Safari 5.1.2 Freeze download button

Hi
I've recently re-installed OS X Lion on my new 13" MacBook Pro (late 2011), and in the beginning everything worked fine.
Within the last couple of weeks I've been bothered by a problem with safari Version 5.1.2 (7534.52.7).
When I've downloaded a file, and I click on the "download arrow down"-button in the upper right corner, it freezes for 10-30 seconds sometimes.
I haven't installed any third part plug-ins, and I only got 2-5 tabs opened at the same time.
The rest of the system responds when this happens, so it's only safari.
Have anyone else experienced this problem? Anyone with a solution?
Thank you.
/Kenneth

Found a solution.
Did a permission repair with the Disk utility, reset Safari and then it seemed to work smooth again.
Pretty weird.

  • Safari 8.0.3 missing download button

I opened my Safari  (version 8.0.3 / 10600.3.18)  today (running Yosemite 10.10.2) on my 15" 2012 Macbook Pro and noticed the download icon that is usually located in the upped right-hand corner of Safari is missing.  I right-clicked on the Toolbar and clicked the "Customize Toolbar..." option, and in the customization pulldown window which follows the download button (icon) is no longer displayed as an option for the Toolbar.  It's gone!
I use this download button frequently to see the progress of my downloads and to pause or cancel them.  Anyone else notice that their download button is gone?  Anyone know how to get it back?  Is this a new addition (or rather, a subtraction) from Safari in 8.0.3?  I'm pretty sure I was using this button earlier this week. Perhaps after the 10.10.2 update the button went away?

    Hello sbunns,
Glad to see your challenge is sorted. Mine is along the lines of yours but for mine, all the icons on Safari 8.0.3 running Yosemite 10.10.2 on MacBook Air 13 inch Mid 2013 are missing. I first got this message when I opened a new page on Safari: "Your copy of Safari is missing important software resources. Please reinstall Safari.". Safari then froze and later was ok but the icons did not re-appear. I then shutdown the mac and restarted and all icons just display a white box. So i had icons for print, share, back and forward and couple of others. I however had an extension that converts $ currency on any website am viewing on Safari to South African Rands so maybe that's the culprit. I'll try take that off and see if it solves the problem. Posted incase anyone went through a similar experience and if they found a solution.
    Thanks.

  • Download button not working in safari

  • Safari 8 download button is gone

On Safari 8, the download button to the right of the toolbar is missing on one of my systems. it is there on the other systems. I tried checking to add it from preferences, but it isn't an option in Safari Preferences, nor in System Preferences. Any thoughts?

Once "Downloads" list is cleared, the Downloads icon will disappear from the Safari Toolbar.
The icon will reappear once you start downloading any item from the web again.
    That is the normal behavior.

  • Cannot select the Safari Download button even though I can see it

I cleared the entries in my Safari Download button (not to be confused with the Downloads folder). Now this button is greyed and I cannot select it any more. Can anyone help?

Most likely problem is that the button disappears 'upon successful download' because your 'remove download list items' prefeference is set that way.  See below.. and set 'remove download list items' preference to either 'when safari quits' (like you see beow) or 'manual.'  Then the button will persist, and you can find the item easily until you quit safari .. or remove all items from the list manually .. depending on which of the two settings you choose.
I like the 'quit safari' option, because I don't have to do anything to keep the list small and usable; it is cleared out every time I quit safari.  And the files themselves persist in my downloads folder if I need to go find them later.

  • I can't move the "Show Downloads" button in Safari 6

I would like to move the "Show Downloads" button that is, by default, in the upper right-hand corner of the all windows that show the toolbar in Safari 6. When I use the Customize Toolbar interface I can't seem to get any interaction with the "Show Downloads" button to stick; dragging it to another place on the toolbar causes it to revert to its previous position, as does attempting to remove it from the toolbar alltogether. When attempting to remove it, it produces the little smoke puff animation that is supposed to happen but it simply reappears in the same place. Is there no way to change this button's location? Why not?

Try clicking on View, then clicking the Show Downloads text in that menu. When I tried that, the button dissapears after you clear them.

  • Download Button not a Toolbar Option in Safari 8.0.2

I'm running Yosemite on a late 2010 MBP with Safari 8.0.2 and the "Download" button with the down-arrow is not a possible option in the VIEW / CUSTOMIZE TOOLBAR section.  Is anyone else having this problem, or can anyone tell me where it is?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Are you running any Safari extensions that modify the toolbars?
I have the download button in 8.0.2:
It set up that way under Mavericks and Safari seems to have kept the same settings for YO when I upgraded last week.
and this is supposed to reveal the download button on my toolbar?
Take a breath! I believe Dominic is giving you good advice. The download button may not appear until you actually download some to go into the Downloads folder--worth a try.

Here are the steps you've been given in picture form:

Find the Downloads icon (in the second row in the image) and drag it to the toolbar.

  • Safari 5.1.1 in Lion: download button disappeared

    Hello,
on this evening has the download button disappeared in Safari 5.1.1 (Mac OS X 10.7.2).
Repair Disk Permissions, to delete safari plist and reset of Safari didn't help.
    What can I do?

Hi, I reformatted my MBP recently and updated Safari to 5.1.1 then noticed the download button was missing.  As per this thread and several others, I tried downloading something to see if it would make the button appear, but it hasn't.  Is there something else I can try?  Thanks in advance.

  • "Activity window" in Safari no longer works to download YouTube videos. Why not? Workaround?

For years I have used Apple's recommended standard technique whenever I wanted to download a Flash video embedded in a YouTube page to my hard drive:
    - Open a YouTube page and click on the video's "play" button to get it started;
    - Press command-option-A to then open up Safari's "Activity Window" which lists all the components of the page;
    - Find on the list the component for the loading Flash video, which is usually much larger (measured in MB rather than KB) than all the other components, and also is usually still in the process of loading, so it's easy to spot;
    - Double-click the component's name on the list in the Activity Window, and voila, the video downloads to my hard drive.
This "trick" is described everywhere as THE standard way to download YouTube videos (and similar page components); and I have used it successfully for many years.
HOWEVER, sometime very recently (not sure when, exactly -- a few weeks or months ago) YouTube has changed the way its pages are coded, so that this technique no longer works. When I open the Activity Window, instead of seeing one large loading video file that's easily identifiable, I see a whole series of large files, all exactly 1.7mb big (no matter how large the file size of the actual video in question is), and they constantly increase in number -- at first there are two such files, but over the seconds and minutes more and more appear. Furthermore, many files with no named size are constantly loading and then disappearing. And here's the whole point: I've tried double-clicking on ALL of these files, dozens of ways on dozens of YouTube pages, and none of the are the video file I seek and none of them cause the file to  download to my hard drive.
If I click on one the mysterious 1.7mb components, I indeed get a ".flv" downloaded to my hard drive, but it's not actually a Flash video; clicking on its downloaded file icon just brings up a blank box or an error message saying that it's not really a video file at all. I think it's some sort of "decoy" file or something to do with streaming Flash code.
To see what I mean, just go to YouTube, load any random video page, and then open Safari's Activity WIndow and try to download the video that way.
This happens on an iMac running Safari 5.1 on OSX 10.6.8, and also on a MacBook Pro running Safari 5.0.2  on OSX 10.6.5, and on a few other new-ish Macs I tested it out on, but failed to note their version numbers.
I'm presuming that this problem is not specific to my computer, but is caused by the way that YouTube altered the background code for their pages. I don't know if the glitch is an intentional attempt by YouTube to prevent downloads, or if it is an accidental "bug" of the new code. Either way:
How can I fix the problem? Is there some other lesser-known built-in way for Safari/Mac to download the new kind of YouTube videos? Or is there some reliable freeware or shareware or plug-in or extension or whatever for Safari that would enable YouTube downloading?
I tried a freeware program called "Evom" that was highly touted, but it too was thwarted by the new YouTube code and failed to extract any videos from the YouTube page, even though that's what the application was designed to do.
As a side note, I will say that I also have (though rarely use) FireFox for Mac, and the "Unplug" plug-in installed on it, and that ALSO "broke" recently and no longer has the capacity to recognize or download YouTube videos, even though previously it worked fine. This is why I think the issue is not specific to my set-up or computer, but is due to a change in YouTube's underlying code.)
Any help with an explanation, solution or workaround would be much appreciated (by me and by millions of others who I assume are facing the same problem!).

    Carolyn:
I just now did exactly as you recommended. Result? No change.
Even after trashing the files and restarting and everything else, the Activity Window and YouTube behave exactly as they did before.
(I had actually previously tried something very similar to your recommendation, and it didn't have any effect then either.)
In case it's helpful, here's an example of what one of the mystery components that load endlessly in the Activity Window is listed as:

  • Safari 5.1 will not download .flv files

After updating to Lion 10.7 with Safari 5.1, it will no longer let me download .flv files. It opens the .flv file into a browser window showing me the contents of the file. This is not what I expected, and it not how it behaved prior to upgrade to Lion. Does anyone know how to correct this? I do see that the QuickTime plugin for Safari shows this file format as a "flash video" -
    video/x-flv
    Flash Video
    flv
I assume this was there before. The only items I have associated with QuickTime or .flv videos is I have the same Flip4Mac software installed (it was there from previous and is current), and I have the .flv file type associated with the VLC application. I the item "Open 'safe' files after downloading" in my Safari preferences is NOT checked as usual.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Interesting. I have the latest Safari and my download button still appears -- actually I tried to get rid of it but can't remove it from the toolbar.  It's showing up in the default set only. I wonder why my Safari on Lion is different than yours.  I have the 1Password extension but I don't think that would affect this.  Here's my settings:

  • On my MacBook (Leopard) laptop: When Firefox offers me Metropipe high speed proxy and I click the download button, it says it can't be installed.

When Firefox offers me, to add Metropipe high speed proxy and I click the download button, it says it can't be installed. I had this on my older Mac, but it did not transfer to my new one.

Can you install from the Safari Extensions Gallery instead > https://extensions.apple.com/
Downloading extensions from the internet instead of the Safari gallery may not be a safe thing to do anyway. I downloaded the file from here > http://ultimatestatusbar.com/    then a dialog asked if I wanted to download from the internet. I for one never download extensions except from the gallery.
I found it in the gallery >  https://extensions.apple.com/
Try downloading from there instead. That will download the file to your Downloads folder. Double click the file to install.

  • Safari and Adobe Reader - document download error

    Hello,
I have Adobe 10.x and when clicking on links to open a pdf in Safari, ie bank statements I receive an error message. I realize this forum is for Safari only, but for review purposes I have tried to download pdfs in Firefox and Chrome as well. The error message reads "/Downloads/doc-9.pdf could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to disk first and then opening the file." That would be great if it gave me the option to save it, but it doesn't. I also checked on Adobe's site, but couldn't find any answers. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
Relaunch Safari. See if that made a difference.
If not, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If that helped, move that .plist file to the Trash, if not move it back to the Preferences folder.
