Safari 4 Bookmarks in Address Bar

How do I get them to go away? I don't want to see what I bookmarked every time I type letters into the Address bar.

Hi,
Bar Top Sites, the same functionality exists in Safari 3.
If you still want to revert, use TimeMachine if you use it or revert using your last backup. If you have neither, the simplest and safest route is to perform an [Archive & Install|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710] of OS X.

• FF 5.0 immediately disabled all my bookmarks, my address bar, and my search bar.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard 64-bit on a 3GHz dual quad-core Mac Pro with 6gbs of ram, and terrabytes of open space.
Within two hours of originally installing FF 5.0, i noticed that my bookmarks had stopped working (both in the bar, and in the list) – even with a right-click 'open in a new window' command. Then i realized that my address bar had stopped working also, as well as the search bar adjacent to it.
Since it is no longer possible to download FF 4.0, I was fortunate enough to find the original still resident on my machine, and reverted. That wasn't sufficient though, i also needed to delete the .plist file for everything to start working again.
Then the damn thing downloaded 5.0 in the background and reinstalled itself AGAIN; and my bookmarks stopped working AGAIN. This time i immediately reverted to 4.0 before it had a chance to start altering the .plist, and i was fine. The first thing i did, however, was to disable the auto-update feature immediately.
This version of 5.0 was refusing to be deleted however; even after a reboot, and then an option + delete. This version forced me to open up the package contents and delete the items in there in groups, until the FF 5.0 icon would permit the trash to be emptied with it being present. (And yes, I changed its permissions to permit deletion by anyone; so that issue should never have occurred either.)

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

• Safari - Where'd my address bar go?!

Hey y'all!
My dad has an iMac, and he was on Safari one day when he realized that his address/URL bar was missing. We have tried to no prevail to find out how to get it back. Please help - it is a minor problem that has now turned majorly annoying. Thank you!

Then go to View > Customize Toolbar and choose the Address Bar field if that's the only thing missing, or choose the Default Set of icons at the bottom if everything is missing and drag them into place.

I recently upgraded to FF4 RC2 from FF 3.6.15. Now I don't have a Bookmarks toolbar with all my favorite websites below the address/location bar. Under FF Options the Bookmarks Toolbar IS CHECKED but none of my websites are shown that were in FF ver 3.6.15 ? I do have all my bookmarks in far right icon on the URL location line but I don't know how to add the specific bookmark to the Bookmarks Toolbar?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try resetting toolbars. Firefox button > options > Toolbar layout > press the 'Restore default set' button.

• Safari 6.0 Search / Address Bar

Hi
Under Safari preferences you can select your search engine, but how can one localize the search? E.g. for South Africa: use google.co.za, not .com.
Cheers,
Mike

Well Safari crashed when I started poking around preferences and deleting certain websites that stored cookies, so I restarted my computer and the problem fixed itself.

• I have a pc, and i accidentally deleted the address bar in my safari browser and no longer have any view options to get it back

I have a pc, and i accidentally deleted the address bar in my safari browser and no longer have any view options to get it back. I uninstalled and reinstalled safari twice, but the address bar still isn't there and neither are the view options. If there anyway to get it back?

I'd try the following user tip with that:

• Can't enter any text in Safari address bar. Why?

I can't enter any text into the Safari address bar. The keyboard is working fine as it works in all other applications?
Any ideas??
Thanks.

I understand. Close the window, and open a new one. Try the Address Bar. If no go, try Safari from another User Account. I'm curious if the Address Bar works there. If it doesn't, then you'll need to reinstall Safari.
Just in case you need this: Here is guidance from Apple on how to set up the account. You can ignore step 7 in the article.
Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.
Log-on to the new account and start Safari. If the address bar works in the new account, then your problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means a system-wide problem.

• HELP: Safari Address Bar is missing

Does anyone know what I should do to get my address bar to come back? I have been using my mac mini for a few weeks, including Safari and one day last week when I turned on the PC and Safari my address bar was gone. I have gone into the view tab several times and tried to get the address bar to return but it is missing. I have rebooted and I have reset Safari and still no address bar. What can I do? Thanks

Hi
Go to the View Menu>Customize Address Bar. This will open the Icon panel. You'll see an "Address and Search" bar. Click/Drag it to the Address Bar area of the browser window. Select "done".

• Deleting urls in the address bar?

please excuse me if i am posting my question in the wrong forum.
How do i delete urls that appear in my address bar?
thanks, in advance
Ryan

Hello Ryan and Welcome to Apple Discussion.
if you are asking about deleting a url in Safari, then you are in the wrong forum you should be in Apple Safari Discussions However, it is understandable to get disoriented in the forums.
To answer your question (if Safari), click in the address bar on the little icon on the far left of the url. in some urls it may look like the default "world" or it may have some other icon there. it will select the enitre addres even the stuff that may not be visible. then just click delete or start typing the new url.

• Address Bar problems

Hi all,
I just got my Macbook as a gift from my Partner and I love it! I have a question about Safari and using the address bar.
Basically when I use other browsers you are able to click on the address bar and see past visited websites this is not the case with Safari. How can I set it so this feature is available? I suppose the main question would be if Safari can actually do this?
Dave

Thanks for the replies. I have tried the suggestions and when you open a new browser window it does indeed realize that you have been to that site before.
The problem is I am used to using Firefox where you are able to go up to the address bar and click on the little down arrow and view all of the sites you have visited and not have to type anything it the bar at all. This allow you to see where you have been and select the website you want without any typing.
Does Safari have this option?

• Firefox is crashing or comes up with Chrome something in the address bar and clears my page, why?

For some reason Firefox keeps clearing my page and something with 'Chrome' in the address bar pops up along with a second set of menu, bookmarks, and address bar below my existing ones. If I click on anything besides the address bar it disappears. I've uninstalled Google Chrome and Firefox. (thinking that Google Chrome might be somehow interfering with FF) I then re-installed my previous version of FF with no results. I took it off again and then installed the newest version of FF. I've ran several scans on my computer with SuperAntiSpyware, cleared my history/cache . Nothing has changed and I'm very irritated now. Either someone tell me how to fix this or I'm switching to another browser.

You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use a Google Lucky search.

• Safari address bar - bookmarks

When you click the address and search bar, your bookmark favorites and frequently visited sites show up. This to be honest is worse than a pop-up ad...it blocks my view from the page I am looking at, my favorites bar, and the tabs it is covering. Its super annoying and I don't know why Apple decided to do this. I know the simple solution is just to switch to some other browser, but I'd still rather use Safari. So, how can I remove this obstruction from my address bar?

• What happened to address bar in safari under Mountain lion

I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday. Now, in safari, I no longer have an address bar. In customize toolbar, I see there is only the option to add/have 'search google or enter an address'. So have they combined this field? If so, in the old address bar field, there was a star to click on to add the page to our bookmarks, which opened the list and let us choose a folder. I no longer have that option.
Any help?
michelle

It is now a unified address and search bar. there is a + button in the Customize Toolbar in the View menu item. This will allow you to choose what folder to add your page.

• Safari address bar search behaviour

Hi,
I am a recent convert to the Mac platform and since moving over I have experienced a number of problems with Firefox. The most marked problem is very poor flash video (YouTube) performance i.e. choppy & stuttering playback until entire video has been loaded, but overall it is slow and sometimes hangs (spinning ball) for no apparent reason.
I have tried Safari and have found it's performance to be wonderful compared to Firefox, and there are no problems with flash video. However I have some issues with the address bar search behaviour and I am wondering whether this is normal or not.
In Firefox, when I type something into the address bar, search results from history and bookmarks appear. The same thing happens in Safari, but it seems the only way to get a bookmark to appear is to type the actual domain address, not the name of the bookmark. Also, if a bookmark has a subdomain other than www, then that must be typed otherwise the address won't appear.
For example, if I have a bookmark as follows:
Apple - Support - Discussions - Forum Home - http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
I can't bring that site up by typing apple, support or forum in the address bar, I have to type the subdomain name discussions in order for it to appear.
I am posting to ask whether this is normal behaviour and whether it can be changed so that address bar search can include the bookmark name as well as the domain name itself. Thanks for your help,

Yes, it's perfectly normal; and no, you can't change the behavior to recognize the page name of the actual URL. You can always send feedback to Apple and request that feature; they might actually do it sometime in the future. Use this URL:
