Safari 2.0.3 Fails To Access Secure Websites - How To Fix?
My company just upgraded the security on their websites. I cannot logon with Safari - "couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server." All Cookies, Plug-ins, Java, Java Script enabled. Tried deleting all cookies. No better. I am open to solutions. Firefox 1.5.0.3 works fine.
Mini G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4)
Welcome to Apple Discussions
If Firefox works, then it's probably not a Network issue. Some suggestions:
- Empty Cache in the Safari menu
- I suggest upgrading your system to 10.4.8 using the combo update. In turn, this will upgrade Safari to 2.0.4. I prefer using this upgrade route rather than the Software Update version. Remember to "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your HD.
- Just to be sure your system is up-to-date with all Apple software, run Software Update after the above is completed. If any further changes are warranted select those items. If any change, "repair permissions" again after the update is completed.

I just recently upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 and now the "lock" icon doesn't appear anywhere (I can find) when accessing secure websites. I haven't seen it once. It used to appear in the lower right corner of the screen. I also have Norton Internet Security.
Padlock is no longer part of Firefox; it was removed beginning in Firefox 4. The padlock shows that there is a secure connection but does not supply additional information. You could have made a typographical error and still have been connected to a secure connection. The padlock was replaced in Firefox 3 with the Site Identity Button. Familiarize yourself with the Site Identity Button at the left end of the Location Bar:

Reset Safari -- Now I Can No Longer Access Secure Sites Or iTunes Store.
Hi, A few days ago I reset Safari (I'm still not sure why... boredom??). Well, now I'm paying for it. Now I can't access secure sites (such as gmail, bank accounts, etc.). in Safari. When trying to access a secure site I get an error window that reads something along the lines of: "Safari can’t open the page because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server." Even more annoying, I can't access my account on iTunes or access the iTunes store. When trying to do so an error window pops up that reads: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The requested keychain was invalid. Open keychain access and run Keychain first aid, then try again."... Did all that. No help. Incidentally, all my keychains are now gone).
I tried accessing the secure sites through Firefox, which still works fine. But the iTunes problem persists no matter what.
Has anyone else been encountered these same problems or know what I need to do to fix them? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm stuck!
Thanks in advance!Still having this problem - is there no one out there who can help me? Surely someone must have had this happen before, no? You're all making me feel really stupid!!

Safari crashes when accessing secure websites
Hi, all you Discussion-eers!
I downloaded the new Safari for Windows Beta today, since I thought that it would be really neat to have the opportunity to actually use that nice web browser on a Windows platform.
It can successfully launch and load a good deal of websites for me.
What isn't working quite so well, however, is accessing secure pages, like logging into the Discussions, or logging into accounts on other websites.
When I attempt to access any secure website, it either:
- Promptly closes the browser on its own, without any errors
- "Encounters a problem and needs to close"
- Completely freezes up while loading the page, to the point where I cannot close the program by clicking the "x" on the program window. (I must end it through Task Manager)
- Displays this error message when attempting to load the webpage.
I have tried completely deleting all program/installer files off the computer (hopefully, at least), and installing another copy of SafariSetup, as well as restarting, to no avail.
Any ideas as to what's causing this? I currently use IE (Internet Explorer) 6 for accessing websites.
If you need, I'd be happy to provide any other info about my issue that might help.
Thanks in advance!
-KyleneGood to know it's not just me than. Started happening to me at the same time as everyone else too. Did the usual: messed about with Safaris preferences files, reset Safari, repaired permissions, installed latest (for my system) security update 2007-008, restarted and then repaired permissions again and voila.....still crashing.
Old youtube pages in Safrari history still loaded but couldn't navigate from them.
Using Firefox now which seems to be fine.
Would be intersting to know what's happened though. -
Having trouble accessing secure websites...
This is the error message I keep getting everytime I try to access a secure website:
Safari cant open the page
https://www.audible.com/adbl/site/login.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes”
because it couldnt establish a secure connection to the server www.audible.com.
It seemed to happen overnight and the only thing I can remember doing was upgrading iTunes and Quicktime the other day. Help! I've tried looking in the discussion boards and am at the point where I'm going to bring my Powerbook G4 into the Mac Genius' at my local store. Any suggestions? Is this even a safari thing?Michael,
I have had the same problem last week and found the my solution here in Apple Disscusions somewhere. I should probably start bookmarking because I can never seem to find the discussion again for later reference.
My solution:
Trash the file named "System.Keychain" in Library/Keychains/ folder;
Restart your computer.
Your computer will generate a new System.Keychain. Worked for me.
Hope this works for you. -
Safari 3.11 Doesn't work with secure websites
I regularly used the last version of Safari to access secure web pages on a Citrix server, but the new version can't log in. Now I find that the Kaiser Permanente website will no longer accept my username and password (this is www.kp.org). I know this website works, because I now access it -- and Citrix -- through Firefox.
Is there a setting in Safari 3.11 that I can change to resolve these incompatibilities?
Thanks.
MarkHellomarke:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
I rather suspect that something is amiss with the Citrix connection/server. I assume that you are on some kind of network as Citrix is not exactly +"home computing"+ technology. Try talking to your network people. Incidentally, in a previous life I had a similar problem and the network folks solved it - how, I do not know.

No longer able to access secure website at work
For the last year I have enjoyed uninterrupted access to a secure website hosted at work. I use Java Secure access manager to do so. Suddenly I can no longer access the site from home on any of my 3 computers. I contacted IT they dialed in and were unable to get me going. I am left to believe that Verizon has changed something. All 3 computers no luck, that is too much of a coincidence. Any Suggestions?

I don't think that VZ is a culprit here. If you can access banks, credit cards, Amazon. gmail -- secure protocol (SSL and/or TLS -- whatever you decided to use in your browser and servers support) then you have access to secured web sites. Unless you are using your own secure protocols. I would think that someone tighten security at your work. But try to traceroute your servers. BTW if all your three machines are at home network and behind NAT then from the point of view of VA -- it's one machine. -
When I try to access a site I use for my work from my home setup, BT Hub, the application fails to run and I get the following screen appearing.
However, when I perform exactly the same procedure and process using another company's network and changing nothing on my laptop, the product works as it should, i.e. I do not get the above message.
It implies that there is something blocking access to the site I need access to within the BT setup. I have tried to open the settings I have in respect to the BT Router as far as I can but I am still unable to gain access to the application.
Can someone shed some light as to where the problem may lay? I have added the application as a valid exception by explicitly adding it to the list but to no avail. At the moment I am stuck so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Alan. Welcome to the forums.
Are you supposed to be able to access the site within the "internet", or is it an "intranet" access only via a work server (perhaps logged in via VPN) ?
Or are you expecting to receive a 404 type no website page or server not found error message ?

Safari unable to display icons when accessing a website hosted on Jboss 7.x
I have a toolbar that consists of around 10 images(.png 16x16). Each of them not exceeding a size of 5kb. I am using GWT 2.4 framework. My question is, when I deploy the war in Jetty 8, the images seem to load just fine on Safari in ipad version 6.1.3. But when I deploy the same war in JBoss AS 7.x, the images don't seem to load at all and I can see a loading indicator continuously displayed on the top left corner in the ipad.
Is there a way to find out why this is happenning. I have even configured the mime type in web.xml file. Can I connect to safari in ipad from mac and debug? AFAIK, that couldn't be done. Or am I mistaken? Please let me know.Hi, after trying for a bit I found the solution. The key is to use ClientBundle for image resource instead of specifying the images directly in your code. It is cleaner. Works perfectly in Jboss now! Still, I feel this should'nt have arised in the first place. When the same code works in chrome, why should safari be any different? Food for thought.

I am trying to download E-Book management software (Calibre) on to my IPAD but Safari says download failed as Safari cannot download this file. Why is this. I would have thought this was a fairly straight forward procedure?
If you are talking about Calibre, there is no iOS version. There's an OSX version for Mac computers which are not the same as iPads. Any and all software that can run on the iPad can only be installed from the App Store.
You cannot download anything thorugh Safari and try to install it, it just doesn't work that way.
Addiionally as has been already been pointed out Calibre installs on your Computer, not the iPad. You manage ebooks on the Computer. -
Just installed Firefox for my boss, and ran into something I've not seen before. When trying to access our private camera system, that uses specific ports, I got this message: "This address is restricted - This address uses a network port which is normally used for purposes other than Web browsing. Firefox has canceled the request for your protection."
Cannot find a setting in Firefox to correct this problem. Please help.Hello,
Can you please check if either of these links help in the resolution of the issue

Beware the Security Update - How I fixed my WIFI problem and a question
First of all I have read the "Latest Update from 21 January is A Disaster" thread and I basically agree with Andrew is Stuck so please don't feel the need repeat any of the stuff about it is not a bug in the update etc etc and I should have a Super Duper clone to hand etc etc . I have read that stuff. You are probably right but they should write on the Security Update info panel - "Be Careful this could really ruin your day".
I am ****** off and stressed out and I need to rant and I am not looking for that kind of lecture - even if it is partially or wholly true. I need to feel positive by warning people the way I wish I had been warned!
NB I am near the end of a professional dance tour as Musical Director running music on Logic on my MBP and it has been working fantastic - not a single glitch in 6 weeks. I would never upgrade my OS or Logic in the middle of job like this BUT Security Updates have always seem like something you should install because they will protect the Mac or protect against any new viruses etc. I have never had a problem with them before. (THAT ATTITUDE WILL NOW CHANGE!!!)
This update has caused a lot of people a lot of problems (check out this forum) and it has caused me more real world problems than anything I have downloaded and installed from anywhere in the last 3 years. Thus it has nothing to do with Security!!! HOw any people does a Security Uodate have to goose before it becomes an unsatisfactory Security Update?
This security update suddenly stopped my WIFI working and put me in a real hole.
(I am sure you don't care but I have a meeting tomorrow morning that I needed to do 3 hours of prep for including looking at VIDEO online. And the Security Update has just put paid to that. )
After 3 hours I have just got WIfi back- here's how:
I repaired permissions twice with Disk Utility - no joy. I found I could get online when I booted in Safe Mode (and I could get online with my Iphone on the same WIFi setup) so I knew it was not the router - though I did switch the router on and off a few times,
When I initially ran Repair permissions there was loads of things needing repair. I ran it again and 2 remained:
usr/share/derby it keeps trying to repair
and one of the package contents of the ARDAgent.app (System>Library>CoreServices>RemoteManagement>ARDAgent.app>Contents>MacOS>ARDAg ent) had a warning attached that it in the Disk Utility Repair Permissions report that it had been modified.
So I restored ARDAgent.app from a Time Machine Back up and replaced the offending file when in Safe Mode (Restart with Shift held down). - using Ctrl Click to open the ARDAgent.app package contents.
This seemed to sort it all out for me.
I guess people need to look in their Disk Utility Repair Permissions reports and see if any esoteric system files have been goosed by the update and see if they can get them back - although if you don't know what you are doing this could make things worse......
Anyway I DO have questions:
If this hadn't of worked:
1) Would reinstalling Snow Leopard from disks have upset my preferences, installs of Logic and Audio drivers and 3rd party application installs and the rest?
- the main stressor when this happens is not trying to lose the whole day.
2) Is there a way of just restoring the System from a Time Machine Backup or a SuperDuper clone or do you have to restore the whole state of the entire Hard Drive?
Best
Tommy Banana
PS I feel better now. Thanks for listening. The fact that you saw no glitches while running Logic before applying the update means almost nothing because that uses only a small subset of system resources. Far more significant is that Safe Mode restored some missing functionality: because it disables non-essential items like user fonts, third party drivers, & so on, it points to problems in those areas.
Equally significant, the fact that there are relatively few reports of post-update problems among the several million Snow Leopard users points away from the update itself as the cause of your problems.
Separate & apart from that, it so happens that I'm a sound engineer/system designer/board operator with nearly 40 years of professional touring experience. FWIW, I never have & never will update the software of any system I must rely on professionally (whether it is running on a Mac, a PC, or dedicated hardware) unless & until I can thoroughly test it first and I have a trustworthy backup/recursion strategy to fall back on in case of problems.
I strongly suggest you learn from your unpleasant experience & do the same. I have had far fewer problems with Macs than with PC's, but nothing is 100% reliable to begin with. Changing the OS software part way through the tour is just asking for trouble, no matter how reliable that has been in the past. Even if the budget allows for nothing better than a stack of burned CD's & a couple of consumer grade CD players, no professional tour can afford to be without some fallback strategy in place. That should be self-evident & require no warning from Apple or anybody else.
