Safari 5.1 no longer saves bookmarks

Hi,
Since installing Lion and safari 5.1 I can no longer save any bookmarks, either to the bookmarks bar or to bookmark folders any ideas how to fix this?

Could be the Safari preferences are corrupted ..
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
If that didn't help, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
Try this...
Quit Safari. Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari. Try saving a bookmark.

  • Safari 5.1 no longer saves file origin?

I very much appreciated the file source URL, the internet address, being saved together with downloaded files in previous versions of Safari. The URL showed up under More Info when viewing the file's Get Info window, and could be copied from there since Snow Leopard 10.6. Quite handy. This info was stored in the extended attribute "kMDItemWhereFroms" which could be viewed in Terminal with the xattr or mdls command (file path as argument). Now on latest Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with latest Safari 5.1 (6534.50), it's no longer there. I miss it! Is there a way to re-enable this feature? I saw no obvious option with another Terminal command "defaults read com.apple.Safari".

Amendement: it seems the origin is only lost when saving to the Downloads folder. Save (or drag) to anywhere else, like the Desktop, and the source URL is there! So this is a partial solution. What I'd really like is for it to work everywhere, and especially in Downloads because that is where I normally save items.

  • Safari no longer saves new Bookmarks (OS X 10.8.3 - Safari 6.03)

I am trying to save bookmarks as I always had done, simply no bookmark gets saved. I reset Safari.

Copy the same line of text to the Clipboard again.
Quit Safari. Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
    File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmark folders as you wish.
Re-enable synchronization if you disabled it. If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post again.

  • Still unable to save bookmarks in Safari 5.1.2 - any clues?

Starting with Safari 5.1.1 on Lion I have been unable to save any bookmarks after an initial few hours running when it has been possible. I had hoped that the new release of Safari 5.1.2 might have cured the problem, but it doesn't appear to have done so.
I've followed all the suggestions on various posts and cleared the numerous plists and caches. This results in being able to save bookmarks in the normal manner, but only for a few hours or so. The next time I open Safari I find that I am once again unable to save any bookmarks without going through the whole rigmarole of exporting the bookmarks, trashing all the Safari preferences, restarting Safri and importing all the bookmarks once again.
It's great if you have the time and the patience, but my patience is wearing very thin by now.
Does anyone have any definitive solutions to this problem, which happens on all my Macs running Lion and Safari 5.1, thus ruling out a problem with just one Mac?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch Safari and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

If the previous Safari suggestion doesn't work try the following:
In Finder, go to Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins and move AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin to the Disabled Plug-ins Folder.  Restart Safari.  If this works you may just want to delete that FUBAR plug-in.
Thanks.  This was the solution for me.

  • Safari will not save bookmarks

Hi. Ever since I set up a standard account to use, Safari refuses to save bookmarks. I was able to transfer the bookmarks.plist file from the original admin acct. to standard account. Yet, when I import the bookmarks.plist file into Safari, I get an error message (which provides no advice on how to troubleshoot) telling me that Safari failed to save bookmarks.
I had this problem before with iTunes after setting up a new standard acct. The advice given was to delete the account--which didn't fix that given problem.
    Thanks for any advice.
    iMac G5 w/ iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What exactly happens when you try to save a bookmark?
One thing I always try when an app misbehaves is to quit the app like I describe next then reset the iPad. Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Safari won't save bookmarks, being problematic

This is a query on a friend of my family's MacBook. She mostly uses it to look at her email and has had it over a year without a problem.
The problem start after (and this is my theory) the computer was left on sleep by accident and the battery was drained. I've tried to recharge and reset the battery as far as possible using the support pages, but no deal- it's broke. That's a separate issues now.
Safari was originally starting up with a message that bookmarks cannot be saved and are unavailable. When I went in and tried to save a bookmark it wouldn't let me, and it wasn't saving a history. Also, it stopped loading anything after I'd visited two pages. The Safari folder had completely disappeared as had the bookmarks plist file.
I downloaded all the system updates, which included Safari, installed and restarted but now Safari was starting immediateltly on boot up, and although not giving a bookmark warning on start up was not saving bookmarks. I could browse as much as I wanted, though.
    Console gave the message: 'Exception occured trying to obtain lock to save bookmarks;
NSException [can't get write lock on (null): Bad address] [(null)]. Bookmarks will not be saved.
I downloaded the new Safari, deleted the old one and installed and restarted. It still started automatically on log in and wouldn't save any bookmarks and there was still no Safari folder in the library, no Safari preferences and no bookmarks.plist. They're there when I click on the bookmarks icon, but that freezes the window.
Also, whenever I select 'view status bar' it turns into a white screen where the browser used to be.
I've also tried moving the preferences folder and restarting to force the computer to make a new one, but it makes no difference.
    Suggestions?

I appreciate your response... however, I should have done a better job of researching this question. There are multiple responses in the "More Like This" sidebar.
    Thanks again.

  • Can no longer add bookmarks to my home screen

I can no longer add bookmarks to my home screen.  As before, I get the choice of "Add to Bookmarks" and "Add to Home Screen", and after chosing "Add to Home Screen", I am asked to save the name as before, but the bookmark is not saved (or at least I can't find any trace of it amongst my home screen bookmarks, even after scrolling up, down and to the right).
As I already have quite a few (but not excessive) bookmarks, most in folders, I tried deleting some and then trying to add a bookmark, but without success.  Restarting doesn't help.  Problem was there before the latest software update, but was not fixed by update.
Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

    Hi Carolyn
I have just spent 3 hours reading and looking for an answer and came across your article here in respect of a similar situation I have with bluetortilla.
I recently dropped my macbook and had to have a new diskdrive replaced. I am a total novice in IT and had a long time in resetting and reconfiguring all my information and migrating my back up from my time machine.
However, since then I have been having alot of issues with Safari which I have never had in the 3 years I have been using Mac.
My problems currently are as follows, after each time I quit safari and when I close the mac and rebooting it.
    1.    All my history is not there when I re-open Safari. Only the history from when I last migrate the data from my time machine is there. However, after following the your instructions to bluetortilla, the old history is now deleted and the history of today remains.
    2.    Everytime I add a new bookmark and save a webpage into this bookmark, it disappears every time I quit and reopen Safari.
    3.    Similarly, even when I save a new webpage into an existing bookmark, this particular webpage disappears when I quit and reopen Safari.
    4.     I also deleted some of the default webpage in bookmark bars, but again these reappears when I quit and reopen Safari.
All-in-all, everytime I delete or add into my bookmarks during a session on Safari, seems to disappear the next time I quit and reopen Safari. Previously all my histroy disappear but it seems ok now after following your instructions here.
Would appreciate your advise and help here. It has been frustrating that I have not been able to save any webpages into my bookmarks or create any new bookmarks without it all disappearing the next time I open Safari.
    Jimmy

  • Can't save bookmarks since last OS update

I can't save bookmarks since the last OS update. When I do, I get the Spinning Beach Ball of Death and the app crashes. Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I'm using a Mac / Leopard. I can no longer "save as" an image. Please see the "details" section for more information. Thanks.

I'm using a Mac / Leopard. Beginning about a month ago, I can no longer "save as" an image. The "Save Image As" menue comes up -- but then nothing. I can drag images onto the desktop, but that's it. I tossed out Firefox, and then downloaded it and reinstalled it, but have the same problem. (I couldn't figure out how to get rid of profiles and bookmarks -- so they remained). As I type this question on the Firefox website, I don't see the forum in front of me -- just a window to type a question. So, if you answer this question, I'm not sure I'll be able to find the answer. Thus, if you'd be so kind as to also email me the answer, that would be greatly appreciated: davidfreeman11 AT gmail.com Thanks

  • How do I save bookmark in new firefox release?

The new firefox release does not seem to have capability to save bookmarks to a file. The instructions provided in support seem applicable to older versions. I have saved bookmarks to a file many times before in prior releases.

What kind of bookmarks backup do you want to create?
You can still do this in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) just like in previous versions.
You can find Show All Bookmarks to open the Library in the drop-down list that opens if you click the Bookmarks Menu button that is positioned next to the star button on the Navigation Toolbar.
Firefox 29 and later versions have the Australis interface that looks different than the user interface in Firefox 28 and older versions.
*With the Australis interface the orange Firefox menu button has been replaced by the three bar Menu button at the far right end of the Navigation Toolbar<br>A consequence of this new menu button is that you no longer can hide the Navigation Toolbar
*There is a star like button to the right end of the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark the current web page and a "Show your bookmarks" button next to it to open the Bookmarks in a drop down menu
*It is still possible to have the menu bar visible via the right-click context menu on the toolbars to have menus like the the Bookmarks menu

You can bookmark all those tabs and place them in a folder.
    * "Bookmark This Page" and "Bookmark All Tabs" no longer show in the Bookmarks menu unless you open the Bookmarks menu via the keyboard (Alt + B).
    * "Bookmark All Tabs" can be accessed via the right-click context menu of a tab on the tab bar.
