Safari 3.1.2 to next upgrade

I'm using Safari 3.1.2.
I downloaded 3.2, but did not get a chance to install it. Looks like 3.2.1 is out now.
I'll install it and see how it works and report back. If it doesn't work, I have the 3.1.2 installation file if I need to reinstall... here goes!

That was fast. I selected "Safari for Windows" and it kept trying to download the second option "Safari + QuickTime". I tried it again and it incorrectly tried downloading "Safari + QuickTime".
I'll wait until Apple fixes the download page...

  • A suggestion for the next upgrade.

When I want to separate my iPod I of course select the "eject" on the screen. However there are times when I just want to eject and keep the iPod connected (recharging, seeing what's on the iPod since the new upgrade took that away, listen to my tunes that won't skip). If I want to reconnect though I have to physically remove the cable and reattach. For the next upgrade couldn’t you have an icon at the top that shows the status of the iPod, say a pair of plugs connected and in blue, then when disconnected they’re separate and in yellow, so that if I wanted to reconnect I can just press the icon and it reconnects through software? Thanks.

Google seem to have decided in the last week or so that Safari 5.x, which is the newest Safari version available for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is "not supported" any more, even though there are many reasons for staying with these OS X versions.
Try this (at your own risk, but it works for me), as it seems to remove the message by tricking Gmail into thinking your Safari version is newer:
    -- Quit Safari
-- Locate the following file (location depends on your OS X version):
    OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit2.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.pl ist
OS X 10.5 Leopard and older:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.plist
-- Drag the file to your Mac's desktop to make a copy. Also make a safe copy somewhere else eg your Documents folder, as if you lose or mess up the file Safari will not launch at all. Having a backup browser is also recommended.
-- Double-click it to open it in TextEdit
-- Locate the CFBundleVersion value (the last line in the file that has numbers in it) and increment the second digit of it to the required version of Safari e.g. Safari 6 now seems to be the minimum version that Google support so change the second number from 5 to 6 (don't change anything else, only the change the second number). The value is different depending on your OS X version but as an example, for Snow Leopard 6534.59.10 becomes 6634.59.10
-- Drag the file back from the desktop to its original location, choose the option to replace the old version, and enter your password when prompted.
-- Run a permissions repair in Disk Utility to set the permissions in the file back to what they should be (not required, but good practice).
-- Launch Safari and test Gmail.

  • I currently have OS X version 10.5.8 what is my next upgrade?

I currently have Mac OS X version 10.5.8 - intel processor what should my next upgrade be?  I need to upgrade in order to accommodate my new ipod nano.

If you have a PPC iMac 10.5.8 is as far as you can do. If you have an Intel iMac:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Safari Crashes on Opening after Lion upgrade!

I just upgraded to Lion, and I try to open Safari, but it crashes before it loads my homepage!
I had recently set my default browser to Chrome in Snow Leopard the other day pre-upgrade, could that have something to do with it?

I'm using SL and found the perfect solution. 1) Follow oh_okay 's instructions, 2) download and reinstall Lastpass, 3) Restart Safari 5.1 and all should work fine. With this lastest update to Safari Lastpass functions a bit differently, having it's own tool bar with the option to hide. You have to click on the grey star, which stays grey, when logged in. There may be a tweek for that, which I haven't gotten to yet.

I've actually just found a solution.
As it turns out, LastPass was causing my crashes, too.
I had to find my SIMBL folder (~Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/LastPass.bundle) and remove the LastPass plugin.
After that, all was well. Not sure if I need to reinstall LastPass now or just pay for (what I've heard is the far superior) 1Password.

  • Why do I get constant Game Center notifications when I'm playing games? Seriously, if there isn't an easy way to turn off gamecenter, I'll be switching to a Microsoft phone at my next upgrade. I don't want this garbage popping up while I play my games.

Why do I get constant Game Center notifications when I'm playing games? Seriously, if there isn't an easy way to turn off these notifications, I'll be switching to a Microsoft phone at my next upgrade. I don't want this garbage popping up while I play my games. What a worthless, obnoxious piece of junk. Apple, stop ignoring your customers!

How is Apple ignoring their customers, exactly?  If you don't want Game Center, why did you sign into it?
Sign out, launch an enabled game.  Game Center pops up, close it, launch the game again, it pops up, close it again.
Now it doesn't pop up any longer.
    All as documented.

Also, can they be bought and downloaded via the net or do I have to get the physical Disc again?

If your Mac qualifies, you can upgrade directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain LIon.
Your Mac must be one of the following models:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
From here >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
If you have v10.6.8 installed, you should have access to the App Store when you can purchase and download Mountain Lion.
Check your Applications folder for the App Store.
If your Mac does not meet Mountain Lion requirements, you may be able to upgrade to v10.7 Lion.
Read here > OS X Lion - Technical Specifications
Lion v10.7 is no longer available from the App Store but you can purchase from Apple directly:  800-767-2775

  • Hi, some web site no longer support Safari 5.1 is there an upgrade I can get or use?

Hi, some web site no longer support Safari 5.1 is there an upgrade I can get or use?

You need to upgrade the computer's OS or switch browsers. If desired, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Mavericks. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

I have OS 10 v.10.5.8.  Is my next upgrade Snow Leopard?

If your profile is correct that you have a PowerBook which has a PowerPC processor and not an Intel processor then OS 10 v10.5.8 is the highest you can run.
