Safari 3 Messed Me Up

So tonight i decided that i would download safari 3 beta (for mac) it wouldnt work. pages werent loading.. instead of messing around with it, i just deleted it, and reinstalled safari 2... now for some reason, on a lot of pages, when i type the address, i have have to hit enter, let it load, and get a blank, or close to blank page, then i hit enter again, and the page loads. Also I have noticed that it keeps kicking me off of msn since the change.
most websites are doing this, and its a real pain. I've repaird permissions, both on the harddrive and from the disk, i've reset safari, emptied cache and all that.. i dunno what else to do.

Hi
Perhaps the preference file was corrupted (hope it's that easy of a fix). In the Finder, go to your User Library>Preferences folder and move to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist file. Restart Safari. If Safari is operating properly, you'll need to reset any custom preference settings, plus any View Menu items and the Spelling checker in the Edit Menu.
If no improvement, move the original file back to its original location.

  • Safari messing up.

For some reason, my Safari has decided to stop letting me on certain sites such as Bebo, Photobucket, Youtube etc.
The only websites it's letting me on are Apple, Twitter and Google.
    What's going ooon? ):

Try resetting Safari default settings. Here is how to do it:
    1. Open your Safari web browser by clicking on the Safari icon in the dock.
    2. Click on Safari in your Safari menu, located at the top of your screen.
    3. A drop-down menu will now appear. Choose the option labeled Reset Safari....
    4. A warning dialog will now appear detailing the items that will be removed.
    5. Click the button on the dialog labeled Reset to complete the process.
    6. Your Safari browser will now restart automatically.

  • SWF insert shows clear border in Safari, but not IE

    Hi...
I'm trying to fit a Flash project into my HTML page perfectly between images without borders to look like one big image.  It looks perfect in IE, but not safari.
I've spent hours researching but can't find a fix.  When I insert an SWF file into Dreamweaver, it's showing up with an invisible border.  That pad/border then shows up in Safari messing the whole page up... but looks perfect in IE.
    Here's the page....  http://www.bnbfish.com/History.html
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    *** WARNING! ***
*** Music auto-plays with NO way to turn it off in the browser! ***
    Man, I LOVE Thin Lizzy!
BUT, since I'm listening to them already (different song), I was confused for a bit when I suddenly started hearing that tune over the top. Please don't auto-start music on web sites - especially for a restaurant. BTW, do you have permission to broadcast that tune?
Sorry I don't have an answer at the moment. It looks bad in FireFox, too. My gut instinct is that you are designing for the broken browser first, then wondering why compliant browsers don't view it the same way. Pixel perfection is tough to obtain between browsers and operating systems, anyway. And I just had to close your page to stop the music mix.

  • Safari text-enlargement bookmarklet being changed automatically, so won't work

    got iOS4, iPad1.
being unable to enlarge text is just about the stupidest omission i can think of. NO text online is large enough to be read on a 10-inch screen without straining your eyes. and zooming in and moving page back and forth on every line? why, that'd be too stupid for windows 95.
this post explains how to enlarge safari text:
    http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/threads/increase-font-size-in-safari-withou t-zooming.8403/
i tried 3 ways to save this bookmarklet: copy it on ipad, save on computer safari and sync, and finally laboriously typing it out on ipad.
result is the same each time, safari messes up the code, changing < to %3, rendering it useless.
some posters on there reported the same problem, but some got it to work.
this bookmarklet is still a stupid way to do it, have to hit it every time you get to a new page, but still better than having actual pain in your eyes after 10 minutes.
    thanks much,
    m

    thank you for answering.
what you suggest might be okay for some quick browsing, when you read a few words here and there. still annoying and a time-waster, but doable.
my  problem is reading pages and pages and pages that have wall-to-wall text like a news or wikipedia articles or a book, when you, as i wrote above, have to move the page with your finger left to right with EVERY line you read, which is insanely stupid.
i checked, and it actually is %3C, so like you said, it should work.
i guess i'll have to spring for PerfectReader, though i'm out of the country for a long while and no credit card, so it'd be a pain...
yet another brilliant apple accomplishment, like the earphone jack on my $2000 macbook which, like those of thousands who complain about it online, broke after few months of use.

  • Why Arabic doesn't show up properly in Safari?

Why Safari doesn't render arabic fonts properly while Firefox and Opera do?
They renders diacritic signs correctly while Safari messes up. In ذَهَبَ، -َ، يَذهَبُ the last Damma in Safari appears at the beginning of the words. The HTML code is the same but Safari makes mistakes, why?
I published a little dictionary (http://homepage.mac.com/pvmantel/arabo/home.html) but it cannot be properly seen in Safari (IE doesn't even show the arabic letters!!).
Thanks for any suggestion to make Safari working properly

Tom, I see you are an expert on the topic and I hope you, or anyone knowledgable, can help me out. as per the popular suggestion of getting rid of all things "arial" and "times new roman" to fix the safari mess-up, I actually removed every instance of these fonts (with all their possible variations, bold, italic, etc) from all locations, not just the user/lib/fonts location, but to no avail... while my Safari can properly read "some" arabic websites, it scrambles arabic up on most others, Two popular examples would be aljazeera.net and www.alarabiya.net. any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.....

  • Wierd safari bug - is this a hack of some kind?

this happens quite a bit - here's an example. I try to visit a link provided by google and end up with some weird page with other links. But when I do the same link through Firefox everything is ok - see an example below (first the Safari mess, then Firefox as it should be):
    Has Safari been hacked?

    Hello Hans,
    Has Safari been hacked?
NO ...... why do you think that Safari is be hacked ?? I think that you are a switcher that recently used Micro Soft.
Did you empty caches in the Safari application ?? Sometimes it's just a matter that the caches shown a older make up of a web site.

  • Mac OS 10.6.8 can't watch youtube videos, black screen, no sound, nothing happens w/click.

Not real computer savy but this happened all of the sudden.  Tryed going back and watching videos I've watched before.  No go.  Tryed uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe a couple of times with restart, no change.  Made sure my apple updates were up to date, nothing.
There was some direction on YouTube to try right clicking or ctrl clicking on the video and it'll bring up a certain menu where you can select to watch the video a different way.  Tryed that, and the menu options they say should come up, don't come up.
I can't figure it out.  Help would be much appreciated as it's driving me nuts.
    Thank you!

You rock Clinton!  It was F*king Safari messing up my mojo.  Man, I just spent... 5 hours of pure frustration.  Thank you so much, you've gotta have some good karma coming your way for that.
So, installing Firefox did the dealio for me on this one.
    Now I can watch fun videos like;

  • Font Smoothing GONE--Help!!!

I'm running 10.6.2, and I pretty much have ZERO font smoothing whenever I ctrl-mouse zoom on any menu, any text, any program. This is on my MacBook Pro (2 years old) that had perfect font smoothing in Leopard.
I've turned off the CRT checkbox in System Preferences—doesn't help
I've used Terminal to run defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 and also tried 2 and 3 and even reverting to defaults—doesn't help
I've used Font Book to validate fonts and remove duplicates (especially after Office 2004 install)—doesn't help
I've also rebooted after all these operations—still almost zilch smoothing on zoom
    Even Finder looks AWFUL
Help! My MBP looks like crap now!

That sounds good. A lot of tests to run! Hate to do the new user test, but will if I have to.
I am really leaning toward the Option-Command-"\" having (unintentionally) turned OFF Screen Zoom (under mouse or trackpad) Image Smoothing.
How could it take me so long to learn that there is Font Smoothing, and there is Image Smoothing. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
The Chain of Blame here is so convoluted it hurts my brain.
    1. Evernote was trying to reinstall web clipping and/or its Safari plug-in ever since I converted to Snow Leopard. (Massive evidence of this in Console error messages, and they are hilarious: "Can't get Elephant!" and "Can't install icon!" over and over and over again. Just give it up, Evernote!)
    2. So one day Evernote's interference with Safari messes up my executing the Option-Command-"\" command to log into my bank (it's normally a 1Password keyboard shortcut that works great in Safari).
    3. Option-Command-"\" reverts back to its "normal" designation (turn on/off Screen Zoom (under mouse or trackpad) Image Smoothing).
    4. I hit Option-Command-"\" repeatedly, trying to get the 1Password HUD to pop up in Safari. It doesn't.
    5. By hitting Option-Command-"\" so many times, I unintentionally turn off Screen Zoom Image Smoothing. Only I don't realize it.
If this theory IS correct, then it's a simple fix!
    The lesson learned would be:
System Preferences, Personal, Appearance, Font Smoothing
    is a DIFFERENT preference from
System Preferences, Mouse/Trackpad, (Two Fingers), Screen Zoom, Options, Smooth Images
Of course, I'll report back just as soon as my SuperDuper backup finishes and I can try this test.
And if this IS the problem, well, I blame it on the elephant.

  • Youtube Video Issue

Hello, First off, I've had this problem in Safari 3 and in the current 4-beta. When I go to access and YouTube video, i get an "error". It says that the video is not available. After about 6 or 7 refreshes to the page, it loads. Is this a YouTube problem, or is my Safari messing up?

  • Poor 4S battery life while using apps

Most of the posts I've been following about cruddy iOS5 battery life seem to revolve around when the phone is in standby. I seem to have that mostly addressed on my phone. So my big complaint is how poor the battery life is while I'm actually using the phone. I'm coming from the 4, whose battery life wasn't really stellar, but this is by far worse.
I know they dropped the estimated battery life on WiFi from 10 hours to 9, but what I'm experiencing is worse than that. I played 10 minutes of a non-intensive game yesterday (one that wouldn't have a large battery impact on my 4), and in those 10 minutes, the battery life dropped from 75% to 69%.
As of right now (12:31), my battery life is at 22%, down from 76% at 6:30 this morning. With my 4, I would have been in the mid 50s, and I've done nothing differently than I would have a week ago. Checked my mail, read a couple of static pages in Safari, messed with the Settings a little, checked my calendar and reminders a couple of times--nothing intesive. No games, no map. I did browse the App Store for about five minutes, but... This is all standard usage sorta stuff that never would have drained half the battery life with my 4. My "usage" even shows that the phone has been inactivate for 3 out of those 6 hours.
Any suggestions on this? My standby life, while not fantastic, isn't horrific, so I think I've effectively tweaked a lot of the tweakable things (like location stuff, diagnostics, etc). But is there something I could be missing? I have the screen on auto-brightness with the slider set to just below the "gh" in "Brightness." That's where I kept it on my 4, too.
I thought I read the new battery was actually better, but this is definitely not an improvement

I have the same problem! Mine does last for about 3 - 4 hours, but that is about it! Any suggestions?

  • Something is not working!

So been having issues with the new iMac. Tried safe boot, delet/reset the NVRAM and repaired the disk utility. It worked fine for a week but when my husband tried opening GarageBand it locked. We did the other steps again but it seems to be running slow and safari messed up and just flickered. What might be the problem? To me it feels like something gets messed up every time my husband opens up GarageBand and then the whole computer breaks down?!

You could try re-downloading and installing from the Apple Store. I assume it was freely available to you when you set up the Mac? You won't have to pay for it.
Go to the Apple Menu>App Store and check your purchases - it should be listed. It may say 'installed' and not show an option to re-download. To get round this, quit the App Store, move Garageband from the Applications folder to Trash (don't empty yet). Log back on to the App Store and Garageband should be available to re-download. Launch it and see if it makes a difference. If it solves it you can empty the Trash.
I don't use Garageband, but as a precaution, make sure you have a back-up of any GB files you may have created.

  • I Messed Up Safari But Can't Seem to Re-Download It

I used Target Disk Mode to copy Applications from my desktop to my MacBook, which worked fine for the most part, but now Safari is really messed up. Doesn't really open; crashes immediately after a link is clicked in an e-mail. I've tried to re-download both Safari 4 beta (which I have on my desktop) and the most current Safari 3, but the files I get end in exe.part and my MacBook doesn't seem to know how to open them.
This is a real pain because Safari is my default browser for opening links in e-mails. My understanding is that to change the default browser (to Firefox, for example, I need to go into Safari --> Preferences, but I can't do that because Safari won't open enough for me to do that.
    How can I fix/re-download Safari?

Yes, the .exe does make it sound that way, but if that's the case, I think either Apple has messed up the links or I am stupid beyond all belief because I clicked on the download button for Leopard multiple times with the same result.
Also get the same result for both Safari 4 beta and 3 -- just can't believe I would be moronic enough to download the Windows versions all these times and places.

  • Safari has stopped working properly since upgrading to Mountain Lion.  Have parental controls in place and it will not add websites.  Also short cuts at top of tabs now all messed up!

Since upgrading to mountain lion the other day (from lion) safari has not been working properly.  I have parental controls in place but seem unable to add new web pages to allowed list - wasn't expecting to have to anyway - these are webpages that were working perfectly well on safari prior to upgrade.  Also the shortcuts above the tabs on safari are all now messed up.
Any advice on how to fix - I am not a computer expert so keep it simple please!
In the meantime I am having to use Firefox.
    Thanks

  • When i updated OS X update to 10. 10.2 and iTunes to 12.1 and restarted my mac, safari got messed up

I updated my OS X and iTunes today and when I restarted my mac, safari got messed up. No matter how many times I change the preference of the new windows and tabs to favorites and remove the homepage site, it always get back to what it was-- homepage for both and search-quick.com for the homepage site. I can't open a new tab/window with the favorite--and it's very annoying since it opens with the search-quick.com. I've never installed search quick program, and I can't get rid of it. On the preference, the google is set to my search engine but whenever I search something it uses that search quick site. I don't know how to get rid of it and I want to remove it so bad. The biggest issue is whatever I click, the useless ads (mackeeper, justcloud, seniorsoulmates, McAfee, etc) keeps popping up on the new tabs. Literally, it pops up whenever I click something. It's driving me crazy- what should I do?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
