Safari 3.1 and Security update on PowerPC G5 dual 2.5 now super slow HELP !

I installed the safari update and security update today and now my Mac is running Slower then it ever has. I have a PowerPC G5 Dual 2.5 liquid cooled 2.5gigs of ram. I ran the hardware test disk and all checked out fine I really have no idea what to do and this machine is running like a hog. I would appreciate any help anyone might have for me.

If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.1.
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2008-002. Like all security updates, this requires a restart and a permission repair.
As Leopard also uses Safari 3.1, much of the above may well also apply to Leopard, but is not guaranteed. Moreover:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Safari in Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
• /Library/InputManagers
• ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Additionally try this:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions.
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:

  • Start up problems after Safari 3.1 and Security update

Updated safari and security update last night.
Safari downloaded and installed but there was an error downloading or installing the security update, I forgot.
After I restarted everything booted up fine, but was stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen.
Did a fsck and zap the pram, still stuck.
Today I tried booting up in safe mode, stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
Then I tried booting up from an external firewire dvd drive. Repaired permissions, repaired the disk, but it is still stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen. Help please...
    Thank you

Ok i had a similar problem, with all the recent updates for Leopard, including the 10.5.2 combo update... the 12" PowerBook G4 kept getting stuck on the grey apple and spinning wheel... if it managed to get past this it would get stuck on the blue screen!!!
The way i got around this, after trying all these other tips was: Archived & Installed 10.5; restarted, waited; downloaded 10.5.2 Combo update, installed; restarted, waited; waited; waited; after getting back to desktop, restarted, waited; then ran Software Update only installing one at a time, and after each install, restarted, waited; when all Software updates completed, proceeded with iLife updates etc... It took a while (still quicker than the 3 days of failed installs and updates) with a lot of waiting on the blue screen (5-20mins) but we got there in the end. Disks where checked with Leopard Disk Utility before and after, permissions where checked before and after completing all installs, also with a DW 4.1 optimization. Also note worthy is the RAM was upgraded from the initial 256Mb (!!!) with an extra Gb.

  • Beach Balls and freezes after installing Safari 3.1 and security update

    Hi,
I just recently installed the safari 3.1 update and the security update. My machine is an iMac 2.4 GHz with 10.5.2. Prior to this, the machine only had one freeze (had to power off) which happened a about a month back. Since the update, 2 days ago, the machine seems to show the beach ball more often. On one specific occasion (happened when my son was using it), the Chess game was running, and the mouse cursor turned into a beach ball and everything froze - can only move the mouse cursor/beach ball but nothing else responded. Even hitting the caps lock key took minutes before the caps lock light came on. Me being a windows user for a long time, I was blindly trying to find the keyboard equivalent of ctrl-alt-del to pull up a process list of some kind so that I can kill the offending app. But was not successful, hence I had to power off.
On another occasion, and this time, it happened to me - the beach ball came up as I was using safari. I could use other stuff in the OS, but any time I brought the cursor over safari, it would turn into a beach ball. After waiting a few minutes and clicking away on the safari window, the beach ball turned into a finger cursor when I clicked on the http address window - and safari started to work like normal again.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had experiences similar to this and if there are any steps I can take to prevent this again.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
Did you perform both updates at the same time? I usually recommend doing them one-at-a-time, so if anything happens you know which update caused the problem.
I especially never do a system update with any other update. I always do that one last, and wait for the dust to settle by reading this board first.
You should run DU and check the HD and repair permissions. That's a start.

  • Unable to Reboot After Latest Apple Updates (SA-2011-06-23-1 and Security Update 2011-004)

    Hi All,
After applying today's updates (06/23/2011) in APPLE-SA-2011-06-23-1 Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Security Update 2011-004, my MacBook will no longer boot. Prior to updating, the MacBook workked perfectly (except for the occasional error entry in the system and kernel log). The MackBook model number is A1278, with a RAM upgrade (4 GB).
When booting in NORMAL mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 50 seconds. The device never shows the blue background or login window. It simply shuts down like the power was pulled.
When booting in SAFE mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 1 minute 30 seconds. The blue background is shown and quickly transitions to the login windows. About 45 seconds after the login window is shown, the machine shuts down like the power was pulled.
On the few occassions I logged in to take advantage of the 45 second safe mode window (before shutdown), I was *not* able to copy off my log files (in /log/var) to a thumb drive because the computer would not mount the USB device.
When I peeked at the system's log file, I caught the tail end of "signature validation failed" for a bunch of hardware - from video to audio. I can only peek because the computer will shutdown before I have an opportunity to study anything in detail. The failed verifications may or may not be related to the shutdown - signature verfication might be disabled in safe mode; I simply don't know.
It seems the world's most advanced operating system [tm] is performing the world's most epic failure. Any ideas to get this brick working again would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's what I've found:
    (1) I cannot run Disk Utility because I don't have my install disk handy
    (2) I cannot run Repair Permissions because Apple does not make a separate ISO available to fix their mistakes
    (3) There does not appear to be a wat to back out updates (ie, no Add/Remove Programs)
I was able to boot into safe mode and perform:
        > sudo bash
        $ chmod -R root /
Amazingly, the command ran to completion. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. As soon as some spare cycles were available (interesting indeed!), the machine shutdown.
+1 to Apple engineers for creating a broken patch
+1 to Apple quality assurance for letting the junk out the door
+1 to Apple, for not offering an ISO to fix a broken installation
+1 to Steve, who has managed to keep his anti-trust lock on the hardware and broken software
    Great job, Apple

  • Airport problems after 8/12 airport and security update

My MacBook Pro which had been working flawlessly since I got it last year received the airport and security updates distributed today. After the reboot my airport turns itself off after a few minutes and will not come back on and the computer seems to be running hotter than usual. Booting from a recent clone of the drive without the updates did not fix the problem and the card turned itself off a few minutes after the reboot and will not come back on.
Anyone having similar problems after the update?

Does your problem occur only when unplugged. If so, then maybe this update is for you: http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro. Check it out, but use your own judgment in installing; not much info is provided.

  • PHP/MySQL updates within OS X S and Security updates?

    Hey All,
Does anyone know of a link that will provide any info about PHP, PHP plug-in, or MySQL updates that are included in the Server OS or security updates, or any other software updates? This way I won't have to read through all of Apple's support articles for all OS and security updates.

  • HT5281 Update to Lion 10.7.4 and Security update 02/2012 upped Ruby load to the ceiling

After updating our home Mac mini server to Lion 10.7.4 and Security update 02/2012, with the machine now just sitting idle, no user logged-in, network cable unplugged, Ruby is generating 96% load on the CPU at all times, with processor temperature running near its limit and fans blowing full-blast.
Switching off the Wiki server cut the load back to normal, Ruby process went behind the curtain, and things appear back to normal, but of course this is no cure, it's just a temporary fix-up.
Any other user is experiencing anything similar?
Any possible solution in form of a next update coming soon, for the graphic-shell-only illiterate users like me?

Yesterday I applied the latest Lion Server Update to my Mac Mini Server (not sure about the update's number).
I also experienced the "fans blowing full-blast" symptom for no apparent reason (no heavy apps running - Mac almost idle- and CPU, HDD, Network monitors flatlining). As well as a minor issue on the screen-sharing side: it didn't display the initial grey-background login page, but after I logged in blindly it was fine.
The update did a restart but no power-off, so I thought the issues might occur because the hardware hadn't properly reset (yep, I had to use Windows at work...)
Dunno if that was the cause, but after a shutdown, power-off and restart, the symptoms disappeared. Will see... so far so good.

    Hi and welcome......
Check to make sure there is enough free space on the startup disk for updates to be installed. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*
If disk space isn't the issue, login to another user account on your Mac. If Safari crashes there, launch Disk Utility /Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left the select the FirstAid tab. Click: Verify. If Disk Utility reports that the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions here. You will need your install disc..
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart

  • Browser compatibility with 10.6.8 and security update

Hi. I'm running Snow Leopard (v10.6.8) on a mid-2010 quad-core Mac Pro. According to Apple Support, Safari v5.1.10 (which I am running) is the recommended version for this OS. It works great except that every so often I get a warning about Safari not being able to verify the identity of the website "name" and I have to flush the DNS Cache using a Terminal command which I found online. When I was connected to the internet using Airport, the warning was popping up frequently but after switching to an ethernet connection it's much less of an issue. Is this something I'll just have to live with or is there anything else I can do?
My next question concerns the Security Update 2013-004 that Software Update displays as being an available update. I've read a little about it and it seems to apply mostly to the newer Mac operating systems. Should I just ignore it or will it be of any benefit to me? I don't want to download and install it if I don't really need it.
Lastly, is there a particular version of Firefox that anyone would recommend for 10.6.8? I think Firefox 18 was the first version that would work w/ Snow Leopard. How much higher should I go?

What is your objection to not simply upgrading OS X to Mavericks?
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • HT202447 Do I re-enable Java plug-in in Safari after Flashback Removal Security update.

    I received this update:
Flashback Removal Security update.  After installing the following info came up.
This update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware. If the Flashback malware is found, a dialog will notify you that malware was removed. In some cases, the update may need to restart your computer in order to completely remove the Flashback malware.
To improve the security of your Mac, this update also disables the Java plug-in in Safari. For instructions on how to re-enable it, please visit:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5241.
My question is:  Do I leave disabled or do I re-enable it?  Not sure what is the right thing to do.

Leave it as disabled unless and until you need Java for a particular web site. Very few use it. Leave Java Script enabled as this is something completely different.

  • Epson PictureMate Shows "Stopped" After Last Java and Security Updates

    Hi,
After installing the following updates ("Final Cut Pro Update" (5.1.3), "Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 5" (5.0), "Security Update 2007-002 (PowerPC)" (1.0), "Security Update 2007-001" (1.0) and "Daylight Saving Time Update" (1.0)). My Epson PictureMate started showing the dreaded "Printer Stopped" issue noted y many other on many other printers.
I've tried the Printer Setup Utility "reset printing system", removing and adding back the printer etc. The Epson Photo 820 still works fine. The PictureMate will also work fine from any other account. The account I'm using it in is not an admin acocunt, but a Standard account. The other family accounts can also use the printer, so the issue is local to my 1 main user.
I've downloaded and tried the "PSR" utility from www.fixamac.com. The utility doesn't find anything wrong, but it does complain about CUPS permissions (as did Apple's Disk Utility). I'm thinking the resetting of the printer system deletes a number of directories and when they are recreated they seem to come back with permissions the system (and PSR) doesn't like. Both utilities repair and don't find the issues again, but no joy on the printing.
I've also dumped the preferences with no change.
Since other users can print fine, I'm assuming CUPS and the printer drivers are OK. Any idea what other secret files in my User folder could be messed up and affecting the single printer?
    Thanks in advance.

There are a LOT of Java based exploits, so even 3.6.11 isn't fully patched, there are cross-platform exploits, and bots running wild.
Did you also remove your cache folders?
Firefox: I use 4.0 betas, NoScript I feel is a must.
    From MacIntouch:
Security software vendors warn of an active, Java-based Trojan Horse that affects Mac users. Disabling Java in your web brower is a highly-recommended counter-measure. Also flushing DNS cache.

Mozilla group urged its users to immediately:
    Disable JavaScript in Firefox.

  • Safari hangs since last security update

Safari has gotten very slow and hangs frequently since the last Apple Security Update. Quitting and reopening helps, but then it progressively slows again. Firefox works fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Move your Safari preference file to the desktop and restart Safari. Please let me know if there is any change with loading web pages. If no change, move the preference file back to its original location. If there is improvement, then the pref. file was corrupted. The new preference file will be set to Apple's default values. Make changes as warranted.

  • Safari Problems Since last Security Update

Every since the last Security Update in September Safari 1.3.1 has some strange issues for me. As others have previously described in these forums, Safari will crash on certain websites but with no consistency. Sometimes those sites work and other times they don't. At other times, an infrequently visited site will crash. It's almost like it's at random but I don't know what causes it.
On a related note, some web ads that have motion, I don't know if it's flash (latest installed) or java, 'bounce" up and down when you scroll down the page by either clicking on the scroll bar and scrolling down or by clicking on the up/down arrows. I didn't notice this prior to the security update.
I do all the usual maintenance. I did notice though that when clearing the java cache in 1.4.2 I can't quit by the menu (grayed out) or Command q, only by clicking on the red dot. Anybody know what's going on? Thanks!

    Hello Tooky,
I know it has been a while since you posted this topic on the Discussions board, but I am experiencing the same problem with the Safari browser. I have noticed that web ads have motion as well, and I am not sure whether this is intentional or an error.
However, I did discover something. I reinstalled Quicktime 6 (I had been running QT 7) and the motion in the web ads stopped. Then, just to test this out, I upgraded to QT 7 again, and the motion in the web ads returned. I think it has something to do with QT 7.
I am running 10.3.9, and I don't know whether people are experiencing this issue in 10.4. You mentioned in your posting that this issue has been discussed--is there any way you could direct me to one of the discussions? Have you discovered a workaround? I'm having trouble finding other threads on this topic.
Thank you very much, and take care.

  • Safari certificate issues after security update

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with Safari not recognizing certificates.  This issue seems to have started after the most recent security update (I'm using OS 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.9).  I just got this software update last week, but its possible it could have been around longer than that.
Here's the problem:  Some websites that I have been visiting for years with no problem all of a sudden are giving me certificate issues.  When I try to go to these sites, I get a dialog box saying "Unable to display this certificate".  If I click cancel, the site doesn't load and see a blank page.  If I click continue, every single Safari tab I have open (usually lots) tries to reload (super annoying).  The tab experiencing the certificate issue continues to fail with the same dialog two or three more times before giving up and displaying a blank page.  Checking the "always trust these certificates" box does not change the results.
My attempts to solve the problem: I've reset and relaunched Safari, with no change.  I've made sure the cpu clock is synced (at least as displayed in the upper right corner of the screen).  I went into the Keychain and changed all the certificates with custom security settings to use the system default security settings.  I've read through lengthy discussions of similar issues here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20152546?searchText=Safari%20certificate%2 0issues%20after%20security%20update#20152546) and elsewhere on the discussion boards.
Any suggestions of what could be going on here?  Any more information I can provide to help diagnose the issue?
    Thanks very much,
    Adrian

I later found that I couldn't even Quit the Safari Application by the drop down menu    .... Safari>Quit Safari.... as that was also grayed out and non-functioning. Likewise the 'cmd' and 'Q' keys clicked simultaneously didn't quit the application either.  I finally used the 'Force Quit' function from the '' drop down menu which did work.
Opening Safari later ... all seems to be working fine. So apparently just a restart of the Safari app was all it took to reconfigure everything!
Nice to have it working as before....
