Safari 3.1.2 for Tiger 10.4.11
I want to change my current home page. But when I go to preferences there is no general tab to click. All I that I get is a window with Safari Security preferences. How do I find the general tab to change my home page
At the top right hand corner is a small oval button. Click that and all the other sections will be revealed.
This is true of almost all system windows.

Safari 3.1.2 for Tiger
*Hello we are back on the same old problem*
Its a shame that us Apple Mac Customers who use the stand-alone-download-option for Safari 3.1.2 for Tiger (via a PC have to come and politely beg the kind help of other forum users to kindly use their expertise and locate the Tiger version and not the windows version that keeps cropping up - due to the browser setting apple have applied !!)
Could some kind person please post me a link to the tiger version (that wont turn in to a windows version)
Many thanks in advance, a lovely green star awaits you !

Safari for Tiger
EDIT it doesn't appear to like that direct link, but redirects to another short page offering me a choice between Tiger and Leopard versions again. See what it does for you—hopefully it won't enforce a Windows solution again!

Safari is officially dead on tiger
Well. after searching a lot of forums, and trying everything I can find , I am ready to declare that Apple has broken Safari as far as use on 10.4.11 is concerned. I have 5 older Macs that could not upgrade to 10.5. I am using the latest issue of Safari for Tiger on all of them and have installed all the updates that Apple had for those machines. Safari crashes every time on all of them. You can start it once, go to one or two web sites, and then stop it and it is okay. But try and rally use it and it becomes more and more unstable until it will after about 10 web sites, stop going to new links, and then you have to force quit it. You cannot even go to Safari, Quit Safari on the top menu bar. I will hang trying to quit itself. Going to force quit and quiting the Safari (not responding) is the only way to get it to stop.
This all started when the version of Safari just 1 older for Tiger would not longer allow you to check your e-mail on Mobile Me. You could log in but as it started to show the mail browser it would hang and never show the messages. Updating fixed that so I did it to all the older 10.4.11 machines. Now that is all you can do with Safari in a reliable fashion.
Thank god for Firefox. It has reluctantly become my browser of necessity on all 10.4.11 machines. Safari for 10.5 works great on all my other 6 machines using 10.5.x Wish it would still work on 10.4.11. I miss it.jlefevre1 wrote:
What is cocktail. What are maintence scripts?
Hello,
Cocktail is a maintenance program for Mac OS X.
Though I myself don't use it, I use Socks from MKD software: http://www.mkdsoftware.com/socks/
I've run nearly every maintenance program out there not nearly as successfully as Socks.
I recommend you look into a maintenance program for your Mac OS X system. All systems need a bit of maintenance here and there.
Caches all sorts need cleaning periodically, permissions need repairing, and other maintenance scripts should be run to optimize system performance and keep errors to a minimum.

Different builds (and features) of Safari 3.04 for Tiger and Leopard!?
Hi,
My bank uses a Java applet to do secure authentication. The functionality depends on LiveConnect (an old browser feature).
And now it seems that Safari 3.04 on Tiger supports LiveConnect but Safari 3.04 on Leopard does not.
The build info is
Leopard (from 10.5.1)
Version 3.0.4 (5523.10)
Tiger (from 10.4.11)
Version 3.0.4 (523.12)
On the release notes for Safari 3.04 beta for Windows, LiveConnect is explicitly mentioned but I have seen no info for the Mac version.
This is somewhat frustrating. I will try the Tiger Safari on my MBP to see what happens.
Any info?
/Anders HolmHi Mark,
I looked at my YourUsername/Library/Input Managers and saw 1PasswdIM but have not heard anyone else giving that as a problem. Could this be the issue?
I must admit I haven't heard of it causing problems so far as well (and can't see an immediate connection to your problem) but I would try moving 1PasswdIM onto your Desktop to temporarily disable it. Restart Safari to make it pick up this change.
I can't imagine deleting all of those just to get my Safari bookmarks to work.
Me neither. Sorry, I forgot lots of other apps add temporary information into there as well. Some of the Safari helpers add information here as well - skip the Application Support folders for the moment though.
/Library/Input Managers, I have Chax, Ecamm, and SIMBL (whatever that is).
SIMBL is used by many developers to allow Safari input managers to work correctly. As before, move the contents of this folder to your Desktop and restart Safari.
With both the Input Managers empty, does Safari handle the bookmarks correctly now?
Let us know how you get on. -
Safari for Tiger will not open
I downloaded the latest Safari for Tiger 3.1 package for Mac OSX 10.4.11. After instlling the first time, it was not sucessful, and now my old 3.0 will not open, nor will the package for the new 3.1.
I have rebooted, used my disk utility to check for any problems, and tried many times. I cannot use any Safari at this time.
Please help.If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta, and now Safari 3.1. If Safari 3.1 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 and 3.1 use a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.1.
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2008-002. Like all security updates, this requires a restart and a permission repair.
As Leopard also uses Safari 3.0.4, much of the above may well also apply to Leopard, but is not guaranteed. Moreover:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Safari in Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
• /Library/InputManagers
• ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later). -
Hi ALL,
How is it possible that Safari 4.0.2 in Tiger 10.4.11 has NOT the ability to see the *TOP SITES*?
Or is there something I missing ?

Getting Safari To Work/OS X Tiger
Hi, I use a Mac G4; run MacOS 9.2.2 and Tiger 10.4.9. I liked the way Internet Explorer 5.1.7 worked whenever you wanted to download files. I liked the contexual menu in IE 5.1.7, that allowed you to 'Download Link To Disk,' and 'Download Image to Disk.'
For the life of me, I cannot get Safari (Tiger 10.4.9) to do the above mentioned functions found in IE 5.1.7. I can't even download mpeg and jpeg files while using Safari.
I must be doing something wrong while using Safari.
Internet Explorer for OS X seems to crash as not to. That's why I want to use the more stable Safari. Any suggestions?
AngelThe easiest way to get a jpeg off a web site is to just click on it, hold down the mouse button and drag it to your Desktop. If you right click/control click on an image you'll get a drop down menu with several options, including one to save the image to your default download location.
If you have a movie playing in the Quicktime Player in the Safari window there can be a problem getting the Save option to appear from the drop down menu there (unless you have Quicktime Pro). The easy work around is to go to the Safari menu item Window, select Activity and find the URL for the movie and then hold down the Option key and double click the URL. It will download the item to your default download location. Or you can Option double click on the link to the movie in the web page that points to the movie, if one is available.

Will there be a Security Update 2009-006 for Tiger PPC
Apple released Security Update 2009-006 for Leopard today, but not for Tiger.
Is there going to be any more support and updates for Tiger, since Snow Leopard came out?
ThanksKlaus1 wrote:

Chicken!
Hahahahah, yeah....
Actually, I just tried to reply to your message using Safari 4.0.4 and repeatedly got this error:
Request Timeout
The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.
Reference #2.4da21160.1258046993.0
It did that with another page too, but is loading others fine. I am wondering if there is an issue. I may have to downgrade to 3 again, if that is possible.
I got used to using Firefox because I just upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 and had to use Safari 2.x, which doesn't work so well with the web anymore. -
Safari 2.0 crashing after Tiger installed.
I recently installed Tiger OS X 10.4 then did the Software Update to 10.4.8 Combo.
Issues:
I had downloaded and installed an IP blocker and "list manager" called PeerGuardian2 which, while it provided security, was so bad it even blocked Google and amazon. Perhaps I wasn't using it correctly and that's another issue. Anyway I experienced problems with the mouse and erractic behavior on the browser which showed up on the screen as "bits and frags", then usually followed by a frozen mouse and system crash.
My first solution:
I deleted PeerGuardian2 and did a reinstall of Tiger and reinstalled the update.
So far so good. Until today I had another crash using Safari. And after reinstalling Tiger, I noticed logging online with Safari was very slow to no go. But once I got it going, it loaded normally the next time. Then later on I had another crash.
I am currently using Firefox to start this thread, which, sofar, runs smoothly.
If anyone has had any experiences like the above and have solutions, pertaining to Safari 2.0 crashes, I'd like to read them. I am investigating the possibiltiy that my hardware may be too old, or slow. That I need to install more RAM, and maybe a fast processor upgrade card from Sonnet. I'm running my G4 with the processor it came with that ran on system OS 9. Until the Panther and Tiger releases it worked fine. I haven't needed that much memory or speed, but with new OS rollouts, I may now.
G4 AGP 400MHz 44GB 512MB - iMac G3 400MHz 10GB 320MB Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hawaiian_Starman,
It would appear that the Knowledge Base article trumps the comments in the article that I cited, and due to my limited indirect knowledge of the repair process I will defer to Apple.
but, I also remain confused...What repairing permissions does and whether you should do it, by Dan Frakes says: When you use Apple’s Installer utility to install software (such as Mac OS X itself or an OS X update), the installation package (the .pkg file you double-click to begin installation, or that Software Update downloads in the background for an automatic installation) generally leaves behind a receipt—a smaller Mac OS X package that includes information about every file installed, including the permissions each file should have. This receipt is placed in /Library/Receipts. When you run the Repair Disk Permissions function, it examines the receipts in the /Library/Receipts directory of the disk being repaired...
Thanks for your Safari expertise.

Quicktime 7.4.5 for Tiger?
Hi all,
I suffered the dreaded jerky playback with the QT7.5 "upgrade", so I reverted to 7.4.1 using Pacifist.
Problem is iTunes now says I need QT 7.4.5 to watch videos I have purchased, and if I open those videos in QT 7.4.1, apart from just getting a grey screen, I am told that I need to re-authorise my computer to play this content, even though if I do that in iTunes I am told my machine is already authorised.
Two questions:
1. I could not find a QT 7.4.5 on the Apple site for Tiger - only for Leopard. I clearly recall my QT was auto-updated to 7.4.5 a few months back so what is the URL to download the right version?
2. How do I re-authorise my iTunes content so that I can play it (or will getting 7.4.5 fix it?
Thanks muchly...It is possible that something in either your pre-existing setup or your method of installing updates, are the root causes of whatever problems you are having with QT 7.5 particularly with choppy playback. Out of date plug-ins and add-ons could also be playing a part. Some users have found choppy playback to be associated with improperly loaded plug-ins and add-ons from third party vendors as well as those included by Apple with prior versions of Quicktime.
Third-party add-ons include DivX, Flip4Mac, or FLV components, while the included plug-ins are AppleIntermediateCodec.component, and AppleMPEG2Codec.component. The files for these are located in the root library, therefore a faulty component will load improperly for all users, resulting in choppy playback even when a user creates a new account. Some may need updating or just reinstalling to work with QT 7.5.
You should therefore:
Remove and re-add all quicktime components and plug-ins.
Navigate to /Library/QuickTime/
Move all plug-in ".component" files from the folder (to the Desktop, for instance)
Launch QuickTime and quit it again
Place the ".component" files back in the QuickTime library folder
Launch QuickTime again, and the choppiness should be better.
A few more things to try but in each case first close all applications and repair permissions.
1 Try opening then closing GarageBand, or launching then quitting the "Audio MIDI Setup" application located in Applications/Utilities. Failing that, go back to Audio MIDI Setup, and under the Audio Devices tab, make sure the Audio Output Format is 44100.0 2ch-16bit.
Restart your Mac.
2 Go to the Library on your main hard disk and find the Internet Plug-Ins folder. Try removing the following files:
QuickTime plugin.plugin
Quicktime plugin.webplugin
Restart your Mac.
Re-install the Quicktime 7.5 update
Go to Home/Library/Receipts and delete the file Quicktime 7.5 pkg.
Download from the Download page on the Apple site the correct version of Quicktime 7.5 for your Mac.
Install it and restart your Mac. Repair permissions.
3 If still no luck, it is time to look carefully at your plug-ins and add-ons. The safest way is to download and re-install all of them. The ones you need in order to see and hear virtually everything the web has to offer are:
RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of all recent Security Updates.
(N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
If none of the foregoing worked, then you should consider and archive and install before repeating all of the above.
Note that most users experiencing these problems have reported that the Quicktime update 7.5.5, and the security update 2008-006, cured the problem.
Lack of free space on your hard disk can also cause 'choppy playback'. -
Bbc I-Player & Adobe flash for Tiger
Bbc iplayer now requires update to 10.1 but my Tiger system Mac G5 wont install Adobe flash archived version on list. Can someone please tell me the correct procedure to install iplayer for Tiger software ? Many Thanks.
If you want the last version of Flash Player for PPC Macs, you need to go here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. The first one on the list, Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
But this may still not help with BBC iPlayer, which seems now to require an Intel Mac (it always did, but PPC Macs worked anyway!). It could also have something to do with Safari. I can no longer watch Flash videos on the BBC website or on iPlayer with Safari, only when I use TenFourFox (the PPC version of Firefox), despite the fact that they both use the same version of Flash Player. -
If 10.4.8 is the latest update for Tiger and 10.5 is Leopard, What happens for us Tiger folks as far as updates? Do we get a 10.4.9??? Then what...do we just fade away? Thanks, Bill
OK, now that we know you're really serious about that:
Very likely there'll be a 10.4.9 update before 10.5 comes out, but that doesn't mean it's the last update ever to Tiger. There will still be plenty of updates for different parts of the system (i.e. Safari, Security Updates, etc.). There will just not be any additional "system update" which is basically a large collection of these single updates.

Issues with Safari 3.0.1 for windows
Issues with Safari 3.0.1 for windows (at work):
Lenovo T60 with intel core duo T7200 @2.00Ghz plus additional monitor (Lenovo ThinkVision) in extended desktop mode running Windows XP Pro 2002, SP2
1. Taskbar is configured to autohide: when Safari is the top (active) window, it remains on top. If the taskbar pops up, it does so behind the Safari window, because I cannot see it.
2. If an open Safari window is dragged to the external (secondary) monitor, then maximized, it disappears to the side. It is not closed. I can still find it via Alt-tab or in the task bar and can, by right-clicking ‘Move’ from the taskbar use the arrow keys to move the window back into place. Clicking to reduce the window, then re-maximizing leads to the window disappearing to the side again.
3. In general my impression is that this does not function at a ‘beta’ level, but more of an ‘alpha’ level. Still very buggy.

iMacIntel Duo 2Gh Mac OS X (10.4.7) 1G-RAM, 250vRAMThis is a beta...thats why they give you the option to report probs via the bug icon. Since you are having these probs try and report them, I am not sure if apple has the time to scan these forums to try and find the big probs that people are having. So unless you report bugs, (and wait until the final realease) then they might never get noticed and or fixed.

I bought a new macbook air pre loaded with Lion. while setting up the system, I just input the user name, and didn't set any password.
But now when I wanna download stuff off safari, it asks me for password. The user name appears (the same one which I set) but it keeps on asking me the password which I never set. Can some one please help me. Thanks!I did it like that, but for the purpose of not having to type my password every time since I'm installing a lot of programs, and yes, it asks for the password, but do not type anything and just click "ok" or "install", since you haven't set a password it should let you go through. I guess it asks for the "password" just to let you know it will install something, but just click ok.
I will set up a password once i have install everything in System Preferences/Users & Groups
Hope it helps... -
