Safari 2.0.4 freezes...I get the rainbow pinwheel often.

Any suggestions to get out of Safari freeze-up jail? It happens frequently, and it does not matter if there are other tabs or windows up. Safari locks up and I have to quit the browser often, which is frustrating if I am in the middle of something important.
Our IT provider is wireless (NTD out of Wisconsin). Firefox works fine most of the time. It has locked up only twice.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Mary
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Here's a list of suggested steps you can take to improve Safari's performance:
Sluggishness in Safari can be caused by any number of problems, involving either the Preferences, Cache, Cookies, Bookmarks, History, Site Icons or 3rd party items.
First via the Finder>Home>Library: move the com.apple.safari.plist file found via the Finder>User Library>Preferences folder to the desktop and restart Safari. If Safari functions without problem, you'll need to reset your custom preferences in Safari, as well as any special settings in the Edit (spelling) or View menu (custom icons, status bar, etc.) If no change, move the file back to its original location, replacing the newly created file.
Next, move to the desktop the Safari folder (which holds bookmarks, history, etc), and restart Safari. This folder is found in the same User Library accessed for the preference file. Restart Safari. If no relief, move the folder back, replacing the newly created one. If it does work, then you'll need to move one file at a time back to its original location, restarting Safari each time to isolate the problem file. When Safari stalls, you found the culprit.
If the above doesn't work, go to the User Library>Caches>Safari and move that file to the desktop. Same routine as the previous step (restart Safari, etc). If no go, move the folder back etc.
The last one to try is the Cookies.plist file found in your User Library>Cookies folder. Same routine.
Post back.

  • My Safari isn't responding and I keep getting the rainbow pinwheel. Why is this happening?

I'll open Safari and go to my usual pages, however now when I open it and it's trying to load my homepage, it doesn't really load and then I get the rainbow pinwheel and it just does that until I get fed up and try to close the window. I have tried quitting Safrai in an attempt to kind of re-boot it, but that doesn't do much and instead I have to force quit because the application isn't responding. I have chrome now and this seems to be working perfectly fine, however I like how my Safrai is setup and I don't want to waste time customizing any new browsers.
Also, I have gone through and eliminated cookies and tried to cleam up my safrai but that didn't really do anything.
    Any suggestions?

Quit the application. Force quit if necessary.
Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data

  • When I type in my password into the login screen I get the rainbow pinwheel and then the screen turns gray and goes back to account selection... How do I access my account?

Today I was doing my chemistry homework when all of a sudden my mid 2011 MacBook pro running Lion 10.7.4 started going very very VERY slowly to a point where it was unusable. I restarted my computer and went to type in my password. When I did this, the computer recognized the password and began to boot yet the pinwheel came on and the screen turned gray and went back to the account selection screen. It continues to do this everytime I enter my password and I can no longer access my account. How do I fix this.

You can take some of the steps here, #4, #5 or even trying a #18
Step by Step to fix your Mac
but I suspect your going to first have to create a data recovery drive
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
to get your data off the machine,
then do a #20 to eliminate the bad sectors as that's why your getting the "pinwheel" it's getting a delay reading from the drive, right when your trying to log in too, what a bad spot for it to happen.

  • I'm getting the rainbow wheel when I try tp pen in internet page (Safari). The page half loads then appears to freeze with the rianbow wheel.  I get the same result when I try to stream a movie from NETFLIX.  Freezes up rather than plays (after loading).

I get the rainbow wheel when I try to open an internet page. It loads halfway, then freezes, with the rainbow wheel whirring around. Smae thing happens when I try to stream a movie on Netflix.  The movie loads, then the wheel shows up and the screen freezes.  Same thing when I try a DVD, it takes the disc, but won't play when I hit on PLAY.
I am repair permissions, and all that I can do, but I am a novice.  Any help would be greatly appreciated because I spend big bucks and drive 40 miles to get Apple help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
    You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the  Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically.  With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future.

  • I am having a real problem running Safari. It is super slow and I am getting the rainbow circle a lot. Can anyone help me? Please. It is only two years old.

I am having a real problem with my MacBook Pro. While I am using Safari it is running really slowly and I am getting the rainbow circle a lot. Can someone give me some suggestions? I have no idea why it is so slow and it will not open any webpages.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • I can no longer access Safari on my ipad. I get the error:the operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory. Help please!

I am not able to access Safari on my ipad. I get the error message: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory. Can anyone help please??

    Try this first.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work, reboot the iPad - or quit all apps and restart.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.

  • When I have documents open and I walk away for a few minutes, when I come back and try to resume working, my computer seems to freeze up and the little pinwheel starts spinning and I literally have to unplug my computer to get it out of this frozen state.

When I have documents open and I walk away for a few minutes, when I come back and resume working, my computer freezes up and the little pinwheel starts spinning.  I literally have to unplug it to get out of this frozen state.  This has been getting progressively worse over the past three months.  I recently took it into the Genius Bar and they could not find anything wrong.  They told me to add more memory, which I did.  However, the problem persists. Do you know why my computer would freeze up after the screen has had no activity for just a few minutes?  My screen saver is set for an hour so I know this is not the problem.

What kind of documents? Office? iWork? Text Edit? What version?
What settings do you have in regards to power saver and/or screen saver?
For these kinds of system glitches I always recommend installing and running Onyx 'Automation'. If that does not work you should reinstall the offending software, if possible.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • What is the rainbow pinwheel and how do I get rid if it?

What is the rainbow pinwheel and how can I stop it from freezing a video?

    os version?
application that you're using to watch the video?
    what format is the video?

  • I get the rainbow wheel of death literally every two minutes

I get the rainbow wheel of death so often. I wiped my hard drive clean two weeks ago to get rid of the problem. It was okay for about two days, now it's back and worse than ever. It takes me almost 10 minutes to open up a microsoft word document. I can't do any work on it when this happens.

Adequate Backups must be your top priority, as your Boot drive may be failing.
Next on the list is to buy a new drive and install your favorite version of Mac OS X on it. Once you are running from a dependable drive, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to debug any remaining problems (if any) and determine whether that old drive can be saved.

  • My macbook pro is slow and gets the loading wheel often - Tried everything, been recommended to start using time machine

Hey, my macbook pro started going slow out of nowhere and gets the loading wheel often, I can't close it without the charger attached otherwise it heats up real bad. I've been told to get a hard drive and back up everything through time machine and then reinstall it but wouldn't that just carry over whatever problem I'm having. I've tried everything that I've found on here like going into disk utility and repairing anything broken, I checked my memory and all that and it was good but I deleted anything unnecessary and put all my music and movies onto an external hard drive.

If you don't already have backups, and you have any data that you want to keep, shut down the computer immediately and don't turn it on again until you have at least one external hard drive to use for backing up. Then see below.
