Safari 5.0.5 is clogging up.
Right after the update for Safari 5.0.5, everything is starting to slow down and clog up while browsing in Safari. I have reset and also cleared the profile under the Library folder. It does the same thing, HIGH CPU and Non-Responsive!
I'm sticking with Firefox, Sorry!
HI,
Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click *Get Info.* In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down.
Under General.
Deselect the box that says: Open using Rosetta.
And open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Open the Library folder then the Cookies folder. Move the Cookies.plist file to the Trash.
In that same Library folder, open the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari.

Replicating Safari, Mail records of iMac apps to Macbook apps using TM
My IMac HDD died which is no prob since I have 3yr extended warranty and while it is out of commission (and just for plain convenience anyways) I wish to replicate my entire email archives PLUS and more importantly my autofill, history, cookies et al from the Safari backups on my WD Tb to my MacBook.
I have long used the false security of Back to my Mac screen sharing which appears to have been only a rather lame and weak even if somewhat more secure substitute for full synchronization which does not seem to be possible.
I have this same beef with .mac(MobilMe) because due to the disparity between drive sizes on IMacs and MacBooks it is impractical to do complete synching between them due to the much larger installed software capability of the IMac (notably bloatware like AdobeCS, Iwork, ILife and WinXP on it's own VMware NTFS partition). Thus in spite of using password and username redundancy (for my own sanity) I've had to settle for synching keychains and preferences only even though not Tray and Widget items and trial or seldom used apps etc. for which there is simply not enough room on a 120Gb drive.
Thus I used both Backup.app for special cases backing up selected document backups(avoiding Downloads) to .mac and Time Machine avoiding all/most media, and applications folders (since those software updates plus Miro and EyeTV deletes (and reorganizing/re-filing editing my own pictures music & videos were eating up my Terabyte drive alarmingly with useless duplications of often quite disposable or redundantly relocated hugeitems in document workspaces)
So now my question is how do I replicate my master mail account, which used different (leave on server mail pickup preferences and never synched fully with the archive on my IMac, and my master Safari history (which I never erase since I'm more worried about me not bookmarking it than someone else checking it out) and Safari's autofill and cookie files or folders replaced on this MacBook, to get my life, which was backed up at 5:40AM moments before my HDD choked it's last moved over and replicated to my mundane basic MacBook apps?
My MacBook Safari has the preferences and OS-spam bloated plus my basic sparse general bookmarks synched only, not the important stuff like history, cookies and autofill in spite of my synching keychains which apparently doesn't work since I've read Safari has my autofills strewn around in Address Book or somesuch irrational craziness??
At least does anybody know how to do a simple Netscape type whole User file swap on Safari? What on earth is wrong with this OSX nightmare?
First of all my second MacBook computer (which is a bit newer) has information on it that was unfortunately never properly or completely synchronized despite my reasonable attempts to do so, (not including that complete "first edition" of incremental laptop apps and data lost when the HDD died the first month I attempted to set it up, 3 months after I bought it) due to the several email accounts POP server settings that had to be different in order to assure that I could use my many older pre-existing POP server accounts in READ ONLY MODE in MAIL on the rare occasions I needed a laptop.
Second of all I am "userme" (*example) and "userme's" folder is userme's initials "UM" and that remains the same as does "userme's password" regardless of what ever mac it is I shall ever use or own! It is irrational for me to have to have 2 or 3 or 5 different admin passwords, usernames, shortuser names and login passwords for as many Macs as I should want to own (and moreover, use screen sharing, Time Machine and .mac with! This is why UNIX invented machine names...
Third of all, I am paying for a .mac account which only one Mac which I own and run OSX on can use Time Machine on which unfortunately due to it's stingy disk space and woefully slothful speeds and bandwidth limitations is useless for Time Machine, and of course it appears that I need a separate Terabyte+ Time Machine backup external drive for each computer since Time Machine cannot differentiate (it's duplicatfile+ uselessbloatfile+ redundantly named) non-unique backups on a single sharable external drive let alone access a shared network one should I wish to use my Airport Extreme's slothful local network clogging USB port to do so.
Thus i have to have a Firewire Terabyte WD MyBook that is 60% consumed by/for IMac backups and a spare TrekStore 500Gb USB (that I have yet to setup) for Time Machine backups on for the MacBook. This is solely because the IMac and MacBook are incompatible in file system size, and cannot host anywhere near a similar compliment of apps or documents, because Apple refused to allow me to exchange and pay for the difference in price between the price of a system-compatible (then 250Gb) HDD I was insistent on for my MacBook HDD after the lame 120GB one suppled with it croaked on arrival! Now the the 250Gb one in the Imac is croaked too this may be a silver lining since i shall not accept it back as repaired unless I am allowed to have the defective device replaced with a 320Gb replacement regardless of warranty policy, charge nor price! (the IMac is so frighteningly and mysteriously constructed it is apparently in no way user replace or upgradable)
Thirdly for my old Windows PC "My Documents" archives (which I still have thankfully on my pile of old PC's) and the few newer software receipts and junk I did backup on .mac the Backup app that you have suppled appears to be likewise similarly totally dysfunctional as well as is the Migration Assistant app since the Migration Assistant app will ruin the Time Machine backups on my WD Terabyte drive and the Backup app WILL NOT RESTORE any files stored at .mac backed up from my IMac onto my MacBook because even though it appears to mount them after a prodigious unmonitored period of waiting selecting any (actually had to try 11 times till I discovered only the last one) of the dozen 'fullbackup' documents or the 20 random differently dated and all incomplete "incrementalbackup" documents and selecting all or any part within them whether choosing to "restore to a different location" (since the IMac locations don't exist on the MacBook) or not, the "Restore files" button remains grayed out!!!
Just what business is it of Time Machine or Backup what my username and user folder is called? -
Firefox draining energy fast and Safari is too slow
Hello, I bought my macbook pro in the end of 2011 and since mavericks it's has been nothing but disappointment, I am considering buying another computer to use Linux mainly because since I am a electronic engineering student, OS X doesn't satisfies my needs because most applications in my field are not available for it. But until then I will have to remain with it.
YOU MAY SKIP THE MESSAGE ABOVE AND JUMP RIGHT INTO THE ACTUAL ISSUE.
When I bought my macbook, I used to Chrome because it was faster. Then Mavericks came and it became a energy and memory hog. I started using Safari. But it's been more than a year since it's been a memory hog, it's slow that I spend most of my time finishing applications and I can barely get any work done because I need to research a lot and use lots of tabs, and if I do that, it simply will crash the computer and it will freeze for sometimes more than 5 minutes. Now I am working with Firefox and it's so fast. A part of me feels relieved for re-finding it. But it consumes a lot of my battery (current average energy impact is 18.34 and rising) . Can I do something to improve it?
What I have done in order to try and solve it:
EDIT: Cleared Sarafi's cache. Cleared Safari's History and just now Cache. I'll report back.
Reseted Firefox (created a new profile), disabled its hardware acceleration.
Reseted PRAM and SMC.
Deleted all my music and also videos that I would not immediately use.

Dec 27, 2014, 12:12:58 AM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/plugin-container_2014-12-27-00 1258_[redacted].crashI think your 4GB of RAM could have something to do with it. 4GB is a pretty small amount and the minimum. Your system is really like a clogged vacuum and is not running to it's full potential. I would upgrade the RAM. My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 2.2ghz i7 quad-core with 8GB RAM and fly's... After all, RAM is used to store files as you are using your system and when it uses up the 4GB writes those files to the HDD/SSD. The more RAM, the faster you'll be, because it will take a lot longer to fill up the RAM. I can put 16GB of RAM in my model, and plan on it. I also will be getting a SSD very soon and probably first.

IOS 8.2 on iPhone 4S - (major) Safari issue?
Hi everyone,
after getting pretty excited while watching the Keynote earlier today, I think I made a big mistake updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 8.2 immediately after release as I have a major issue with Safari now - I will try to explain:
It will take Safari several minutes to load even the most simple website (google) on the first try. If not interrupted during this time, the website will eventually load and after that Safari is as fast as it should be when opening other websites, tabs or using the address bar to search. After closing Safari - and re opening it will again, load any given site (tried NYTimes, WSJ, google, Highsnobiety, Selectism, gmail) painfully slow and after that, again work as fast as it should be.
If Safari is interrupted during this first opening of a site, it will freeze and finally shut down.
What it also kinda funny: If a site like nytimes.com has a re-deriction, to mobile.nytimes.com in this instance - Safari will notice that immediately/as fast as it should, but then takes minutes to load the site.
Internet connection via W-Lan or mobile works at the desired speed, as do apps like Mail, NYTimes, WSJ i.e.
What I tried so far:
Shut down phone and restarted - didn't help.
Reseted phone - didn't help.
What I could do:
Make a clean iOS 8.2 install ("new iPhone")
Recover from Backup.
Since it is Tuesday (10.03.2015) at 02:20 AM where I am located, I'm not really in the mood to completely restore my phone (that I need) anew right now. I will see if there will be a 8.2.1 to fix this rather soon and keep Safari opened in background, or if I will have to put up with configuring my iPhone anew in the coming week...
Greetings and thank you very much for any input you might have.
OliverThank you very much for bringing that up jakefsf!
Although I didn't mess with the DNS servers in my settings in first place, I figured it couldn't hurt to try to change it - and I was right, Safari works (for) now - as it should - every-time.
What I did: I changed the DNS Server's address from my original address to 8.8.8.8 (google's DNS server) - after that Safari worked like a charm. I changed back to the original address, Safari still works like a charm. So I guess something got clogged/*whatever* - and that "playing" with the addresses removed it.
(I forgot to mention in my original post, that I too tried to delete the cache and stuff - but that didn't do the trick.)
So I guess either the Update caused the "clogging" or my Router/ISP (Which I doubt, because everything was fine on my MacBook Air - using the same Router/W-Lan) - thankfully I'm fine now with a fully operational phone.
Thank you very much for bringing this very helpful solution jakefsf!!
@jimdouglas, It can't hurt if you try to do the same. Settings -> WiFi -> tap on the circled i behind the WiFi you're using, and change the DNS Server's address to 8.8.8.8 - see if Safari works. If it does, you can go back to the settings, remove 8.8.8.8 (leave it blank) it will automatically get the address back from your router - if it still works, it did the trick.
Greetings,
Oliver -
Safari Update 8.14.14 causing fan to run loud?
I just did the update for Safari 7.0.6 on 8.14.14 and now it appears that my computer fan is running a lot louder after I did this update. I know that it is not the fan not working correctly or the vent is clogged because I am using Chrome right now to type this message and the fan is running normally. I am wondering if others are having problems with this new update and/or how to solve the problem of the latest Safari update causing the fan to run louder.
Any advice would be appreciated.Extensions and plug-ins can increase fan speeds not just the browser itself.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
Check the fan noise. If it decreases, turn extensions back one at a time to test until you find the culprit.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here. -

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
How to move Safari's reload button
The latest update of Safari puts the reload button in the address area at the right. I
used to be able to put it where I wanted. How can I move it to the left of the address bar?Apple handed down the commandments on tablets of stone.
Thou shall have the reload button on the right of the address area, like it or not.
Thou shall not have a progress bar.
Thou shall have a lot of tiresome eye candy to clog up thy processor.
And you want to change it? Blasphemer!
if you really must endanger your soul there are a couple of suggestions in this thread:

How do I export bookmarks in Safari 1.3.2?
In the throws of retirement, I use a lot of online services. Since this is so, I have the pw's and login's edited onto the bookmark. My password and usernames remain relatively the same, with nuances of each. For those to come after me, who will need to get into the sites for account cancelation, how do I export the bookmarks into an editable word processor?
Also... I was thinking of upgrading the OS and Safari versions, but after seeing the slings and arrows of the upgrades... my 1.3.2 works just fine thank you!
eMac Mac OS X (10.3.9)I'm not sure what you were told about Keychain, I automatically store all my passwords and accounts there. It would seem the easiest solution for you, and if your User password (which is normally the same as the one used for Keychain) were written down somewhere accessible, opening keychain for "those who come after you" would be easy and they would be able to see all your accounts.
Upgrading your OS is a choice only you can make, but I am using the latest iteration with no problems, although I will say that Safari clogs up after a couple of days use and has to be closed and reopened to make it speedier.
Good luck,
Miriam -
Hey all,
Since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion my Safari (5.1) feels chunky after a while of use. Scrolling starts to stutter a bit, opening new tabs takes longer and so on.. So I descided to check the browser activity and I see Safari uses 405MB of memory but Safari-webmaterial (not sure if I translated it propperly) uses over 3GB of memory. I tried to restart Safari and restart my notebook (MacBook Pro 2009 8GB ram) but it keeps clogging up. When I restart my notebook the problem is solved for another hour or two hours.
Any more people with this problem?joeriksson wrote:
I first disabled the YouTube5 Safari extensions which seemed to make things a little better. At least for a while. Later I uninstalled Adobe Flash entirely and also disabled the ClickToFlash Safari Extension. So far it seems to have helped a bit. But I believe I need to run with it a couple of days to see if it really made a difference.
Chrome is still chunky for me though.
What I wrote there last time didn't work. Since then I realized after a restart it works good until the MacBook goes to sleep. When it wakes up again its chunky again.
Have also had problems with my audio that gets locked every now and then. Having to put in the headphone for a while seemed to have solved it for a while. Then it has happened again.
What I did yesterday was to uninstall Air Display (Avatron), which causes a reboot. After that my smooth scrolling has stayed, even through a sleep/wake of my MacBook. And so far I haven't had any problems with the audio either.
I realize that some have the problem even withouth having Air Display installed. So maybe Air Display isn't the cause (or at least only cause) to the problem. But it seems that the uninstallation of Air Display fixed something. -
SAFARI SLOWING INTERNET ACCESS
I have had appalling difficulty loading webpages via my useless ISP (UK supplier 'THREE' who do not have enough bandwidth to cope with their users. They have been claiming for three months that their really, really bad coverage has been due to a fault in my local mast which they never got around to repairing - until now. They finally claim they have repaired the fault and there should be an improvement in coverage.
BUT, I see no meaningful improvement in coverage and when I found I couldn't log into banking webpages etc owing to them taking too long to load or just being dropped, I telephoned the THREE ISP.
They then went through a rigmarole of clearing out cookies on my safari browser and asking me to remove all the contents of the autofill window and telling me to install file clearing out software from HIPPO website to keep Safari from being clogged out with unwanted files because they slow down sfari and slow down webpage loading.
I am irritated at losing all the autofill info so I have to enter passwords every time I load a regular webpage and it doesn't make any sense that using autofill makes your computer more and more useless at acessing the internet
Is this correct ? Do cookies and autofill items slow down webpage loading ?
Or is all this a load of rubbish for them to try and con me into accepting they have improved their coverage so they can start billing me again ?
Does Safari need clearing out because it gradually slows down internet access ?Just out of curiosity, does this problem only occur immediately following a re-boot?
The next time you encounter the problem, close Safari, launch IE, access a website, launch Safari and then see if you can access the net from Safari.
The problem you described has occured to me a couple of times on XP - only after a reboot. If I launch IE, then go back to Safari, it runs just fine. Still tinkering with it to try to track down more specifics. -
Safari Virus - December 07, 2006
I thought this day would never come but could it be that Safari now has a virus that is quickly affecting MAC users who attempt to access the internet. First it was Safari now my mail server is timing out or unable to connect to the network. Has an official update been posted anywhere from Apple ?????
Not every mac user. I'm not having this issue with Safari. Remember - only those with issues are writing in about them. If 10% of users are having a problem - they are all going to write in. The other 90% don't need to. Be pretty boring (not to mention irritating) if they did Hi, I'm not having a problem from a bunch of folks would only clog up the works. Good luck figuring out what is slowing you down - it could be one or a couple of a miriad of issues.

Memory Clogged...
i have a dual 2.7 ghz G5 with 4 gigs of memory and lately i've noticed that if i'm running multiple applications, especially some processor heavy ones, like toast or dvd2one, that any other application i try to use, even safari or iChat, takes a while to load. even trying to open up the machd can be a rigorous process.
after zapping the pram didn't work, i finally went into the activity monitor and saw that even tho i was only running toast and safari, i only had around 40 megs of free memory. a phone call to tech support taught me how to reset the nvram, and that seemed to clear up the used memory for a while, until it all got clogged up again and my system started heavily lagging. another call to apple and we emptied all the caches and once again it seemed to be fine.
so i needed to burn a dvd and decided to keep the activity monitor open. as i burned in toast, the further the burn process completed, the more memory it ate up, until i only had around 40 megs free again, but toast seemed to free up all that used memory when i quit. after that, i used dvdremaster to do a little compression, and it also ate up all my memory again, but this time, after i quit, it didn't release all that memory.
so what i'm wondering is why are these programs using up all my free memory and why is it not always being released when they're done with it? obviously having to constantly reboot to free up memory isn't convenient. the system is just really laggy at times. is there anything i can do...would totally reinstalling the OS fix anything?
Dual 2.7 G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5) 4GB DDR SDRAMMemory usage in Activity Monitor is explained here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
and should not be the problem with 4 gigs...
You could try checking how full the boot drive is; some guidance here
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
although some experts recommend keeping the boot drive not much above 50% to keep the system and applications in the faster, outer regions of the disc.
An erase and install may free up a bit of disc space; may speed things up; is touched on here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
General maintenance checks are here
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintainingmacosx.html
and performance tips here

Everything was working fine, I opened my Ipad try to load Safari. As quickly as a blank Safari browser opens, it closes. Please help, I hadnt changed any settings or recently downloaded anything.
Check your exhaust vents on the back of the Macbook, make sure it's not clogged up with dust.
Next I'd check in Activity Monitor to see what's causing your CPU to run so hot. (Applications -> Utilities)
Click on "%CPU" twice, and you'll see the processes that are using the most CPU power. It could just be a random hung application -
Safari doesn't open and comes up with this error report.
Please help.

Help my safari doesnt open and gives me a crash report
help my safari doesn't open and gives me a crash report ever since i downloaded a file from the internet. I have a macbook air (early 2014) with running os x yosemite version 10.10.1
There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked.
