Safari 4 Beta vs. Safari 4 Final - Title Bout!

I like my Safari 4 Beta - with the Pointum tweaks - very much; I really don't want to "downgrade" to Safari 4 Final. That being said, I'd rather not d/l it unless absolutely necessary.
The question (multi-part): what will I miss out on if I don't use Final 4? Will updates to other apps suffer if I stick with Safari 4 Beta until the sun shines brightly for Final? Will I rue the day, etc., etc.?
Will George and Alice ever find true love again? Stay tuned for "As the Mac Turns..."

P.S. to Klaus -- I truly do not intend to come off smarmy or sarky, and in point of fact, I have waited over 2 weeks to comment on your post because I believe you have a sincere desire to be helpful.
However, your post did not address my questions, particularly, "...what will I miss out on if I don't use Final 4? Will updates to other apps suffer if I stick with Safari 4 Beta...."
As I noted in my post and in my original signature, I am a long-time Mac user and I had been happily using the Safari 4 Beta from the day it was released, so I was/am neither a newbie nor unfamiliar with the features and intentions of the Safari 4 browser.
For users who are fortunate to have flawless connections, state-of-the-art hardware, who possess complete faith in the "newer is better" credo, and who have the time, willingness, and ability to endlessly tweak their system and their apps, I have no doubt they experience Safari 4 Final as satisfactory.
But for the rest of the world -- ordinary people trying to do their jobs and deliver their products/services on time to clients or bosses or the marketplace, who have mercurial internet connections and hardware that must be made to last and amortized "just one more year" -- Safari 4 Final is not a mere disappointment, it is a hindrance.
When Apple, of all companies, chose to prematurely release as "final" a product so integral to one's experience of the internet and computing as a browser is, it is tantamount to requiring Joe the Carpenter to become an architect just to drive a nail with a hammer.

  • Cannot Install Safari Beta

I updated to the 10.4.10. After the update Safari would no longer open and would crash every time. I deleted Safari and then tried to reinstall Safari (the beta) or any of the other Safari's (1.0, 1.2, 2.0.1) I have a 1.2 GHz Ibook /512 with 10.4.10. Anyone have any ideas?

Safari crashes possibly because you are using incompatible versions of either Safari Plus (for cookies) and/or SafariStand. They both have updated versions compatible with 10.4.10 and Safari 3.
Important to get Safari 2.0.4 back on your machine before you can update to Beta 3. Also, important you update any plug-ins or InputManager items for compatibility purposes with 10.4.10 and/or Safari 3.
    To reinstall Safari 2.0.4:
Have a look at this Apple article for installing other software, including Safari, from the Tiger DVD - see the section titled More custom reinstallation options with Mac OS X 10.4.
    Other Steps
Move the Safari.pkg file in the HD>Library>Receipts folder to the trash.
As a precaution, prior to reinstalling Safari, move your Safari folder, found via the Finder in your Home Folder>Library to the Desktop. It has your bookmarks, history etc. Once the reinstall is completed, move the folder back to its original location writing over the newly created folder.
Remember too, the version of Safari you install will be specific to the Version on your installer DVD. Therefore, run Software Update and see if Safari updates appear. If not, reapply the 10.4.10 combined update to bring Safari up to the current version.
"Repair Permissions" via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder when you are finished.

    Try deleting Flash cookies.

  • Can't install the new Safari beta

I've got a problem installing Safari beta 3.
I am always told "You cannot install Safari Beta 3 on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
Any ideas what is going on? I have plenty of space. That isn't the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Safari must reside in the top level of the Applications folder for the installer to work. If you put Safari in a sub-folder, or moved to a different location, then return it to the correct location, then try the Installer.
If at any point you choose to revert to Safari 2.0.4, you must use the Uninstaller that is found in the Installation package. Any other method will create havoc in the operating system.
With either the Install or Uninstaller, do not use the computer while it is running. You'll be instructed to restart the computer once it completes.

  • Preview in Safari Beta for Win not working

    Hello All,
    Anyone else having this problem?
I installed the new Safari beta for Windows (xp) and added it
to my Preview in Browser list in Dreamweaver, pointing it to
safari.exe, but when I try to preview, Safari opens and displays
the home page, not my Dreamweaver project page.
    Any thoughts,

    Hi Scott,
Safari beta for win has a number of problems. Loading local
    pages is one of
them. I found if I preview in another browser like FF from DW
    and then copy
and paste the page URL into Safari it works sometimes. Search

  • Troubles with Safari after downloading Safari Beta for Mac

I recently installed the new Safari Beta and have been having problems ever since. My browser constatly crashes and closes. It is a real pain in the arse. Is there any way to go back to the previous non-Beta version of Safari so i can stop this problem?
Thanks and have a great weekend!

  • Activation issues related to Safari Beta 3 uninstall

I am wondering if others have had this experience: It seems that if Safari Beta 3 is installed and then uninstalled, it may still leave behind software that prevents login of Safari 2 and iTunes (Version 7.3) into secure web sites. This includes the initial activation of the iPhone. One connects the iPhone to the computer (my PowerBook G4 Aluminum) and iTunes keeps looking for the Apple Store and ultimately does not connect. A similar issue occurs with Safari 2 (if 3 Beta was uninstalled before). In Safari 2, dot Mac, banking, etc; any site that requires a secure connection will continue to try to connect and ultimately time out. I have had to switch to FireFox to log into this forum! Safari 2 could not do it. I suspect many people are having problems with iPhone activation and are mistakenly thinking that the servers are overloaded (when the are not). I switched to an older PowerBook and my iPhone activated in 3 minutes. This older computer had never seen Safari 3. I beleive Safari 3 is not completely uninstalled and may cause secure website connection failure in iTunes and Safari 2.

I am the author of both posts. At least on my computer, the secure proxy was the problem and not Safari 2 or 3. Actually, Safari 2 works fine and now I am testing Safari 3 and it works fine with secure web pages. I think the initial problem with activation of my iPhone was due to the Secure Proxy being checked (I'm not sure why it was) and iTunes was looking for a secure proxy and would not connect to the iTunes Store to activate the iPhone.

  • Safari Beta 3 for Mac Will Not Display Pages

I am a Web designer who evaluates my work in various Web browsers, and I decided that I wanted to see how Safari 3 will deal with some of my designs. I installed the beta of Safari 3 on my PowerBook this morning. The install went fine, but when I try to get Safari to load any pages, it displays a blank screen. The progress bar shows the page loading but then...nothing.
I have downgraded back to Safari 2 and it is working fine on my machine.
Any ideas as to why Safari 3 won't render pages or if there is a preference I need to rebuild to make it work properly?
    Thank you.

    Hi David,
I had the same problem, but after reading up a bit, it seems like the issue (in my case anyway) is caused by any Input Managers installed (home/library/input managers).
For me, it was SafariTidy, but there are other culprits as well... remove any items you have in there and see if that helps!

  • How do I uninstall the Safari Beta version?

I'm using Firefox to post this since the beta version of Safari went belly up a couple of days ago. It's not loading many of my usual daily websites that I need access to.
When I tried to log in HERE I got this:
    http://solisstyle.com/ims/pic.php?u=4562lQs3D&i=74179
I searched the Apple website for Safari Beta 3 (& all versions of that phrase) and came up with nada so I was hoping that someone here would have some info.
I want to get rid of the beta version and go back to the previous stable version.
    Thanks in advance!
PS - What I'm looking for is the Safari beta file to download. I made the mistake of deleting the beta package that contained the uninstaller since it WAS working so well.
    Live & learn.

The uninstaller with beta 3.0 will not uninstall the program because I don't have a restorable version of Safari. ????? is this a weird catch 22? Of course I don't have it, it un-installed 2.1 when it installed the beta. Now Adobe won't install because of safari and safari won't uninstall because of safari and I cannot find a copy of safari 2 (only updates that need safari2) I'm going in and killing anything to do with safari.. this doesn't make me happy. I'm officially waiting on OSX 10.5 for a while.

  • Safari Beta for Mac

Are there improvements in Safari Beta that would make it a good reason to update Safari 2.04 on my Macbook Pro w/OS X? I will not be using windows. Thanks

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I have enjoyed using Safari 3, especially In-line Find, expanded text boxes, better spotlight function in the Bookmarks Manager, improved tab function and faster rendering speed. Some "bugs" still exist (nature of a Beta release) such as retaining Auto-fill information for forms, in some instances slow Bookmark folder or menu rendering, and very minor instability on certain web sites. More information can be found here and here.
If you use any 3rd party Safari add-ons, such as SAFT, PicLens, or SafariStand, you'll need to upgrade the plug-ins before running Safari. Also, 3rd party PithHelmet and AcidSearch are not compatible with Safari 3.
In the PDF realm, if you use Adobe Acrobat or Reader as your PDF source, you'll need to install their most recent versions for Safari 3 compatibility.
When installing Safari 3, do not use the computer for other tasks. If you need to revert to Safari 2, the only way to do so is via the Uninstaller included in the Installation package.

  • Safari Beta crashing while JavaScript enabled

My OS is Windows 2000 Pro. Whereas Apple don't mention Win2k in the system requirements, I know there's plenty of Safari beta setups which are ok with this OS.
But on my Windows 2000 sp4 PC, everytime I visit a page embedding some Javascript code, Safari 3.04 is crashing immediately, providing no Dr Watson debug record...
I tried some developer versions too, 3.1 (525.6) and the fresh 525.9, with the same result. If I disable Javascript in preferences, Safari won't crash anymore, but obviously Javascript code will not run.
Any ideas there? Is it a windows 2000 specific issue?

I can confirm this for my W2K SP4 home machine, exactly the same symptoms (including problems capturing a Dr. Watson dump...).
Disabling JavaScript fixes it. Also, the problem did not occur for me up until Safari 3.0.3, and only got introduced with 3.0.4, and then continued in 3.1.
As noticed in some other posts, the situation with regards to W2k support for Safari seems to be a bit complicated, as it is offered by ASU as an update on my machine, and the installer does not produce any notice about incompatibility.
Also (my gut feeling as a software developer :-)) the differences between 2000 and XP at the level that is "interesting" to a portable runtime like JavaScript should be so minor that this feels rather like a general bug that happens to be exposed on W2k, as opposed to a genuine incompatibility.

  • Safari beta "game over"

I have 10.4.11 os x and tried to make the safari beta 3 fonts bigger with safari enhancer. After that I could not anymore open Safari.I can not uninstall,I can not install older versions.
I installed 10.4.11 combo updater - no result.I made Disk Utility repair - no result. Please help me what to do and what did I wrong.
    Thanks
    Robert

If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webcore on which other applications like iTunes, Mail etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.

  • I like Safari beta.  I have a question or two

Sometimes rather than the image, I get a question mark or what looks like a lego block.
    Whats up with that?
    -MrVegas
Dual Core Intel   Windows XP Pro

This "lego block" stands for a missing plug-in. Hopefully, you could download one somewhere or at worst not. The cup with the question mark stands for the non working java plugin.
Hope this helps till the next beta of Safari for Windows is out.

  • Server 2008 - Safari Beta 3 crashes on launch: DEP problem?

On Server 2008 (Standard, June CTP, x84), Safari Beta 3 crashes as soon as it is launched. My guess is that it's a Data Execution Protection (DEP) problem, because the error text and icon are similar to those involving DEP violations.
Has anyone encountered this behavior - or solved it?
    Details:
    1. I actually did solve it, using some combination of adding Safari-related dll's to the DllNXOptions Registry key, and using the latest nightly build of WebKit.dll. Unfortunately, I can't replicate my success.
    2. When Safari is launched, the Menu bar and URL bar are displayed; then the error message appears.

Update 2: this can be fixed by logging on as another user (User2) and deleting the profile of the user (User1) for whom Safari won't launch.
When User1 logs on again, a new profile is created; Safari launches and runs properly under the new profile.
At the time I noticed the problem, only User1 had logged on. As a guess, I logged on remotely as User2 - Safari launched and ran properly. That suggested that something about User1's original profile was the cause.
