Safari 1.3 "saving/downloading file as..."

I just finally upgraded to Safari 1.3 tonight and realized that downloading a linked file will now save the file to the default download folder without asking for a location.
I have also figured out that opt+right-clicking will bring back the option to "save as.." but I wanted to know if it's possible to make it so that it asks me that every time. Is there a way to set it so the old "download linked file as..." appears on a right-click without having to hold down option?
Thanks.

Hi
Have a look here. Nothing is said about Safari version compatiblity. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work/Safari crashes. If so, simply move the items you installed to the trash and restart Safari.

I purchased an album online with my ipad2 directly from the artists website.  I received an email containing the link to allow me to download it.  I tapped on the link and the MSG came up saying Safari is unable to download file.  I have downloaded apps before with no problems.  This is the first music download I have purchased on my ipad2.  Maybe it has something to do with the security on the email I received from the artist containing the download.  I have the latest iTunes OS and apple iPad 2. O.S.  Any ideas on what to do?

You can't download music via Safari on the iPad - you will need to download it on your computer, add it to your computer's iTunes, and then sync it to the iPad.

  • Safari Issue, metadata in downloaded files.

A while back I noticed that the 'get info' panel for files I had downloaded with safari displayed a 'where from:' section, giving the URL of the site I had saved the file from. I appreciated the feature and it came in handy on a few occasions however, in more recent files the 'where from' section is absent. The change appears in files after the 25 August 2011. I'm not sure if this was taken out in an update, but is there any way to get this feature back?

Here are some screenshots with a preview of whether the rules will filter the file in question:

  • Safari - spyglass to open downloaded file in Finder fails

Just upgraded to 9.0 mavericks - I use Pathfinder 6 - fixed (no more hang).
Download in Safari work just fine and end up in the right folder but I can't use the spyglass to highlight a downloaded file in a finder winder
I get an error about not finding the file because it has moved (it hasn't tho)
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks

it didnt work, i tried chrome as well, but now found a way around it, actually the system was set to open files in the previewer, so I had save as the pdf file and then open it with pdf, and it worked.

  • Safari adding .hqx to downloaded file name

I am on an imac with mac os x 10.4.11 and safari 3.0.4. I download a mac cd image file with filename of the form x.y.z.iso. safari downloads it but, mysteriously, adds .hqx to the name so it stores on my mac as x.y.z.iso.hqx. Then it tries to unstuff it and says it is not an encoded file. Of course it is not. It is a volume image. if i rename the downloaded file to x.y.z.iso and double click on it, it brings up the volume just fine on my desktop and I can open it.
Does anyone know why Safari would decide to add .hqx to a file name on download?

I think you are in essence describing what is happening, except for how I got there. In our infinite wisdom in taking this original file, we set up the download with some file type info or some such that we figured Mac would like better. It messed it up. that is why I could never figure out why a file destined as a WINDOWS iso image never was mishandled by Safari. it downloaded it and even produced a volume entry when opened, on the mac desktop.
once we stopped messing with the mac image file and just downloaded it as it came, Safari downloaded it correctly and did not add .hqx to it. thanks.

    Hi,
If your profile is correct you need to update your system software to 10.5.8. Go here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
After the installation, restart your Mac, launch Safari and see if you can download files. If not...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
And make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
Go to ~/Library/Cookies and move the Cookies.plist file to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
If you still have problems downloading from the Apple site, Open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities) Find the "Safari AutoFill" item. Delete it. Relaunch Safari. Next time it asks for authorization, click "Always Allow".
Make sure the startup disk has enough free disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*

  • Am trying to download Calibre software for EBook management. Safari says can't download file. Why? How to fix?

I am trying to download E-Book management software (Calibre) on to my IPAD but Safari says download failed as Safari cannot download this file. Why is this.  I would have thought this was a fairly straight forward procedure?

If you are talking about Calibre, there is no iOS version.  There's an OSX version for Mac computers which are not the same as iPads.  Any and all software that can run on the iPad can only be installed from the App Store.
You cannot download anything thorugh Safari and try to install it, it just doesn't work that way.
Addiionally as has been already been pointed out Calibre installs on your Computer, not the iPad. You manage ebooks on the Computer.

  • A very disturbing Safari 6 problem when downloading files

After downloading a file from Hubspot.com, this is what I see when clicking on the Show Downloads button on Safari 6. This is actually the third time it's happened. I did a clean install of OS X 10.8 to see if the problem would go away. Sadly, it didn't.
Is anyone experiencing the same problem?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Internal Error upon Saving Downloaded Files

When I download an attached Word, Excel or PowerPoint file from an email received on my PlayBook, it opens fine, but if I try to save it to the PlayBook device (via either a Save or Save As), I get a message "Internal Error Occurred" followed by a 9-digit number in brackets. Why is this happening? I have no problems when I create a document on the device and save or resave it.

by any chance the message is this An internal error has occurred! (121045252)?
is that so maybe you need to update the BlackBerry Bridge application to 1.0.0.93 to solve this
Let me know if this correct

  • All files download INSIDE a Safari tab - not in Downloads window

One of my several Macs has now developed a very annoying problem. Anytime I click on any weblink that links to a file (say, a ZIP), that ZIP doesn't auto-open in Safari's Downloads window. Instead, Safari opens a new tab and tries to download it in a dark gray window, but never completes downloading the file. See the linked screenshot.
    http://www.daviddas.com/clients/safariproblem.png
I can't figure out how to fix it. Any help? (Note: if I copy the URL to the clipboard, open a new tab, and hit option-return, I can successfully force Safari to download it. However this is a tedious workaround every time I want to download a file, and it doesn't work when a more complex PHP app is not giving me the file's true URL.)

    HI,
Go to Safari/Preferences and click the General tab.
If you have the Safari preference "Open 'safe' files after downloading" selected, and Safari considered that a downloaded file was safe:
*Safari will automatically open the file after it's downloaded.*
*If the downloaded file is an archive (.zip file), Safari will decompress it.*
*If the downloaded file is a disk image (.img file), Safari will mount the image volume.*
*If Download Validation cannot determine that a downloaded file is safe, it will be stored in your default download directory just as if the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" preference was disabled.*
If Download Validation determines that a downloaded file is unsafe, you will be asked if you wish to download or cancel. If you download the file, it will be placed in your download location, as configured in Safari preferences. If you cancel, it will be saved as a web download in your download location, as configured by Safari preferences. It will be named the same as the original file with ".download" at the end of it. This can be moved to the Trash.

  • Preventing Preview from saving downloaded PDFs

I love Preview in many ways, but one way I miss Adobe (or is it Windows...?) is that the PDFs were saved as temp files and deleted when closed. This meant if I wanted a copy, I manually saved it. With Preview, my desktop can quickly fill up with unwanted copies. it gets worse when I revisit a PDF and get multiple copies of the same (seems like Preview would be smart enough to know it had already been there). How can I either prevent or change the location to which Preview saves downloaded PDFs?
Also, I'm using Firefox and it just occurred to me this could be Mozilla "functionality". Is it?

*The lack of a Google toolbar for Safari really has me down on it*
Hmmm! There's one on mine. You must have deleted it. Check View->Customize Toolbar and drag it back or just use the defaults setting.
How? I've yet to see options for either of these.
*First off, if you want PDF's to open in your browser, set it up that way.*
You need to install PDF Browser Plugin.plugin. Sorry, I've had it for over three years, so I forget it doesn't come with Safari. Get it at http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/
*If you don't want PDFs downloaded to your Desktop, change the download location.*
    Safari->Preferences->General->Save downloaded files to: whereever

  • Download files to iPod Touch?

I know it's possible to surf the net on the iPod Touch, but can you also download files?

    Hi There
The built in Safari browser won't download files. However there are 3rd Party apps on the app store that will, I couldn't find any free ones but a quick search turned up these results:

  • When downloading a file from Safari, it goes to downloads and you can't re-name the file before it is saved

I am new to MAC and have trouble when downloading files from Safari that I want to save to a particular folder with a new name.  Can you do that without first saving to downloads, then moving the file to the documents stack, then changing the name?

Although the right-click contect menu has "Download linked file as" and you would think that would allow you to rename the file as it is downloaded, it always gives me a useless html file.  Maybe I am misunderstanding what that menu item actually does. I long ago gave up on renaming files during download. So I'm as curious as you about whether it can be done.

  • How to download files or video from safari to be saved in an Apps?

Hi, can I find out a way to download video opened in safari in iPad, but don't want to save it in iPad and use up the space. Is there any Apps that I can save those files downloaded? Thanks!

You can't download files in Safari anyway, but even if you use another app to save the video, it will still take up space on your iPad.
It's not possible to store something on your iPad without it taking up space.
