Safari 5.0.6 still hangs half-way, often

My OSX 10.5.8 dual G5 with Safari 5.0.6 still hangs half-way, often, when I click on URLs or bookmarks.
Strangely, when it does so, it seems to always hang with the blue progress bar in the same spot, almost exactly half-way up the URL address field.
If I stop the load and Reload Page, it always immediately gets the whole page loaded and shown.
Any ideas?
thanks

Thanks very much, Klaus1.
0. All of this hanging started suddenly after the last Apple System Security Update of a month or so ago. Perhaps 1/3 my *newly requested* pages hang during loading now, half-way through always, and going to a new tab and loading a different site will only hang 1/3 of the time, i.e. mostly opening a new tab and site is fine. Re-loading any page is always fine.
Your suggestions:
1. I clear cache and history, regularly, several times a day.
2. Using 8.8.4.4, 8.8.8.8 - Google Public DNS. I used to use OpenDNS but had trouble with it a few months back.
3. Not part of a network
4. It is only a year old, from Sky Broadband, and has served me very well until issue 0. above
5. Interesting... DNS pre-fetching: What is this and is it likely to cause pages to begin loading (AFTER DNS time) and then hang half-way through? I would think this problem is NOT my DNS settings, since the normal (short) DNS delay still occurs and the progress bar moves normally to half-way then hangs.
6. Flash: Yes, it's a total mess these days, bloated and very buggy. This sometimes causes an overall slow down, but not hanging for me.
7. I will try the "killall" next time a page hangs; will this fix that current hang, or do I need to reload. REMEMBER: reloading *always* unhangs the page load.
Thanks, but unless I missed something, non-obvious, none of these help.

If Safari is getting very slow:
1. (Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
2. If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
3. If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
4. If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
5. One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
6. If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

The restore process is just spinning it's wheels and the log says "erasing" drive name.
Is the drive name your internal?
UPDATE: When I stopped the restore function I checked the error log again and it said "could not un-mount disk for erasure" Not sure what that means. Anyone know how to fix that?
I'm pretty sure something is wrong with the hard drive installed on the iMac at this point. I tried to do a clean install of 10.5.0 from the Leopard retail DVD and that stalled early in the process as well.
Yes, it sure sounds like it. It now sounds like both the TM restore and Erase and Install are unable to erase your internal HD. It's not even getting to your TM backups, or installing OSX.
Let's double-check and try again. Boot from the Install disc again, and completely reformat the internal HD. Be sure to use the GUID Partition Map scheme if it's an Intel Mac, or the +Apple Partition Map+ scheme if it's a PPC. And use the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ format.
It might be worth taking the time to then do a +Zero Out.+ Select Erase, then +Security Options,+ then +Zero Out Disk+ (the one-pass option is sufficient). That will, obviously, write zeros to the entire disk. If this fails, the disk is dying and likely the cause of the whole mess. If it passes, it isn't necessarily ok, but it's a pretty good sign, and you may be able to proceed with the restore.

  • Logout/shutdown hangs half way through repeatedly

When I attempt to logout/restart on my iMac, most of the time all the visible apps close but then the desktop picture doesn't go away and the computer never completes the logout/restart process.
I am assuming (perhaps wrongly, since I don't know much) that there is a "hidden" app in the background that is still running and nixing logout. However, no error window or indicator appears. Is there a way to figure what is stopping this logout/restart process?
The issue is intermittent, making it tough to trouble shoot. However, it happens on both of our home iMacs, as well as 80% of the time on my work iMac. It never happened on any machine before the upgrade to Yosemite, so I am guessing it has something to do with Yosemite. But, to make it more confusing, it never occurs on my MPP that also runs Yosemite.
I've trashed the com.apple.finder.plist file, repaired permissions & restarted the computer multiple times but the issue persists.
More specifically, when logging out or attempting to shut down, all the visible apps close and my desktop goes blank (i.e., the hard drives and desktop icons all go away, except for the Dock, but the Desktop background picture itself remains unchanged), but the computer never finishes shutting down. Relaunching Finder does nothing, i.e. nothing happens after I give the command to relaunch. I can still open applications (except for Finder) via the Dock and they behave normally, with menu bars appearing at the top of the screen, but Finder never starts working and the hard drive icons never show up again on the desktop.
On one machine where we run multiple users (for the kids), sometimes it will happen for one of the users but not others. On the other machines where it repeatedly happens, there is only a single user.
It's not the end of the world to force a reboot with the hard power key most of the time, but it would be really nice to figure out why this is happening and fix it.

    Here are some logs.
Another potential clue: we have 6 user accounts on our home iMac. Repeatedly, with the forced reboots necessitated by this bug, two of the accounts are greyed out on the main login screen following a reboot. The names are there under the icons, but the icons no longer have the colored pictures that should be associated with them. In the past several months, intermittently these icons will be fixed and log in works fine (I have no idea why they get fixed occasionally and then rebreak with the forced reboots), but yesterdy my wife tried to login to her greyed out icon and it wouldn't accept her password and then went to a whole different error screen asking her to change her password, does the keyboard not work, etc. Does this help with the troubleshooting process?
Also, the issue occurs on my home and work iMacs running Yosemite. The work iMac only has one account so don't think the multiple accounts has anything to do with the problem per se.
And the issue does not occur on my old MPP 17" running a similar version of Yosemite, and it has 3 accounts.
This issue is starting to impair productivity both at home and work so would appreciate any advice anyone has. And our University "hates" Macs, so I don't want to give them any excuse to force us all to go to the PC World
    Much appreciated.

So I have downloaded several songs (they have downloaded completely) and noticed while playing the songs they just stop mid song or with 10 seconds left they abruptly cut off. This is not how the song was recorded. I like the songs and want them but would like the entire songs.

Try deleting the problematic tune (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iTunes store.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

  • Update screen stuck at half way

so i went to sleep listening to music off of itunes and i woke up half way through the night, looked at my computer and it was updating something and the update bar was at half way (it was the update screen where the screen is black and there is a white apple in the middle with a white and grey loading bar under it). so i went back to sleep and in the morning the bar was at the same place of about 50%, now it is 9 at night and it is still at half way.
    i am running yosemite 10.10.2 (i think) on a 13 inch 2014 macbook air
i have tried rebooting numerous times but when i turn the computer back on it resumes the update
please help i need this fixed asap since i use this computer for work, is their any way that i could boot strait into the desktop to bypass the update or something?
btw i just found the image on google images mine is obviously at about 50%
    thanks in advance

You did shutdown by holding the power button until the mac shutoff I assume.
If this happens when starting up it looks as if a system update download was made (and these are installed while restarting); so this means the startup procedure was stopped for some reason.
Try following: shutdown again, the startup while holding CMD+R: it starts (slow) in the Recovery partition: choose "Install OSX", this will take some time, depending on the internet speed. This will leave non-system elements unchanged.

I am currently restoring my ipod 5 however half way through re-covering my ipod 5 Itunes says "locked with a password unlock ipod etc..." and turns on the ipod and my ipod is still disabled...
    what do i do??

Try and force it into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

Anyone have any ideas what I should do to correct the problem?

    HI James,
Have no idea the connection between Safari and your power strip.
But... try resetting Safari. With Safari open, from the Menu Bar, select Safari/Reset Safari and select the following:
    Clear History
    Empty the Cache
    Remove all cookies
    Remove all website icons
Also, delete the Safari preference file: com.apple.safari.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.

Could be a defective SIM.  Try a new one from your carrier.

  • I rented a movie via Itunes on  my PC but half-way through the download recieved a "An unknown error has occured (-50)" notification. This is not my first rental, and I have verified my network and all connections to be good. Will I still be charged?

I rented a movie via Itunes on  my PC but half-way through the download recieved a "An unknown error has occured (-50)" notification. This is not my first rental, and I have verified my network and all connections to be good. I have rebooted Itunes and resumed the download of the movie only to receive the same error code. Has the movie file been corrupted? Can I recover the rental even though the time has elapsed? Will I be charged?

Did you figure this out?  I haven't rented a movie in this new iTunes yet and saw one tonight I wanted to rent.  Same fricken thing is happening to me.  I hate this new iTunes, and I really hate that there are problems like this....why the heck do they have to fix something that isn't broken and break it?  This just really stinks.

  • Safari slow slow slow and hangs after update?

After the recent update Safari loads slowly or not at all. It hangs mid-laod most of the time. My Macbook Pro is late 2008, osx lion

I am also having the same issue.  Prior to updating the other night, my safari loading extremely fast.  Now, pages take forever to load, some freeze and won't load at all, and yet others will load half way and then stop as though its done.
    Anyone have suggestions?
