Safari 4.0.3 Corruption

I thought I was just going crazy until I realized that it wasn't me that was having memory problems, it was Safari. On a number of occasions, Safari has erased the browser history on its own, and decided to restore bookmarks and items to the bookmarks bar that I had deleted. How can I fix this? Thanks - Chris

Hi All, i'm having the same problem of Safari crashing every 15 mins 0r less after i updated (on Thurs;09/17/09) Safari (to 4.0.3 and iTunes (to iTunes 9).. we are having the same problem on 2 different macbooks and our iMac has lost all inet connections although all 3 show that we are connected to our wireless system... i tried logging in as a different user on mine and have the same problem... i read on another thread that iTunes has a strong link to Safari because of the iTunes Store... could the bug be in iTunes ???... i'm having the same problem, if not worse, with FireFox... when my browser crashes Airport shows that i'm connected to our inet... my fix is to turn airport off, then back on, select our network, and then i'm back on... i wish it was a once and awhile fix but i have to do this every 15 mins or less for Safari, more often for FireFox... sometimes i have only seconds before i get the neverending "Loading..." if i wait long enough (Hours!!!) i'll finally get the page that tells me i'm no longer connected to the inet, although AirPort tells me i am connected with the strongest signal...i've also noticed that if i'm idle for even a few seconds it crashes... i'm also on an online sim without having any browsers on and i'm having the same problem, i lose inet connection and am logged out of the sim... i'm no computer geek, not by a long shot, but i suspect one of these updates caused a bug in AirPort that is crashing our connections without AirPort knowing it... now i'm going to copy this because i'm sure when i hit "Post Message" i'll be offline and lose all this... and when i restart AirPort and find this page i'll have only seconds to post this...

  • Safari 2.0.3 corrupted:can't find update again!

    Hi
I'd be grateful if someone could help out with a leeetel prob I've encoutered:
For some reason, Safari 2.0.3 has corrupted. The icon has changed to the standard application icon, and it won't open anymore. (I've had months of good service from the software before this).
So, I go to Apple downloads to reinstall the software, but stranger than strange, I can't find Safari 2.0.3 listed anymore. So I can't download a fresh copy....
(Earlier versions won't install, of course, because I am running OSX 10.4.5).
If anyone could help here please!!
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Have a look at at this thread for how to extract Safari from your Installer disk. The thread mentions the 10.4.4 combo update. Make sure you download the 10.4.5 combo update to complete.

  • Safari update 4.02 corruption

I downloaded 4.02 and installed it. My boot drive is now unbootable. I have run DiskUtility, TechTool Pro 5, Drive Genius 2, and Diskwarrior 4.1.1 to no avail. What is the story with the update? It trashed my system.

I did a rebuild with Diskwarrior 4.1.1 and Drive Genius 2 and TechTool Pro 5. The drive is not completely corrupted. There is clearly a corruption in the boot software since that partition will not boot in safe mode. The only change that was made was the installation of the Safari update. No other bootable drive or partition has been compromised, however I have not attempted an upgrade of Safari on those drives. I have no confidence that the 4.0.2 upgrade will install on my system without further damage. If you can give me a clue to diagnosing what happened I will run the traps to locate the issue, but as of this time I see no reason to assume that the problem was caused by anything other than the update process.
Assume that what I have told you about the result of the update is true, what is the next step to resolving the problem. Incidentally, all systems tests come up clean. NO ISSUES. You have seen the list of tools that I used to test that boot drive.
Suppose that there were corrupted permissions before I ran the update. What would happen if the updater encountered those corrupted permissions? Would there be no effect? Would other files become corrupted by the update process? What is the stream of changes that the updater would make and how might those changes impact the boot process? Does the Safari updater have any involvement with the boot sequence and commands?
This is not a minor issue on my system. I do not have a current clone that I can use to replace the damaged drive. Shame on me, however, I don't expect a Microsoft result from an Apple update.

  • Safari and Mail both corrupted after Security Update

Like many others, I've had a problem with Safari and Mail stability that began with the latest Apple Security Update.
I've tried everything I know how to try to fix it, and I'm stumped.
I've noticed a few people have had astute users such as iBod find the culprit in their crash logs, and I'm hoping like mad for a similar result.
Here is my own crash log:

    iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Jim,
A mystery indeed. Can you recall installing or changing any system preferences around the time the problems started?
As for the parts that Safari uses, I must admit I am not 100% sure where they all are. I think the most important folder is:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/
After deleting that and Safari itself, try reinstalling the Safari 1.3.1 update
You will probably need to delete this file before running the installer or it will think it doesn't need installing:
    /Library/Receipts/SafariUpdate-1.3.1.pkg
(the file may well be called something different - I'm on Tiger 10.4 so this is a guess)
If that works, you might want reapply the 10.3.9 combo update and then the security update again. Let us know how that goes.
I don't care about bookmarks, because I've got all my bookmarks up on my .Mac account and they'll come back as soon as I run iSync.
I would be careful here. I have a feeling that iSync will simply copy up the default bookmark file created by Safari (when you finally get it working again) as it has a newer timestamp versus the .Mac copy. Better to be safe than sorry and backup your /Users/YourUsername/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist before blowing everything away

  • Corrupt safari and non playing dvd

    hey!!
    if someone could please help....
the first issue: my safari application is somehow corrupt. certain texts are reading as jumbled words. when i copy paste to ask others if they can read what i see, they read it just fine. other internet applications read same jumbled emails fine. is there a preff file i can trash that will ree-build itself? but i dont want to trash my bookmarks.
2nd issue: for some odd reason, my dvd player does not recognize dvd movies. i inserted a few titles and the screen said "dvd file not supported". the dvd player in my g4 powerbook laptop worked before. now it's not.
    any suggestions?
    thank!!
    -k

    Hi Kidane,
Any luck on your second issue yet, of the non-playing DVDs? I recently noticed the same problem with my PowerBook not recognizing two brand new region 1 ntsc dvds (which play just fine on an older G4 desktop with an older version of DVD Player). They both have the same unrecognized search cycle that repeats three times, then spits out the DVD. One regularly begins to spin as if to play, but quits after two seconds. I'd love a clue to the fix for this. I don't think the DVDs are faulty, but my superdrive must be. I hope we get an answer!
Edit: I should add, that both non-playable DVDs actually did play just once, after alot of persuasion. But apparently after one play, they won't play again. Neither one played on first insertion either.

  • Safari.exe - corrupt file

After I open safari I keep getting a message that says:
Safari.exe - Corrupt File This file or directory C:\Documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\LastSession.plist is corrupt and unreadable. Please rune the Chkdsk utility.
When I click on the message it goes away but will comeback a few seconds later. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Safari.exe - Corrupt File This file or directory C:\Documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\LastSession.plist is corrupt and unreadable.
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, does Safari launch for you again?

  • Safari History Corrupted

Here's the problem: I've already loaded Safari with bookmarks, so I've been using my browser history as a substitute to keep track of sites. Now, the history is gone. Specifically, the "History.plist" file in ~/Library/Safari is corrupted and crashes nearly any application that tries to open it.
Open Safari without removing its corrupted History.plist file, and Safari quits with error message. Try to import Safari's history into Firefox, and Firefox quits with error message. Try to import Safari's history into a modified version of Firefox called Flock, and Flock becomes unresponsive. Attempting to open the History.plist file with TextEdit, or with Bare Bones Software's TextWrangler causes both of those to quit with error message and/or "Crash Reporter" warning.
So far, the only application I've found that can actually process the corrupted History.plist file is Microsoft Word, which can, after selected the "recover text from any file" option, return a bunch of gobbledygook which contains many if not all of my precious URLs, floating in a sea of garbage.
Is there any way I can convert that gobbledygook into a valid preferences file that Safari can handle without manually copying and reentering every single URL?
Apple Care won't help me because the computer's long since out of warranty; I'm using Safari 4.1.1 on OSX 10.4 Tiger, on a G4 eMac. The Genius Bar might be able to help if I bring the computer in, but I'm trying to avoid bringing in my machine in light of the eMac's rather tremendous shipping weight.
PS— The version of TextEdit on my laptop can open the corrupted History.plist file, and returns much the same gobbledygook as Microsoft Word. I'm not sure what version that is or what the difference is; the laptop is a 2008 MacBook running OSX 10.5 Leopard on an Intel Core 2 Duo.

    HI,
because PlistEditPro isn't registered, but it's not very helpful either.
If it's not helpful, delete PlistEditPro from your Mac. Third party preference file utilities on a Mac aren't necessary. Save yourself any further headaches.

  • Corruption on Display in Safari on Macbook Pro

The page screen in Safari using Macbook pro corrupts and the only way to clear it is to highlight it and then click on it to clear corruption. Does anyone know how to fix this?
It only happens on the macbook. On my Imac it is fine.
Changing the resolution of the display only makes things fuzzy.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, but it's also happening in Mail.app. It is an intermittent problem... a reboot will make it stop happening. It is the same effect as if you were in photoshop and dragged the brightness/contrast slider to the left. So, on a page with photos and a gradient background, the photos get progressively darker the more you scroll. You can even see the gradient background darkening, until the page is almost entirely black, with a few white specks where highlights were (again, just like photoshop).
With text (like an email message) the same effect happens, but it makes the anti-aliasing go to solid black. Here's a screenshot of that http://web.me.com/bigphaty/Screenshots/AppleDisplayProblems.html
I tried to take a screenshot of the photo webpage, but clicking my screenshot widget refreshed the page and it cleared up.
I use a Wacom Intuos tablet, but it happens with the trackpad too. Running a MBP 2.16 core duo with 2g ram. Latest Leopard 10.5.5.
I've also noticed some strange artifacts pop up intermittently when using quicksilver. It will look like a cracked glass screen or something, only for a split second, then disappear.
I've had other issues too, my MBP will wake up and think an external monitor is attached, or wake up at 800x600... The Apple store said they would fix it, but it would take almost a week. That was extremely disappointing, I paid for AppleCare, I can't be without my computer for a week! That's ridiculous.

  • Safari wouldn't open and now I can't reinstall it

Safari wouldn't open (i just bounced once then stopped) so I ended up deleting it. I then downlaoded safari from the apple website and the computer tells me that I can't install it. it says that this system can't use this software. I then used disk utility to repair my disk permissions and it still doesn't work. This is frustrating.

    Hi
There is no downloadable version of Safari on the Apple web site for OS X Tiger. However, you can download a workable version by following these instructions thanks to Andy Ball, who posts in this forum. First though, questions:
You mentioned you "deleted" Safari. How did you do this? Did you drag Safari.app from your Applications folder to the trash (that would be the best approach). Did you delete any other related Safari folders? Hopefully not.
If Safari bounced once in the dock, but did not open, it is quite possible that the Safari Dock icon was corrupt. The usual remedy is to first double click on the Safari.app in your Applications folder to see if it opens from there. If Safari does open then the dock icon is corrupt. You would then drag the Safari dock icon to the trash can. Then, click and drag the Safari.app to the Dock to create a new icon.
If you need to reinstall Safari, follow these steps:
First, go to this site to obtain a zip file of Safari. On this site page, select "free", then on the following page you'll need to wait about 30 seconds for the target site options to appear. Select one of them, fill in the "alpha/numeric prompt", and the file will download.
Once the download is completed and the file unzipped, move the Safari.app to your Applications folder.
Go to the Utilities folder>Disk Utility and "repair permissions".
Back to the applications folder. Click on Safari.app and drag to the dock to create a new icon (remember to trash the old icon if you haven't done so).

  • Slow browsing - not just Safari -WHY?

I have been experiencing slow loading of pages in both Safari and Chrome - sometimes one is slow and the other OK, sometimes both are slow. When I say slow, I mean my home page takes 30 seconds to load and subsequent pages can be anywhere from 2 seconds to a minute or even hang up and won't load. In Safari I often get the "Localized string not found"... in Chrome I just get slowness with no error messages. So I guess you would probably say my Internet connection is to blame.
HERE'S THE WEIRD PART. I only have this problem on my iMac (purchased a month ago), not on my MacBook (purchased earlier this year). They are both running the same OS, the same apps, and are on the same network. Yet the desktop machine is slow and the laptop is fast. Apple phone support tried to explain to me that because the iMac can connect either through wifi or ethernet it is slower than the macbook which connects through wifi only. This seems *completely counterintuitive* to me. Anyway, their solution was to recommend buying a gigabit router--meaning Airport Extreme I guess--but if my current Netgear router can serve up fast Internet to my macbook why can't it do so to my iMac??

    Ok...
David... system updates such as Snow Leopard's v10.6.3 to v10.6.4 / and software updates from say Safari 4.0.5 to 5... those updates do not necessarily include fixes that will increase the speed at which Safari loads pages.
Before updating your software, always read the detail first.
About the v10.6.4 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4150
When it comes to Safari, if you had any Safari third party plugins installed prior to the Safari 5 update, they may not be compatible with Safari 5. Go here for help with that.
Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons and click Reset.
Your Safari preferences could be corrupted.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
And always repair disk permissions after all software updates are installed. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Safari history - how to restore from Time Capsule?

    Background...
I couldn't open Safari today (beachballing with no window opening whatsoever), presumed the "com.apple.Safari.plist" file was corrupted so deleted it from "~/Library/Preferences", and restored a copy using Time Machine from my Time Capsule from yesterday before I had the issue. Safari settings from yesterday restored and working.
    However...
My Safari History going back 2 years has deleted to just one month ago! How can I restore these from a previous Time Capsule backup? Is it just "History.plist" file from "~/Library/Safari" that needs to be restored, or also the one titled "HistoryIndex.sk" in the same location, and/or any others?
Also, do I need to restart machine after restoring all files needed, or should the history show immediately after just relaunching Safari?
Note: I tried doing the "History.plist" one only, yet still just get the one month of history showing. This is really urgent as I have sites in my 2 year browsing history I need to get to again!
Help very very gratefully received :-\

    jimthing wrote:
Though I am still finding that with circa 2 years worth of history, they may be starting to delete from the back-end after a while; so I presume there may be a theoretical max amount of sites and/or dates Safari will keep in there regardless of setting "Manually" for history deletion.
I doubt there's a maximum size specific to the History plist, but that (or corruption of it) would be the only limitation. And yes, plists do get corrupted with some frequency.
And I don't know, either, what would happen if the plist got to a maximum; whether you'd get a message, or it would drop the oldest entries.
That must be a huge+ file after 2 years! It's a bit surprising that it hasn't gotten corrupted before.
If your browsing history is that important, I'd suggest finding some other way to keep it that long, such as bookmarking the critical sites. That would take much less room (and be less subject to corruption) than the history of every site you've ever visited, every time.
And/or, there might be a 3rd-party app that would help. I don't know of any, but it might be worthwhile to look for one.

  • Problem Navigating Tabs in Safari

When I use the Shift+Command+Arrow (L or R) shortcut I can navigate thru my tabs with ease. Sweet. But if one of those Web pages has a search box the cursor automatically appears in the box on that page and I can no longer navigate to the next tab.
Open 2 tabs to Google to see what I mean.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi...
First go to your Safari menu bar top of your screen, click Safari > Empty Cache
If that didn't help, back to the menu bar again, click Safari > Reset Safari
Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, Safari preferences may be corrupted.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
If tabs function as they should, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to  the Preferences folder.

  • Safari allows 3rd party cookies and all cookies even when prefernces are set to "never allow" with Mac os 10.6.8

safari ALWAYS allows 3rd party cookies and all cookies even when set to "block cookies: always" and "from 3rd party and advertisers."  I have removed the website data, emptied the cache, reset safari, erased the history and it STILL dumps cookies.  (For example, if I go to the usgov weather website only I end up with 11 cookies, the top one being "addthis.com" listed as cashed in local storage.  But didn't I just empty the cache... multiple times??? Is my Safari application "broken" or "corrupt."  Can the application be renewed so that it actually does what it is commanded to do?

    Not using any extensions, Andy.
Allowed a guest account and tested that.  Lots of cache/cookies showed up for my "guest" that on face value, appeared 3rd party:  the familiar "addthis.com" cache and others including a facebook cache and I did not, nor have ever, participated in facebook. But it could be that the "trusted" site my virtual guest visited had a relationship with facebook such that my COMPUTER "friended" facebook even though my guest and I most certainly would have declined the invitation :-)  But what I really don't get is why washington post cookies keep showing up every single time.  Isn't that the absolute definition of 3rd party cookies?!
    forgive my rant.
On the other hand, when I logged out as guest, all data was automatically deleted, and when I relogged in as guest, it appeared that all the data, including cached data, had indeed been deleted.  But when I relogged in as myself, the same old garbage reappeared in the cache and cookie bin. The fact is, there appears to be no such thing as truly and completely emptying ones cache, resetting ones browser, or deleting ones cookies. They are here to stay.
(And, oh yes, I have tried logging out, turning off and on the computer right after performing emptying tasks, etc.)

  • JPEGs corrupted

Help I have corrupt JPEGs. The pictures show up fine in in thumbnail but when opened up in preview they only show half of the picture.
    Thanks again
    Carl

    Carl:
Export a couple of the problem jpgs to the desktop and open them with Preview or Safari. Are they corrupt in those applications?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Quit Safari, quits okay, but find CPU still being stolen

I use MenuMeters to watch the usage of my dual G4 CPUs, and I've noticed lately that my CPUs are often being used almost to the max, even with my being idle and no other apps doing anything important.
When I go into Activity Monitor, I find that Safari 3.2 is using HUGE amounts of CPU, even if it is NOT running (according to the Dock and my screen). I use Activity Monitor to quit the Safari and nothing bad seems to happen, just I GET my MAC BACK !
    Has anyone else experienced this?"

What I meant by "size" was the amount of RAM being used by Safari, which has been known to increase exponentially. For example, right now I have 52 tabs open (don't ask ). Per my activity monitor, Safari is alloted 958 MB of RAM and is using about 10 to 15 percent of the CPU (dual-core processors). By contrast on my MacBook Pro, Safari, with 21 tabs, has 200 MB of RAM allotted, using 11 - 14 percent of the CPU. Both machines are using the same Safari 3rd party items, however, more Flash related sites are open on the iMac.
Usually, high CPU spikes from Safari point to file corruption heating up the processor (I've seen a corrupted Flash plug-in trigger this effect), a poorly coded web site, or OS X system problems.
What utility do you use to repair HD? Short of TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior, I'd say other products on the market are somewhat lacking in their ability to pinpoint oddities on the drive.
