Safari 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5 advice and tips needed

I'm new at all this so here I go...
After looking through the "discussions" it seems there's alot of problems to expect upgrading from Safari to Leopard and beyond.
What steps can I take to prevent or limit all those problems associated with the upgrade(s)??? what, where, how,
It appears that DU repairs and redownloading an update because of a corrupted file makes the biggest difference. What is the blue screen everyone talks about? can I prevent that first try upgrading?
So what if the installs goods error free...do I make the leap and update straight to 10.5.4?
Early 2006 model 20" Intel Core Duo iMac 2G Ram, 500G harddrive, x1600ATI.
Safari 10.4.11 or whatever the latest update is/was.
Upgrading to Leopard 10.5.1 or mb427a version i believe...

If you do things right you should not have problems. Those who do are simply not doing things right. Millions of users update without any problems or comment. A few hundred have problems and they all post about them here.
1. Repair your hard drive and permissions (use Disk Utility after booting from your OS X installer disc.)
2. Clone your startup volume to an external Firewire drive (use the Restore option of Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper!)
3. Boot your computer with the clone from the external drive to be sure it works.
4. Update the clone on the external drive using Software Update or downloading the standalone updater(s) directly from Apple's Download Site.
5. Restart from the updated clone and use it for a while to be sure everything is normal.
6. Update the normal startup volume.
Key operations:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
This may also be done using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

  • Popup TABS in Safari 4.0.1 on Leopard 10.5.7 and Tiger 10.4.11

So these aren't really the standard popup windows that we are used to. There are a couple of sites (kbb.com and yahoo's mail just for examples) that while they are loading I visit other tabs that I have opened and all of a sudden I am returned to the other tab. I have "Block pop-up windows" turned on and I have the other web content under security checked on. Does anyone know how to avoid these annoying interruptions and still be able to visit these sites? This happens to me at work on my G5 PowerMac on OS X 10.5.7 and at home on my MacBookPro on OS X 10.4.11

Similar here, but not quite the same. Mine has issues playing videos from CNet, I click on the page and nothing loads video-wise.
When I use Firefox, they all play just fine. Looks like the CNet pages are using Adobe Flash 10, which may be where problem lies..

  • Anyone else having major problems with Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard?

is anyone else having major problems with Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard?
    - address bar and search box are not resizing with browser window. the address bar and seach box set their size to the window when Safari is launched and remain that size.
    - anytime i try to customize toolbar items disappear and i have to restart Safari to get them to appear.
    - some 3rd party icons just remove themselves from the toolbar after a period of time
    - when i drag a page from the tab bar to create it's own browser window the window disappears but is listed in the windows menu bar. when i select that window from the menu bar the window appears but i can't click on anything.
I've repaired permissions numerous times, reinstalled safari numerous times and restarted my machine numerous times and the issues all remain. i've never had any issues with Safari until now and 5.1 is looking like a huge mess.
besides the bugs above, has anyone had any luck with 1password working with Safari 5.1?

ok, i narrowed most of my issues down to Web Snapper and Videobox by TastyApps. Removed both of those and now everything works better.
I went out to lunch and came back an hour later and magically ALL of my previous toolbar icons that were added to my previous version of Safari appeared. Very strange.
as for 1password, it wasn't working at all before when i posted. everytime i tried installing the extension via the app my, Safari would open a window and hang (never load). I just tried it again and it seems to now be working.

I suspect if you're trying to open a file in 08 that's been opened in 09 the file has been updated to 09 and will not open in 08.

It seems that I should have first updated Safari, and then only to Lion, which I didn't. Any idea how I can fix this now without having to rollback to Snow Leopard, update Safari and then go back to Lion?

  • Safari install asking for Leopard 10.5.2 and I'm running 10.5.4

I've seen this problem in other posts (Uninstalling Safari 4, Reinstalling Safari). For me this has cropped up because of MobileMe. When I go to me.com I get a screen saying I need the latest installation of Safari (or Firefox). Well I have the latest installation, Safari 3.1.2. So what the heck, I clicked on he me.com link to download Safari (to try and reinstall Safari) but the Safari installer (which looks to be 3.1.1) states that I need Leopard 10.5.2 and I'm running 10.5.4. I've always run Software update so everything should be up to date. So me.com isn't recognizing Safari 3.1.2 and Safari installer isn't recognizing my system? Have no idea why this is happening. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You're wasting your time trying to install Safari; you've already go the latest version so don't mess with it. MobileMe is up, and down, then up, then down…well, it's having "issues" so you're probably not going to be able to login for awhile. This problem is compounded by the fact that the iPhone 3G is launching today, which requires iTunes to activate. At the same time, there is new software for it and the iPod touch, and the combination of these three events is a massive drain on their servers, so much so that it affects service for everything.
Just wait until tomorrow until the frenzy dies down and things should improve. In the meantime, don't ever try to download Safari and reinstall it on your system; it will not work.

  • Safari will not load in Leopard

    HelP:
I had a devil of a time installing Leopard on a newly installed internal Seagate 500 GB in my G-4 933 MHz Quicksilver. I finally resolved that with someone who posted a response which took me to the terminal mode to resolve the user "log in" screen issue which I had.
Now I have Leopard working--so far so good--and now I have been trying to install some of the programs from the original CDs/DVs.
However, when I try to access Safari it does not complete the auto "log in" screen.
The auto URL hangs at the following:
    http://livepage.apple.com
I can access my e-mail and access software updates so apparently I can get to the internet.
However I can not use Safari to confirm the proper updates for the respective programs which I want to download. I have to "force quit" the Safari browser.
Then I have to reboot my computer and then go to Tiger which I have installed on a separate internal HD.
In order to access one operating system, or the other, I start up with Option key depressed and select one of the start up disk.
Are there any good suggestions for me to employ to access Safari in Leopard.

In attempt to fix my Safari hanging up problem in Leopard I tried installing the new 10.5.1 version update to my existing installed Mac OS 10.5 version of Leopard on a newly installed 500 GB HD. No improvement occurred in accessing Safari.
Then I went to the Safari Preference files in the Library>preferences and removed the com.apple.Safari plist preferences and re-started. Same problem occurred in trying to access Safari. Those two preferenes were updated but no change in to accessing Safari in Leopard.
I repaired permissions from the install disk in with disk utility. Lot of permissions were changed. No change in performance with Safari.
What is going on here with Leopard and the script to access is programed site.
I can access my internet mail--and I can send reports to Apple on my DSL Internet connection. The issue has to be somewhere in Safari or some similar issues within Leopard.
When I access Safari in Tiger, which is on a different HD, I have no issues.

  • Can't I get the latest Safari 7 for my Snow Leopard?

Our bank suggests their program would work better if we update our Safari version.  We have the highest version of Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard.  Do we have to download the Yosemite operating system in order to get improved Safari or can we download Safari 7 only into our Snow Leopard.
Also, has Apple stopped giving us updates for the Snow Leopard?

Per the following, Safari 5.1.10 is the latest for Snow Leopard. Apple - Support - Downloads
If you can't or don't want to update from Snow Leopard, another option would be to install Firefox and use it instead of Safari: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

  • Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard

    After an update to Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, I experience a lot of trouble with Safari. So far I've discovered this;
    1. Links that should open a new window does not work.
    2. Any new window whether it is from a link or cmd+n is hidden. You have to choose it from menu/window.
    3. The history arrows "show previous page" / "show next page" is grayed out and not working unless you go to menu/window.
    4. On opening Top Sites weird graphics is flickering in the Safari window. This is not all the time, but for the most part.
    5. Customizing the toolbar is not working. New buttons are not showing and they are gone when restarting Safari.
    6. Neither WebSnapper or 1P plugin works with this version of Safari. This one may of course be for the developers.
Anybody else experiencing some of these issues?

I had exactly the same issues you mentioned. Removing WebSnapper solved everything. Even 1Password is working now, where finally I managed to install the plugin for Safari.
About 1Password, double clicking an entry in your list does not work anymore. Apparently Apple has removed the API that allowed for that. Instead, in a login page, you will need to press [command + \] sequence to activate the plugin. If you have already entered the 1Password master password, the [command + \] sequence will automatically fill in the credentials and submit them.

  • Safari 4.0.3 for leopard 10.5.8 never ends loading

Ok, so I had Leopard 10.5.7 and updated to Leapord 10.5.8 and when I did Safari 4.0.2 downloaded with it.
Safari 4.0.2 never ended loading its start page. So when Safari 4.0.3 cam out, I deleted 4.0.2 and downloaded 4.0.3. Still the problem remains. As soon as I open Safari, it starts loading and never ends (I waited 1 hour one day). When its loading I cant even use Safari b/c the beachball comes up. Though other applications like Firefox do work, even when Safari is loading.
    How would I fix it.
    Thanks for your help!

Is anyone else having this problem????
Does anyone know how to fix it? Having to use Firefox is getting annoying after being used to Safari.
If it helps, I have Windows XP downloaded on the computer using bootcamp but this problem started way after I started using bootcamp.

Are you opening Safari directly from /Applications rather than using a Dock shortcut ?.
If the one in /Applications won't work either - what happens exactly... if there's a crash report, please post it here.
Also, check Software Update, and/or manually install  Safari 5.1.9 for Snow Leopard

  • Safari 5.1 update Snow Leopard Java no longer works

I've been doing quite a bit of reading regarding how the Lion update changed the rules of how Java works (or doesnt work) for the new Safari 5.1 browser.  I also had quite a time with existing plugins after my SN 10.6.8 was updated with the new safari 5.1.  For example Lass Pass totally closed down my Safari 5.1 browser and kept it from even launching.  I later found a post that suggested I remove the LPass plugins via uninstall
