Safari 5.0.6 plug-in html file corrupted (now Safari doesn't run)

Not sure how well I can explain this, as I'm definitely a novice!  Basically, Safari won't run or access certain websites b/c I'm guessing the html file for installed plug-ins is corrupt (Safari won't open the file file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Plug-ins.html. While trying to open this file, I continuously see the spinning "wheel").  Also, interestingly, I can't open the website listing Safari's extensions gallery for the security options.  Safari will, however, let me access other sites (e.g., Apple Support).
This all started to happen the DAY after the following:  In the interest of better securing my machine and/or having Safari run less slowly, I'd installed and enabled several RECOMMENDED Safari extensions (e.g., Web of Trust, Dr. WebLink Checker, and Ad Blocker).  I'd also enabled ClicktoFlash and changed several preferences (to accept cookies only from sites I visit; unclicking "Enable Java"). Everything was working BEAUTIFULLY (must faster and, when visiting a site containing videos or banners, I could click FLASH to run Flash for videos/banners requiring it).  Then, just this a.m., I first discovered I couldn't SEE ClicktoFlash and then discovered I couldn't open the plug-ins html file. I couldn't get into Canvas (a learning delivery system) that I desperately need.  I've tried uninstalling the new Safari security extensions mentioned above, clearing Safari's cache and its history, restarting my machine, restarting Safari, and even resetting Safari.  I've also repaired my disc permissions and restarted the machine, restarting Safari, etc. Nothing works to restore the plug-ins html file.
My husband -- who is very proficient with MACs --  can't figure this out.  He did just install HIS version of Safari (same one for same OS) on my machine and disabled MY version of Safari.  Still having the exact same problem re the plug-ins html file.
HUGE SIGH and thanks tremendously for recommending a fix!! I'd really rather use Safari than other browsers.

Andy:  BTW, do you have any ideas about WHY the plug-in html file will no longer load in Safari?  As noted in my original query, this is what I'd done about one day before the plug-in file wouldn't load:  " I'd installed and enabled several RECOMMENDED Safari extensions (e.g., Web of Trust, Dr. WebLink Checker, and Ad Blocker).  I'd also enabled ClicktoFlash and changed several preferences (to accept cookies only from sites I visit; unclicking "Enable Java")."  Thanks for any hints you can share! • I moved a html file and now the page doesn't have a background

I was trying to remove the .html tags from my web pages and followed the advice on this past post. I created a new folder in Dreamweaver's File tab, then moved the .html file over and renamed it to index.html. Unfortunatley the swf and background images are broken and can't reference them. I'm wondering what step I missed, or how can I relink them?

You have bad paths to all your external CSS and Scripts. Typically when you move a file into a folder in the Files Panel, DW will ask you if you want to update links.  You should have hit YES.
To fix the problem, change all of this in your code:
    <link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <link href="layout.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <script src="js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

  • Safari update to 5.1.5, on snow leopard, now safari won't open any web page.

Just installed Safari update to 5.1.5 and now Safari won't load any web page. Running snow leopard on an iMac.  How do I fix, or revert to previous version of Safari that did work, keeping in mind, can't access internet on that computer since Safari won't load a web page (Firefox, Chrome, Opera have never worked on that computer, although Firefox worked fine until I upgraded OS to snow leopard).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HTML files viewed in Safari

I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it in the search area. But I am in a web design class, and just started taking my Macbook to school. And when I create an HTML document in a text editor and open it in safari, it shows the source code, not the web page. Also, if I create an HTML document on my PC and try to view it in the text editor, it shows up as a web page, with the tables in place, not with the source code of the tables. Is there a way to change it's properties so it will open differently in each application? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it correct that you are talking about TextEdit as your "text editor." If so, then to view the source code of html pages, you need to make sure you check the box in the preferences that says "ignore rich text commands in html." If you don't do that, TextEdit works like a browser.
Also to compose html code, you need to make sure TextEdit is set to Plain Text in the preferences and not Rich Text, and never use the Save As HTML option, which adds an extra layer of html to your code, so that it will not display correctly in a browser.
Another free text editor you can download which many people like is TextWrangler.

  • I removed my /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/.VideoCaptureFactory.* files and now Safari will not open. How do I fix this?

    Hi,
In a stupid attempt to "fix" my computer, I removed my /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/.VideoCaptureFactory.* files (one was a .png and the other was a .xls).
    I followed these steps:
    Manual Removal Instructions
    1. Run the following command in Terminal:
    defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
    2. Take note of the value, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
    3. Proceed to step 8 if you got the following error message:
"The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist"
    4. Otherwise, run the following command in Terminal:
    grep -a -o '__ldpath__[ -~]*' %path_obtained_in_step2%
    5. Take note of the value after "__ldpath__"
    6. Run the following commands in Terminal (first make sure there is only one entry, from step 2):
    sudo defaults delete /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
    sudo chmod 644 /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info.plist
    7. Delete the files obtained in steps 2 and 5
    8. Run the following command in Terminal:
    defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
    9. Take note of the result. Your system is already clean of this variant if you got an error message similar to the following:
"The domain/default pair of (/Users/joe/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist"
Is there a way to update my db to not look for this or did I remove something crucial to the functioning of Safari? I feel like an idiot.
    Thanks for any help.
    Sincerely,
    Sterling MacNay

You installed a variant of what’s commonly called the “Flashback” or “Fakeflash” trojan, although the names are obsolete.
If you’re certain you know when that happened, and you back up with Time Machine or something similar, you can save yourself a lot of time by restoring your whole system from the most recent snapshot taken before it was infected. Then take Steps 7, 8, and 10 below.
How can you tell when the infection took place? All you can be sure of is that you were infected some time before the problems started. You may have visited a blog that prompted you to install some kind of software, or a “certificate.” You entered your administrator password when prompted. If you remember doing that recently, mention it in a reply, but don’t post a link.
If you don’t know when you were infected, there's no easy, reliable way to remove the malware, because it's constantly changing. There are differences of opinion on this site as to the best of course of action, so you should do your own research before deciding how to proceed.
I suggest you take the following steps:
    1. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
    2. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This action will destroy all data on the volume, so you must be sure of your backups.
    3. Install the Mac OS.
    4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account with the same name as your old one. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
    5. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update. You may have to run it more than once to fully update your system.
    6. Restore the contents of the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. The Library folder may contain components of the malware. It’s best not to restore anything from there. If you must do so, restore only files, not whole folders with all their contents, and only if (a) they’re visible in the Finder, and (b) you know what they are, and (c) they haven’t been altered. Don’t restore anything in the home subfolder Library/LaunchAgents, if it exists, or any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are.
    7. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, launch Safari and select Safari ▹ Preferences… ▹ Security from the menu bar. Uncheck the box labeled Enable Java. Because of known bugs, Java in those OS versions is unsafe to use on the Internet. (Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similar names.) If you’re running Mac OS 10.6.8 or later, you should still disable the Java web plugin unless you really need it. Few websites have legitimate Java content nowadays. If you encounter one that does, enable Java temporarily.
    8. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
    9. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated.
    10. If you use any third-party web browsers, disable Java in their preferences. As with step 7, this step is mandatory if you’re running any version of Mac OS X older than 10.6. Otherwise it’s optional, but recommended.

  • CS2 USED to open my raw files, and now it doesn't. HELP!

This is probably addressed somewhere but Ive looked and have been unable to find an answer to my specific problem.
I previously had an imac G5 with CS2. I purchased a new camera (Canon 5D) and the computer had no trouble opening and editing raw files. WEll...computer crashed, I bought a new computer, installed CS2 and low and behold, I no longer seem to have Camera Raw. Where did it go? No amount of downloading plugins will help, since I don't have it in the first place. I get an error message "Photoshop does not recognize this type of file" both when I try to open a RAW file AND when I try to install a camera raw plugin.
I am so frustrated. I have piles of shoots to edit and I'm falling behind. PLEASE HELP.

The Canon 5D needs ACR 3.3. A fresh installation of PS will have a lower version. You can confirm this by looking in PS Help > About Plug-in...
You must download the latest 3.x version and install it exactly following the instructions.
    Get it here:http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3581

  • I accidentally set my Downloads to automatically open the files, and now it doesn't save them at all, except in my temporary files. How do I reset the Automatic Download setting?

I remember back in Firefox 3.6 you could go into about:config and reset the automatic setting for downloads, but that particular option has either been renamed or isn't there anymore.

Go to the Firefox/'''Tools''' menu, click on '''Options''' and go to the''' Applications''' panel where you can change the action for different content types, to "Save File" or "Always ask" instead of opening the file in a particular application or plugin. See [[Managing file types]].

  • Moved files, synced, now Flash doesn't work

I just started on a new site. There's only one page, some images and a flash.
I thought I'd give Dreamweaver a shot at fixing links while I reorganize files, so I made a new "_flash" folder and moved all flash files (swf, flv) and let DW update the links. I saved everything, synced and now the flash won't show up on the page. I checked the code and saw that the new path was indeed added to the Flash code, so I'm stumped. I've since put it back to the way it was and abandoned the whole idea. But I would really like to know why it happened. I'd like to take advantage of this feature in the future. Any ideas?

    Hi
Without a link this is only a list of possible causes -
Check that the links to any script files in the head content are correct.
If the swf is a slideshow, (or similar) the links inside the swf must also be updated.
Check all files are uploaded to there correct, (new) positions in the file structure.
If it is an flv file the link to the video may require updating to reflect the new position.

  • Safari 8 downloads a blank.html file issue

    Hi all...
I am new to web developing in jsp. I am facing a issue that safari 8 downloads automatically a blank.html file. while safari 7 does not has this isssue.
what may be the reason for this ?
should i configure safari settings or coding problem ?
What to do to fix this issue..
    thanx in advance

While you can try switching Off  Safari - Preferences - Extensions; and clearing data for that sitein Safari - Preferences - Privacy... it's often a problem with the site coding or server, and can't be fixed at your end.
Of course, if this happens everywhere - still try without extensions, and also test in a new or Guest user account.

  • Safari is sandboxed to not reveal filepath from html file select to Javascript ?

I know safari is sandboxed not to reveal filepath from html file select control to Javascript via the Value attribute , but i am unable to find any documentation regarding how this is done and since when this is present .. Can somebody please guide me with this ..?

Since Safari is able to save as HTML file a page if it is opened online (from web), making "Save as...", and it is unable to make so if the webarchive file is on the hard disk...I tried to upload on a web server some .webarchive files.
Then I went online in the web page with the list of all the uploaded .webarchive files... (ex.: http://....filename1.webarchive, etc...)...
My goal was to open ONLINE (not on hard disk) the files and then make "save as...",... but... SURPRISE!!! Safari is UNABLE to open a webarchive file from the web, it asks me where to save the file... it can only save it, it writes that it is an "application"...
I think this happens because .webarchive is not a real web page but a "package"... but my displeasure is this:
Once opened an hard disk's webarchive file, its content is loaded in ram and it appears like a normal web page (html + images + etc...)... so, in this moment, Safari should be able to save it "as...." HTML file too.... discarding images and other objects....
    Any advice?

  • Safari is unable to save in HTML (source page option) offline webarchives

    Hello!
Some years ago I made a very difficult and prolonged research: I found over 1500 web pages of medical researches and I stored it on the hard disk, using safari.
I didn't know that its default format file is .webarchive.
Now I have these 1500 .webarchive files and I need to use it on other PCs (also Windows and Linux systems), and they take 800 MB on my pendrive! (webarchive are bigger than imageless html files).
I need to convert them in HTML format.
Only 3 methods exist in the world:
    1) from terminal: textutil -convert html FILENAME.webarchive. I drag and drop 10 files a time in the webarchive window after the command string, but it converts about 5-6 files on 10: for the other it gives an error. Some files are impossible to convert using this method.
    2) WebArchive folderizer: I could drag and drop all the webarchive files on its small window: it will convert each webarchive file in a folder with the same name of the file. Then I could select all the folders, use FINDER's search function letting it find just HTML files and then move them in a folder and delete all the subfolders.
But the HTML files extracted do not keep the original filename! This is important for me, because I need that each file must have the name of the medical research. I'll have to find (reading a list made in neooffice) the files and read them: over 1500 files, and it will need lots of time make an internal file text search method each time!
    3) Webarcher: it converts the files in .war format, not html. It is compatible with Windows, but it keeps the images, like a webarchive, and the space requied is high too.
The method that I could use is this:
Open the file with Safari in OSX, and re-save it in the "source page" (HTML) format... but.... SURPRISE!!!
If I open a web-page with Safari, and I choose "save as...", it let me choose the format (html or webarchive).
If I open a hard disk stored page with Safari, and I choose "save as...", the small menu in which I should choice the format... disappears!!!
This happened years ago... now the OS X is newer... the Safari is newer... but the problem is the same!
    How could I solve it?
    Is this a bug?
    Thank you!

  • Opening local .html files on iPad

I have created a personal homepage that I have loaded on my Macs at home. Any way I can use this file on my iPad 3?

It is possible to open local HTML files in Safari on iPad2. Easy!
    Open your Safari.
Touch Bookmark icon for a little while.
A dialogue box appears with "/var/Mobile" title.
Go to "Applications" > your app (iFile, GoodReade or whatever yours) > Documents.
And you are there. Open your HTML files.
Now you can go anywhere to and fro without problem.
    It is FTP:///.
    If need later, Bookmark that.

  • AppleScript: Add a HTML file in the body of Email by the clipboard

I would like to insert a HTML file into the body of Email by the clipboard action.
    This is my cord below:
set the clipboard to (read (choose file) as «class RTF »)
    set theBody to "Hello"
    tell application "Mail"
    activate
      set theMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {content:theBody, visible:true, subject:"mysubject"}
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      tell process "Mail"
set focused of UI element 1 of scroll area 1 of window 1 to true
      keystroke "v" using command down
      end tell
    end tell
This code enables only rtf file rather than HTML.
Also I don't want to use the html content by the function of Mail.
Because if using it, you won't insert both  a html file and body at the same time.
So what I would like to is to insert a HTML file by the clipboard action into a body.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
One solution is to use Safari to copy the document:
set x to choose file -- a HTML file
    tell application "Safari"
        open x
        delay 2
repeat while source of document 1 does not contain "</html>"
            delay 1.5
        end repeat
        activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
        tell process "Safari"
            set frontmost to true
keystroke "a" using command down -- select all
            delay 0.3
keystroke "c" using command down -- copy to clipboard
        end tell
    end tell
    set theBody to "Hello"
    tell application "Mail"
        activate
        set theMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {content:theBody, visible:true, subject:"mysubject"}
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
        tell process "Mail"
set focused of UI element 1 of scroll area 1 of window 1 to true
            keystroke "v" using command down
        end tell
    end tell
    Also try this:
set the clipboard to (read (choose file) as «class HTML») -- a HTML file
