Sad Ipod Face?

Okay, I've had my iPod for a couple of months now, since about May or so, and it's been working absolutely fine. Until just recently, I chose a song to listen to, when it froze, so I tried restarting it, but when it turned back on, it was a white screen with a iPod with a sad face, and under that it had "apple.com/support/ipod". It hasn't done anything since then, and I'm worried, because I've taken fine care of it...I can't figure out how to fix it...Any help is appreciated...

Ok, whenever i attempt to charge my iPod with the mains, it resets itself then shows a sad ipod face. When i connect it to my computer it resets itself, shows the sad face and then sticks on the low battery screen. The "five r's" do absolutly nothing, (didn't last time either)and i've tried forcing it into disk mode, but it ain't happnin' lol. I've also dropped it quite a few times to see if it would correct the disk, but it hasn't. iPod also had a new battery this morning.
Anythin' else i could try?

B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.

If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.

I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. My iPod displays black & white battery charge icon and sad iPod face. help!

I plugged my iPod into an older iMac; it froze and had to be restarted.
I restarted it and started listening on shuffle.
It would skip through all of my songs without me pressing any buttons.
I restarted again and it worked fine.
I came home and plugged it into my 10.3.9 iMac and the tracks started skiping and barely playing on iTunes.
I tried to eject it, but it wouldn't...so I unplugged it.
I then restarted it, but after the silver-on-black iMac icon came up, the sad iPod face showed.
So I pluged it back into the computer. It spontaniously restarted when I tried all of the steps of restarting and reinstalling.
Then it just displays a black& white old battery charge icon with a thunder bolt that flickers on the screen now and then.
And continues to restart itself with first the apple icon turning into the sad ipod face and then into the battery charge icon.
I really do not want to restore my iPod. I am hoping to keep my files but at this point, my future is bleak.
This happened last night. They said it might just be my battery so I kept it plugged in for about 10 hours. Nothing.
What can I do?

Sad ipod face on my ipod = sad me /cry

so my ipod has been doing awesome for the last couple of years, but the other day it had a sad ipod face on my ipod and it had x.x on the face. it was cute but now pod is a brick.... what can i do? a reset does nothing (menu + button) it will not recharge, it is cold and lifeless......
what shall i do?

Stuck on sad Ipod Face

I have an ipod mini 4gb and when I boot it it goes from the apple icon to a sad ipod face with an exclamation mark and stays there. I've tried to reset it with the menu and select button but it just goes the the apple icon and stays on the sad ipod icon. My computer doesn't register it's plugged into my USB. Anyone have any idea how to rememdy this? Thanks for the help.

I hate to tell you this...but the sad face is an indication that your iPod needs to be serviced.

Continuing problem- sad iPod face

Whenever i start up my iPod, it displays the sad iPod face. It then goes to start charging but freezes on the first full block. Then will turn itself off, and repeat this process on it's own.
My PC does not recognise it is connected and will not appear in Itunes or My Computer.
I have tried resetting the pod, putting it in disk mode, and even reformatting it, but everytime it is turned on, i keep getting the same dispay, and i cannot access the iPod in anyway.
If anyone could suggest a method for solving this issue, i would appreciate it, otherwise that £170 wasted.

Have the sad iPod face, no resets or reinstalls worked. Alternating between sad iPod face is a "Please wait, Very Low Battery" notice. Been trying to charge for hours, same messages.

"Sad iPod Face" + iPod isn't recognised

Hi (iPod Mini 4GB)
When i plugged it in the other day because the battery was empty, it wasn't recognised by itunes or my computer. All i saw was a frozen charging bar with the lightening bolt at one end on the iPod screen. After doing 'menu + select' for 6 seconds, i saw a 'sad ipod face' on the screen...
So I viewed the apple help page which instructed me to:
1. switch to 'hold' and the back again
2. hold down 'menu + select' for 6 seconds
3. hold down 'play + select' for 6 seconds.
But still i keep getting the sad face followed by frozen charging bar.
Could anyone help?

2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)

Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Another Case of the Sad Ipod Face

A couple weeks ago, my Ipod (5g video) went into the dreaded Sad Face Ipod - Apple logo mode. For a week or so I've been scanning these forums for help and so far, to no avail.
As of this moment I have:
1)Tried connecting with computer to restore, but, will not automatically recognize.
2)Tried doing 1) on another computer.
3)Went into diagnostic mode to reset.
4)Went into diagnostic mode for hard drive scan under IO, but only HDSpecs and HDSmartdata are available.
5)Have manually forced disk mode, yet still is rarely recognized by Itunes. And even when it is, when I restore it, the bar keeps going for hours.
6)Being fed up, I eventually opened it up and looked for the reset button on the hard drive. Found out however that there is no such button on the factory made 5g's.
7)Unplugged everything to try and reset that way.
8)created pressure under the hard drive with a business card
9)Followed the classic idea of dropping it repeatedly.
After all of those there has been no improvement, simply the sad faced Ipod and the apple logo.
One other way of fixing it that I've wanted to try is by manually working with it via My Computer, yet the Ipod icon never appears, so any hints on that would be appreciated.
If there's anyone with other ideas, I would greatly appreciate them. My warranty is up (would have anyway since I opened it up) so I'll probably be buying a new one if nothing works soon.

Replaced Hard drive and logic board on ipod 5.5g...still get sad ipod HELP!

I've tried searching around the forums to see if anyone has had this similar problem AFTER replacing the hard drive in their ipods. Of course there are tons of people with similar issues, and the responses are always "replace the hard drive", so I'm going to see if there are any other possible issues out there that I could look into. So here's my situation specifically.
I have an ipod video 80 gig, and it seemed as if the hard drive pooped the bed on day 366 (only a slight exaggeration) after purchase, putting me right outside of my warranty. The apple store wouldn't do anything without charging me the cost of a new ipod to repair it. So, it had been sitting in my desk drawer for almost a year when I finally got around to replacing, and upgrading, the hard drive. I found a 120 gig drive on ebay, which after an email confirming my model, the seller said should work as a replacement. After installing the hard drive, I got the same exact problem that I had before. It would say to "wait. low battery", then the apple logo would show up with no back light, and then it would go right to the sad ipod face. I left it charging for a couple of hours, and it would just keep cycling through those three screens, until dying eventually after unplugging it. If I hook it up to my computer, nothing happens besides the ipod trying to charge. When I try to force it into disk mode, it seems like the ipod will reset to the apple logo screen, but it goes right back to doing the same little dance. I tried opening it and checking the cables a couple of times, and the last time, I broke the little cable clamp that holds the lcd ribbon. So...I ended up buying a replacement logic board. I installed that, hoping the logic board may have been the problem all along, and as soon as I plugged it in...same old crap. Now, in a last ditch effort, I've ordered a new hdd ribbon to see if that remedies the problem.
I realize that I should have perhaps waited a week until it comes, to see if that fixes it. But to be honest, I can't see anything wrong with the hard drive cable that I have right now, so I remain doubtful that it's going to fix anything. What I'm wondering, is if anyone has any idea if there is something that I may have overlooked, or if I might be barking up the wrong tree? Is it possible that the hard drive that I ordered was broken when I installed it? The seller (who seems to be a reputable seller on ebay, with lots of positive feedback) said that they test all of there hard drives before selling/shipping, and that there is no way that they shipped me a broken one. They also seemed convinced that the hard drive would work with my model. Is there anything other than the hard drive, or logic board that could cause this type of problem? Is the hard drive ribbon the only other possibility? Is there something software wise that I can do?
Please. Any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent more on this thing than I could have paid for a used, but working one, and I'm about to lose it.

UPDATE:
Ive installed the new hdd ribbon. It seems to have gotten me a little closer to solving my problem. I am now able to get into disk mode, and if I reset it, I can get to a screen telling me to connect my ipod to itunes and restore it. However, after the restore process, it says it's resetting the ipod, and then it goes right back to telling me that it needs to be restored. I've been trying to search all the forums on the "restore loop". It seems like a lot of people have had luck changing the drive letter. My problem is, that I can't get into the disk management window. When I try to click on it, I get the "program is not responding" and the window freezes until I close it. Again, I'm using windows Vista 64.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'll just try to keep trying, and keep looking around in the mean time.

Ipod alternates between 3icons(verylowbatt, appl logo, sad support face)

used my ipod all day at work with just music and without realizing why it turned itself off. I assumed that it was the battery and plugged it into an electrical outlet with the adapter. It now alternates between these 3 icons and it is no longer recognized on my powerbook when I plug it in and I cannot seem to restore it. When I tried to restore it with the menu and select button, I keep getting the same 3 icons - about twice I got the message to plug it into my computer; the first time my powerbook was not available and I left it alone, the 2nd time I plugged it into my comp and the ipod was not recognized by Itunes. Once I received the checkmark to restore and when I connected to my computer - nothing happened
Any ideas? Should I just set up a service ticked with apple?

The Sad face icon is usually a very good indication of a hardware malfunction or failure usually with the iPod's Hard Drive, which would also explain the loud clicking noise you are hearing.
