Safari 3.2.1 (Tiger) Freezes w/OS 10.4.11

I can't seem to find anyone with this issue on the forum, but my safari once launched is fine, but when i try to navigate via bookmarks or typed in links, safari would freeze. I would have to force quit. I have all the latest updates, it work fine before I installed the latest safari (3.2.1). Is anyone else having a similar issue? I have to use Mozilla for the time being.

Hi,
Does Safari work when launched from another user account on the machine?
If you don't have another account, use System Preferences > Accounts > \[+\] to create one temporarily for testing.
If it works there, we know for sure the problem is isolated to your account and we can concentrate debugging there.

  • Safari 4.0.3 PPC  = FREEZES when I click on iTunes Store Links!!!

*EVERY TIME I click on iTunes Store Link in Safari 4.0.3 it FREEZES!*
If I Disable Plug-ins, then NO PROBLEM, but then I can't watch Flash Videos on FaceBook etc.
I've Re-Install Safari Several Times, and this problem went away Temporarily.
    I've Deleted This File
    file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Plug-ins.html
and Reinstalled Safari again - same thing - this problem went away Temporarily.
I am on Powerbook G4, 10.4.11, all latest updates!
This problem with clicking on iTunes Store Links does NOT exist in the latest version of Firefox 3.5.3.
    How do I fix this!?
My only, faintly remote SUSPECT is Audio Hijack Pro 2.83, which is NOT the latest version of that product, but I am using it cause it's Use Interface is much more conducive to my needs!
But still, how come only Safari 4.0.3 is effected?
Hope SOMEONE will get back to me about this....

    Success:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I clicked on Apple Care to call me. Within seconds my phone rang! A few minutes on Hold. A really nice guy read this Thread and confirmed that I probably should Download Security Update 2009-002 (Tiger PPC) http://support.apple.com/downloads/SecurityUpdate_2009_002__Tiger_PPC
The File Name was a bit unclear: Security Update 2009-002 (Tiger PPC) vs. Security Update 2009-002 (PowerPC)
After a quick discussion, I Download it and the File Name turned out to be identical to what I already had installed: Security Update 2009-002 (Tiger PPC). So, the difference in names, as seen at http://support.apple.com/downloads/SecurityUpdate_2009_002__Tiger_PPC was less than reassuring... But, then I looked at the Dates in Installed Updates in my System Preferences, and realized that I've installed Security Update 2009-002 (PowerPC) 8 minutes before installing Safari 3.2.3, since those updates were offered to my by the Software Updates!
The Apple Care guy though: maybe my Security Update 2009-002 (PowerPC) should have been installed after Safari?, or maybe it just got corrupted during the install?
Corrupted or not, that doesn't explain that I already have 2009-005 (PowerPC) which supposedly incorporates the previous updates, like this one, that Carolyn suggested -- Security Update 2009-002 (PowerPC).
So, after installing Security Update 2009-002 (PowerPC) and Restart a few minutes ago, I got *happy news* -- Success:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -- I clicked on various iTunes links in my Safari, and it launched iTunes Store perfectly! Then I used Audio Hijack Pro, cause it has a Plug-in, and it was worked fine + this Freeze problem didn't come back! I Restarted with my Test User -- Success:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , Restarted with my Main User - Success:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quit + Relaunched Safari several time - Success:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll give it a week, and if the problem doesn't come back, than it's definitely a - Success:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I
can check off "Yes, my question has been answered. " :)!
BTW, according to my Apple Care hero who held my hand though this "surgery", when he looked at this Thread, he said that Carolyn had to be from Apple, if she had that designation: From: Apple USA on her post... But, at this point, I am just happy that it appears that the problem has been solved!
Thank to everyone for your time, starting with Carolyn:)! This Apple Discussion Boards-Forum -- ROCKS:)! Makes me even a more proud Apple User:)!

  • What in God's name is it with Safari 4.0.3 Tiger and iTunes 9.0.1?

This concatenation of "maybe-it'll-work-THIS-time" software crudpacks has been the most time-wasting, anti-productivity experience I've had in 20 years of owning Macs. I now have iTunes 9.0.1 working, but I have no idea how I got it to happen. None of my THREE installs of iTunes 9.0.1 has included an "iTunes Media Folder," don't know why, but thank God. My latest joy has to do with the System Requirements Apple insists upon for iTunes 9.0.1 running on Tiger 10.4.11:
    iTunes 9.0.1/Safari 4.0.3 Tiger/Quicktime 7.6.4/Security Update (the latest one)
I have everything installed EXCEPT Safari 4.0.3 Tiger. Why? That's what I'm trying to find out.
FOUR times now I've downloaded -- from Apple's download site -- the dmg of Safari 4.0.3 Tiger. FOUR times I've gone through the entire install sequence with no error messages or glitches, FOUR times I've restarted to "finish installing the software, and FOUR times no Safari application or related files has shown up on my drive. Could someone explain this?

I'm terribly sorry to have taken up your valuable time, but many "Upgrades" install the entire program, whether a previous version was installed or not (just today, I upgraded Photogrid X, for which I have a license, WITHOUT a copy of the previous PhotoGridX anywhere on my drive. A miracle of modern science!). Many "Upgrades" that require a previously-installed version either tell you so in the documentation (Apple says NOTHING on their download page* about requiring a previous version of Safari), on the install splash screen, or at some point in the install process. Pretty stupid of me, but even more stupid (and arrogant) of Apple, who apparently operate on the belief that if you use a Mac, you use Safari. I loathe Safari, which has been a crippled browser from the get-go, in my opinion. In addition to that, even before the dreaded update, my example of Safari was locking up all over the place, and refusing to display, for instance, eBay photo galleries created in Vendio -- which is the image-hosting service I use. Why would I keep Safari on a limited-space notebook hard drive if I didn't use it? If Apple required it for the installation of the latest "upgrade, " why didn't they say so in their "requirements*" blurb?
No, "'FOUR times' does not count as troubleshooting facts, nor was it intended to do so. Losing a week in downtime isn't a troubleshooting fact, either, but that's hardly the point. To have a piece of software that can't install without a previous version being present, and not having a warning in the documentation, is an unnecessary waste of my time, and--I know I'm not the ONLY moron that uses a Mac -- the time of many other people.
*Apple's Safari 4.0.3 DL page REQUIREMENTS:
    Macintosh Requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 or Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Security Update 2009-002
Mac with an Intel processor or a Power PC G5, G4, or G3 processor and built-in FireWire®
    256MB of RAM
Top Sites and Cover Flow on Mac OS X Tiger require a Quartz-Extreme compatible video card.
Do YOU see anything in there about requiring a previous version of Safari to install?
Here's a deal -- next time you see a post from me, just ignore it. I'd hate for you to waste your time on a rant.
And OH YES, I realize you're volunteers here -- sometimes it's painfully obvious. Do you realize that MY time is valuable -- though obviously not nearly as valuable as yours?

  • After installing yosemite on my laptop, once I open the internet through Safari, it at times will freeze or discontinue working causing me to close the wifi and turn it back on then reload the internet page to get it to work again. How to fix please?

After installing yosemite on my laptop, once I open the internet through Safari, it at times will freeze or discontinue working causing me to close the wifi and turn it back on then reload the internet page to get it to work again.  Is there any way to fix this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1310 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1536 500 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

Safari has become unusable—it freezes, links are unclickable, then I get "Web pages are not responding..."
Safari has been my favorite browser for a long time. Nothing against the others but I have found it faster and better. Now I can really no longer use it. This has been going on and getting worse for atr least  few weeks. Anyone know why?

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
If any extensions are installed, disable them and test.

  • Tiger freezes when screensaver runs or any time during the work

    Hello everyone!
After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse (when screensaver is on, though, after I moved the mouse the screen would go blank). LaCie works great and I don't think the problem is in it.
Also, right before this started I'd installed the Mac OS X 10.4.6 update. May be that is the reason. I don't know. I did what is in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=487116
In particular, I re-installed Mac OS X 10.4.6 combo update - it won't work. I've done permissions repairment, disk repairment, etc. Disk didn't require any repairments.
I tried disconnecting LaCie it won't help as well. What else might be done before I re-install Mac OS X itself (which I really don't want to do).
    Regards,
    Sergei

Since you've restarted and hard reset, the next step is to restore it.  Make sure you have it backed up via iTunes and then setup as new.

  • Different builds (and features) of Safari 3.04 for Tiger and Leopard!?

    Hi,
My bank uses a Java applet to do secure authentication. The functionality depends on LiveConnect (an old browser feature).
And now it seems that Safari 3.04 on Tiger supports LiveConnect but Safari 3.04 on Leopard does not.
    The build info is
    Leopard (from 10.5.1)
    Version 3.0.4 (5523.10)
    Tiger (from 10.4.11)
    Version 3.0.4 (523.12)
On the release notes for Safari 3.04 beta for Windows, LiveConnect is explicitly mentioned but I have seen no info for the Mac version.
This is somewhat frustrating. I will try the Tiger Safari on my MBP to see what happens.
    Any info?
    /Anders Holm

    Hi Mark,
I looked at my YourUsername/Library/Input Managers and saw 1PasswdIM but have not heard anyone else giving that as a problem. Could this be the issue?
I must admit I haven't heard of it causing problems so far as well (and can't see an immediate connection to your problem) but I would try moving 1PasswdIM onto your Desktop to temporarily disable it. Restart Safari to make it pick up this change.
I can't imagine deleting all of those just to get my Safari bookmarks to work.
Me neither. Sorry, I forgot lots of other apps add temporary information into there as well. Some of the Safari helpers add information here as well - skip the Application Support folders for the moment though.
/Library/Input Managers, I have Chax, Ecamm, and SIMBL (whatever that is).
SIMBL is used by many developers to allow Safari input managers to work correctly. As before, move the contents of this folder to your Desktop and restart Safari.
With both the Input Managers empty, does Safari handle the bookmarks correctly now?
Let us know how you get on.

  • Tiger freezing on shutdown/USB issue?

    Hi,
I am running Tiger 10.4.6 on an iMac g3 4000mhz with 640mb ram. Suddenly, the iMac freezes on shutdown though the mouse pointer is on screen and can be moved. The only way to get the machine back on is to switch the unit off.
Another problem which could be linked is that my LaCie external USB drive does not mount on startup. When I run System Profile of disk utility, it takes and age to find it, and sees the drive (even though it's not mounted) and then does mount the volume.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be with this?
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi jameseyre1 and everyone!
I do have the similar problem, and no solution yet. After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse just like you do (not when screensaver is on, though)
LaCie mounted perfectly and works just great and it might be a coincedence. Anyway, maybe these two problems are related - we will be greatful for any thoughts. Thanx.

  • Safari 5.1.1 keeps freezing up and giving me the pinwheel.

Ok, I'll try and give as much information as possible.
Just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.2 a few weeks ago and Safari is really frustrating me.
I've spent some time trying to figure out exactly when and where the pinwheels/freezing start and I've come to the conclusion that there's no pattern to be seen.  Sometimes it'll happen within a minute of start-up, while sometimes it won't happen at all for hours.  Once it freezes however it gives me a popup that states the program isn't responding and that I must refresh each Safari window, etc.....
I've followed the following advice received in another thread to no avail:
Tried to see if a guest account would open and run Safari (It did) so I then moved on to the following.
Quit Safari and move the following items in your home folder to the Trash:
    Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
The Library folder is hidden in Lion. To get to it, hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar.
Try Safari again. If it still doesn’t work right, quit again and move the following file to the Desktop:
    Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then move the following items to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    Library/PubSub/Database
    Library/Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
    Still nothing.
Would LOVE some help without having to set up an appointment at an apple store!

Hi If you get an error message saying your flash is blocked by firewall or needs updating or similar and you just get the spinning colour wheel try this link
It takes you to Adobe which tells you which ver of flash player you have - you can then see if there is a later ver by clicking on the library and it automatically selects the correct version for you to download.
Worked a treat for me! Good Luck

Ps Don't forget to use a browser other than firefox or you will be there for days.

  • My Safari 5.1 Browser consistently freezes on my iMac with Intel. Help?

I need help. I am getting frustrated using my Safari browser. It keeps crashing on me - or rather - freezing up. I have re-installed the software, checked for updates. Everything is up to date.
Is there anybody who can offer me some help?

Might be a third party Safari add on causing Safari to freeze.
Troubleshooting help here >  Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If you have any Extensions installed in Safari / Preferences - Extensions, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Safari, Quicken Essentials, other apps freezing after installing Maveric

Okay, I installed OS X 10.9 when it first came out.  Then started having issues with apps freezing, like Safari, Quicken Essentials and other apps.   I noticed this only after installing Maverick.   The only time the freeze would go away, would be after re-starting.    Then, it seemed the app would freeze again ONLY after I have been away from the computer for a while (maybe screen saver mode causes this issue?).   After not being able to figure it out, I un-installed Maverick and went back with TimeMachine and stayed away from Maverick thinking the issue would get fixed and letting bugs go by.  I just re-installed Maverick a few days ago and the issue is still there.  So, before I un-intsall again, I figured I would check here for any fix or if anyone else was having the same issue.
Example would be, as soon as you try to open the app, it immediately freezes and you get the round twirling circle that goes on indefintely.    The only time it will work, is after you re-start and then you can open it up.  If I leave the computer un-attended for a few hours and then come back, freezing happens again.   Not all apps act this way.  FireFox seems to have no issues.
Anyone else having this issue and if so, have you found a resolution?

...  Do you recommend something else that would take it's place?   Like a free program, since I paid something for CleanMyMac2.
No. Using CleanMyMac2 can result in deleting required system components that must not be deleted, and cannot be deleted using normal means. Reports of misery resulting from using it or similar "cleaning" utilities are common on this site. You should demand your money back.
OS X maintains itself very well. Periodic "cleaning" is not required and can only result in degraded performance at best; a corrupted and useless Mac at worst. The perceived need for aftermarket utilities is probably attributable to many new Mac users who became inured to them after years of using Windows PCs.
Though Norton / Symantec's garbage has a different purpose, it is capable of doing nothing beneficial will also cause the same results.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • After upgrading to Tiger, freeze after waking from sleep on PM G4

My experience with Tiger in the past week as not been great. The reason I upgraded was to get iSync 2.1, so that my Moto E815 phone could be sync'd with my OSX AddresBook and iCal. This wasn't possible with the latest version of Panther.
So, I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.3, and now my G4 freezes immediately after waking from sleep. After pressing the 'return' key to wake the computer, the G4 sends a signal to wake the monitor, but on top of the screen saver is a black text box which states there was a problem I must press (and hold) the power button to restart the Mac. It's written in four languages.
When I installed Tiger, I used the 'archive' option.
My computer is a bit of a FrankenMac: Originally a G4/350 with AGP, upgraded with a Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor card, 1.12GB RAM, a 160GB HDD, an nVidia GeForce3 64MB AGP video card, Samsung DVD/CR-RW drive (Patchburn3) and a Belkin PCI card with 2 additional Firewire ports and 3 additional USB 2.0 ports. When I performed the upgrade, I had the keyboard and mouse plugged into the case USB 1.1 ports, a Logitech Notebook Pro USB camera plugged into the other case USB 1.1 port, and a D-Link BT120 USB->BT adapter plugged into one of the three USB 2.0 ports on the Belkin PCI card.
When I check the Console logs after the rebooting, I see a kernal panic in the panic.log. Apple has received this a number of times from me in the past week as I keep sending them 'talkback' logs after the fact.
I also see an error in the system.log which may reveal what is going on:

I suspect the problem where the USB devices are started, because I had that Bluetooth adapter plugged in at the time of the upgrade. I'm speaking of the lines in the log which start with 'USBF'. The keyboard and mouse are useless when the black screen shows up after waking from sleep.
I've tried some of the suggestions I've found for the iBook 'wake from sleep' postings on macfixit.com and here - resetting NVRAM and removing a few of the .plist files. This didn't seem to help.
I would greatly appreciate help in resolving this issue. I've been a Mac owner since the original Macintosh (it's still in my house) and am frustrated that this is the first problem I've encountered.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks. In fact I had bought a new keyboard and mouse (Macally) and sure enough, if I unplug it before it reboots, the CD drive door stays closed and I can boot from a CD! I did not try any of the other stuff. Is there any way to get it to stop this? Why does a USB peripheral cause the CD to eject anyway? Would love to know!

  • Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.
    Here's a screenshot example: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/tashamay/Picture2.jpg
On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
    Any ideas?

    Hello tashamay:
I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
I would also clear the Safari cache again.

  • G4/400 Tiger freeze when resizing a window.

    Hello all,
I'm helping a friend move from System 8 to Tiger on his G4/400 "Sawtooth" model. The machine is somewhat usable but it is awfully touchy and the keyboard and mouse freeze seemingly at random. However if I open a Finder window, and resize it, it will happen pretty much every time.
I suspected the video card or driver, and he's willing to upgrade the card, but I haven't yet seen anything on these forums or elsewhere to suggest that a Rage 128 should be a problem. I don't think he had such issues with System 8, but I'm not sure.
I've tried most of the standard checks: hardware test, disk utility, etc. though I need to repeat them with the added RAM out.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

Did you update the firmware (to Boot ROM version 4.2.8) before installing Tiger? See Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Did you use a universal install CD or a CD from another Mac model?
OS X is really "picky" about the "quality" of RAM. Many RAM modules that operate OK in classic OS do not operate OK in OS X. How much RAM is installed & does it all show up in the About This Mac/Apple System Profiler when you boot in Tiger? Check with the added RAM out.
Are you getting the Kernal Panic messages. Here's some links to look at:
