Safari 5.1.4: Gmail, youTube, Amazon bug [64bit doesn't help]

I upgraded to Safari 5.1.4 yesterday morning, but I've encountered some kind of auto-refresh bug. Gmail, youTube, Amazon even Apple Support autorefresh themselves 4-5 times then come up with a "Safari cannot display this page" error. They're totally unusable, and I'm sure its just the "Tip of the iceburg"
I've tried the 32/64bit change, but that hasn't helped, and Time Machine won't let me restore a previous version of Safari.
I know the latest version fo Safari is causing some Gmail problems, but this isn't the same. I can see and access my email for brief seconds before the page refreshes and the cycle begins again.
Can anyone help me? I'm not sure what else to do to fix or research this.

Problem fixed: Tried cleaning out my extensions [again], and Disconnect is causing the crashes. Shame really, good extension.

    About my MacBook Pro =
Processor  2,4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Test. If there's no change, see below.
    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the  Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.
    2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

  • Update Safari 3.1.1 disables youtube and flash viewing in general

There appears to be a theme emerging on these forums of updating safari 3.1.1 causing youtube and flash video content to not display even after uninstalling Flash and reinstalling.
I have tried to reinstall 10.4.11 combo update as well as Safari 3.1.1 which always fails. I recently had to do an archive and install.... and computer was working beautifully with Safari 3.1 now after update BUG City!!!! Mozilla and Netscape work just fine with flash content. I have deleted plist Safari... repaired permissions etc, etc to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas at all???? This is really annoying Apple.... do you hear me?

Just to let you all know I had to ...unfortunately..... archive and reinstall my OS ..again for the past time in two weeks...to fix the problem. I now have everything working again with Safari except I have yet to update with 3.1.1. (I now have version 3.0.4.) I have re updated to 10.4.11 combo PPC still no problem but I am definitely fixing permissions after each update and checking things more meticulously. I'm not sure if I should update to 3.1.1..a little gun shy now. Anyway, I tried every thing posted to fix the problem and the reality is that Archive and Install was the only fix that really worked. Sorry!!! The update with 3.1.1 originally looking at the reports must have corrupted the Webkit and core systems in OSX. Any feedback I hope this helps all of you with the same problems with Safari. Let me know. Thanks for listening to me VENT!!!!

  • Gmail, Youtube, facebook compatibility

Is there anyway to maintain compatibility with Gmail, Youtube, FB, etc on a PPC-based ibook running Tiger (OS 10.4.11). Since about a week ago I am getting a message from Gmail upon log-in that my current browser Firefox (v 3.26.7) is no longer supported (the message 2 weeks ago was slightly different) and there are no newer Firefox versions comaptible mith my machine. Today I went to Youtube and discoved videos were not viewable, only the audio comes through. I tried downloading the current version of Chrome but it's for Intel only. I'm having trouble finding older versions that might be installable. Even if I find one I suspect they may not work. For the past year youtube videos posted in FB have been unviewable from within the FB interface so I kind of knew this compatibility stuation was coming to a head. Even if I upgrade my OS to Leopard I still have the hardware issue, of being a non-Intel-based Mac.

    Hello,
You correct in regards to Leopard, it would only update your software so far as vendors like FireFox have drop future support for PPC based macs.
There are some options open to you though.
You can upgrade to Leopard and install Camino or Tenfourfox web browser. I'm currently using Camino and it seems to work fine on My G4 PowerBook. Granted the payback of Youtube is not very good, but I downloaded youview app which solves that problem and youtube videos are fine. These web browsers work fine with Gmail.
Have you also considered using Mail (application in Mac OS X) to run your Gmail account, to send and receive emails?
Or, you could simply buy a new MacBook which is Intel based.
The upgrade to leopard wont be a cheap option, the retail disk from Amazon and other vendors are not cheap. You could try Camino on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
    Best of luck

Looks like Takohashi figured out that UNchecking "Open in 32-bit mode" under "Get Info" should do the trick: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17843743#17843743.
Would be curious if this helps solve your issue, too..?

  • Cant get Safari or Firefox to open youtube website anyone else having this problem?

I can't get safari or firefox to open youtube website, keeps saying server not available and it has been doing it for a month. Anyone having this problem?

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
You can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue you can open Firefox in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
    Thank you.

  • Firefox homepage changed. Lost Icons for Gmail, YouTube, etc that use to appear on the home page. How do I get them to appear back on the Firefox homepage?

A week ago, my Firefox homepage changed and I've lost the ability to have Gmail, YouTube, etc appear at the left top of the homepage. I tried to reset by going to settings and set the default but still can not figure out how to get Gmail, YouTube, etc to appear on the homepage.
    Thank you,

Is your home page now https://www.google.com/ ?
If you are missing the traditional "black bar" at the top of the page, that has been replaced with an application button on the right side that looks like a grid of small squares. Some creative developers have posted add-ons to restore the old bar. I haven't tried these myself:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/proper-menubar/ Proper Menubar]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/you-google-bar/ +You Google Bar] - reviews indicate some problems

  • Safari has problem downloading gmail attachment with chinese filenames

When using safari download attachments in gmail, the downloaded filenames are corrupted. all Chinese characters changed to ?
    For example ???.doc

Same issue here! Unsolved after YEARS of this issue.
I dig through the downloads folder and paste a copied file name at least 15 times a day.
And Mountain Lion was supposed to be a big push for Chinese language users. Still a fail.
Really want to be a Safari supporter - would love to see this solved, Apple.

  • SAFARI WILL NOT LOAD GMAIL

Safari will not load gmail unless I go to my router, power it off and power it on.  Gmail will then load in a flash ... for about an hour and then progressively take longer until it will not load at all.  I've taken it to a "specialist" for a clean-up and he found no problems.  Can anyone help?

Do you get an "-5990 error" ?
I started having this problem after installation of Security update 2006-007 and as long as I know, the only way to fix it is:
    1) Go to Library>Receipts and send 'SecUpd2006-007Ti.pkg' to the trash
    2) Repair permissions with disk Utility
    3) Re install Mac OS X Combo Update 10.4.8
    4) Insert the original TIGER CD and go to install Mac OS X. Your computer will restart from the CD.
    5) Go to Utilities>Disk utilities (on the Menu Bar) and repair permissions of Macintosh HD. After doing this, verify your HD and if necessary repair it.
    6) restart again your computer from the Hard Disk
    7) launch Safari and try to enter your gmail account.
    Now all must run OK.

Firefox 10.0 on Ubuntu crashes every time I try to access Yahoo Games (Spades, Literati, etc). Every other site I frequent is fine (gmail, youtube, etc). Please advise

  • Getting messages that Safari does not support gmail. I use OS X 10.6.8 with all current software updates. Fix?S X 6.

Keep getting message saying current version of Safari does not support gmail, but I seem to have latest version (5.0.5). Is there an update I need?
Poroblem goes away when I use Chrome.

Several older browser versions and ones that won't be upgraded without
a major system upgrade (a new OS X, if one is supported in hardware)
get similar messages when using Gmail & perhaps other google access.
If you want to experiment a little and the cost is zero, see the iCab browser
that is shareware but runs free with annoying prompt to buy a license, that
can be set to appear as Safari 6 to various web sites including Gmail. I've
tried it, and that does work. The iCab version that I found helpful works in
either PPC or Intel Mac OS X 10.5 ~ 10.7, there is a later version, too.
There is a recent iCab v.5.5 or an older iCab 5.1.1, since you could use
the more recent, I'd suggest that version over the older one which I have.
See http://www.icab.de/dl.php for iCab 5.5 (30.10.2014  or note a direct
DL link to that, here: iCab_5.5_Intel.zip -- either version is 32/64 bit.
Hopefully you can use the additional options without an OS X upgrade
to later system such as Lion. Sometimes an upgrade goes fine, but
there are good reasons to make a fully bootable clone on external HDD.
Then you could revert to a working copy of what you had before upgrade.
PS: If you are seeing two Safari versions in the Application folder, you
could use Get Info on each (separate, highlight one at a time) to find
what one is newest; then put the older one in Trash. Do not delete it yet.
The icon for Safari in the Dock may need to be replaced by dragging
the new Safari into the Dock, after dragging the old icon out of it...
but generally that part should not be necessary if only one Safari is
in the Applications folder. Be sure to not leave an app in the desktop
when it should be found by OS X in the Application folder.
The newer Safari should be in the Applications folder. Is it?
Check the Downloads folder in the Dock, to see where it went.
    Sometimes, the browser's download info will show a history;
you can choose where downloads get stored.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    The user guide says:
Movies viewed in Videos and YouTube appear only in landscape orientation. Street views in Maps
also appear only in landscape orientation.
Do you have the scree orientation lock turned on? If on there is a circular arrow icon with a padlock inside next to the battery charge icon in the upper right.

Anybody else getting this???: 5.1.5 will NOT play any videos on Ytube at full screen. Small player & the new mid size player are no problem, but clicking on the full screen button has no effect.

Most YouTube content requires the Flash plugin...
Try deleting Flash cookies >  Flush.app – Flash Cookie Removal Tool For OS X | MacHacks.TV
If that doesn't help, uninstall then reinstall a fresh copy of the Flash plugin >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
