Safari 5.1.10 Has Stopped Working

So I'm obviously way behind on Mac Hardware & OS. I'll buy another Mac eventually, but I'm making do with what I have for now, and this means I can't upgrade beyond 10.6. Which means I run Safari 5.1.10. I have Chrome installed, and I use it when I have to, but I'd like to understand why Safari has basically stopped working.
Basically, the problem is that periodically, Safari slows down to a crawl, or seems to "get stuck." The app does not crash or freeze, it just can't seem to load anything. Pages I access frequently like Gmail seem to load fine for a while. I navigate through these sites from page to page, then suddenly Safari hits a wall and it may take several minutes for it to recover. To take the Gmail example, I may send an e-mail, then choose a label or go back to the Inbox, and it's like time just stops. I get progress indicators both from Safari (the blue progress bar built into the address bar) and Gmail (messages Google builds in to let the user know the page is loading slowly), but nothing happens. In some cases, it lasts several minutes, and then suddenly it starts working again.
Imagine a page beginning to load, then the progress indicator gets stuck somewhere around 50% or something, and nothing changes for several minutes until, all of a sudden, the progress indicator shoots up to 100%. That's what it does.
For a long time I blamed this problem on the sites that seemed to have this problem most, but eventually it seemed pretty clear it was Safari. I've lived with it for a long time because it was intermittent, and because I know I'm way behind. But lately it's gotten much worse, and today, it just stopped working altogether for several sites.
Just to get the obvious out of the way:
No, I can't upgrade to a newer OS which would allow me to download a newer version of Safari.
Yes, I have Reset Safari, cleaning out the cache, history, etc. The only thing I don't clean out are my passwords.
No, it isn't all pages that cannot load. Believe it or not, some pages still work just fine. Others that used to have problems, no longer work at all now. This just happened today. In the past, I've always been able to Reset Safari or just give it time, and Safari would eventually work for these sites again. It has never happened that Safari simply would not recover.
Yes, I have run a virus scan.
I have a 1 TB Hard Drive with almost 600 GB available, and 4 GB of RAM (of which, my iMac can only utilize 3 GB).
I always download updates from Apple, and there are none currently waiting to be downloaded.
I have often performed Speedtests when this issue occurs, and my download speed is never less than 30 Mbps, my upload speed never less than 5 Mbps.
Pages that don't load no matter how long I wait include Gmail (and any other Google page) and Apple.com.
Pages that load immediately, with no hesitation, include CNN and Twitter.
If anyone has any ideas on what may be happening - and in particular why it went from being a periodic nuissance to an insurmountable obstacle just today - please let me know.

    Hello everyone,
I am having a terrible time getting Safari to play nice with Windows here. I am getting an error that I have found no other information about when Safari crashes. The error is listed below:

I have tried b-noir's troubleshooting steps of clearing the preferences and it worked for about two minutes and crashed again when I clicked on the search bar. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I have tried installing outside of the program(x86) folder. I have tried it on another user account in which it works fine with no crashing. I have also tried repairing Apple Application Support and sfc /scannow comes back with no errors which is no surprise because its a brand new hard drive.
I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, this morning I took a stab at opening Safari. It said "Windows is configuring Safari" upon opening, as if it was being used for the first time. After it opened, I immediately reset Safari and disabled plugins. It appears to be running stable now for some reason.

First, open your Action Center and expand "Maintenance". Click "View reliability history":
Once the reliability report has been generated, look for Critical events for Safari generated at the time of the "Safari has stopped working" messages. Doubleclick the name Safari in the critical events. (Don't click View solution.) Here's a screenshot showing what to doubleclick:

I generated the problem report similar to the above screen shot " by way of IE 9 "  but will not let me copy and paste the contents as a screen shot in reply to your post here . Copy to clipboard did not work either. I might be doing something wrong. Oh well.
By the way , the only difference is- The Problem Event Name of mine is not BEX. but rather : APPCRASH. Fault Module Name : JavaScriptCore.dll.  Fault Module Version: 7534.55.2.1. The rest are very similar to the above screenshot. If you need more information then I guess I have to do it  all manually. Please let me know. Thanks again.

    Hi..
    Go to   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the AdobePDF browser plugin to the Trash.
    Try Safari.
If you have problems locating the plugin...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go

  • Windows 7 64-bit: Safari has stopped working

Help needed! I am one of those guys that has to use a Windows machine at Work. So I have a Windows 7 64-bit OS on my work laptop. I use Safari at home on my Macs. Since I have a browser choice, I surely want to use Safari 5 on my Windows 7 machine but so far I am having no luck. Safari runs for X minute (time varies) and then all of sudden crashes with a message "Safari has stopped working." I have uninstalled Safari, manually cleaned up all the Safari folders that go into user account preferences, ran a registry cleaner via WinUtilities so that all traces of Safari are gone. Then did a fresh install with Administrator privileges (I even tried the install with my own login ID) but either way the result is the same -- Safari 5 crashes at random. What can I do to make Safari 5 on Windows 7 stable? Please advice.
    Thank you!

Fingers crossed, the problem reports for those errors might cast some fresh light on the source of the problem.
Head into your Problem Reports and Solutions control panel (or the Windows 7 equivalent ... the Action Center?) and look for recent Safari problem reports. Open them up and look through. Do they all seem to be saying the same thing? If so, paste the contents of a typical problem report into a reply here so we can have a look.

Go into your Action Center, find your Problem history and look for Safari problem reports that occur at the same time as those error messages. Open the Safari problem reports and have a look through them. Do they all say pretty much the same thing? • "safari web browser has stopped working" ... help?

So a number of months ago (5, I believe) Safari Web Browser crashed and I tried opening it and a message popped up that said:
    +Microsoft Windows:+
+Safari Web Browser has stopped working+
+A problem caused the problem to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.+
Now up until the crash, I was extremely satisfied with Safari and it was my default internet browser. After I kept seeing this message when trying to start Safari, I decided to uninstall it and reinstall it, then tried repairing it several times. It kept showing the same message for a while so I decided to give up for a few months, so I tried again and the same thing happened. Once again I gave up and today I tried again when I updated my iTunes and that same message popped up and Safari didn't work.
So I decided to post here to see if someone can help me figure out and fix the problem since I prefer that browser to most and never had any problems with it until I froze it and it crashed that number of months ago.
Thanks and your help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Vista, but in XP the Safari preferences etc. are stored in this location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\
If you know where the equivalent Vista location is, rename the Safari directory to be Safari_backup and then retry launching the application to see if one of the files in there is corrupt and causing Safari to crash.
If it does work after doing that, try moving the files one by one back from the Safari_backup directory to the newly created Safari directory, restarting Safari each time, until you find the problematic one.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data (Clear Cache on iOS 4) and also Clear History
If you stillc an't access Facebook via Safari then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
There are a number of Facebook apps (including an 'official' one), which might be better than accessing it via Safari

  • Safari in Lion has stopped working.

Safari in Lion has stopped working.  All my peers that have lion have been having this problem, and those that still have Snow Leopard have no issues with their Safari. The loading animation only gets to about as far as "http://" and just hangs there. It says it's connected to the internet (i've tried with both wi-fi and ethernet). I have no idea what happened, as it had been working for a solid month before this.
I'm sadly writing this message from the firefox browser .
In the past to get it to start working again (for a short period of time), i would:
    Emtpy Cache in Safari
    Reset Safari
    Remove my Wi-Fi remembered internets
    Delete Wi-fi
    Reboot the computer
    Re-add Wifi
    Reconnect to the internet
it would still hang for a bit, but eventually it would load a page.
If anyone has any advise, it's much appreciated.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work. Some of the lines will probably wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Safari has stopped working (MSVCR80.dll)

I get a Windows 7 error "Safari has stopped working". I've tried a number of things (e.g., uninstalling and installing Safari, re-installing Windows 7, disabling plug-ins, disabling Java, disabling Javascript, uninstalling itunes, ran CCleaner, Malabytes, etc.). I'm practically running barebones in terms of running apps. But, nothing seems to get rid of this error. I would try Restore before I saw the error, but the earlier dates for restoring are missing, so I cannot restore the computer to an earlier date before I noticed the problem.
The browser works fine for about 5 minutes, and then gives the error. What can I do to get rid of this pesky problem? I like Safari and want to continue using it, but I am at wits end...

Any thing else to try before giving up on using this browser??

Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data.
Then close Safari. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Now reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

I recently installed Safari 3.0 (from FileHippo.com), it will bring Safari up and will show the "top part" (the gray part) but the page will be blank and in the task bar at the bottom of Vista it says: "Failed to open page". So I'm not sure where to go from here.
I would love to hear a response! thanks!

Well, if your ever used new versons of Safari on Windows, the font is ridiculously wide.
Not so's I've noticed, with Safari 4.0.4 through 5.0.2 by comparison with other web browsers (IE 8, Firefox, Chrome also currently running on this PC).
Could you uninstall the 3.0, reinstall a 5.0.2, take a screenshot of the text effect, put the screenshot up on an image hosting site and post a link to the screenshot, please?

  • HT201541 My website has stopped working in Safari Version 5.1.10?

My website (www.dollshousefireplace.co.uk) has stopped working in Safari Version 5.1.10 (old Mac pro) and on one of my other machines (old imac) running Version 5.0.6? but it works fine on other devices (ipad, iphone, (new) Mac pro and PC) using (probably) different versions of Safari. Is there anything I can do to change this!

Thank you KiltedTiim and Eric Root,
The thing is, although upgrading the OS might work, I am more concerned with that the another one of my websites I've made (only a few days latter, www.marblemason.co.uk) does work in Safari 5.1.10.
In both cases they where made using Adobe Muse!
I know that most of my customers and potential customers are normally in there 50s +, and will not be interested in contantley upgrading there OS.

  • Google maps has stopped working in Safari

Within the last week, Google Maps has stopped working in Safari 6.1.1. It previously worked fine. The page starts to load, and then hangs. It displays the small rectangle that says "loading...". I have tried deleting Safari preferences. This had no effect. Any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
