Sad face on screen

my ipod keeps showing me a sad face on the screen and it wont connect to itunes. I've tried to reset it but everytime i press a button the sad face comes up. Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem?

Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.

8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity.For instance you have a 500GB hdd so you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

HT1363 My ipod touch 32GB keeps clicking and won't turn on or charge even though power is getting to it. The screen shows a sad face ipod.

While the nano is connected to your computer and iTunes is open, hold down the volume up, volume down and sleep/wake button at the same time until iTunes brings up a dialog then release the buttons.
The dialog should walk you through 'recovering' the nano. See if that does it for you.

Ipod went to white screen with a sad face...WHAT HAPPENED!!?

I kept my ipod in good condition and out of nowhere it stopped working. Now it goes to a white screen with a picture of a ipod with a sad face and under the ipod it gives a link to the support page. It goes strait to that screen when i turn my ipod on...if anyone knows plzzz help me out.

this is hard drive failure, you may need to replace the hard drive, but if you ipod is still under warranty then send it in if you want.
if you fix it on your own, ifixipodsfast.com has some video tutorials on hard drive replacement, and hard drives on ebay are.... cheap (can be pricey depending on size and condition)

Doesn't seem to charge, not being read, and have the sad face

pretty much it. I have the 80G. It was freezing today so i tried restarting it but then it didn't respond to the buttons as if it was on hold but the music was still playing but the screen was frozen. So i hooked it up to a ipod boombox so it would kinda charge and reboot itself. Next thing i know, i'm getting the sad face and even though it's now been plugged into the computer for about 3 hours, there is no sufficient charge and when it does come on i still get the sad face.

Sad face with exclamation point on my Ipod

hi, my name is John and i live in South america.
Two days ago i got a problem with my Ipod, it got frozen and i clicked on the menu and the select button. It turned off and never started anymore. Now i get a sad face and a exclamation point on the screen.
If i press really long on the select and the pause/play buttons i get it in disk mode with written OK to disconnect. But when i attach it to my computer it shutsdown in 20 seconds.
Can someone give me some advice on this problem ?

Need Help.... Try to restart and get an ipod with a sad face in it...

Ok I was shutting down my ipod on night and the ipod stuck on a song... So I preceded to restart the ipod!
When I restarted the ipod I got a picture of a ipod with a sad face and text saying "www.apple/support/ipod" after that the screen goes dark and has a battery symbol with a lightning bolt at the end of it...
I have tried everything...
1. Restart
2. Update
Other than that I am out of options

From what I have seen I need to go into "Disk Safe Mode"
Only problem is that I still get the same images on my ipod.
Its as if my ipod doesnt have power, so I connect it to my USB port and still get nothing

well my ipod got int the washing machine and anyway it was all messed up the screen was all foggy and wet, but now the screen looks normal and all and now the sad face won't go away. Sad face on iPod - will reset but then freeze

I've been on the Apple website for about an hour and need some help. I toggled the hold switch as instructed, made sure that the iPod was hooked up to a charge, pressed the select and menu buttons until the Apple icon came up, but then I still just get the iPod with the sad face on it telling me to log into Apple support.

2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”

Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. My ipod will either show the sad Ipod face, or the folder with the exclamation mark when I try to turn it on. Also my computer won't even recognize it. It wont work or anything. I have tried to reset it, but nothing works. What are my options? I went to check out the repair options but when I choose defective unit, it wants me to pay over $200. Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Sad Face on my Ipod. is it battery related?

I have an ipod 20Gb 4th gen/. Earlier today, it seems to have been a battery problem, i kept charging but the battery comes with one bar red, then a folder with exclamation pt. I was able to go to disk mode.
Now all of a sudden , i get a Sad face and nothing responds, Menu+select or Select+Play doesn't seems to respond.
I am thinking of buying a new battery and install it. can it be it?

1. Battery normally need to be replaced every 18 months
2. Folder of exclamation icon = corrupted or bad iPod OS file

A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

Hi, I'm Stan, and I've found some useful tips in solving this problem.
This mini-guide is based on what I've found on my old clickwheel 20GB, B&W iPod (actually my bro's. My own video pod works great).
Description of what I call the, "apple logo/sad face" problem:
When I press any button, the apple logo appears, then after a few impatient seconds, the sad face appears, showing "www.apple.com/support/ipod/" at the bottom. Apparently, many ppl have this problem.
iPod commands:
Hold down the following buttons for the following commands:
MENU + Select=Resets the iPod. This "exits" your iPod out of whatever mode, bringing up the apple logo, hopefully but most unlikely fixing your iPod.
|<< + Select= the secret diagnostic mode. You'll see: apple logo, then backwards apple logo for a split second (backlight will light up), then you'll see "IRAMPASS. HITPLAY CONTINUE". NOTE: '|<<' is known as the 'reverse' button. aka the 'rewind' or 'previous' button. it's the left button of the iPod. I got confused by the word, 'reverse' b4.
|| + Select= Disk Mode. You'll see a √, should say "OK to disconnect" and you'll see the battery icon and your battery life remaining. NOTE: '>||' is known as the 'play/pause' button. it's the bottom button.
Now then, now that we have that cleared, you're still wondering why your pod ain't going into either disk mode or diagnostic mode. Here's probably why:
My old, clickwheel 20GB pod can infact reset, disk mode, and diagnostic mode. According to Apple, you must reset your pod, then hold down the two buttons for whichever mode you want. I did this, and had no luck. For all you stumped fellows, try skipping the first step. In other words, when your pod is off, hold down |<< and Select without resetting. Same goes for disk mode.
Here's what my pod does, and what your pod may or may not do:
-Takes a really long time to go into disk mode, yet it's still possible.
-when attempting to connect to computer while in disk mode, it shows the normal "do not disconnect" screen, then reverts to the sad face.
-the HDD SCAN and HDD R/W SCAN don't work in diagnostic mode (Maybe they actually do, but I ain't waiting any longer).
-I've concluded that if you hear the whrring sound (sounds like the hard drive disk is struggling to spin properly, very quiet, must put pod close to your ear to hear it), your pod is "stuck" and won't do anything.
This mini-guide isn't a solution, but merely all of Apple's feeble advice put into words that iPod noobs can understand. So next time you read something like "try putting your iPod into disk mode, connect it, and hope it shows up in Disk Utility.". you'll be saying "it's not showing up!!" instead of "the sad face won't let me put it into disk mode!!"
