Sad Face on IPod for no apparent reason.

I didn't drop my Ipod, I didn't do anything close to it, for it to give me the sad face. My Ipod was working fine, when it froze for no reason, so I tried resetting it, and I got the sad face all of the sudden. I tried resetting it again and the apple logo appeared and then the sad face, I did it repeated times ad nothing. Then I connected it to my computer and it didn't recognized my Ipod either so I couldn’t restore it, and then I got this battery like icon with a light bolt on it like it needed to be charged, so I got it on the AC power adapter and it didn't want to charge, it kept restarting itself back to the sad face. (First the apple logo appeared and then the sad face. I got this Ipod on August 05, I really don't want to send it to service, please help me, I’m really sad, I take good care of my things, and it makes me sad that I only have it for this short period of time and it won't work. My dad it's going to get really mad.
I have the Ipod photo of 60G.
I tried also to get it on disk mode, and nothing, it just kept going to the apple logo then the sad face.

I have to mention that I am not a techician, I may not understand the reason behind, I could be wrong and my suggestion may not work in your case. But, I must say that all the suggestions I made are basically from my past experienece fixing more than 10 iPods (from my friends and family members). I do not and have no intention to make a suggestion purely from what I heard and read (otherwise I would indicate). These have been tested and proved to work in my cases. I also have to deal with iPod problems such as:-
1. Sad iPod
2. Folder with exclamation mark
3. iPod failed to be recognized by the computer
4. broken iPod with 'clicking' sound
I can simply post a link from the apple article - which would suggest you to do a Reset and Restore actions, however, most of the users would agree with me that the iPod with the aforementioned problems would not able to get mounted with the computer. In that case, how could you do a Restore. Should I just suggest the user to send their iPods for repair?
I have tried myself with different ways, and I discovered a trick to solve the above problems. First, we must understand what is the problem behind - in my opinion, the problem mainly caused by the head of HD of the iPod getting stuck at a certain point and unable to read the sector properly. If an iPod is an external Hard Disk, how are you going to fix it, I believe that all of us would suggest one to do a Reformat. Right, but unfortunately, the iPod could not be mounted, so what next? I find an interesting way - when the iPod is formatted in PC and connected with a Mac computer, it will "Force" mount, then why not do a Restore there. And once it has been completed, re-connect it with your original PC, and this time with the iPod being formatted to a different format, a window will pop up, indicating that it cant read the iPod and ask whether you would like to do a reformat. Then open the iPod updater and click Restore (back to PC version). Again, interestingly, it works the other way as well i.e. Mac's iPod fixed with a Window based PC.

  • Songs re-downloaded on iPod for no apparent reason when updating

I have a 30gb iPod Photo with the latest firmware and iTunes version. The problem is that whenever I plug in my iPod to update it, many songs that were already on my iPod are re-downloaded to my iPod for no apparent reason, thus lengthening the time it takes my iPod to update by quite a bit (sometimes it's a couple hundred songs that update). Why are these songs being re-downloaded to my iPod when I already had them on there? How can I keep this from happening? Thanks.

    Hi Jensen Gelfond,
If you change your iPod settings in iTunes to 'manualy manage songs' it will stop the auto update re-updating your songs.

  • ITunes copies some songs twice onto IPod for no apparent reason?

I've noticed that my IPod/Itunes sometimes copies songs twice into my IPod. I used to manually manage music, but I just changed to sync mode in hopes that it stops copying music twice. I just wanted to know if theres a way to fix it or if its unavoidable. Using Itunes 7.0.2 and have an 2g 8gb ipod nano.

A spelling or punctuation mistake, or sometimes a trailing space usually causes this after the artists and/or song name, which fools the iPod into thinking that there are two different artists or songs. The trailing space is the hardest to spot.
Best way to cure this is to go into iTunes, highlight that artist and/or songs, right click on them and select "get info".
This brings up the multiple song info window. In the artist or song box retype the name, as you would like it, and then click ok. Do this even if no mistakes are immediately visible.
Re sync this new artist/song info to your iPod.

  • Sad face on iPod - will reset but then freeze

I've been on the Apple website for about an hour and need some help. I toggled the hold switch as instructed, made sure that the iPod was hooked up to a charge, pressed the select and menu buttons until the Apple icon came up, but then I still just get the iPod with the sad face on it telling me to log into Apple support.
What can I do now? Thanks.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes

    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • HT4113 My daughters iPod touch asks for her pass code but when she types it in the cursor does not move or input any characters so,she cannot get into the iPod. This has suddenly happened for no apparent reason

My daughters iPod touch asks for her pass code but when she types it in the cursor does not move or input any characters so,she cannot get into the iPod. This has suddenly happened for no apparent reason, what can we do? Can anyone help please?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT1351 I have ipod touch 64GB. It worked fine for a few months but now for no apparent reason it has stopped syncing my playlists. Operating sysytem on my ipod is iOS 7.1.2. My itunes is 11.3.1.2.

My ipod touch 64GB. It worked fine for a few months but now for no apparent reason it has stopped syncing my playlists. Operating sysytem on my ipod is iOS 7.1.2. My itunes is 11.3.1.2.
    Please help.

What exactly happens when you try to sync?
    Does iTunes see the iPod?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Does any media now sync to the iPod?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

  • Ipod freezing and restoring for no apparent reason

sometimes my ipod just stops what music it's playing and for no apparent reason ,goes back to the homescreen. when i update the ipod, all the play counts from before the "crash" (not really a crash, but that's the term i'll use) are wiped clean, as if i never played them. What's going on?

my ipod is refuseing to download apps for no apparent reason restrictions are off latest ios is on there but i cant press the buy/download button in app store

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings>Stoe and sign out and then sign back in
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset networks settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
Could just be an Apple problem. So far I have seen another post today with same problem.

  • Mail Periodically Crashing For No Apparent Reason

    Greetings,
This really isn't a major problem for me, but it shouldn't be happening, and I'd like to see if someone can help me find out why it is. Here's the deal: Starting about a month ago, Mail will just randomly quit, for no apparent reason. It doesn't happen at any specific time, or when I do something specific, etc. It just suddenly quits. Sometimes my Mac will have been running for a few days, sometimes just a few hours. Sometimes when I have several other apps running, sometimes when there's only one or two other apps running. I really can't discern any real pattern. My Mac is pretty much always on, but I usually restart it every few days, and use Cocktail to run maintenance tasks and repair permissions every other week. The first time this happened was on 10/26/08, actually, it happened twice that day. These are the dates that it has happened, to give you an idea of how often it occurs:
    10/26/08 (2x)
    10/28/08
    11/04/08
    11/10/08 (x2)
    11/12/08
    11/15/08 (x2)
    11/20/08
    11/21/08 (x2)
    11/23/08
    11/25/08
I can always relaunch it again without incident right away.
I don't know if this will be of any help, but below is the crash log from the most recent time it quit. I always install every update as soon as I receive them from Apple, but I've inadvertently cleared my installed update history, so I can't check to see if there was a specific update I installed around the time this started happening.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Again, this isn't critical, and is not inconveniencing me, it just shouldn't be happening, and I'd like to try and figure out why it is.
This is happening in my dual 2.7 G5 running 10.5.5 w/ Mail 3.5.
    Thanks in advance!
    Take care,
    ~Chris

Maybe Mail's message index is corrupt. The following procedure is safe to try. Its only deleterious effect is that windows you left open in Mail at step 1 won't reopen automatically in step 4.
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Browse to ~/Library/Mail.
    3. Move "Envelope Index" to your desktop.
    4. Launch Mail.
Mail will rebuild its index before it opens any windows. It may take a few minutes to rebuild. Be patient!
The new index is likely to be a different size than the old one, usually smaller.
Only the Message Viewer window will open--not any other windows you may have left open when Mail quit.
Be sure your mail folders are there and have their messages. They always are there, but the prudent check anyway.
Be sure you can send and receive mail. This always works, too.
After you have done the above, trash the old Envelope Index that you saved on your desktop. It is never better than the new one, and as time goes on, it becomes more and more out of synch with your mail folders, so you won't want to put it back in Library.
If Mail doesn't crash for a week or two, you probably fixed the problem. If not, you at least freed up some disk space.
Let us all know whether and how you solved your problem.

  • HT1937 I have an imac and an iPad. emails are synched but suddenly, last night, the calendar on my imac was erased for no apparent reason but it is still on my iPad. what has happened and can how do I resynch calendars?

I have an imac and ipad. Last night the calendar was erased for no apparent reason. It remains on my ipad. what happened and how can I get the calendar dates back on my imac?

    Hello Chisels,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. If you want to get content from your iPad to you iMac, there are a few things to try.
First check to the iPad to see if it is syncing with iCloud. To do this, go to Calendar app and click the Calendars button in the upper left hand corner. If it says iCloud, then all you need is to enable iCloud on your iMac if you are running 10.7 Lion or later. That preferences is System Preferences > iCloud, if you are
If on the iPad it says “On my iPad”, the following steps will guide you to get it back your iMac.
First, in iTunes, go to the preferences by clicking in the drop down menu iTunes  > Preferences… Go to the device tab and make sure to check the box that says Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from Syncing automatically.
Then follow the steps in the following articles to make a backup and the sync the data.

  • My nano's keep dyinig for no apparent reason.

This is the third Nano that has just stopped working for no apparent reason in the last 6 months. I'll plug it in to charge/sync and when I unplug and go to play it never turns back on. I also get a message that the USB port is no longer recognized by my computer. I've tried other computers and get the same message. I can see perhaps one ipod being currupt but all 3?

Could be a hardware or battery issue. Make an appointment with Apple Genius Bar and see what they can do.

  • ITunes won't import/play certain songs for no apparent reason

I have certain songs that will not play or import into iTunes for no apparent reason. I've been able to play them in QuickTime, Zune and Windows Media Player but for some reason iTunes won't even acknowledge them. When I click on the MP3 file iTunes will load up but not do anything. I've tried everything and can't figure out the issue.
I had been able to upload the songs to iTunes in the past as well with no issues until one day iTunes just decided they didn't exist anymore.
I'm really at wits end right now because i'd like to upload these songs to my iPod but can't do that now. What could the problem be?

It's probably a problem with the ID tags associated with the files. You can run this free program to fix the tags and see if that makes the tracks usable:

  • Itunes login window keeps popping up for no apparent reason

For about 2 weeks now the itunes login window asking for my itunes password keeps popping up for no apparent reason at annoyingly frequent intervals on my touch 3.1.2. This seems to occur regardless of what i am doing on the ipod or which app I am using at the time. If i enter my password and press ok the message still pops up again later. Anybody have a solution?

    Hi,
Please go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features to repair the Installation of Office, check if the issue persists.
If the issue still exists, I suggest you perform a clean boot to determine whether background programs are interfering with Communicator:

I hope the information is helpful.

It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office
    programs.

  • My itunes recently lost its library for no apparent reason.

My itunes recently lost its library for no apparent reason. The only library backup is an old one that does not reflect my current iPhone, and I do not want to have to re-input all the lyrics for the music I have imported in that time. Does itunes not automatically create a backup of its libraries? Is there anyway to copy this information off the iPhone?
I'm okay to simply drag all my music into a new itunes library, I don't want to go through the process of editing each individual file again, whether its cutting certain start/stop times, or inputting the lyrics for every single song...
Any ideas? I've tried googling a solution for hours. I even tried to system restore. This morning when opening Itunes, it simply told me that it could not locate a library, please select a library.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
