Safari 3.0.4 in 10.5.6 combo, why not 3.2.1 (and what else is missing)?

Due to problems with 10.5.7 update I reinstalled Leopard from DVD (via Archive and Install, with 'Preserve Users and Network Setting' selected), then downloaded and installed 10.5.6 combo.
I ran a Software Update check and installed the items listed (except 10.5.7). Ran another Software Update check and installed 2 more items (but not 10.5.7). A third Software Update check listed 10.5.7 as the only update (I didn't install it).
I checked whether my new system had retained the new 3.2.3 version of Safari (that came with the 10.5.7 update) or reverted to 3.2.1. I was surprised to discover the version was 3.0.4. I downloaded and (successfully) installed 3.2.1 from Apple, but 3.0.4 remained the version on my new system. I checked in Previous Systems Folder (on HD) and discovered, there, 3.2.3 was the version, but the Last Modified date/time coincided with the time that I installed 3.2.1 (just a few minutes earlier); it was a standard installation (to HD).
I moved Previous Systems Folder to Trash (to make that folder unavailable) and downloaded and installed Safari 3.2.1 again. This time it updated on the new system.
How many other 'things' are not up-to-date but Software Update can't recognize this?
I presume that Software Update check is allowing for the newest version of Safari to be updated via 10.5.7, but why was 3.0.4 on my new system rather than 3.2.1. 3.2.1 was released prior to 10.5.6 update. Thanks to my paper records I can identify that originally I downloaded 3.2.1 on 28 Nov 08 and 10.5.6 on 3 Jan 09.
Apple suggests that I can't be sure all previously downloaded items (such as security updates) are on my new system because, similar to Safari, updates included in 10.5.7 will "hide" missing items from being individually itemized by Software Update. Installing 10.5.7 is not an option at present due to incompatibility issues with my modem.
Apple phone support suggests I will need to manually find every update that I made to my previous system (details available thanks to my paper record) via the search bar at apple/downloads. Are they for real? Try searching for Safari 3.2.1 download? It took me ages to find (more like stumble upon) it.
Any suggestions/comments?

Downgrading via Archive and install is notoriously unreliable. It is much safer to simply retrieve your backup you made before you installed the update after an erase and install. Of course you make at least two backups. Selective file recovery may be in order, such as found in migrating from PowerPC to Intel Macs:

  • "Activity window" in Safari no longer works to download YouTube videos. Why not? Workaround?

For years I have used Apple's recommended standard technique whenever I wanted to download a Flash video embedded in a YouTube page to my hard drive:
    - Open a YouTube page and click on the video's "play" button to get it started;
    - Press command-option-A to then open up Safari's "Activity Window" which lists all the components of the page;
    - Find on the list the component for the loading Flash video, which is usually much larger (measured in MB rather than KB) than all the other components, and also is usually still in the process of loading, so it's easy to spot;
    - Double-click the component's name on the list in the Activity Window, and voila, the video downloads to my hard drive.
This "trick" is described everywhere as THE standard way to download YouTube videos (and similar page components); and I have used it successfully for many years.
HOWEVER, sometime very recently (not sure when, exactly -- a few weeks or months ago) YouTube has changed the way its pages are coded, so that this technique no longer works. When I open the Activity Window, instead of seeing one large loading video file that's easily identifiable, I see a whole series of large files, all exactly 1.7mb big (no matter how large the file size of the actual video in question is), and they constantly increase in number -- at first there are two such files, but over the seconds and minutes more and more appear. Furthermore, many files with no named size are constantly loading and then disappearing. And here's the whole point: I've tried double-clicking on ALL of these files, dozens of ways on dozens of YouTube pages, and none of the are the video file I seek and none of them cause the file to  download to my hard drive.
If I click on one the mysterious 1.7mb components, I indeed get a ".flv" downloaded to my hard drive, but it's not actually a Flash video; clicking on its downloaded file icon just brings up a blank box or an error message saying that it's not really a video file at all. I think it's some sort of "decoy" file or something to do with streaming Flash code.
To see what I mean, just go to YouTube, load any random video page, and then open Safari's Activity WIndow and try to download the video that way.
This happens on an iMac running Safari 5.1 on OSX 10.6.8, and also on a MacBook Pro running Safari 5.0.2  on OSX 10.6.5, and on a few other new-ish Macs I tested it out on, but failed to note their version numbers.
I'm presuming that this problem is not specific to my computer, but is caused by the way that YouTube altered the background code for their pages. I don't know if the glitch is an intentional attempt by YouTube to prevent downloads, or if it is an accidental "bug" of the new code. Either way:
How can I fix the problem? Is there some other lesser-known built-in way for Safari/Mac to download the new kind of YouTube videos? Or is there some reliable freeware or shareware or plug-in or extension or whatever for Safari that would enable YouTube downloading?
I tried a freeware program called "Evom" that was highly touted, but it too was thwarted by the new YouTube code and failed to extract any videos from the YouTube page, even though that's what the application was designed to do.
As a side note, I will say that I also have (though rarely use) FireFox for Mac, and the "Unplug" plug-in installed on it, and that ALSO "broke" recently and no longer has the capacity to recognize or download YouTube videos, even though previously it worked fine. This is why I think the issue is not specific to my set-up or computer, but is due to a change in YouTube's underlying code.)
Any help with an explanation, solution or workaround would be much appreciated (by me and by millions of others who I assume are facing the same problem!).

    Carolyn:
I just now did exactly as you recommended. Result? No change.
Even after trashing the files and restarting and everything else, the Activity Window and YouTube behave exactly as they did before.
(I had actually previously tried something very similar to your recommendation, and it didn't have any effect then either.)
In case it's helpful, here's an example of what one of the mystery components that load endlessly in the Activity Window is listed as:

  • My Macbook Pro has trouble loading websites in Safari and Firefox.  I have already erased history. Why can this be? And what can I do about it?

I have been having trouble.  Some websites I have accessed before are not loading correctly.  Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't load. Sometimes they load, but you only see a list of links.  I am somewhat confused because I have never had any problems with my Macs before.  Why could this be? What can I do about it?

  • I have an original iPad and when I try to login on Yahoo through Safari it will not log me in. What could be the problem?

My original iPad will not log me into Yahoo through Safari. It's been this way for one week. I can access Yahoo on my PC with no problem so I think the problem is my iPad or Safari.

Your description of the behavior  of the ipad1 during a login attempt is more precise than mine, it is the exactly as my ipad1 reacts and supposedly as all other iPad1 will behave. This could be solved either by apple with an update of the safari browser for ipad1. I do not think that apple will do that. Also yahoo could undo the change of the login procedure which they recently made and which is incompatible do the ipad1s safari browser. They hardly will do that either if not be urged by lots of ipad1 users.
!!!!  SO SEND COMPLAINS TO YAHOO, PHONE THE HOTLINE ETC  !!!!!!
Otherwise you have to buy a new iPad or to change the email provider.

  • When a Safari download is interrupted, I get the message "You do not have permission to access the requested resource" when I try to restart it.

I have had this issue with my Macbook Pro ever since I bought it in November.  If I start downloading a file with Safari, and the download gets interrupted, I am unable to resume downloading from the point where it was interrupted.  Clicking on "resume downloading" button in the downloads list works fine it I do it immediately after the download is interrupted, but if a little time has elapsed (as little as a few minutes) since the interruption it will not let me resume the download, and I get the message in the downloads list "You do not have permission to access the requested resource."  I have repaired my permissions...I don't know what else to do.  Here's my system configuration:
    Macbook Pro Mid-2012 Retina Display
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB RAM
    System 10.8.2
I just have to editorialize for a moment:  My old Macbook Pro and my Mac Pro both worked great with Snow Leopard, but since upgrading the Mac Pro to Mountain Lion and buying the new Macbook I have had all kinds of issues like this.  Tech support at Panic software, that I contacted because of issues with some of their software, told me that I was only one of many with Mountain Lion issues, but here we're over half a year since the release of 10.8 and we're only on system 10.8.2.  Is anybody at Apple actually trying to fix the issues?
Thanks for anything you can tell me!

Safari problem:  when I switch back into safari from another application, the menu bar comes up but no tabs or windows.  What's going on?  Just started yesterday.  I have found a workaround: when I Command Tab back to safari, I hit command T to open a new tab and Command W to close it, and my other tabs are visible.

PS:  I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
As for which OS X is installed.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.
v10.6 Snow Leopard v10.7 Lion  v10.8 Mountain Lion
It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.

Downloaded 5.1.1 to my iphone. Now, Safari will not connect to my server. Can not download web pages and many of my apps. Email seems to be ok. iphone running slow and sluggish.  I have read several other users have experienced the same problem. Any solutions?

Basic troubleshooting steps oultlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
You need to go through all steps in succession until your problem is solved.  If going through ALL these steps fails to resolve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

What model MacBook Pro and what version OSX do you have?
Safari is download as an update to OSX.
It maybe yo have to update OSX version to get the latest Safari version.
SOme model Macs can be updated to latest version of Safari/OSX since the hardware does not support it.

  • I'm using a Mac OS X (10.9.2) Mtn. Lion (converted to Mavericks) and use Safari for Gmail, my long time email program. Lately I almost cannot use Gmail at all. "Missing Files", "Errors", etc, etc, and can only use it in Basic HTML. HELP!

I have no idea if the problem is with Safari or with the Gmail files.  I get the msg. "Error' over and over and often "you may have entered the address wrong" (when I KNOW I HAVE NOT) and other msgs. which I do not remember at this time. I'm having to use ''Basic HTML" and that seems to be OK - tho it is insufficient. The "Mail" app in OS X works fine but I cannot tolerate the format and must solve this dilemma. Any suggestions?  I've read the "related issues" section and have not found anything closely related to this issue and would appreciate any suggestions.

There seems to be a few bugs with iCloud Mail at times, so send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Safari setting on iPad "Open New Tabs in Background" is not working

A couple of weeks ago, I decided that I wanted to see the tab bar in Safari, on my iPad, just like on my MacBook.
    So, I went to...
    Settings >> Safari
...and I turned OFF the setting "Open New Tabs in Background".
Then, the tab bar appeared and every new page that I opened displayed across the tab bar in a new tab, just like I wanted.
Today, I devised that I liked the pages in the background a lot better and I changed the setting to ON.
PROBLEM: the Tab Bar remains, no matter how many pages are open.
What's worse is that, in the menu bar, next to the bookmark and box-arrow icon, the numbered icon is missing (the icon that displays the number of the pages that you have open).
How do I get that icon back and the Tab Bar to disappear?

    Looks like some confusion here.
Safari on an iPad running iOS 6 as your signature implies does not open separate pages and the box with the number of open pages is not there. This was how Safari on an iPad worked in an earlier version of the iOS but safari presently only supports tabs.
When you select to turn on Open Pages in the Background, select a link and opening it in a new page will create a new tab and the link will load there BUT Safari on your iPad will remain on the original page. You'll need to tap the ba to see the new page. Turning off Open Pages in the Background will let Safari switch to the new tab immediately.
An iPhone, however, retains the old feature of separate windows and there is a box with a number at the bottom of the screen letting your know how many windows you have open.
