Safari 5.1.2 private browsing logs you out of current site

Like it says, I log into a site, switch on private browsing, I'm suddenly 'not logged in'
Switch it off, & i'm miraculously logged back in.
So in short not only has safari 5.1.2 completely broken Chrome, Firefox & Unison, it's not screwed up private browsing.
I think the update should have said "introduces new bugs"
not happy & I can't fix it

oops -
I had a 'special' moment.
I logged in before I switched to private - not vice versa.
silly me.
The update still broke everything else though

    Close all windows in Safari.
Now you can see the word 'Private' on the bottom left of screen.

Safari on the IPAD has the following problem.
When set to private browsing and only accept cookies from sites I visit does not retain them after I shutdown Safari and then later restart it. I also found out that even if I leave it in background and close the cover of my case it will not retain the cookies even though I did not deactivate it.
Things like email Ids and cookies that contain site specific favorites get deleted.
Here is a site where you can set a series of favorites which get stored as cookies.

  • Safari Private Browsing Logs Me Off Sites

If I am logged into sites like gmail, facebook, bankofamerica, etc, and then turn on private browsing in Safari, I am logged off those sites and cannot log back in until I turn off private browsing. Is this supposed to happen? I would think that one of the main reasons to use private browsing is to cover your tracks when using these types of sites especially. Thanks,

With iOS 7 on the iPad, you turn Private  Browsing on and off by tapping the URL field.  The screen that  opens up has your bookmarks on it.  In the bottom left corner is a hot button marked 'PRIVATE'.  Tap on the word 'PRIVATE' to turn private browsing on or off.  Yeah, there aren't any instructions anywhere that I can find to do this, and if you follow Yahoo's instructions, they don't work.  This doesn't happen with the previous Apple OS, and you can restore your iPad to the older OS.

  • How can I set my safari to default to private browsing?

How can I set Safari to use Private Browsing as its default?

Use Firefox instead it allows this (and much more)

Install the add-ons of Ghostery (set to delete Flash and Silverlight cookies), Ad Block Plus, TrackMeNot, Click&Clean, and HTTPEverywhere that should keep your machine always clean everytime you quit.

  • Private Browsing: when you turn it off, How are files deleted?  Shredded?

When you turn off private browsing in Safari, are the history etc files just deleted? Or are they shredded/overwritten?
    I have v2.0.4
    Thanks.

    Hi again William!
There is a tempory tracking of certain items...but when you quit Safari they're gone. Of course that's what you trying to figure out is how they are removed. I really can't answer that...but as a general rule whenever I've used private browsing and come back to Safari later after a restart there is no trace of data. If you want to be extra sure you can always reset Safari after using it. There is a folder Safari in your Users/Library/Caches folder...you can make a few tests if you like and monitor when something is added to it or not. But again my experience is reliable when coming to private browsing and resetting of Safari...for what it's worth!

  • Updated Safari 5.1 and private browsing not working properly

I updated my Safari 5.1 last week and was testing the different functions.  When I go into private browsing it will keep some web pages private but not others, they show up on my history file/page.  I can not find the "new" location for deleting cookies in the preference section.  Is anyone else experiencing these problems?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Carolyn,
I removed all website data, put my browser on privacy and it still records certain websites I visited and shows up on the history page.  Is there a problem when I updated Safari last week.  I didn't have this issue before the update.
    Thanks!

  • Safari 5 logs you out of websites

Safari 5 has been logging me out of several websites including: Gmail, Youtube & Flickr.
In the case of Gmail & YT my account are linked, I leave Gmail open and start using YT. Just now for example I wanted to like a video or add it to my faves and I got a "Sign in to perform this operation" message, but I didn't log out of gmail or youtube!!!!! Or I'm in YT, then I want to check my gmail and it asks me to sign in. In both cases I had to log in again. Also, this morning I was looking at some pictures from my contacts on flickr which were limited to "Friends", I finished seeing one, clicked on the another & I got a "You must be signed in to view this content" message!!!!! Again, I had NOT signed out of flickr!
Is anyone else having this problem??

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) Select Passwords on the left.
Delete the keychains related to the sites you are having problems accessing.
In Safari, from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Autofill tab. Make sure: User names and passwords is selected. Now click the Security tab in the Preferences pane. Click the Show Cookies button. Delete all cookies for those sites.
Relaunch Safari. Sign into Gmail as usual with your user name and password. When prompted, click Yes. Same for any other site such as YouTube...
Also, if you didn't repair disk permissions after updating to Safari 5, do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Safari 5.1 Win 7 constantly logging me out of websites, WebKit2WebProcess.exe crashes

Finally updated to 5.1 last night, Safari now contantly logs me out of various webistes (gmail, facebook, youtube, google, hotmail, kotaku, ign, gamespot, and practicvally every website that requires log in). Also, some websites (facebook and gmail) keep telling me I have my accept cookies setting tuned off, when it's set on "only from sites I visit", had to set it to "always" before I can log in.
Also, every now and then something called "WebKit2WebProcess.exe" crashes, but it doesn't seem to effect browsing in general. But both of this problems never happened with 5.05, so I thought switching back to 5.05 should solve this.
And it doesn't, switched back to 5.05, then to 5.04 and back to 5.05 again today, only the "WebKit2WebProcess.exe" crashes stopped. Logging out bug now also happens with older versions of Safari. I tried clearing caches, cookies, and resetting Safari, nothing works.
Maybe a separate software essential to Safari thats updated with the 5.1 update, is causing the bug; and reverting back to 5.05 and 5.04 doesn't revert this buggy software? Perhaps its a software that has something to do with cookies?
I HAD TO TYPE THIS POST TWICE, BECAUSE  BY THE TIME I FINISHED TYPING THE FIRST TIME AND CLICKED "POST MESSAGE", SAFARI HAD LOGGED ME OUT. WHEN I PRESSED "BACK", THE AUTOSAVE ONLY SAVED HALF OF THE FIRST PARAGRAPH!!! THIS BUG IS NOW DRIVING ME NUTS!!

Make sure after running Programs: Uninstall that those directories are cleared, you should not need to do so manually.
You do know your OS don't you?
And I repeat my recommendation to invest in free or commercial (and test it too) with "clone OS" of your choice for backups.
You're fine. Apple installed all that and can be uninstalled, and reinstalled.
But.... I was also this would allow you to reinstall, and install an older version. Otherwise the older version will not "downgrade" or touch a newer application support library, not usually, and not in fruitville.
I left iTunes - I said that in the post you are replying to.
I have not, and will not, bother with Safari again, ever. It looks nice, and easy to read which I like, but I spent too much time - they should tell customers or have a real public beta and have an extra million people kick the tires for a month or two first.
Safari also behaves different on the Community Forums in ways that IE9 and Firefox do not, but not enough to pull me over, which was my main reason, and that 5.1 was a major security update, as is the latest QuickTime version for Windows.
They should install and function better if you start from a clean slate (start from scratch), same as how things work and feel after a clean install - which is true of any platform or OS.

  • I need to get a list of sites I've visited from my home desktop computer while in private browser mode. I need all sites from 2011 & 2012

I need to get records of websites I visited for 2011 & 2012 while private browsing on Mozilla firefox. The info page said although this info would not be recorded onto my computer there would be records of these websites through the Internet provider. How do I obtain these records?

Your ISP's systems keep a running record of all requests and responses through your internet connection. How long these are preserved will vary. Please note, however, that these records might not be available to you even though you are their customer; they might limit access to law enforcement or other requests accompanied by a subpoena. You could contact your service provider and see what they are willing to do for you.
Note: Your ISP would have no idea which requests were made in regular browsing mode versus private browsing mode because it looks identical from where they are. You would have to figure that out for yourself.

  • Browser Logs me out...

I'm trying to use my businesses billing application using the Blackberry browser but after I login and then move to another page it logs me out...
I have set the browser to accept cookies and such, cleared the cache and things but it just will not keep me signed in.
Does anyone have a remedy for this?
    Thanks
