Safari 5.0.2 great speed increase

Does anyone else see a huge speed increase? The slow load times seem corrected. This is the best version in a very very long time.

Agreed, although I would not call the speed increase 'huge' - all versions of Safari 4 and 5 have loaded pages in less than a second for me.

  • Airport Extreme Upgrade Speed Increase???

    1) We currently have an Airport Extreme version 7.6.4 in our home. What version of wireless is this running? How do we determine this?
    2) How much speed will we gain if we upgrade to the newest version of the Airport Extreme which offers next-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology (assuming that all of the portable devices in the house are upgraded as well to the newest technology)?
    3) As part of this query, we have a Comcast modem that feeds straight into our current old Airport Extreme. To get any of the hoped for speed increases, would we have to do anything with this Comcast/Xfinity cable modem?
Sorry these are such basic questions that likely reflect my poor understanding of this technology. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Last question first.
    3) As part of this query, we have a Comcast modem that feeds straight into our current old Airport Extreme. To get any of the hoped for speed increases, would we have to do anything with this Comcast/Xfinity cable modem?
The Internet connection speed on your network will not improve. That speed is limited by your modem and the plan that you have with your provider.
Right now, the current AirPort Extreme that you have is capable of far greater speeds than your service provider can ever hope to deliver, so a new AirPort Extreme will not provide any improvement in terms of Internet performance.
) How much speed will we gain if we upgrade to the newest version of the Airport Extreme which offers next-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology (assuming that all of the portable devices in the house are upgraded as well to the newest technology)?
The wireless speed capability will double to triple over what you have now, but these higher speeds will only be realized when you have both an 802.11ac router and 802.11ac capable devices.
There are no 802.11ac capable iPhones or iPads, so you will pick up faster speeds on a new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or iMac, etc.
The faster speeds will only help you if you are copying data from one computer to another or making backups of one device to another.
As mentioned previously, your Internet connection speeds will remain the same that they are now.
We currently have an Airport Extreme version 7.6.4 in our home. What version of wireless is this running? How do we determine this?
Please look on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme to locate the model number. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers.  Example.....A1143......A1301.....A1354.....A1408.
Post back with the model number, and we will tell you a bit more about the product.

  • Increased download speed = increased ping

    Hi,
After some wrestling of biblical proportions with BT Technical and having had 5 engineers out since January a faulty section of cable was replaced last week. This has led to three changes in our broadband service, two good, one very bad.
    1. The download speed increased from around 0.98 mb/s to 2.10 mb/s - Great.
    2. Incoming phone calls no longer caused the broadband connection to reset - Great.
    3. The ping has increased from a steady 48ms to 96ms - Bad.
For info I have a Home Hub 3 with Option 3 package and the above numbers came from www.speedtest.net. This issue is of particular annoyance with XBox-Live which is now virtually unusable following the increase in ping. The XBox is set up for port forwarding and in the DMZ and is connected to the hub through an official wireless adaptor.
Any assistance with this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

I see you are still online while you are waiting try the command prompt ping-The easiest way to check ping is to open the Command Prompt on the PC and type "ping (ip Address or Website)". Example:
    ping www.google.com

  • Problem: slow connection. I have an iMac (2007) running on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I just had my internet speed increased from 1 to 3 Mbps but my connection slowed down considerably. Do I have to change any setting?

Problem: slow connection. I have an iMac (2007) running on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I just had my internet speed increased from 1 to 3 Mbps but my connection slowed down considerably. Do I have to change any setting on the computer, and how?

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

  • Scroll speed increases in InDesign CS4

I just installed InDesign CS4 on my Toshiba NB505 netbook running Windows 7 Starter. The scroll is driving me nuts. When I use my touchpad scroll, the first few lines scroll smoothly, but then the speed increases to jump several lines with every touch. The document I'm looking at is only one page, but I can't get to even the halfway point before it starts jumping. This appears to be the only program this happens in. Acrobat scrolls fine; my system mouse settings are fine. I'm hoping there's an option in InDesign I'm just missing.
    Please help!

You'll do yourself a favor if you convert those TIFFs from 16-bit to 8-bit before opening them in InDesign. InDesign can only handle 8-bits of those file. I'm not sure how it handles 16-bit TIFFs but for 16-bit PSD files it reads the 8-bit composite saved with the file.
Your files will be considerably smaller, and will preview better.
The value of 16-bit is in making image adjustments BEFORE saving the file for other applications.

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • How much of a speed increase does a ssd give to a 2011 15 inch macbook pro

I am in the market for the new top end 15 inch macbook pro, I was wondering how much of a speed increase would I see overall. I would like to play world of warcraft, will I see a performance boost from a ssd? Thanks.

JoeyR is correct, the performance of a SSD drive is only on reads and writes
If you constantly exceed your RAM allocation, the pagination of excess memory needs to storage will be faster as well.
However a 7,200 RPM boot drive is pretty fast as well, at a lot lower $$ per GB than SSD and in a lot larger storage options.
7,200 RPM drives tend to use a bit more battery life than 5,400 RPM or SSD drives, if your on power most of the time then it's really not a issue.
Due to their limited writes, SSD drives are NOT being throughly erased using software designed for such purposes like on hard drives (Disk Utility), so any confidential information, sites visited, images and so forth can be recovered off of SSD drives.

  • Great speeds wired, poor wireless..

    Good morning.
I had BT infinity installed earlier this week, absolutely delighted thus far with download speeds nearing 80mb via ethernet connection. However whenever I try using the wifi connection I'm only managing speeds ranging from 4mbs-20mbs.
I have read numerous posts regarding the adaptor needs upgrading/updating. I honestly have no idea about this and need abit of help in what I need to buy/do in order to achieve greater speeds wireless.
I have read something about a "N" adaptor. Is this like a usb stick which plugs into the laptop or do you need to take the whole laptop apart and remove the original adaptor? Where can I pick up one of these adaptors and finally how do I find my current adaptor type?
Sorry for all the questions, i'm absolutely usless with computers.
     Thanks for your time
    James

Its not usually practical to change the internal wireless card in your laptop, as there can be incompatibility issues, as it depends on the laptops motherboard manufacturer. There is also a chance of damaging the laptop.
An external USB adapter simply plugs int a spare USB port on the laptop, and you then select that adapter instead of the laptops internal one.
Here is the TP-Link TL-WN722N as an example.
There is also a very tiny Edimax EW-7811Un one, which I use myself, and looks like this
When it is plugged into a USB port, you hardly notice it.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

  • Kernel patch for more CPU families offers measurable speed increases

I wanted to show folks a pretty nice patch that allows one more options when compiling a kernel for CPU families.  Complete list included at the bottom of this post.  I tested it using three different x86_64 machines running a generic x86-64 kernel and an otherwise identical kernel running with the optimized gcc options.
Conclusion: There are small but real speed increases using a make endpoint to building with this patch.
    Details:
    1) Three test machines: Intel Xeon X3360, Intel i7-2620M, Intel Core i7-3660K.
    2) All ran the make benchmark (linked below) 35 times while booted into a 'generic' kernel. Then all ran the same make benchmark 35 times after booting into an optimized kernel. Below are the optimizations chosen for each machine.
    2a) X3360 = core2
    2b) i7-2620M = corei7-avx
    2c) i7-3660K = core-avx-i
    3) Analyzed resulting distributions for statistical significance via ANOVA plots that clearly show statistically significant albeit small differences.
    Discussion
    1) All the assumptions for ANOVA are met:
*Data are normally distributed as show in the normal quantile plots.
*The population variances are fairly equal (Levene and Barlett tests).
    2) The ANOVA plots clearly show significance.
*Pair-wise analysis by Tukey-Kramer shows significance at the 0.05 level for all CPUs compared.
Below are the differences in median values:
    core2       +87.5 ms
    corei7-avx  +79.7 ms
    core-avx-i  +257.2 ms

I agree, your CPU, in practice, is really either idle or loaded.
In my case (AMD 965, 4 freq steps) the processor is at lowest freq for about 90 - 95% of a time, and at highest for 5 - 10%. The 2 intermediate are used for about 0.1% of a time.
My guess would be that intermediate ones are only used for smooth transition from lowest to highest. So they really are hardware dependent...

  • Will I get a speed increase with Infinity?

I currently have the standard broadband unlimited and get about 3-4MB download speed.
Is upgrading to infinity likely to give me any speed increases?
    Matt

    Hi canhefixit,
With ADSL (ADSLMax, ADSL2/2+) broadband the BB signals run from your local exchange to your property all the way via a copper phone line. This is why the further away you live from your local exchange the slower your broadband will be.
BT Infinity is BT Retail's brandname for fibre broadband.
Depending on what Openreach fibre infrastructure has been rolled out in your area will depend on what speeds you are likely to get.
The main fibre technology that is being rolled out around the UK is FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) fibre technology.
FTTC allows currently allows speed of upto 80mbps dependent on what Infinity package you are on and how far away you live from the FTTC Dslam cabinet.
FTTC works by installing a Dslam cabinet that is linked to your existing pcp. The new FTTC cabinet is connected to the local exchange via a fibre cable and then your property is connected to the cabinets via the existing copper phone line.
So for FTTC the external layout would be (simplified)
Local exchange >> Fibre Optic Cable >> FTTC Dslam Cabinet and existing PCP >> Existing Copper phone line >> Property
For FTTC the speed is dependent on how long your copper phone line is from your property to the cabinet. The further away you are from the cabinet the slower the FTTC broadband will be. Line quality also play a part.
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) fibre broadband technology has also been rolled out in certain areas in the UK. This allows speed of upto 330mbps and requires a Fibre Optic cable to run all the way from a FTTP enabled exchange to your property.
To find out what Fibre broadband speed you maybe able to get enter your BT landline number into http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl
In the grid there will be WBC FTTC ( if available to your property) and will be given an estimated speed.
It will also tell you what exchange you are connected to and what pcp (cabinet) you are on.
If you don't have a BT recognised phone line then you can try using your address by going to http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.AddressOutput It won't be as accurate as using the phone number but should be accurate enough.
Hope that helps and makes sense.
    Cheers

  • Extra $12 for Internet Speed Increase in July Bill

There was an extra $12 charges in my July Bill for speed increase.  Is there a way to avoid this charges?  Thank you customer service.

So after waiting for 3 days for a response from someone, looks like the problem is 2 things.  1 being somehow the 5 Ghz network was turned off by Comcast at some point and the modem itself is going bad.

  • Will I see speed increase with thunderbolt/Ether adapter?

I have a 2012 Mac Pro connected to my network with Ethernet cable: MP > router > cable modem. Cable and modem are 10/100/1000.
Apple makes a Thunderbolt / Gigabit Ethernet adapter (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD463ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-gigabit-ethernet-adap ter).
Anyone know if I might see any noticeable speed increase to the Internet switching from my Ethernet port out, to Thunderbolt port out using this adapter?
My broadband is 30 Mbps down, 5 Mbps Up, btw.
    Thx!

Most devices that are serving as the Ethernet Switches are only 100BaseT capable. That is why I said "choose" to go up to that speed. (Some folks, like me, have to go out and buy Gigabit-capable switches.) Apple Routers (they don't make Just a Switch, but you can configure a Base Station as a Switch) are Gigabit-capable.
My modem, router Ethernet ports are both Gigabit capable and I'm using the best wire I could get Cat 6.
The longest cable is 50 feet.
If all 8 conductors are crimped into the connectors with all 8 wires in use, you are all set. Cables that use only two pairs of wires instead of four pairs will not work.
Check by using Network Utility.app to see if you are already using Gigabit Ethernet speeds. If you ARE, then you should also configure Jumbo frames. If not, you can manually configure it to Gigabit speeds, Full duplex with flow Control, but if it cannot, for same reason, connect at that speed it will not fall back, it will fail to connect.

  • Exchange upgraded. Speed increase request.

Hi ive noticed that our exchange has been upgraded to 21cn and would like a speed increase please. i was told this would be done automatically but this isnt the case. Ive contacted the mods also.

by the exchange has changed do you mean you are on a different exchange or the exchange has been upgraded since february?
just need to wait on mods contacting you - you may need to agree a new 12 month contract if you get upgraded now instead of waiting for the rollout
