Safari 32bit memory use vs 64bit

I have to switch Safari into 32bit mode for a particular website that uses Adobes FileOpen software for PDFs. I normally have two Safari windows open with about 15 tabs open between them. I know 32bit does not use memory as efficiently as 64bit mode. But, how much difference will I see in memory use? Or is it negligible?

BTW.. if you are running the latest Flash plugin version you shouldn't have to set Safari to open in 32 bit mode anyway... or try troubleshooting by uninstalling your current copy of Flash then reinstalling.

Since automatic update to safari 5.1 it doesnt open any websites anymore. i'm using win7 64bit as operating system. how could i get safari 5.1 to work correctly or downgrade it to earlier version?

Trying to use a java 32bit program in Arch 64bit

After giving up some time ago, I decided once more to try to run a commercial 32bit Java application in my Arch 64bit. The same program runs fine in a vm with Ubuntu 64bit. Also, I installed bin32-jre from aur and I messed up the jre.sh and jdk.sh scripts in /etc/profile.d/ and made it work, but then my native Java 64 bit programs won't run.
To sum up, is there a way to achieve the same Java compatibility that Ubuntu offers? What libs or packages do I have to install and how should I configure them to run every java program, no matter if it is 32 or 64 bit?

Truth is that things are not so simple. This application uses the SWT toolkit for its interface and has other dependencies besides jre (gtk is one for sure). If you can't do that, I can provide some logs. I am sure the problem is not how Java behaves but the way this app is developed and packaged. I have also asked for help, but it seems that they take for granted that their Linux users use distros with mixed libs (like Ubuntu).

Safari 5 High Memory Use

For me, Safari 5 is using a lot of memory (ballooning up to as much as 2.5 GB rather quickly). Average memory use is 2 to 5 times higher than under similar conditions (length between quitting Safari; number of windows/tabs open) with Safari 4. Is anybody else having a similar problem? Does anyone have a possible solution?

Are extensions really the culprit? I turned off extensions, and the memory use is still high ....
I have 50 tabs open, and it takes up 2.5GB!
In Safari 4, I had 200 open and it'd take up that much space

I have a total of 3 DDR2 Gbytes of ram. Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 @ 2.30GHz Win 7 home pr. 64bit. Firefox 27.0 beta
I right click on a file to "open containing folder" from the drop down menu in downloads.
When the folder has been opened, explorer is trying to index the folder (which it never does completely or well after 5 minutes I close the folder and shut down the dllhost process cause laptop is blazing hot) and memory keeps increasing till no more is available.
I checked task manager and see that dllhost is the particular process that is causing the spike in memory usage even after closing the folder I right click and stop the process and memory is restored after awhile.

Safari won't start after showing an error message: Safari can't use the extension "Omnibar" because the extension is no longer valid.

Since yesterday evening (19-01-2015) safari won't start. After clicking the safari application it shows an error message: Safari can't use the extension "Omnibar" because the extension is no longer valid.
This message almost directly disappears whereupon the Problem Report opens. I've tried to find a solution on the web but without succes.
I'm running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1 and Safari version 8.0.2 on a:
MacBook Pro (Retina 13-inch, Mid 2014)
Processor 3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel Iris 1536 MB
Since I updated to Yosemite I've been having multiple problems. I already read a clean install will solve most of them. But till then I would love safari to work again.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. Why is my memory used so high?

I bought a new macbook air with 8gb of rat and 512gb HD and 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5. For some reason my Memory Used is super high even though I barely have anything open. It's been running pretty slow. Even when I hit the F3 button to view all my pages, it's super laggy. Any idea?

Quit Chrome and try using Safari. Why do you think it is running slow?

Photoshop CC reports out of memory using Smart Sharpen

When I try to use Smart Sharpen PS reports out of memory even though I have 32GB of RAM, 25GB available and PS is allowed to use 76%. Increasing amount PS is allowed to use doesn't change anything.

You are definitely using the 64bit version?
Have you tried restarting Photoshop?
What are your Preferences > Performance settings?
Smart Sharpen was one of the items addressed in 14.2 and should be making more use of GPU acceleration. I get almost zero lag with it now.

- I have noticed that memory used is 3.99 out of 4.00 and the process taking most of it is safari web content. Problem also appears when I use Firefox
- this happens even I only have safari or firefox open. No other applications
- I have about 80Gb free disk space

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Safari consumes memory

Dear Everyone,
I have a rather common issue about Safari eating my memory as usage progresses. I have read a few posts on forum on other sites and the topic seem to stop at some point and I am unable to find a resolution (so here I am!).
The version of Safari I am using is 4.0.4 (6531.21.10). The OS is 10.6.2. When I am first browsing pages I notice on my iStat that the browser is consuming 84 mb memory. Then a few hours later, say you go to the Apple movie trailers, Suunto watch campaign website, BBC etc, memory would shoot up to 284 mb. The average number of tabs I would have open would be 4 or 5. Now if Safari needs more memory to run the extra web applications and tabs then I understand. However, if you close these down to one tab with a blank page the difference after a few minutes is only 5-10mb. If I reset the cache and Safari (with all the boxes ticked) this does not make much difference. So me thinks that something gets stuck in memory that does not seem to flush out when these pages are closed. The only other alternative is to close the browser and start again but I was wondering whether there was another way because after the blank page scenario if you open some new tabs and go other websites the memory comsumed is roughly the same (give or take another 10-20mb depending which site you navigated to.)
BTW I am operating Safari in 32 bit mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.

Click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. *Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Relaunch Safari.

I recently read in this forum that "Safari is a memory hog". Exactly how do I determine now much memory Safari is using? Does the amount of memory used increase with usage or over time?

Oddly, I don't really see that on any of my systems. What I do see is an occasional site that causes Safari to go nuts, using all available memory. I've seen that today on the Washington Post opinion pages. Not the opinion home, but if I go to any of the columns themselves, my memory gets maxed out, with Safari using >90% of available memory.

32bit native dll and 64bit jdk

is it possible to use 32bit native dll with 64bit jdk5 and 64bit win2003?
i am trying to use mlib_jai.dll and i think i copied it ot the right place, still i get message that it isn't available. my only gues is that it is related to 32/64 bit isuses, as mlib_jai.dll is comppiled with 32bit compiler. it works on 32bit windows and jdk1.4.
any ideas?

Hi,
Yes you can run your 32 and 64-bit applications side by side. You will need to install both the 32 and 64-bit oracle client as well as the required data access driver for each application in separate oracle homes. The only gotcha is if these applications are running as a hosted applications within IIS, you will need to be sure you are on a version of IIS that allows you to configure separate application pools for 32 and 64-bit worker processes. i.e IIS 7.0. IIS 6.0 allows you to configure worker processes for 32-bit on x64, but it has to be one or the other. You cannot use both at the same time. See the following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894435. If you are running IIS 7 then you can configure separate application pools for the 32 and 64-bit apps. If you are running IIS 7 then its easy to configure the application pool for your 32-bit hosted app to enable 32-bit support by setting a property of the app pool.

Safari wants to use the "login" keychain. -- Why can't Safari remember???

When I launch the Safari application, I get a dialogue box with a message indicating the following:
Safari wants to use the "login" keychain.
Please enter the keychain password.
Password:
Cancel -- OK
When I get this dialogue box, I enter the login keychain password in the Password text box, and I click the OK button. Then, Safari proceeds as normal. This is extremely annoying, because it happens almost every time that I launch Safari.
This only started to happen after I upgraded on Monday to Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5. During the Leopard upgrade, I had problems with the keychain passwords, and so I then upgraded again with the new "Login and Keychain Update 1.0". But, the problems with Safari forgetting the login keychain password continue.
The strange thing is that there is NO option in the dialogue box to indicate that Safari should REMEMBER the password. The option does NOT exist, so I can NOT click the Remember box.
I also went into the Keychain Access utility and double-checked and confirmed that my First Aid preferences were properly CHECKED for "Synchronize login keychain password with account" and also "Keep login keychain unlocked". Both of these preferences options are checked. So, I can't understand why Safari cannot remember the login keychain password?
I have this exact same problem with the Mail application, as well.

I had the same experience and found a solution.
After the upgrade, I had a login keychain (the default) and my original username keychain. Both are in the chain of keychains, but since it has a choice, Mail keeps asking you to confirm.
I moved all the entries out of username into login, deleted username, and all is well.
Note that Keychain asks for your password on EACH ITEM that it moves, which can be tedious. So I changed the keychain password to a single character, just for the duration, then changed it back to something secure.
If, on the other hand, you don't have two keychains, then I can offer no suggestion.
