Safari, 10.4.4 & .pdf Files

When I upgraded from 10.2.8 to Tiger, one new feature I liked was the ability of Safari to open .pdf files in the browser window, and in 10.4.3 Safari provided a version of the Adobe Reader toolbar at the top of the pane. This meant you could use the Adobe tools to zoom text, etc.
Since upgrading to 10.4.4 I seem to have lost this part of the interface, and wonder where it went/ whether I can get it back...
(Without the zoomer, some files are unreadable, and Command+/- don't have any effect on text size.)
Any suggestions, anyone??

Download and install or update Adobe Reader to version 7.0.5. Open the reader and select Preferences from the Adobe Reader menu. Click on "internet" in the left side list, then check the box labled "Display PDF in browser using" and set the drop down menu to Adobe Reader 7.0.5.

  • Safari will not open pdf files.

Safari will not open pdf files, instead I get a blank grey screen. How can I get a viewable and downloadable screen/file? Tried Alt/Option to view and it doesn't work either. Firefox and Chrome will not work either.

For Mac check the Safari preferences.
General to set the options for opening links from applications.
Tabs to set the other options.
Hold down the command key to open any link in a new tab.
Sorry, gave up windows several years ago.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Safari won't open PDF files anymore.

Hi,  This is a new problem for me. I have Mavericks 10.9.4 and Safari 7.0.6.  Whenever I click on a PDF link on a web page, I get a black screen - no error message at all.  The link works properly in Firefox.  I looked at my installed plugins and there are a couple for PDFs.  I've got Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro both installed.  Does anyone have any idea what could have changed or what I am missing?
    Thanks!

Make sure you have updated Acrobat X to the latest version 10.1.3.  They updated the PDF plug-in in 10.1.1:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_ 10.1.1.pdf#page=4

  • Safari isn't displaying PDF files

A friend has a new iMac with 10.4.10 and no Adobe software installed unless it came from Apple.
Using Safari to access the pay check site at adp.com she selects the pay stub date and it opens a window but doesn't display the PDF of the paycheck. Is there a setting for Safari that enables display of PDFs in the browser? The site is designed for IE and Netscape.
I installed Firefox 2 and when it accesses the site it prompts for what application to use to view the PDF and we chose Preview. The PDF gets downloaded and Preview displays it just fine. Would prefer that this get done in Safari instead though.

I can't remember if an Adobe Reader is in the Apple install or not, but Safari should use it's own reader unless told otherwise (for example, from the Adobe Reader preferences). You can try looking in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and /Users/yourusernamehere/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folders for a file named AdobePDFViewer.plugin. If one is there, move it out of the folder (for example, to your desktop), restart Safari, and retry your PDF file.

  • Safari does not open PDF files

For some reason, Safari decided to download PDF files instead of opening them. I have trashed my safari.plist file and still nothing. I have uninstalled Acrobat Reader and trashed all the files associated with it, including the PDFviewer plug-in. How do I fix this?

I had similar problems and the problem was solved as a side effect of my solving a scanner printer problem. I have an HP all in one (8500) and never could get the scanner to work properly. I called HP and they walked me through uninstalling and then going file by file through different folders to delete stray files that didn't uninstall with the uninstaller.
I then installed the new drivers and all my HP printer functions worked. Next time I opened a PDF with Safari it opened within the application and worked perfectly. Everyone is talking about an adobe conflict (which I also experienced earlier) but if getting rid of adobe plug-ins doesn't work maybe its printer related ... worked for me.

    Hey there,
I bought the new iPad to work with it at the university.
Now I can't even open the PDF-files from our homepage (it's moodle). Safari shows me the first site of the file and I'm not able open it in another program or even copy and paste the presentation.
I installed Acrobat Reader but nothing changed, using the link of the file in keynote wasn't the answer... so what's the solution -.-

  • Safari will not open PDF files and links

I know this has been posted before, but I have tried every suggestion including downloading and reinstalling Safari and Adobe Reader.. When I click on link to pdf file/document in Safari I get a new page but it opens as blank and black. This issue does not exist with Firefox. I have the latest versions of Safari and Reader. I mostly use safari and would appreciate any assistance with this issue.

    HI,
Right or control click a PDF file, then click: Get Info
    In the Get Info window click the pop up menu next to: Open with;
If Adobe Reader is not available from the list click Other. Navigate to your Applications folder and select Adobe Acrobat Reader, then click: Change All.
    Relaunch Safari.
Also, from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: Open "safe" files after downloading is ticked.

  • Safari doesn't display pdf file from within Dropbox

When I click on a link on a web page that takes me to a pdf file located in a shared Dropbox folder, Safari only gives me a solid black page and doesn't open the pdf file.  All the other browsers do, Chrome, Firefox and even IE.  How can I fix this?  I have Mountain Lion and the latest version of Safari.  Pdf-plugin-244 is installed.  I tried the suggestion in another posting about viewing pdf files in Safari, and it didn't fix the problem.

    Pdf-plugin-244 is installed.
    Test without it.

  • Safari can't open PDF files?

My Safari 1.3.1 operating in MacOS 10.3.9 cannot open any PDF files. Whenever I click on a link from which a PDF file can be downloaded, Safari asks me to select an Acrobat application. I do select Acrobat Reader 7.0.7 from my Applications folder, but then Safari only gives me a blank window, with no PDF file to view. The problem is likely in Safari, because I've also tried to open the PDF files stored in my own webpage, which I know that open and read well with other web browsers. I've also read the Help area of Safari, but it gave no useful clue to solve this problem. I have two eMacs and this same problem happens in both computers, that is, I can't open any PDF file using Safari! Does anyone know how to do it? Please write me back to [email protected]
    Thanks,

eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Safari 1.3.1 and Acrobat Reader 7.0.7

I have already set the Desktop folder as the download destination. Safari simply does not put the PDF files there. Again, it asks me for the application to use, I choose AR 7.0.7, but then I get a blank window instead of the opened PDF file that I need to see. If anyboyd knows how to solve this, please let me know. Thanks.

  • Does anyone know why after upgrading to Mavericks, Safari will not display PDF files, is there a solution?

I cannot get Safari to display PDF files, it shows a blank screen with the comment that Safri has blocked PDF, however when you unblock it still does not show the PDF, I have had to rely on Firefox for this, which I find not too good. Any help very much appreciated.
