Safari 3.1 in Apple software update?

Why am I suddenly getting Safari in Apple Software Update, instead of just iTunes and Quicktime?
I have no version of Safari installed on any of my Windows Systems and certainly do not appreciate having to uncheck Safari everytime Apple Software Update checks for Updates.
If this is an attempt by Apple to "force feed" us Safari, it is not at all appreciated, as I for one am quite content with Firefox.

You have the "ignore selected updates" feature in the Tool menu.
That is not good enough. It only works for the current version of the ignored software. The next version of Safari and/or iTunes will trigger the updater again despite having ignored the previous version. That is no good!
What's more, it only ignores it for the current user. If as a system admin I ignore the update, the user will still be notified about it when they login. That's also no good!
Disabling Apple Software update is not an option, either. I want users to be notified of security updates for Quicktime and, if they install it, iTunes.
If I rely on the built-in quicktime updater, my users will be shown a link to download iTunes+Quicktime by default. This is still no good! And even if they correctly choose the Quicktime only link, they will get Apple Software Update which will very soon offer updates for software they have not installed. It is an endless cycle of opting out over and over again.
My Windows users don't know what Safari is, don't know they don't have it, and don't know they do not need or want to install it's "update". They just accept the defaults. This is what I expect them to do.
This is simply unethical behavior by Apple to have the security updater install NEW software. A user should have to opt-in to install NEW software instead of being tricked into thinking it's an update they need for something they already have.
Granted, Apple isn't the only one doing this. SUN tries to jam google toolbar down users' throats using their JAVA automatic updater. You have to opt-out EVERY TIME!
I must insist on an opt-in default rather than an opt-out default; especially on software updates. The only way to do this with apple software is to not opt-in to Quicktime to begin with. So I will be removing it from my system images from now on. I'll let my users opt-in to Apple's harassment if they want to.

  • Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google

Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google, an error message comes up saying safari cannot connect to the server.  Can anyone help me with this please?

    Hi Joshua ..
Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.

  • How to opt out of Apple Software Update's Safari installation

I do not have Safari installed on my computer, and I have no interest in installing it or switching to it. However, the Apple Software Updater displays Safari as a selected option every time it runs. I can unselect the option to install Safari, but I don't see any way to remove Safari from the list entirely so that Software Update doesn't keep pestering me about installing Safari every few days. Surely there must be some way to opt out of installing Safari short of uninstalling Software Update and never using it again?

That answer really does not deserve a "solved" star, as we get nagged again for every update of Safari. The ignore "trick" is IMHO merely an inadequate workaround for a nuisance that should not exist.
ASU should UPDATE not shove software I or rather, my userbase does not have installed, down our throats.
Apple should at least have the decency to NOT have Safari Pre-checked in ASU. Yes, M$ has new software in Wondows Update as well (e.g. Silverlight), but at least it's an opt-in update, while Apple force-feeds us Safari which I find beyond annoying.
If M$ would do the same with the next version if IE on Macs, Mac users would scream so loud you would be able to hear it on the ISS.

  • Apple software update and safari not working

Apple software update says "could not connect verify a connection with the app store". Safari wont even display google. Both apps open up initially.

  • Apple Software Update Not Working

I cannot get Apple Software Update to work on my Windows XP Pro system. It simply says that new software was found but it did not specify which Apple software needs to be updated. I am using iTunes, QuickTime, and Safari. Any help appreciated!

The latest version numbers (at the time I'm making this post) are:
    iTunes 10.6.3.25
    QuickTime 7.7.2
    Safari 5.1.7
If you're behind on any of those, try updating using installers downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

  • Safari 6.0 5, iCal, Software update, Dashboard have crash reports

    Hallo!
Safari 6.0 5, iCal, Software update, Dashboard crashing on my MacBook Pro.
    I have Mac Os X v10.7.5.
Should I post here all crash reports?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello ...
If Safari, iCal, Software Update, and Dashboard are all crashing, there's no need to post multiple crash reports. The startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permisions)
If repairs are necessary, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. Let go of the keys when you see the spinning progress indicator. You will see a window with the built-in utilities to repair the disk and reinstall OS X using OS X Recovery
Apple does recommend a high speed broadband internet connection for OS X Recovery.

  • Why two QuickTimes with Apple Software Update in Vista under Boot Camp?

Running Apple software update in BootCamped Vista, I see selection for 1) QuickTime, 2) Safari, 3) iTunes & QuickTime.
Items 1) and 3) are by default checked for download. Why would I want to download QuickTime twice??

    Hi!
Funny you should mention that! Same thing happened to me yesterday, I was downloading Boot camp 2.1 and there were the other three downloads you mentioned. I downloaded them anyway. I now have Safari 3.2.1 (etc.) on my Windows partition. Why did I do that ? To be frank I do not know!! Now you have all three on the Windows partition.

  • Apple Software Update for Windows (2.1) has an invalid signature

When I run ASU and it wants to install ASU 2.1 I get the error that it has an invalid signature. It was suggested to use Tools and first download it and then install it, but I manage 350 computers and am trying to automate some of this.
Does any one have a suggestion?
I wonder if Apple will issue a patch, or if there is some amiss with my current ASU.
    Jane

Thanks for the replies, but what I am hoping for is a solution.
Even though I asked, you never said if you have an ASU 2.0.0.21 ... so this solution runs the risk of being irrelevant to your situation. (It applies to the issue of ASU 2.0.0.21 on an XP PC returning an "invalid signature" message when trying to download an ASU 2.1.0.101.)
If that's what you've got here, then usually a software installer bundle from Apple which contains a higher version of ASU than the 2.0.0.21 will install on the PC in question.
(Avoid using the BonJour for Windows 1.0.4 standalone installer just at the moment, as a precaution. Last time I checked, about 20 minutes ago, that still contained an ASU 2.0.0.21, and that won't get you any further forward than you currently are ... assuming that you've currently got an ASU 2.0.0.21 in place.)
So download and install another Apple installer bundle. Here's a link through to the QuickTime Standalone installer, although the Safari for Windows or iTunes installer would also work:
Latest Quicktime Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention iTunes
That should, as part of the install, update your ASU to version 2.1.0.101. To check on that, launch ASU ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"), go "Help > About Apple Software Update" and check the version number. If you're now at ASU 2.1.0.101, you're past the problem with ASU 2.0.0.21 returning an 'Invalid signature" message when trying to install an ASU 2.1.0.101 (assuming that's the particular problem you were actually experiencing).
You can then uninstall QuickTime for Windows (or Safari for Windows, or iTunes and QuickTime and Apple Mobile Device Support, depending on what installer you used to update your ASU version) through your Add/Remove programs control panel.

  • Apple software update still flacky

okay I'm running bootcamp 1.4 through osx 10.4.11 ! I'm running XP pro. Today I dl's the latest apple software update 2.0.2 to windows and it still is not working properly. I get these signiture errors If I go through the panel. I ended up having to dl both QT and Safari through the apple dl page. I checked QT updated to see what would happen after updating and QT crashed while looking for updates. OSX is sp elegant.

I tried from the website also. Still will not work!!

  • Running 10.4.11 I can not find the outdated plugins that Firefox keeps telling me I need. Apple Software Update doesn't help with this

I'm running 10.4.11 and am unable to find the plugin updates that Firefox keeps telling me I need on an annoying little popup window that keeps coming up whenever I download a page using Firefox. The pluin updates I need are for Quicktime, Java  to name a few. Is Apple not supplying any more plugin update because I'm using an old version of Mac OSX? The firefox plugin page tells me that Apple supppies their own plugins but I don't see any when I use Apple Software Update. Any suggestions?

Do what others do and get TenFourFox - the equivalent of the latest Firefox but built especially for PPC: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
    To enable plug-ins:
Put about:config in TenFourFox's address bar and hit return
Put tenfourfox.plugins in the search box and hit return
Click tenfourfox.plugins.enabled to set it to true
    Restart TenFourFox
TenFourFox will now use the Safari Flash plug-in

  • Installed latest Apple software updates, now my mail accounts will not open. No settings, addresses, passwords, etc. were changed.  Help!

This morning I downloaded the latest Apple software updates.  After the computer restarted, I cannot send/receive emails through Mail.  I can, however, send emails through the Yahoo webpage.  Nothing (user names, email address, password, etc.) was changed after the download/installation.  I can get on the internet and my iPad works just fine, just not Mail.

That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!
Just in case you missed some of the files:
Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
    /Library/Application Support/Conduit
    /Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
    /Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
    /Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
    /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle

I upgraded to I-Tunes 7.4.2 and that went great. But I was also offered an Apple Software Update for Windows which would not install. • What are "Apple software updates"? Where is "iTunes & QuickTime" update?

When starting iTunes today, I got the box asking if I wanted to install 10.4. I clicked yes then got the big box that I've seen many times. It usually has MobileMe, iTunes & QuickTime, and an offer to install Safari. Today, and recently, I haven't seen the "iTunes & QuickTime" update option; it's been replaced by something like "Apple software updates." Today it was version 2.... Previously, I haven't gone ahead with the "Apple software updates" because I don't know what this consists of and it looks suspicious to me. Today, I again quit instead of updating "Apple software."

    Thanks for the reply.
I've had iTunes since 2007 and don't recall "Apple software update" 'till recently. Perhaps the reason I've seen the message several times now, and again today, is that I've not installed it. It would then make sense to prompt me today before going ahead with the 10.4 update. Make sense to you?
Actually, from what I've seen on the forum today, I expect another iTunes update very soon, so I think I'll wait.
