Safari 4.0 "Top Sites"

This annoying window can be gotten rid of by going to SAFARI>PREFERENCES>GENERAL.
Under New Window, change the selection from Top Sites.
Same thing for New Tabs.

If you want to open to a blank page or some home page for a new window or tab. Select preferences > general and select for new window and select for new tab from the pull down.
Seems to work on my 10.4.11 when I change them to “empty page” from “top sites”.

  • Safari forgets some Top Sites after closing

    Hello!
My Safari always seems to forget the Top Sites I set.
I have set all twelve Top Sites with my favorite Webpages.
When I quit Safari and start it again in the last row of Top Sites two of my favorites are gone and have been replaced by other randomly chosen Webpages.
I already tried to reinstall Safari by deleting the App and loading it again from apple.com.
I also deletet the TopSite.plist files and tried to reset Safari. None of these things worked.
Its funny though, that when I take a look inside the .plist the top sites are correct and in the correct order. Safari just doesn't display them correctly.
Does anyone have an idea? I like the Top Sites feature really a lot but its behavior right now is quite annoying.

    Hi,
    Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.safari.plist file to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari. Try Top Sites.
If that didn't help, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.

  • Questions on privacy and safari, browser history; top sites; private browsi

In one thread someone suggested that those concerned about the privacy of their web browsing and its history try Private Browsing. What are the consequences of Private Browsing? Does Private Browsing interfere with some of the web page features or javascript from working when I'm trying to access a page that has java or Flash? Will my bank's website load ok etc? I guess I was a little worried it would stop the showing of the last page visited and if so then hopefully that won't stop some sites from functioning.
Is Private Browsing the best way to go all around for those concerned about privacy loss in Safari or does it not really help much? I wonder why it isn't the default.
I want to be able to use my browser to access sites that don't load well when I use Firefox with NoScript, such as bank sites, but I do not want my browsing history to stay in view constantly, and I'm also upset at seeing it want to "learn" my browsing habits and try to suggest sites for me without my setting it to do this.
For this reason I will be setting Firefox or any other browser I feel is more private than Safari, possibly Camino, to be my default browser. I will probably only be using Safari when a site won't work without it, same as when I used to settle for Internet Explorer on my windows computer when Firefox didn't work.
I'm also concerned that I can't get that Google search bar out of my browser. I don't want Google keeping tabs of every site I visit. I'm not sure if Google has access to tracking every place I go if I never put any text into the Google search bar or how far into bed with Google Apple has now gone but I'm afraid of the privacy invasion possibilities.
Perhaps Google gets no info if I do not type anything into the google search bar. I wish I could drag it off the menu bar however. (If I want to go to google, I know how to type google.com for crying out loud).
I hope Apple will hold the line on its partners re: privacy in products like iPhone and Safari that work with its partners regardless of their tendencies to disrespect privacy.
Does anyone know if the fact that this Safari software wants to learn what my favorite sites are affects outside parties including Apple, Google, and/or others possibly getting access to info on my browsing habits?
If i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
Does hitting RESET clear things out in this regard? I'd like to use these tools if I could be sure that using Safari doesn't turn the computer into a spyware tool for outside entities, commercial interests and governmental interests to mine data from.

    Hello r:
If you think Safari, Firefox, or anything else will mask your browsing habits from someone who really wants to know, you are not being realistic.
I tend to discount justifications of privacy encroachments I sometimes encounter to the effect of "snooping is done by certain commercial and governmental parties as the way things 'just are', so shut up and don't worry". Customers who do not air their concerns and questions cannot have any expectation that the developer will be aware of their concern if they sit mute.
I sometimes pay for additional software to protect my privacy. I also use Firefox with Noscript and adblocking third party software rather than just sit with what the big corporations leave me with; there is a third party program for Safari I tried called PithHelmet for example, but then it seemed to not be loaded with the new Safari update and its developer dud not provide me any communication (although I got help here on how to find the program so I could remove it); so I may not use Safari as much compared to whatever browser I find has better privacy and security measures.
If you go to the Safari help menu and enter +"private browsing,"+ you will find a complete description of what that function does for you. In answer to one of your questions, it is not a default because one loses a good deal of functionality. I would be most perturbed if that was made the default.
Ok, I will try to learn the functionalities lost, thanks.
You can set the history to be deleted after one day (or longer). If you are concerned, it is quite easy to clear history before you sign off.<</div>
I've been using RESET to clear my history in the past; I assume it still works although Reset doesn't seem to permanently make certain cookies with future expiration dates go away permanently, which I find come back later even without my visiting a site for weeks and this was happening in the previous version of Safari too.
You can remove the Google search box (or anything else) from the menu bar. Right click on it. One option is +"remove item."+
That doesn't work in terms of just removing the Google search bar at the top right, I see.
I did not want to lose my blank for typing a URL; I only want the thing out to the right that says Google on it, which seems to use Google's search engine to go away. I certainly hope that every time I type a URL into the blank at the left top (which is not the part over to the top right that says Google and a magnifying glass) that I'm not having Google track my URLs I visit like they would if I put a search term into the blank at the top right, but maybe it does since the two are forcibly linked.
I guess I'd have to try Command L - Open Location in the Find menu if I want to try to go to a URL without using the URL blank at the top left I normally type in. I would only want to go to that trouble if typing in the top left blank for URLs results in Google tracking my URL visits like they certainly would if I typed in the top right google tool bar and hopefully Open Location does not result in the same issue.
if i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
I seriously doubt that Apple (or anyone else) is "reporting" anything about you to anyone. As you are no doubt aware, most web sites store cookies on your system when you visit that site. The information stored varies, but you can, of course, block cookies if you wish.
I have the ability to block cookies, and I use Noscript a lot too with Firefox (although that set up does not always work with a few webpages here and there, so sometimes I have to use Safari or Camino). I use Safari less and less because there is no Noscript type of third party software for it. The only time I feel I have no choice but to use Safari on my Mac is when I go to my Mobileme account.
My concern is of Top Sites "learning" my favorite sites and displaying to me the names of a lot of suggested URLs, as to who else is receiving that data; hopefully no one. Maybe I'll get to where i find info explaining that Apple and Google aren't collecting data about my "top sites" if I use that feature.
It's just that there has been an increasing amount of privacy intrusion in the commercial realm combined with a corporate arrogance in terms treating consumers as though there is no need to make any assurances or explanations to consumers to help them trust the privacy. Instead we get browbeaten by various parties about how stupid or obvious we are if we ask a question to remind the corporation it's an issue to those of us who want to feel comfortable with the privacy of the software we use.
I'll try to use the Feedback form to ask as well.
At the risk of stating the obvious, it is quite easy to find out all sorts of information about an individual if one is interested. If you are really concerned, I suggest you severely limit your use of the Internet.
I may well limit my use of the internet if what you say is true that there is no way to do any reading on the internet without being spied on by commercial and governmental interests.
    thanks

  • Safari 7.0 top sites remain blank

    Dear Safari specialists,
after upgrading my MacBook Pro 13" 2,53 GHz C2D (2009, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB SSD) from Lion 10.7.5 directly to Mavericks, the following problem arose with Safari: The browser no longer displays preview pictures for my top sites.
All I can see are black rectangles with a dark grey safari icon in the center of every top site preview:
Steps I took to isolate the problem:
    1) Pressing CMD+R in the top sites view. This caused the top sites' captions to change to the corresponding websites' current titles. So it seams reloading the top sites works, it just doesn't create preview pictures.
    2) The result made me suspect a permissions problem when writing new preview pictures to the disk. So I checked permissions on the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ folder and the "Webpage Previews" folder within. They're read&write for my (admin-level) user. I even changed them to read&write for everyone - but to no avail. I also ran "repair permissions" in the hard disk utility.
    3) I reset Safari using Safari's reset-window in the browser's menu. Everything was checkboxed, still no change. I also tried restarting the system after a reset and before reopening the browser.
    4) I closed Safari and removed the following folders and files:
    ~/Library/Safari/*
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/*
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/*
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess/*
    ~/Library/Coockies/*
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.*
    ~/Library/PubSub/*
    ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/com.apple.Safari.savedState/*
Then I opened Safari again to force the browser to recreate each and every file with correct contents and permissions. Nonetheless, I was greeted with the top sites page containing the same black rectangles instead of website preview pictures. Reloading didn't help, the result was the same as described in 1). So I put the old files back in their former places.
    5) I created a new user account, switched to that one, opened Safari there and tried reloading. Interestingly, the top site previews filled up the formerly black spaces. So in this new user account everything works as expected. Transfering the "Webpage Previews" folder contents to my regular user account even causes the corresponding preview pictures to appear in my regular safari - except the ones that weren't included in the other user account's Safari top sites selection, of course. This doesn't solve the problem, though, because once again the copied previews cannot be updated in my regular safari account. Pressing CMD+R doesn't change them back to the black rectangle state but simply leaves them untouched even though the website visible contents has changed in the meantime.
    6) Going to the console app revealed that during my attempts to reload the preview pictures (see 1) ), the following entries are created in system.log (excerpt):
    macbook-nick.fritz.box com.apple.WebKit.WebContent[1855]: tcp_connection_destination_prepare_complete 32 connectx to 2a00:1450:4005:809::101f#443 failed: 65 - No route to host

    macbook-nick.fritz.box com.apple.WebKit.WebContent[1855]: tcp_connection_handle_destination_prepare_complete 157 failed to connect
I'm not sure what these entries mean. My first idea was that there may be a network problem connecting to my top sites. This wouldn't explain, though, why they all load properly when opened directly in safari by entering their URL or when clicking on them in the top sites view. It also wouldn't quite explain why everything works fine in the second user account (see 5) ). The second thought was that maybe Little Snitch caused some disturbance in my network traffic that blocked Safari from fetching preview pictures (even though Little Snitch also runs in the second user account). But even when turning off all network filtering, the problem persists.
Now I've run out of ideas. One hypothesis left is that there's a database file hidden somewhere that needs to be updated in order to allow Safari to create a link to preview pictures which are only then created in the Library folder's subfolders. That database file may be corrupted, who knows. Besides the fact that I don't even know if such a database file exists, I have no clue where it coult be found.
So - any thoughts on this one? Any option I may have missed out on trying?
    Best,
    Nick

I found what may be the solution or at least a big step forward. Deactivating the preview picture function and turning it back on again made Safari finally create snapshots for my top sites and fill up the formerly empty rectangles. It worked like this:
    1) Close Safari.
    2) In the terminal application enter:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
    3) Open Safari, then close it again.
    4) In the terminal application enter:
    defaults delete com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy
    5) Open Safari again.
It's still not working exactly like in Safari 5, though. Preview pictures in top sites only seem to get updated when I click on them to visit the corresponding websites. It doesn't seem to happen in the background. So it doesn't present me with a little star icon to notify me of any unread new contents in the top sites view.
I'll have to dig in deeper to figure out if this is the intended behaviour for Safari 7.0 or if there's still something wrong. Any thoughts on this?

  • Safari 4's Top Sites and Cover Flow is missing!

So I downloaded the new Safari beta and tried it out. Top Sites and Cover Flow was missing and I couldn't find it anywhere. I installed the latest graphics driver for my computer but still no top sites. Ugh - THE PAIN!
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3, 75GB HD, 512 RAM, 96MB intel GRAPHICS.
    Please answer!!

is your graphics card compatible with DirectX 9.0 and,
also do you have DirectX 9.0?
if you don't you need to get it, without CoverFlow and TopSite's don't work

  • Blank page when opening Safari 4 - no top sites or cover flow

When I open Safari 4 Beta, I do not go to the home page that I have selected in Preferences or to any cover flow display of sites that I have visited, but to a blank page with the address "topsites://" that has a message on it which says, "Safari can’t open the specified address. Safari can’t open “topsites://” because Mac OS X doesn’t recognize Internet addresses starting with “topsites:”." In fact, I am never able to get any top sites or cover flow display at all. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Safari 4, most lately today, so that I have Version 4 Public Beta (5528.17). Any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

    HI,
    Try Open DNS
Try resetting Safari from the Menu Bar. Safari/Reset Safari. Check the top 5 buttons, click Reset.
Try deleting this file. com.apple.Safari.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
The only way to successfully uninstall Safari BETA 4 is to use the UNinstaller that came in the same folder when you downloaded Safari BETA 4. It doesn't really uninstall Safari, it just reverts your version number back to 3.2.1.

  • Why does safari open to top sites and not my homepage?

I recently accepted updates and now see that when safari opens it's in my top sites instead of my homepage.  I checked and my homepage is still listed when I check, but why doesn't that open anymore?

Thanks Alexandria, works like it did before.
I have two other things I'm noticing now and would like to get them back like they were previously:
    1)  Previously when I hit the bookmarks tab it would be laid out in the whole window.  When I hit it now, it's only on the left side of the screen and the top sites take up the rest of the screen.  I liked it better before where I could see my bookmarks on the full screen.
    2)  I notice the top sites now seem smaller.  Is there a way to have them the same size like they were before.
I'm new to Apple and the learning curve with this imac hasn't been easy.  I like keeping up with the updates, but hate when things change and you can't figure them out.  Seems like the simplest of things are so easy on a pc, but difficult on this imac.

  • Safari Prefetcher cripples Safari when selecting Top Sites

I've been having problems with the Safari Prefetcher process that seems to be behind Topsites.
It can be extremely slow and cause Safari to become unresponsive.
Is there a cache for topsites that can be deleted or reset?
I thought this was to do with running Safari in Snow Leopard 64bit mode but 32 bit has the same issue.
    Any help appreciated.

Go to Safari's menu--->Safari--->Reset Safari--->Check the Reset Top Site box and hit reset. There might be other things in the reset box you might want to clear or rest too.

  • Why does safari randomly load top sites page?

    Advise needed?
I have recently updated to Mavericks and un the latest safari on my Macbook pro, but i have noticed since I updated to Mavericks that Safari sometimes randomly just loads the top sites page rather than the requested web page like bbc.co.uk etc.
Any ideas of what is causing this or how i can completely reinstall safari?

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Safari Keeps Adding Top Sites On It's Own

    Hello,
I have a problem with safari keep on adding top sites on it's own. I've tried resetting it but still no fix.
    Any ideas?

That's the way Top Sites works. Safari automatically places the sites you use most in the Top Sites view. You can permanently mark a site as a Top Site by clicking the Edit button (bottom left corner in Top Sites), then click the thumbtack icon on a particular site. However, unless you fill the entire view with permanent sites, the remaining space will be fluid, depending on what sites you have used most.

  • Safari removing pinned top site???

There is one website that I recently added to my top sites. I pinned it, as I do to all of my top sites. The website will stay in my top sites for a few days, and then it will suddenly disappear. I'll re-add it, and it'll disappear again. I've repeated this whole process several times. What is wrong with my Safari top sites?
Safari 7.0.6 on a Macbook Air.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If thata doesn't help, back to the Finder.
From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the desktop.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test again. If that helped, move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Trash.
And make sure your Mac's OS X softtware is up to date. Click the Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update.

  • Secure Sites in Safari 5.0 Top Sites

Is it possible to add secure websites to Safari's Top Sites? Every time I add the secure sites I want and restart Safari the sites disappear from my top sites page.
    Thanks for your help
    Terron

I know this is an old thread but thought i would post a solution to this problem.
You can add a secure page to the Top Sites page, but no the conventional way by dragging the URL across.
    Instead:
    • Bring up the page you want to add.
    • Go to +Bookmarks > Add Bookmarks (⌘D)+
    • Then select +Top Sites+ from the drop down menu.
    • Click Add and you're done.

  • How to TURN OFF Safari 4.0 Top Sites  on 10.4.11?

The June 16 posting by Epochmaker responded to this question and says how, but the info doesn't suit 10.4.11. It says "go to Safari Preferences>General> New Windows open with: . . . . etc.
Please, how does one get rid of these new Safari 4.0 desktop "improvements" on 10.4.11?

If you want to open to a blank page or some home page for a new window or tab. Select preferences > general and select for new window and select for new tab from the pull down.
Seems to work on my 10.4.11 when I change them to “empty page” from “top sites”.
