Safari 5.1 completely broken under Lion

After what I thought was a smooth upgrade to Lion on my 27" iMac I now and stuffed
Safari will not load webpages. It just sits there with a small bit of blue in the url bar
It is not an internet problem as Opera works fine from this Mac.
I ahve reset safari and cleared the cache..still no joy.
Any help appreciated
Dave

I would submit that your assertion that no one can use Safari in Lion is a misnomer. I have been using it just fine since my upgrade to Lion last night.  I am going to have to figure out how to selectively turn off Resume for Safari, but other then that, I have had no issues with Safari 5.1.
Any sort of discussion group on the Internet is going to be rife with the complainers, luddites, and those who did not read before taking the upgrade.  To be certain, there will be those with genuine problems or questions about how to do something. But, to use this data to assume that no one can use Safari is gross hyperbole and a mis-statement of the issue.
Now, to be sure, Apple will have to look at the data coming in from users who have upgraded to Lion or Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard and if the see some issues there, I am sure they will address them as soon as they can.
To that end, I would encourage any one with real issues to submit that to Apple Support as well as submit their feedback directly to Apple via the established feedback system.

  • Youtube is completly broken under firefox.(chrome/IE works normally)

Hello, since a day or two (22/nov/2013) youtube is not displayed proprely, in fact the whole page is a real mess and its unusable under firefox. I had to use chrome to watch videos today because of that.
I have the latest flash updates, same goes for firefox.
I made a screenshot of the whole things, but it doesnt seem like I can include it to this post.

A short time ago, Youtube changed its page navigation model from loading the entire page when you click a link to modifying the contents of the current page (similar to how instant prediction results work in Google search). Since the page will lay out correctly for you on reload, it suggests that something is interfering with the normal operation of the scripts that modify the pages when you navigate between videos.
Note: If you notice this problem primarily when going "back" you could work around a problem with the in-memory cache by making a setting change. This forces Firefox to re-parse the page and may slow down "Back" on all sites by some milliseconds. Here's how:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers''' preference and change it to 0 (that's a zero).
Background on that: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/970863 When I go back to Google search results page, it takes me to a blank Google screen]

  • How do I do a clean re-install of Safari 5.1 under Lion

I am seeing a number of anomalies in Safari 5.1 behavior/performance under Lion (10.7.1).  This instance of Safari has "inherited" something via Migration Assistant that it should not have. One of the most obvious of these anamolies is that certain web sites do not display properly.  Example: http://www.padilicious.com/ looks like this:
No Style Sheets are selected in Preferences > Advanced.
If I create a new user account, Safari in that instance renders this website properly.  Thus, Internet Plug-in are not the source of this issue.
I have removed all extensions and reset everything in Safari.  I have even deleted Safari preference files to no avail.  What I think I need to do is to completely uninstall Safari and all of its related files and then reinstall it.  Is this possible and, if so, how do I do that?

  • "Safari can't find the server" - connection issues under Lion

    Hi there,
Since upgrading to Lion, Safari has been displaying this odd and annoying behaviour, where, for some links to some web resources (like maybe 2 clicked links out of 10), it throws up a grey error page telling me it can't find the server (screenshot below):
Normally, this error would be evidience of an intenet connection issue (but it isn't). If I immediately try to find the same resource via another browser (Firefox or Chrome), those other browsers navigate to the site absolutely fine. Although, occasionally (though with less frequency) I'm also getting a similar "Can't find stuff" error with Chrome too.
In the Safari address bar (is this significant?) there isn't even a URL, but a file path to file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources... what does that mean?
Hints from other threads would indicate that this is a Firewall issue, or maybe there's another third-party app causing problem, rather than a problem with Safari under Lion specifically.
But I'm really bugged and irrittate by this. Anyone had a similar experience? Anyone with any ideas? How might I go about finding out what's causing this and fixing it?
    Best wishes,

It's most likely a problem with corrupted files in the Safari Cache or corrupted cookies.
    Go to Safari menu bar
    Click on Safari
    Click "Empty Cache"
    Restart Safari
    If the problem persists...
    Go to Safari -> Preferences
    Go to privacy
    Click "Remove All Website Data"
    Restart Safari
    Cheers - Lupunus

  • 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing

I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time.  It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive.  My workload hasn't fundamentally changed.  Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees.  Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding.  Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal.  There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping.  Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low.  (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
Here are the apps I typically run:
    - NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
    - Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
    - Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
    - kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
    - WindowServer also reports using 280MB
    - various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard.  But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough.  Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be.  I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes.  (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
Are other people having similar trouble?  Any suggested remedies?  Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion.  Actually, quite a few things have broken.  Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs.  But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much.  But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.

Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
pig.  The longer you are using it the more memory it
    gobbles up.
In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine.  May
help since it is a huge collection of files.  But there have been
issues reported with Time Machine and Lion.  I don't
use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
seperate data backup strategy.  Also, in Spotlight
preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
my Windows VM folders, for same reason.  Unless you really
need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
    of disk access time.
For solving airport issues check this article:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
    can.
Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up.

I have found my own solution, if only temporary, until another Java update clobbers me…
I followed  the Java instructions to delete Java 7 at http://java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml
Then I followed the Apple instructions to get back to Java 6 at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559, which involves using the Terminal application.
Then I closed Safari, and relaunched.  It is now back to where it has been for the past year, working!

  • Need A Fix For Error Message Safari 5.1.7 OS X Lion 10.7.4

When trying to open bingo on a Will Hill gambling site in Safari 5.1.7 OS X Lion keep getting this error message.
This worked perfect a few month ago when i last used it and it opens fine if i use Firefox.
Have reset Safari and Reset the Cache and still the same Error message.
    An error has occurred.
You may need to refresh the application.
Please contact customer support if the problem persists.
Click here to close this message.
    Your session has timed out.
After the current game has completed please log back into the application.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Helvetica Neue Bold doesn't render spaces in Photoshop CS4 under Lion

PS CS4 seems to work great (albeit slightly slower) under Lion. However, I have noticed one glitch that is slightly annoying.
The Helvetica Neue font on the system renders normally except for the Bold variant, which doesn't seem to render any spaces. Even opening an existing PSD that uses Helvetica Neue will render the font the same way. In fact, there's a flash where it's normal but then all the spaces suddenly disappear.
Anyone else experienced this or know of a solution?
    Thanks
    AC

Yes, I'm aware there are always issues - to Adobe's credit, there weren't a whole lot this time around.
I think I was surprised that you acted, in a one-line (also flippant) response, that we were crazy for upgrading our OS "untested". There are lots of other apps that I use in my daily workflow that had already been upgraded to work with Lion, and I'm not about to partition my computer so I can run Adobe's products which, as I was under the impression (perhaps mistakenly), they had already internally tested to ensure compatibility.
Perhaps you're over-estimating my urgency. It's one variant of one font, the only issue I've found running CS4 on Lion. It's not a "big roadblock," and my OS + PS is completely functional otherwise. That said, it is a bug with only Adobe products so I felt it was appropriate for me to report here, in the Adobe forums. Coincidentally, I've also reported it at Photoshop.com's Photoshop support forum, where hopefully it may also be seen. Yes, it might take days or weeks... but that's the nature of a bug and fix.
So basically, I'll wait for the fix. Thanks anyway.

I used Migration Assistant to copy all files, folders, applications, and settings to my new computer. The new computer can't open earlier GB projects I created NOR can I start new projects. Even Apple's own GB Demo Songs refuse to open. My old computer is an iMac Intel Core Duo running Snow Leopard. My new computer is an iMac Quad Core i7 running Lion (10.7.2). The message I receive when attempting to open old projects and demo songs, or create new projects, is the same: "The file couldn't be opened."
I reinstalled iLife and downloaded and installed all updates, but it still wouldn't work. I then re-installed all Apple Jam packs (though some wouldn't install completely in the much-newer environment) and I continue to get the same message, "The file couldn't be opened." My assumption is I need to delete one or more plist files but I don't have a clue where to begin.
I searched the knowledge base and forums but could find nothing about this, but I find it hard to believe somebody else hasn't had the same trouble. I'm hoping it's an easy fix! Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Hi, me too I have a similar problem. I have a macbook air mid-2011, Lion 10.7.2. I have been using GarageBand for a while now, even under Lion. And since this weekend, I can't open any of my files, nor can I create a new project. It says "Files cannot be opened". I do have the permission to read and write, so I don't know what's wrong. I did a test as a Guest and tried to open GarageBand, and yes I can do it. Still I don't know how I could create or open a Garageband project under my username. I have also tried to find my files with Time Machine but still GarageBand cannot open my old files. Any clues? Anyone?

  • Spotlight completely broken even after troubleshooting

Ok , i must say i HATE Spotlight. I always have, mainly because it never has worked fast enough for me, and has been problematic since day one.
Having said that I am still forced to use it to find things on my system but now it's completely broken. When I type in the Spotlight window, it hangs even after the first letter, like it usually does, but now it has added a new trick in that it refuses to find anything at all.
Fine. I'll force OSX to rebuild the database.
Go into terminal, type in the appropriate command that 100 billion posts in discussion say to do, and I get nothing. It does nothing. No rebuild. Nothing. I check Activity monitor to see if it's working. Nothing. This is also after I've trashed the prefs and Spotlight refuses to even build a new prefs file.
So, I go to System prefs, open the Spotlight tab, and try to drag my volume to the privacy window to get it to dump the dbase. The volume never shows up. Try adding it using the button. Nothing.
I trashed the Finder prefs too, and at least that fixed the problem with Finder locking up every time I did a Get Info on a file, but didn't help Spotlight at all.
One other minor good thing is, once I trashed the Spotlight prefs, at least now my system will reboot in under 5 minutes time, since I'm sure that Spotlight was the cause of that problem as well.
Dear Apple. Spotlight *****. In the meantime can someone offer other suggestions BESIDES reinstalling Tiger. Thanks.

    Bryan,
I don't know about you but re-installing the entire OS should only be a desperate last measure. I haven't done it in years, and hope never to have to, since it would require at least a full day of my time, what with finding all the upgrades (on a dialup connection !!!), installing them, and then re- inputting all my data into the various places where it's needed. And yet that's what we now regularly find TIger users advised to do, just because of one dumb thing: Spotlight. And even if you DO go down this route and re-install Tiger, it's a sure bet something will go wrong again with Spotlight anyway.
ONe of the simplest, quickest things any computer user needs to do is find a file, any file, fast, and then get on with whatever it was they needed the file for. Apple seems to think we find the process so fascinating that we could spend the whole day doing it.
Try Easyfind instead of Spotlight. It's far from ideal but as things stand with the Mac OS, it's the only way to find your files.
You can download it from here
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
Oh, BTW, did you know that in a desperate attempt to make Spotlight work, Apple decided that it won't index everything?
I hope Easyfind makes your life a little better

Need help on how to set my nnew printer HP Officejet 4400 K410 to work fine under Lion OS 10.7. Can anyone help me?

    I have the same problem.
Apple not yet has drivers for hp officejet 4400 and, after various questions to call center, they get me the same ananswer:  "wait"...
I think that it is incredible: we have a new computer with the most upgrate system, we have a new printer and both are completely strangers...
What can we do? trash one of these and buy another?

  • IWeb 3.0.4 problem under Lion X: Why are my movies unable to play after publishing web-site?

No problems with the above running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Under Lion, I can place movies during the edit phase, set up quicktime to autoplay, and test it and it plays.  After publishing the site, the movies do not play.  Sometimes a note saying that "a plugin is not available" appears in the movie window.  Could this be a Quicktime problem?  The movies were placed in iWeb using iTunes from the Media Display and are .m4v files edited in iMovie. The web-site works on iMacs running 10.6.8, and on PC's.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Thanks QTKirk. Tried the web site under firefox 5.0 and the movies played!  Not sure about the DivX extension for Safari.  There is something called 3ivx on my machine that has something to do with Mpeg.  Could you give me the steps to remove this from Safari, assuming that it is the extension you were talking about?  How would I see what extensions are in Safari?  I'm labeling your response with the correct answer to my problem because either way --- I can always use firefox if I can't get Safari straightened out.  Many thanks!

  • Why does it take so much longer for applications to launch under lion as compared to snow leopard

I have two iMacs one which cannot run Lion and one which does.
Launching applicaitons under Lion takes a measurable amount of time longer to launch under Lion than they do under Snow Leopard.
The Lion machine is newer, faster and larger than the Snow Leopard machine - 4 cores vs 2, however, every time I launch an application, such as Safari or Text Exit as two examples, the Lion machine just cranks and cranks (you can listen to the disk drive).
Text edit is particularly rediculous. If I try to open a text file, either for the first time or one which has been opened by text edit before, I am greeted with the sound of the disk drive and the spinning beach ball.
All hardware diagnostic tests pass with flying colors. Or so it appears as no errors or abnormalities are reported.
This effect has been in place since the lion machine arrived (which was "factory installed" with Snow Leopard and then upgraded over the net to Lion).

That is not normal, but what is going on is hard to say without some testing.  It could be cache-related, if you've gotten some corruption in some important caches.  Try getting a copy of OnyX and clearing caches.  (Note that cache clearing should be considered a troubleshooting step only...  don't use such utilities for routine maintenance.)
You could also have a dying hard drive.  That would not necessarily show up on hardware tests.  Sometimes drive failures show up in advance in hardware tests or SMART status checks, and sometimes they don't.  That could explain the excessive hard drive thrashing.  If this is the problem, there may not be any reasonable solution until the drive finally goes kaput, or decides to change to a detectable imminent failure.
There could also be any number of other problems, such as low RAM, hard drive directory corruption, incompatible third-party software, etc.  Try some of the techniques in the Mac OS X Speed FAQ.

  • Safari can't connect after latest Lion update

Just updated my software and now safari can't connect to websites. It connects for a bit then after awhile it will no longer connect. Firefox and Chrome are connecting fine so this is a safari only issue with the latest update.
    Safari Version 5.1.5 (7534.55.3)
Quiting safari and restarting works for a little while then eventually 'can't connect to server' eventually appears. I'm going back to firefox until this is resolved.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
Hi I have the same sort of problems I carried out the two tests and the problem appears to only be in my profile not in guest profile. Is there a cure?
