Safari 3.2 requirements: 10.5.5 or 10.4.11 (or higher)
Many people have profiles indicating that their computer does not meet the requirements for Safari 3.2

nero, I've been trying to figure this out too . . .
It says
Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.5 or Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 (or higher)
I think the baseline is 10.4.11 up to 10.5.5.
So, thinking that, anyone with 10.5.2 would qualify.
And someone with 10.4.8 would not.
Is this correct???
I do think we need guidance on this.

It's not clear to me either, but I think that they mean the top level of Tiger or Leopard.
They specifically say 10.5.5 and if some people try to install it under 10.5.2 etc., that might account for some of the issues. Notice that they also state that the latest security update 007 must be installed, Cross-checking that security update says that it can only be installed on Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard 10.5.5 so I think that cinches it.

I read such that attempting to install the latest Safari on a computer that does not have all the latest system and security updates will cause problems.
I do see many of these threads with posters whose profiles do not meet the requirements. Of course it could simply be a stale profile, which is why they are important to keep current. Many of the issues here may simply be that the user did not read the manual

Halfway through the OS X Yosemite update it says I am not connected to the internet (when I know I am because I can search through the app store). How can I fix this? I cannot get on Safari because it requires an update to Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Just to be clear. You have downloaded the Yosemite installer. However you say while it's updating you get the error you are not online. This is confusing since you shouldn't be able to use your computer in the process of updating.
Exactly where do you see you need to 10.9 to get on Safari? -

I think you need this.

When visit some websites page will not display. Safari says "cookies are required to visit this site" how to resolve this issue
I too was having the same problem. Then after reading posts here I went and created a new account. I had to add a credit card to my new account. After I did that I was able to download apps from the store.

Disabling Adobe Reader XI's Plug-In for Safari Does Not Require Access to OS X's 'Root' Account
Why do the instructions for disabling the Adobe Reader plug-in for Safari say that one needs to do so from OS X's root account even though one only needs to authenticate using their administrator password to do so?

Safari pdf plugin requires $60+ fee. What's up?
I can't get my bank's pdf to show in entirety because I've got to buy a $60+ fee for a plugin. Is there a work around? I'm running Mountain Lion Safari in 32 bit. 64 bit doesn't work either.
It is beginning to appear that just about everything that is connected with Adobe (pdf viewer & flash) has been disabled on most macs. I believe this is done on purpose by Apple.
Similar to what's happening with anything connected with Google.
Apple continues to try to control the world.
I don't even have that plug-in listed in my Library, so there's nothing to remove. Using Google Chrome does work, thank goodness.
I do have to print as .pdf file many bank and financial statements for my non-profit. It is becoming more and more difficult.
Fortunately, I still have a Windows 7 computer with which to accomplish many of these tasks that Apple is blocking. Are you listening Apple? do you care? -
Why is safari google search requiring authentication?
The safari google function on my iPad w/OSX6 keeps asking for a user name and password. I ave no ideas what they are asking for. Google search using Safari is useless now. So sorry I downloaded OSX6 now.....is there a fix for this?

Exactly! Not at all understanding why poster clkuan doesn't get it.....
First of all, you got all the terms wrong and now you said I don't get it?
Now, for the last time, you don't need a userid & password doing a search in Google unless you want to log in to some paid web sites. I just try that to check.
And, I don't find much here in this forum similar to your case.
It still happens even after Apple gave me a new iPad!!! They seemed to know exactly what I was saying and all about the problem but would not disclose to me why it was happening...they just gave me a new iPad. Problem is still there.
"They seem to know", how can you tell?
What I also don't understand is that, you go all the way to an Apple Store and they gave you a new iPad. You went home without checking whether your problem is solved?
Now try this, Settings > Safari > Private Browsing: OFF, Accept Cookies : From visited is selected.
Tap Clear History & Clear Cookies and Data.
Make sure and the rest of the options are ON.
Double tab Home button and delete Safari form multitask bar.
Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears, ignore the Slide to Power Off that appears)
Note: You will not lose any data. -
Safari Clear Cookies required to login to my Optonline mail?
If I don't Clear Cookies, after logging in I briefly see a "Signing in Lee ..." screen followed by a blank login in screen. Can't login. Works fine on IMac and IPhone. This is a new problem and may have started immediately after upgrading the os - just not sure of the timing.

Firefox browser, because it has the most add-ons and also the only one with NoScript.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
the add-ons of
Ghostery (enable all in preferences, web trackers, Flash and Silverlight cookies etc)
TrackMeNot (sends random search data to search engines as they record all your searches)
HTTPSEverywhere (from the EFI, asks for a encrypted connection from all websites if possible)
Click&Clean (cleans all info upon exit to reduce History Sniffing, cookies etc)
AdBlock Plus (enable ALL blocking in preferences or Google ads get through)
NoScript (drag a Temp Allow All button to the FF toolbar, click only if you trust the site)
WebofTrust (community driven warning system of bad sites/links and whatever)
Use DuckDuckGo as your search engine, they don't record your searches.
Of course all this is diddle squat as the NSA records all Internet traffic, passes what they find to the FBI and your ISP has your physical location.
So your not anonymous, but at least you can block all the others.
Use Safari for those sites that won't work under your FF configuration.
Don't use Chrome as it's Google and they are the biggest trackers of them all. -
Downloaded safari 3.2.1 leopard, and failed to mount every time
I was trying to reach my mail by mobileme and suddenly I can't view the mail, never. It says when i just start the mail, tha i need to upgrade to safari 3.2, I downloaded it from the mac page, 5 times, and every time APPEARS.... FAILED TO MOUNT, ERROR -4960
Your problem would seem to be that you need to upgrade your version of Mac OS X, since Safari 3.2 requires you to be running 10.5.5 or higher, which you're not doing. You should download and install the 10.5.5 Combo Update or the 10.5.6 Combo Update (your choice).
If you choose the 10.5.5 Combo Update, then you can download and install the Safari 3.2 update; the 10.5.6 Combo Update already includes it. Be sure to repair permissions before you install either one, and again after you're finished. And update your profile so it's accurate.

Processor requirements for Safari?
For my first foray into Apple Discussions, I am going to ask what is probably a very stupid question, but here goes...
After updating the software on my OLD iMac at work (to OS 10.4.7, Safari 2.0.4), Safari will not launch. I get one of those "Safari unexpectedly quit-other applications not affected" error msgs every time. The guys from our IT department took a look and told me that this version of Safari will not run on a computer as old as mine. (I have exactly the same stuff on my iBook G4 at home and it works great.) They downloaded Firefox and told me to use that. Is this for real? Does Safari have processor requirements above and beyond the OS? Everything else seems to be working OK. And if it really is true, can I uninstall the new Safari and install an older version?
Thanks!Hi nildem, & welcome to apple discussions
Safari is bundled with os x 10.4.7, if the computer can handle the os it can handle Safari
Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.6 tech specs
Requirements
•Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
•Built-in FireWire
•DVD drive for installation
•256MB of RAM
•3GB of available hard disk space (4GB if you install the developer tools)
Try a test account to see if safari works there.
Did you apply Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo PPC which os did you update from?
Did you run disk permission repair before & after the installation of the update.

Leopard Safari requires reloading user name and password
Tried asking this another way and no one answered, which left me to wonder if no one on this forum knows the answer or it I wasn't clear in asking it? Let me be more specific: Leopard Safari requires a user name and password to be entered each time an appropriate web site is opened, even when "refresh" is clicked. For example, I use "myyahoo" for the homepage, but now each time I open Safari, I am required to reenter the user name and password. Ditto every site I have saved autofill data for. This did not happen with Tiger, prior to upgrading to Leopard last Friday. I also tried phoning the Apple Care support number -- a 37 minute wait produced someone who said my call needed to be forwarded to the Safari desk, and likely involve another extensive wait. So I gave up that idea and am trying here again. Help!
Thank you! In Preferences, all the autofill boxes are checked. Just to be sure, I unchecked them all then rechecked them. Autofill form works in Edit. Before the upgrade, Safari was able to maintain user names and passwords on sites where I wanted them. After the upgrade Friday evening, Safari stopped doing this on all sites where I already had a user name and password, including the Mac site. Simply, I am now required to re-enter this information every visit to every site, even if I just click refresh, not only when I exit Safari and return. Even if I leave a site where I have entered the password, visit another site, and then return, the user name and password must be entered again. I have still had no luck getting Apple Care on the phone. This morning I bit the bullet and decided to wait until finally somebody answered, but no amount of patience can listen to scratchy wait music for more than 45 minutes, which is when I gave up. So if someone here doesn't understand this, guess I'm stuck having to enter this information again and again and again... or figure out how to get back to Tiger.

My safari v 5.0.2 just crashes once i log onto facebook, within minutes of logging onto facebook, safari shuts down without any warning what so ever, n its not only the facebook tab or window, all the windows quit themselves and then this creen comes up with an error message, i am pasting the error message below … i had googled this problem earlier and o the discussion forum i had found someone mentioning that safari should be run in 32 bit, so i have even done that, but of no use, it still quits. Also if i open facebook on firefox, it works absolutely fine, no problem what so ever, but only safari keeps quitting. Safari has quit before aswell when i was on some other websites, but i do no remember which website it was, however the facebook quitting happens without fail, each and everytime. Please help. Thank you.

You are running an outdated version of Safari 5.0.1
Click your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click Software Update...
Restart your Mac after the updates are installed. Try Safari.
Facebook requires the latest version of Safari which is 5.0.4

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, i can't connect to app store or safari
After Upgrading to Mountain Lion, I can't access the app store, itunes store, Safari - anything that requires the internet. I tried resetting my modem and rebooting.
I also tried deleting items from the keychain that look like they are related to the above. When I did that and rebooted, It works for a little while, and then gets back to where it won't login to anything on the internet and safari won't load anything. This means that at some time you had the iWork ’09 trial installed. You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user. Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

Grrrr. Or, "A Sucker's Guide to Safari"
(I thought I posted this an hour ago but it is not showing up...)
<edited by host>
Basic question: Is there a (marginally) functional browser for the iMac? I have mostly struggled with Safari (code named "Beachball") - see below - but I've also tried Netscape and Explorer and they seem to have their own unique sets of problems.
As background, I have a 1 GHz iMac G4 running 10.3.9. 768 MB of physical RAM. We are in a residential home hooked up to cable internet with a router into which both this machine and my girlfriend's antiquated Windows 98 machine are connected. Invariably, I get snappier response on her PC than on this thing. I've done the basics that I know about - clearing the cache, deleting every possible browser window I can get along without (to great inconvenience at times), and killing every other program running on the machine to free memory. Still I am staring at a beachball more often than not it seems.
I'm using Safari 1.3.2. I checked in here a few months ago and learned to my utter shock that Apple had not bothered to release a new version in years. This boggled my mind, with all of its obvious problems. But I read somewhere that in whichever decade Apple deigned to release an update, it would show up in my regular "New Software" window. Now I am checking in again, and I notice a sub-forum about "Safari 3 beta". Hello? Did I miss a whole major rev? Why was this kept a state secret from Apple's loyal users?
Now on to my specific rants about this shiny and impressive-looking but almost utterly useless piece of crud. For the purposes of catharsis I have given my complaints the subheadings they would have if there were an honest, unvarnished User's Guide to Safari. If anyone thinks these problems may be of my own doing I would appreciate knowing why.
A Sucker's Guide to Safari (aka "Beachball")
Not Now Honey, I'm Washing the Windows
Safari is designed to get geometrically slower as the number of open windows increases. On a PC, you might have about twenty windows open and the incremental slowdown is barely perceptible. With more than about five windows open in Safari however, the program will go into our patented, proprietary "Glacial Advance Mode (tm)". This is actually a nice feature, as it will teach you to simplify your life. We feel that more than five open windows is unnecessary clutter. Remember, less information at your fingertips is more.
It's Hard to Remember to Forget Sometimes
Safari will typically hang up for about 30 to 45 seconds simply deleting a window. You may wonder what the program could possibly be doing at these times, as it doesn't take more than a couple seconds to delete resources like that. The answer? Absolutely nothing. This was just an idea our programmers had for giving you time to go get a snack. Thoughtful, huh?
Don't Press This Button!
There is a little "refresh/stop loading" button at the top of each browser window. Do not ever press it. It is solely there for decoration, and to make Safari users believe they are operating a professional browser. If you press it while it is showing an "X" at any but the earliest split seconds of a window downloading, it will ignore your request to stop loading... until the window has finally completed and it has turned into the arrow (reload) button. Then it is MORE than happy to "process" your request, which it now interprets as a "reload". This will reinitiate the long, character-building, designed-to-be-slower-than-molasses Safari page load process. This "adding insult to injury" fail safe will quickly teach you not to press it. Bad user. Didn't your mother teach you not to touch everything you found in front of you?
Pass Me the Beach Ball!
Ever notice when you are on the beach and things get really slow, someone will break out a beach ball and start tossing it around? Well, we have attempted to recreate that "vacation experience" in Safari for your relaxation and pleasure. Often after you are done loading the last link you clicked on and Safari isn't required to do anything, it will get bored and begin batting one around on a whim. Do NOT interrupt its fun! Would you like it if you were swatting one around at the shore and someone stepped in and said, "Excuse me, I need some information"? No, you wouldn't, and neither does Safari. Have some consideration.
Don't Look at Me Like That!
Safari will crash if you breathe on it wrong, so please brush your teeth regularly while using it. There are many websites that, while perfectly accessible from other browsers, will routinely disintegrate our application into a blithering heap of pitiful bit-rubble. Life is a fragile thing, and this is our way of reminding you. After quitting, Safari will ask you if you would like to share your interesting experience with the nice programmers at Apple. Rest assured that cursing in the text window will not help your cause. We will put out a new version when we are good and ready, which is approximately never.
The Cursors and Arrows of Outrageous Misfortune
The cursor arrow will sometimes inexplicably disappear if you run it through a certain anti-magic "land mine" spot on the screen on some windows. You will have to fumble around without a visible arrow on the screen until some unclear random event occurs and it reappears. Sort of like some wild and wonderful video game. This surreal experience is included in Safari at no extra cost to our users.
Drop Down and Give Me Twenty
Many web pages contain a widget known as a "dropdown" choice. These are bad web pages and should never be visited. As a way of enforcing this point, we have programmed a special tripwire feature. If, when the page has mostly downloaded but Safari is still doing its vital thumb-twiddling tasks (made evident by the blue bar still in the address window), you decide to change the drop down widget on the renegade page to your eventual choice, you will be punished. While the widget itself will appear as your newly selected choice, the page will sit as originally loaded. Now however, in order to really have the page loaded with that choice in mind, you cannot simply "reload". This is because the dropdown itself needs to send its command to the website you are on. So, thanks to Safari allowing the widget to change but not actually take effect, you have to change the dropdown control away from your preferred choice, let the page reload excruciatingly slowly, and then change it back to where you had it, and watch it reload excruciatingly slowly once again. This will teach you not to visit these insolent web pages. Use another browser if you want to work with them. We do not wish to validate them by engaging with them.
Manage Bookmarks? Sure.
When you choose this from the menu, it will wipe out whatever window you had on top. Sometimes there was information on the window that doesn't reload if you back up. Tough. We know that every other browser on the market opens a new window when you want to edit your bookmarks. We think this makes our browser unique. Expect the unexpected, that's our motto.
Have You Seen My Glasses?
Safari sometimes forgets where the edges of its windows are (or even the items inside them). At times you may click in the scroll bar at the right side to drag the slider down and advance the page, but it will think you are actually in the page, and instead highlight the contents! It will look like Safari's hand-to-eye coordination has completely broken down. This is normal. Safari is actually completely at peace with where its windows are. It is you, your eyes, the room around you, and in fact the rest of the known universe that is confused and deluded.
We hope this Sucker's Guide to Safari has been helpful. And don't forget that Safari is "The Most Advanced Browser Ever"!
iMac G4 1 GHz Mac OS X (10.3.9) 768 MBHi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Short answer, download and use either Firefox 2.0.4, or Camino for the time being, until you restore sanity..
Safari upgraded to version 2 with OS X Tiger. It's up to Beta 3 now (Beta means possible bugs) available to anyone with OS 10.4.9 or 10.4.10. It is being groomed for OS X Leopard come October. Whether it is still available as a final product on Tiger remains to be seen. As you have Panther, your version is the most recent. Changes in the browser and OS X made backward compatibility with Safari 2 not practical.
Yes, Safari has shortcomings, as do all browsers (Windows browsers are magnets for viruses, spyware, malware). Yet, I find it my browser of choice, simply because it works. Part of that equation = adjusting your Network settings in System Preferences to speed things up.
One tip: go to your system preferences>Network>TCP panel. In the DNS servers box, enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 on separate lines. Select "apply". Also, click on the show drop down menu>Network Port Configuration. At the top of the list ought to be your primary connection medium (ethernet, airport etc.) - you can drag it there if necessary. All others ought to be unchecked.
Whether this improves performance depends on other factors, such as bookmarks etc. In any event, these changes will prove helpful in the long run.
Answers to your other questions about Safari will come, but first I have a bunch of stuff to handle away from the computer. Perhaps, other contributors to this forum will step in.
I'll be back. -
I upgraded Safari, and now it won't work at all.
I have 10.3.9 and upgraded to Safari 4, which I found out too late is not compatible. It used to be you couldn't even install software that wasn't. Anyway, after I went through the whole process, I clicked to start up Safari, and it won't open. It acts like it will, but it doesn't. Now, I can't figure out how to download old Safari. I did go through all the suggestions on here about getting rid of history and things like that. Any other suggestions?
HI,
Safari version 4 requires that your Mac OS X is running Tiger 10.4.11
Safari 4 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard® version 10.5.6 and Security Update 2009-001 or Mac OS X Tiger® version 10.4.11, a minimum 256MB of memory, and is designed to run on any Intel-based Mac or a Mac with a PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor and built-in FireWire®. Safari 4 for Windows requires Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista, a minimum 256MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor. Full system requirements and more information on Safari 4 can be found at www.apple.com/safari.
From here... http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/02/24safari.html
*"Now, I can't figure out how to download old Safari"*
Insert your original Mac install disk and reinstall the Safari application from the Optional Installs package.
Always make sure the hard drive has sufficient space available.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
