Safari 4 and Reader 9.1

Hello,
I just used automatic update on my powerPC to upgrade to OSX 10.5.8. This update also installed Safari 4. I then installed Reader 9.1 (latest version). The reader install was clean, no previous versions on my machine. When I opened Reader for the first time, it did everything it needed to to install the plugin for Safari.
Now, when I browse PDF's, if I have Reader set to display pdfs in the browser and I try to open a pdf through a link with the property target="_blank" (i.e. set to open in a new window or tab), the plugin hangs. If I open a document through a normal link (target="_self"), documents open normally. If I uncheck the Reader preference for displaying documents in the browser (i.e. using the plugin), documents download and display in Reader properly.
Is the plugin currently not working properly in Safari 4, or is there some way to configure it so that links that open pdfs in a new window/tab don't hang?
I came across this problem because multiple users of the website I work on complained about this problem, and I was troubleshooting their reports, so this isn't a one-off problem. They are the ones who provided me with the software versions, that I then duplicated on my dev machine and immediately duplicated the problem. This is going to happen to any powerPC/OSX10.5 users who keep up on their security updates and their Reader updates, and possibly to other Apple platform and OS version combinations as well.

Klaus,
My wife had the same problem on Filogixdms/webforms 4.4. It just downloaded the file and showed nothing but script. Running snow lepoard and the latest version of Safari on a new IMac.
In applications go to Safari and left click, and go to get info. Change to open in 32 bit mode.
Then go to adobe.com and down load the latest version of reader for Mac eventhough it's not for snow lepoard and install it.
Once I did that all worked well. Was able to create kits, fill out forms, save etc.
Hope it works for you.

  • How do I download in Safari and read pdf documents on ipad?

Have brand new iPad and want to download a pdf document using Safari as browser and read on the iPad.  I have Adobe Reader app and Files app.  iCloud is enabled.  Reading List only shows download page.  I can download this document quickly on my Laptop.  How can I access and read the  document on my iPad without sending it to myself?

Tap on the pdf document in order to open it, When you have the PDF file open on the screen - tap anywhere on the open document and an arrow will apper in the upper right corner of the screen - tap that arrow and a window will popup for Open In options. Select Open In Adobe Reader and the PDF will open in Adobe Reader and it will be saved in that app.

As this is an iPad forum, directions for solving a problem on a desktop or laptop probably aren't what the OP is looking for.
The ipad 2 has a mobile version of safari, really? That will be the first to go when i get my Ipad2 friday, i cant stand mobile versions of browsers.
The version of Safari on the iPad is the iOS version as, of course, the MacOS version doesn't run on the iPad. If you don't like, there are many other browsers available in the App Store. I'm fond of iCab Mobile.
You may also be confusing mobile browsers with the mobile version of websites. Whether or not you see the mobile version of a website is controlled by the website.
    Best of luck.

You don't provide any details, but from the sound of it you are trying to open an online PDF in a browser that does not use the Adobe Reader plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • Pdf files display not correctly in Safari and Preview but in Adobe Reader and Chrome correctly

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

How can I download and read a SWF file on IPad 2? The message returned is that Safari cannot download that file

SWF files are flash files, which are not supported on the iPad : http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/
If you want to play the file then the iSwifter or Skyfire browser apps might work (they don't work on all flash sites) but you won't be able to download it

  • Acrobat Pro and Reader fighting for Safari frameworks folder...

We manage hundreds of Macs of which most are at 10.4.8.
We have both Acrobat Pro and Reader 7.0.8 installed on all Macs.
Sometime within the last few weeks something has changed on our systems (eg: upgrading from something under 10.4.8 to 10.4.8) that is causing Acrobat Pro and Reader to fight for the Safari.app/Contents/Frameworks/ folder. This folder contains aliases to either Pro or Reader frameworks within that Acrobat app's own frameworks folder (...Acrobat Pro.app/Contents/Frameworks/)
This issue is that the end user is prompted to authenticate for either Reader or Pro to "repair itself" which it is just changing the aliases within the Safari Frameworks folder to point to their own frameworks.
If I set Preview as the default pdf viewer and then delete Acrobat Reader so that only Preview and Acrobat Pro are on the client, then it seems to work beautifully without authentication request. We would like to keep Reader on the systems though. We use Sassafras' Keyserver with a limited number of licenses for Acrobat Pro.
Has anyone else experienced this? Found a solution, etc?
    Thanks!

I agree with rikbarry - I finally reinstalled Acrobat, then ran the
update to 9.4.5. The updater took nearly an hour to finish which can't
be normal, but the software appears to be the correct version now.
I work for a very small graphic design company and use an older emac
that has pretty much reached its shelf life for many apps and OS.
Could my aging computer be contributing to the problem?
Because we depend heavily on pdf workflow, I chose to reinstall
WITHOUT running the uninstaller first, as the 9.4.4 version was at
least still functioning. I was somewhat surprised that it worked, and
I am NOT looking forward to the next updater.

    Please help me!!!!

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.

Using Mac 10.9.2 and Reader 11.0.6 and Safari 7.0.2, problem seems to be linked to Safari
Files - using "save as" (.pdf) or "print as" (.pdf) appear as adobe single-page blank documents.  When attempting to open them the following error message appears: "Adobe Reader could not open "filename.pdf" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
Files created under previous versions of Reader are fine.  No problem converting an existing .doc to .pdf using  Reader 11.0.6
    Any suggestions?

    Hi ramsey32 ,
Thank You for posting in the forums. Kindly help with the information listed below for further assistance.
    1) Does the PDF open fine in safari
    2) Do you get a floating toolbar at the bottom, if yes, choose the save icon from there to save the PDF
    3) Do the files open fine with Preview?
    Thanks,

  • Using mac os x w/safari and up to date adobe reader, can't print.

When I get a PDF bill image on safari and try to print it I get an Adobe Msg. "Can't print this".  When I switch to Firefox browser  I am able to print the same.  Under Safari I have also saved the document and open Adobe Reader to print the saved file and still get the can't print msg.  I'm using the up to date reader software.  My MacBook is using OS X with Safari ver. 6.1.6.  Can someone offer some help?

    Hi Murraysw,
You might try printing any other PDF file using Safari and then check.
Please share the screenshot of the exact error message that you get.
You might need to install the updated version of Safari browser for MAC OS X i.e. Safari 7
    Hope to hear from you.

  • How to undo Safari copying bookmarks, history, favorites, and reading list from Macbook Pro to iMac after Yosemite update?

I just updated my iMac 27inch Mid 2011 to Yosemite 10.10.2.  I have a Macbook Pro that I primarily use for everyday stuff. I upgraded to Yosemite a while ago on my macbook. Now that I upgraded my iMac, it transferred everything saved in Safari on my macbook pro to my iMac. My favorites, history, bookmarks, and reading list were copied over. This is driving me nuts! I had a separate set of data saved on the iMac because I use it for different purposes. All of the original bookmarks, favorites, history, etc. on my iMac are now gone. I logged out of iCloud (which was a feature I did not enjoy when upgrading to Yosemite) yet all of the safari data from my laptop is still cloned onto my iMac. Please tell me there is a way to undo this or refresh safari pre-Yosemite update!
    Thank you!

Then there's no way to recover the lost data. You will lose every bit of data you have if you don't start backing up.

  • Safari 7 Bookmarks and Read List Not Synching with iCloud

Safari does not synch bookmarks or reading list with iCloud.  Cloud tabs does work. Everything else works.
When I turn the sync setting on/off in iCloud (control panel) it asks me if I want to merge and I say yes each time.  No change.  I can add bookmarks normally.
I did the checklist Apple suggests - and made sure I was linked to teh right account, have internet access, ect... The only thing I can not confirm is port numbers - but this machine is at work, next to my other iMac that is working perfectly (on Mavs too)
So far I've done each of these 2-5 times each:
    Restarted
    Reset all in Safari Pref
    Cleared all extensions
Unlinked my iCloud account in Control Panel>iCloud - Safari
Unlinked the entire account and deleted everything (3 times)
Deleted all traces of Safari; library, plsit, etc. (except the program - not allowed)
    re-linked to Keychain (3 times)
    Out of ideas
    Any suggestions appreciated
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks in advance

Having the same problem as you David, I've just about gone nuts trying to solve it but Bookmarks and Reading Lists are not syncing across my iPad Mini, iPhone and Mac. When I've dug into the console files on my Mac it's reporting that the SafariDAVClient is crashing like a fiend, seems to be trying to access a file that either doesn't exist or was moved o_O
Anyone have any ideas? I've also resorted to Apple's recommendations as well as to solutions posted around the forums, with no luck whatsoever. I've even edited and purged my bookmarks down to only the stuff I really think I should keep. Also tried to keep it empty and adding a fresh new bookmark. Nada...

I found this discussion about three or four months ago. I was having the same problem with Safari not opening, along with my other login items.
The tip posted by Linc on Oct 3, 2011 9:22 AM, resolved the issue.
    Thanks Linc!
HOWEVER... Today, all of the sudden... Out of out of the blue... I have the same problem, again!?
I tried removing, then re-adding, the URL file from the log in items, automatic open list.
    It did not work?
Does anybody have any ideas/solutions regarding this issue? This is becoming VERY aggravating!
