is old and has been bashed around a lot but i haven't had any problems in the past with it, except after the newest ipod software update it refused to play videos, instead just playing them as if they were music files, but i don't think this is related.

There is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon or the folder and ! icon.

There's only so much abuse an iPod will take before it eventually gives up.

  • Please help, Sad Face iPod

    Hey guys.
Today when i was gonna tie my shoes my ipod fell out of my pocket.
It wasnt a very long fall, and not a very hard surface.
When i some 15 minutes after tried to use it, it was frozen, so i tried to restart. I did, but then it didnt start, just showing a sad face-ipod.
What to do now? Ive tried most stuff on the internet, but nothing seems to do it. Has anyone of u had this problem?
    Please help!
    Best regards, Axel.

The sad face icon usually means that you have a hardware problem, probably damage caused by the fall, however, have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help:iPod displays a sad iPod icon
You can also check out this extensive user post, however read it carefully if you get to the Last Resort section you may not want to go this far: Mitch's Sad iPod and Exclamation mark post

  • HT1363 My ipod touch 32GB keeps clicking and won't turn on or charge even though power is getting to it.  The screen shows a sad face ipod.

We have an ipod classic with wheel.  It keeps saying low battery even though I have had it charging for ages.  It also makes this clicking sound but refuses to do anything else.  I can't get any screen to show except a sad face ipod and the "low battery" screen.  I have tried to do the restart option but it makes no difference.  Help!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. If defective, within warranty and not abused Apple will exchange it at no cost

  • How do you fix Sad face Ipod with exclamation mark

So i've been having a few problems here with my ipod hopeing that someone out there could help me out. So now my Ipod wont charge, it wont hook up to my computer and whenver i hook it up to the charger or the computer the sad face ipod comes on with the address www.apple.com/support/ipod anyways i also get this sign on the screen which is the charging sign but the bar isnt moving, its like its in the charge mode but nothings charging.. then after about 5 minutes it goes back to the apple logo and then tries to restart itself. When its turning on it also makes this clicking sound its like the hard disk is turning on and then turning off... SO basically i cannot get my ipod to turn on ... i cannot get it to charge, and i cannot get it to come up on my computer.. any suggestions?

Last week, I managed to fix up my daughter's iPod with the same problem. However, you need to have a PC to help you. First, put your iPod into Disk Mode (you may need to plug it with the AC Charger), press "Select"+"play" keys, then plug it with a PC, a window pop up and indicates that your iPod cant be read. Open the iPod Updater (make sure you pre-install the latest iPod updater before you connect your iPod with the PC) and click Restore. Once it has been completed, plug it back with your Mac, and do the Restore in Mac version

  • Sad faced iPod icon on my iPod. Wont respond

This morning, my mom left my iPod out in the cold >:(
When I tried to use it, I can hear it trying to start up but then a ticking sound comes on. Sort of like a clock. tic toc tic toc
And then an icon appears on the screen of an iPod with a sad face and under it there is the url for iPod support.
When I plug the iPod into my computer, it'll show the battery charge as a quarter full but it wont move from there. And it wont connect into iTunes.
I've tried resetting but that doesn't get me anywhere.
Does anybody know what could be the problem and what to do?

If it was just sitting in the cold, not moving, then this suggestion should work:
Take the iPod, and hold it so that you see the screen and click wheel. Then, not very hard but with some "umph", hit the ride side of the iPod a few times. The idea behind this trick is that the arm and head inside the hard drive are unaligned, causing the iPod to not be able to read from the hard drive disc properly, thus not being able to load the iPod firmware, thus not being able to boot (and you getting the sad face icon).
Try this a few times, and if it didn't help, try the tips in Mitch's Comprehensive Guide to Sad Face/Folder Icons

  • Sad face/folder icon

Alright all of a sudden the other day my ipod stoppe working. After a couple of hours and trying to reset it many times it finally showed the Apple icon, but now right after it shows that it goes to the folder or the sad face. I tried redownloading ll the software, and I'm unable to put it into dick mode. When I plug it in to charge, SOMETIMES the battery icon shows up, but it doesn't move...please help!

"I tried redownloading ll the software, and I'm unable to put it into dick mode."
Please tell me that was a typo.
My mom's iPod similar things when the battery is drained until it is completely empty, then left to sit without juice. Try resetting it, then immediately plugging it into your computer when it boots up. It'll probably freeze, because that's what hers does. Just unplug it again, reset it, then plug it in again as soon as it boots up. Hopefully, it'll get its act together and charge.
    Good luck!

  • Data retrieval from sad face ipod

So, two nights ago my ipod (40gig 3rd gen(? 4th? 1.5 years old; warranty expired)) randomly died while in the middle of playing music. It whirred and clicked and eventually gave me the unhappy face, and that is how it's stayed for the past 48 hours. Now, there are plenty of people in this same boat, as a little browsing of the forums has showed me, so I'm not asking for how to possibly fix it, but...
What I do want to know: is there a service to get the data off the ipod? Reformatting the machine is all fine and good, but I'm living abroad and most of my CDs are currently on the other side of the world. My friend said that you could pay $50 for Apple to retrieve the data from your old drive, but I haven't seen anything like that on the website (perhaps it is only for Macs?)
Anyway, has anyone heard of a data retrieval service for ipods, or some other method of getting data off an ipod that won't connect to the computer? (I tried putting it in data mode and it just laughed at me...or frowned, I suppose.)
Thanks for any advice you can give...
      Windows XP

Is your iPod fully charged? (connect it to the Mac for 4 hours to charge the battery)
Your post is not very clear on the problem, but normally Resetting the iPod will get rid of the sad face, on the iPod sceen, but may not get rid of your unhappy face.
To Reset - Press Menu and Center Button for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON.
Here is the support document that may help you.

  • Sad Face iPod...I have done everything Apple has told me to

I have done everything according to that document, and it doesn't work. My iPod will not go to disk mode. Also, whenever I try to reset it, it shows the charging icon, but it is frozen. I am really upset because this iPod is not even 10 months old. So I have two questions:
1.) How can I fix this?
2.)If it is not fixable, will Apple give me a new iPod? (and by new, I mean one with color and video)

If this doens't work.....then you must take your iPod back to the apple store and let them see it. Hopefully you are under warranty !!
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop, an exclamation point or sad iPod icon appears onscreen
You may need to restore your iPod if it does not appear in the Source list in iTunes or on your computer's desktop, or if an exclamation point and folder icon, or sad or "unhappy" iPod icon appears on the screen.
    You might see these symptoms:
iPod does not appear in the Source list in iTunes.
iPod does not appear on the desktop, in a Finder window, or in My Computer in Windows.
A sad or unhappy iPod icon appears on the screen.
An exclamation point and folder icon appears on the screen.
    Troubleshooting Steps:
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for your model iPod. Connecting your iPod to a PC that has older iPod software on it can cause this symptom.
Macintosh users who do not have Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later can use the iPod Dock Connector to FireWire cable to connect to a FireWire compatible iPod to a FireWire-equipped Mac. With Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later, you can use the iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable to connect a supported iPod to a high-powered USB 2.0 port.
Put your iPod into disk mode and connect it to your computer.
If you can see iPod on the desktop, in My Computer, or in iTunes, you're ready to restore it. You should attempt to restore the iPod even if it won't go into disk mode.
Warning: Restoring iPod erases and reformats the hard disk. All music and other data on iPod will be erased. Make a backup of any files or music on iPod before restoring it.
If you can't put your iPod into disk mode, reset it, then read the related documents to see if they might solve your issue. If not, consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod or visit your local Apple Retail Store.

  • I was syncing my ipod (1st gen) while downloading an update to Itunes and now i get the sad ipod icon...can someone help me out or explain how to get it fixed? cause the Apple STore is acting weird and I don't know what to do

basically the title says it all...I've been using this for the longest time and now after i was syncing the ipod while downloading an update for Itunes the sad face ipod icon shows up and everything i try won't fix it. I'm wondering if anyone knows how they can help me fix it...please!

The Sad face icon is usually a very good indication of a hardware malfunction or failure usually with the iPod's Hard Drive, which would also explain the loud clicking noise you are hearing.
I assume you have seen this article yet?

  • HT1363 hi, i use an old but great black photo/video ipod. Suddendly it won't recharge, when connected it emits several clicks and an ipod icon appears together with the apple support email address. I have tried to restore and reset but it won't work. Any

hi i use an old black 60G photo/video ipod. Suddenly it won't recharge, when connected to the pc it emits several cicks in serires and then it shows at intervals a low battery signs and another sign, a sad faced ipod icon with the apple support email address. Any clues and to how I can rescue it? Thank you very much. Alf1962

I am having essentialy the same problem, but my iPod came from a PC and is now on a PC. The person who gave me the iPod didn't give me the wall adapter piece, so I bought a "Griffin" brand that was said to be compatible with this model. When I first plugged it into the wall, the Apple appeared with a bar underneath as though it was loading the new software. When the bar got to the end, the "plug into the wall" icon reappeared, but when I plug it in to the wall now, that icon is the only thing that shows, even after resetting and trying to run diagnostics.
When I doc the iPod on a charger I have or plug the USB into my computer and "reset" it, a battery with a charge icon appears, but there is no "motion" in the icon so it doesn't appear to be charging. The screen eventually goes back to the apple then to the "plug it into the wall" icon. HELP!!! Is is possible the wall adapters isn't the right one? Should I be charging through a firewire cable instead (which I also don't have...)?
