Safara vulnerability on older MacBook?

We have an older white Mac Book which can't upgrade to Mavericks due to system limitations.
This seems to also mean that I can't upgrade to a new version of Safari which has had the
security vulnerability patched.  Am I correct in assuming this?  And, if so, do I have any option
other than simply avoiding Safari altogether?

So, just to be clear, you are suggesting that the latest security hole in Safari, did NOT effect earlier versions of that app?  Because I haven't done a software update since this was discovered and none is currently available.
Of course, Apple is particularly mum on the entire issue, as always...

I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. As you can imagine this is very annoying. It says I am not connected to the internet and offers me a choice of nearby networks including mine and then asks for a password when I select it. Why does it do this with our new MacBooks (also with my son's brand new one) and not with the iPhone, iPad and older MacBook? They happily automatically connect to our network after entering the password just the once.

Sig, I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I have no idea what issues you were having or what issue exactly pgrounds has been having. Your assumption that everyone's set up is the same as yours is false however. There are many many documented WiFi issues that are a result of Lion installs. Many have been solved by 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. Others have been solved by a large variety of work arounds. Others have not had their issues solved yet.
I am one of those. I have an IT background, and I spent the better of five hours digging up workarounds and attempting all of them. For the benefit oh anyone who is having similar issues, I have posted links to all of those workarounds here. None of them worked in my case, but hopefully they will help pgrounds or others.
So, once again, if you have a new idea, I'd love to here it. But if it has already been posted in one of these links, it's not helpful, let it go.

  • I have an older MacBook Intel 2 Duo processor 2.4Gh 4GB mem running 10.6.8.  Yahoo just informed me I must upgrade my Safari (5.1.10). How much can I upgrade from 10.6.8 without degrading performance?

I have and older MacBook Intel 2 Duo processor 2.4 Ghz, 4GB mem, running 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.10.  Yahoo has just informed me that they will no longer support Safari 5.1.10 and my question is how much higher than 10.6.8 can I go to get a better Safari before I start reducing performance on an older computer? It is about 6 years old but runs fine for my purposes.

If you want to stay with 10.6, try Firefox which is still being updated.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space

  • Need to set-up an older macbook with a different email for my husband to use

I have 2 mac notebooks, 1 older macbook + 1 new macbook air both were set-up with me as the admistrator. I want to set up the older mac book for my husband to use. Right now both computers are set to my email and have me as an administrator - they both maintain all of my settings for example, the Safari bookmarks are the same on both computers. We did download OX Lion on the macbook and my husband does have an Apple ID . What else do I need to do to separate the computers so we each have our own? We share an iTunes account so that is not an issue.

These are the directions of OS 10.7. Some of the details are different on other OS.
    1. On your husband's computer, go to System Preferences / Users & Groups and click the padlock to unlock.
(U & G was called Accounts in older OS - not sure what you have on that older Macbook.)
    2. Click the + sign. That will give you a new pane.
    3. In New Account, select Administrator ( the default is "Standard").
    4. Complete all the other fields.
After this is done, close that pane. Now back in U & G, select Login Options.
Set Automatic login to your husband's name.
Restart the computer, and select your husband's name. Check that all is well.
You can now, if you wish, go back to U & G, unlock and select your own name and click the - sign. That will remove your name from the computer.
You will also need to configure Mail for your husband's email with his password. When he first clicks on Mail he will be guided through the setup steps.

  • Optimising for two cores on an older macbook

I use an older macbook with snow leopard (not sure how old, but it has two cores) and I'm trying to get the most out of it as I can, because at times things run slowly (ever since I got SL, iTunes has been running prohibitavely slowly, Safari tends to freeze every so often and I use Sibelius, which can slow things down a lot during playback). I noticed that only the left side of my computer got hot when I was using it. I don't know much about the anatomy of a macbook, so would this be because that's where both cores are? Only the left fan tends to run (I use an application that allows me to control fan preferences), so it appears that only the left side is doing much. Now, I understand that the right side is probably all taken up by the CD drive, but if it isn't, would there be any way of fiddling with the software to enable both cores to be working away so things aren't so slow?

RAM is Random Access Memory.  It looses its contents when you shutdown your Mac or loose power.
Storage, or for you, is your hard disk.  Some newer systems have Solid State Disks (like a very fast USB Thumb drive ).  It remembers its contents even when there is no power.
Virtual Memory is a trick that allows the computer to pretent it has more RAM than really exists, by allowing parts of a program's active data to be written to disk when not being used (paged out) and read back into RAM when it is needed again (paged in).  You pay a price in time while waiting for the much slower disk to pageout/pagein data.  This is a very simplified description of Virtual Memory, as it is far more complex and has uses beyond just allowing a small amount of RAM to run much larger programs.
As den.thed says, if you can add more RAM it is the best way to improve the performance of your current system.  Check out Curcial.com and MacSales.com as 2 well recommended Mac RAM vendors.  You can get instructions on how to replace the RAM from these sites and iFixIt.com
Another option is to consider the age of your Mac and decide is trying to improve its performance is worth it vs just buying a new Mac.  Adding RAM is much cheaper, but will it make you happy, or will you then go out and buy a new Mac shortly afterwards?
Another performance enhancement that may NOT be worth the investment, would be replacing the current slow hard disk drive with a solid state disk drive, or getting a conversion kit that replaces the DVD drive with a solid state disk.  The solid state disk would make loading programs faster, as well as any pagein/pageout activity would be faster.  But the cost is such that you are starting to get closer to the cost of a new Mac which would come with lots more RAM and much faster CPU.  So you have to figure whether such an investment is really worth it.

  • Why is thunderbolt ethernet only 80Mb instead of 200Mb on my older MacBook Pro

Why is thunderbolt ethernet on my new MacBook Pro (2014) only 80Mb, instead of 200Mb without thunderbolt on my older MacBook Pro?

Why not perform Safari > Reset with all options checked? Restart Safari.
How many Safari extensions and plug-ins are active? In Safari > Preferences > Advanced, have you checked stop plug-ins to save power?
Browsers must locally expand compressed images from remote sites. As the image size and quantity increase, or the proliferation of Flash advertising increases, so does the performance penalty.
We all wish we had a direct point-to-point Internet connection. Unfortunately, one or more overloaded, attacked, ill-configured, or failing network edge devices along the connection may contribute to site delays.
Depending on your workflow habits, and machine configuration, you may be encountering periods of low available memory
Any anti-virus/malware software installed will drain away system performance.
I haven't tested this, but have often wondered if Safari consults with an Apple DNS server to find browser destinations — and if this is a source of additional, overloaded network performance delay.

  • How to connect an older MacBook Pro with mini VGA port to HDMI?

I have an older MacBook Pro with a female mini VGA port.  I would like to watch movies which have been downloaded to my laptop on my flat screen TV.  Newer MacBook Pros have a mini DisplayPort for which Belkin makes a cable to use; however, I have not been successful in finding either an adapter or converter to use with my older laptop.
FYI.  Am currently using Leopard but am upgrading to Snow Leopard.

I believe you naeed the Apple ADC to DVI adapter.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • How do I disable airplay on an older macbook pro?

I have an older macbook pro (model is mid-2010) with Mountain Lion installed.
When my Apple TV is on, my computer keeps trying to connect to it via Airplay.  But Airplay is not supported on my macbook pro and the sound stops working.
How do I disable my Mac from connecting to Airplay?

Do this test with the Apple TV on:
If you go into System Preferences > Sound > Output, which line is selected?
If the Apple TV is selected, can you select Internal Speakers? Will it stay on?
With Internal Speakers selected, do you get any sound output?

  • How do I restore a Time Machine backup from a newer MacBook Pro to an older MacBook Pro?

My MacBook Pro is in the shop and am using my older MacBook Pro in the meantime. I want to restore my older computer with the lastest backup from my newer computer, but I'm not able to see/access the backups from my newer computer - I can only see the backups from my old computer. Any suggestions?

That is probably due to the older computer being too old.
You can do a manual restore to a USB drive plugged into the computer. Then select the files you want.
    See pondini Q14-17 on restore.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Particularly 16 and 17.
You tend to migrate from older to newer computer and OS.. and it is not going to work the other way around.
