Safari 5.1.3, Facebook, and 10.7.3

Using Flash 11.8.800.94, my wife's MacBook Pro 10.7.3 with Safari 5.1.3 (7534.53.10) occasionally has trouble posting comments on her news feed, even when other posts are showing up.
The Develop menu shows WebGL is off.
When she posts to a friend's news feed the content of her post doesn't appear after hitting return.
I'm not about to upgrade her, since everything has worked fine till now.
Do you think Java needs to be installed?  If you do, I think it might be too much of a security risk.  Here are the settings we have now in security & privacy.
Any idea if any of these are creating a problem, or are Facebook's servers messed up, or are they really not supporting the browser in some manner?

I never disable Java and have never had a problem.
As far as updating, Apple's policy ...
Periodically, Apple releases free updates to your computer’s software. You can check for updates manually or set your Mac to check for updates automatically. These updates include important security updates that protect your computer from potential threats.
From here >  OS X Mountain Lion: Keep your Mac up to date
Same policy applies to any Mac OS X.

My MacBook Pro won't load any websites on Safari (except this site, Facebook and Google). Opera and Mozilla Firefox won't load any sites whatsoever. I already did the "Reset Safari" several times, restarted the computer half a dozen times, and I can't find this alleged "caches.db" file to delete. I virus scanned the computer with Sophos, Avast, and iAntiVirus and it looks clean.

Is iAntiVirus the best virus protection to use for a MacBook?
The best anti-virus protection is your own common sense, and what you already bought and paid for with your Mac. Third party products such as "iAntiVirus" convey no additional benefit, and as you already determined are very capable of causing trouble.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Apple Safari Logging out of Facebook and Twitter

Any particular reason that Apple Safari is logging me out of Facebook and Twitter every so often? I have checked in common settings places and haven't found anything that should be deleting browsing history, cookies, etc. when I close the application. Yet it seems to happen too often.

Log out from Facebook. You can do this by clicking the downward facing arrow to the right of Home top right side of the Facebook window.
From your Safari menu bar top of your screen click Safari > Empty Cache
Now back to the menu bar again, click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab then click Details.
Type    facebook   in the search field  then click Remove All > Done
Quit then relaunch Safari and go to Facebook.
    You should see this:
Enter your username and password and make sure to select:  Keep me logged in then click Log In.

  • Safari doesn't open facebook and yahoo for a week now. What should I do?

It only started last week.  Everytime I go to www.facebook, safari won't let it load, it kept on saying that "the server is busy, there was a problem, etc..." I cleared my cache, cookies, and everything.  Then once I go back again, facebook will load, then I will be able to sign in, then after signing in, it suddenly froze up and i couldn't click anything.  I'm sure I didn't do anything, and I don't know why it kept on doing that.  Then 3 days ago, that same thing happen to www.yahoo.com.  every time i go to yahoo, safari won't load at all.  What do you think is the problem? I've read the other discussions here about safari not opening facebook or yahoo.  I tried the delete cookies, database, etc., but it still doesn't work... Anyone who can help will be appreciated!

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.

    Ok...
Time to get out your install disc, run the Disk Utility app and check the startup disk for errors.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.

Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

IOS 8 - pictures not uploading in safari for facebook and other websites? I just upgraded to IOS 8 on my iPad 3 retina display and when I try to upload pictures in safari for facebook, the picture upload just stalls and never completes. This happens in other sites as well. How can I fix this? Is anyone also experiencing this issue???

Hi Hindhaughlee, <br />Thanks for the post.
This may not be the best place to post such a solution but maybe some users will find it. If it turns out to be a major problem with a simple solution maybe we will manage to document it somewhere.
Are you able to provide more details please:
    * exactly what software and software versions is the problem with ? <br /> You appear to be a Windows 8 user, but presumably the Kaspersky software may be applicable to other Windows versions, which Kaspersky software is this tested with ?
    * What is he exact error message or warning that Kaspersky generates in this situation ?
    * is the problem documented elsewhere, preferably in a public open site, if so maybe you could provide a link
    * can you detail simple but exact detailed Steps To Reproduce that will enable others to test out this problem and solution.
    Cheers

    P.S. <br />
Anyone with this problem finding that the solution works may wish to vote for this thread and solution. Or if someone else can produce links to examples of this or you are able to give precise Steps To Reproduce please add a post of your own.

  • Facebook and Twitter thumbnails on Safari doesn't working!!!!

Does anybody know why the thumbnails on Safari's top sites of facebook and twitter doesn't work??
I mean, when I open my Safari's top sites, i can see all my top sites with their respective pictures/thumbnails except for the facebook and twitter pages.

Somebody told me it's because Facebook and Twitter, are protected sites or something like that... But i'll try what you say, hope it works...

  • My Facebook and Safari are now "stuck".  I can't scroll and the screen is darker that normal.

My Facebook and Safari are both "stuck".  I cant's scroll or open anything plus the screen is dark (not black).  What did I do?

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History). Then try closing the app completely : from the home screen double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it  (and Facebook app if you are using that and not accessing it via Safari), and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Why does safari freeze on Facebook whenever I scroll to a video? This only happens in Facebook and only when I scroll to a video.

Why does safari freeze on Facebook whenever I scroll to a video? This only happens in Facebook and only when I scroll to a video.

    Hello,
Most videos on the internet are played using the Adobe Flash plugin.
Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.
In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:
    * [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems]]
    * [[Flash 11.3 crashes]]
    * [[Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox]]

  • Safari quits on Facebook and Yahoo all the time

Just bought my first iMac and I love it except...My wife uses Facebook and Yahoo all the time and guess what, Safari constantly quits on her. If anyone has any helpful hints, I would appreciate it.

    Hi and welcome...
Even though your iMac is new, you may need software updates.
Click the Apple () menu (top left in your screen) Software Update ...
If you install updates, repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done.
If you see any warnings re: SUID messages, they can be safely ignored, information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US

Restart your iMac. Launch Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete the Yahoo and Facebook cookies.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
If Safari crashes again, click Safari / Preferences - Extensions. Turn that OFF. Restart Safari again.
If nothing has helped, post a crash log.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

Where did you get the device?  Is it possible that it has an IT policy on the device blocking Facebook and/or Facebook options?  Look in Options >Security Options >General Settings (actual menu paths vary with OS version) and see if there is any reference to IT policy.
