Safari 5.1 Pin Tabs?

In Safari 5.1, is there a pin tab option, like Chrome and Firefox? I looked for an extension, but I also cannot find a search button in the Extensions library of Safari.

I am sorry to say it is not possible I did alot of reasearch and it did not show up.
How To Optimize Safari for a more Chrome-like Experience
While I prefer Google’s Chrome web browser, lately I’ve been switching back and forth between Chrome and Safari for different tasks.  (Evernote for example works much more seamlessly with Safari, as a quick perusal of the Chrome plugin page will tell you.)  If you prefer Chrome, it’s easy to get frustrated with the lack of consistency between the two browsers but there a couple of tips and tricks you can implement in Safari for a more Chrome-like experience.
Extensions
With the introduction of Safari 5, users can now customize Safari with extensions much the same way they can in Chrome and Firefox.  To install an extension, navigate to the Safari drop down menu and click on Safari Extension Gallery, which will bring you to the microsite seen above.  There’s been an impressive amount of development on Safari extensions, and while there aren’t as many available for Safari as there are for Chrome, here are a few I’ve found hepful in replicating some of the better built-in features of Google’s web browser:
Reload Button by John Siracusa:  One of my pet peeves with Safari is the lack of a proper Refresh button in the toolbar bar.  This extension placing a Refresh button adjacent to your address bar;  you can change its location by navigating to the View menu in Safari and selecting Customize Toolbar.
Add to Google Reader by Rob Wilkerson:  I’ve never got the hang of Safari’s built in RSS reader and it’s always left me frustrated anytime I try to use it.  This extension links the RSS button to your Google Reader account and replicates the functionality of the orange RSS button in Chrome. Now you can add your favorite RSS feeds to Google Reader or iGoogle by simply clicking the RSS button in the address bar!
Tab Support with GlimsOne of my biggest frustrations with Safari is the tab and search support Safari offers when compared to Chrome.  Tab manipulation in Safari is very limited.  By default, users can open and close tabs or move them to another window or position in the same window and that’s about it.  And unfortunately, there aren’t great options in the Extensions gallery for better tab controls.  After some digging online, I came across Glims, a Safari plugin that adds a bunch of features to make Safari tabbing more useful.  (Get it here: http://www.machangout.com/)  Installing Glims will add a Glims icon to your Safari Preferences pane, where you can add or change your Tab functionality.  Here are some of the Chrome features Glims enables that I’ve found particularly helpful:
Favicon on tab lables: This is a nice feature that allows you to quickly identify your tabs. Turn this on by navigating to the Tabs Misc option list in your Glims Preference pane.
Undo “Close Tab”: Unlike Chrome, Safari’s built in Tab pane doesn’t include an undo option.  Glims doesn’t add this option to the tab dropdown pane but does enable the feature through a command key, CMD-Z.  You can enable this feature my navigating to the same Tabs Misc option list in the Glims Preference Pane.
Tabs Re-opening: Chrome offers users the option to automatically restore open tabs from their last session. While you can also restore previous tabs in Safari, you must manually enable this feature every time by navigating to the History menu and clicking “Restore Windows from Last Session”.  Installing Glims automates this feature by default; if you want to more control of when and how tabs reopen from a previous session, check out the Tabs Re-opening option in the Glims preference pane.
These are the tab features I use most but there are three whole tab menu options in Glibs that you can play around with.  Other features include a focus feature for the last selected tab, tab positioning options and the ability to always open links in a new tab.  One Chrome feature that hasn’t been included in Glims that I would like to see is the ability to pin tabs but all in all, this is a very good tool for optimizing your Safari experience.Search Support with GlimsGiven Chrome is a web browser built by Google, you’d expect that the application’s search functionality to be better than Safari’s.  In addition to bettering tabs in Safari, Glims adds some search capabilities that replicate a number of Chrome’s built-in features into Safari.
Customize Search Engines: Glims allows users to change the default search engine in Safari’s toolbar search field and also make your own custom searches from the preferences pane.  The plug in comes with a predefined set of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, Wikipedia, Amazon, and Wikipedia.
Setting search keywords and shortcuts: One of my favorite features of Chrome, this lets you create and assign keywords for specific searches.  For example, I’ve created the keyword shortcut “WP” for wikipedia searches.  Instead of running a search and then clicking from the menu for my result, I can simply begin a search with WP then type the subject I’m looking for, press return and Safari will automatically bring me to that wikpedia entry.  An added bonus of this feature is that it works directly from the address bar, just like in Chrome.
Search suggestions: Glim provides search and link suggestions in a dropdown field similar to Chrome, so if you see the result you are looking for while typing simply click on it to navigate to that page.  This replicates the Google Instant feature option in Chrome.
I hope you’ve found these tips for Chrome-ifying Safari helpful.  If you’ve got any additional tips or suggestions, please share them in the comments section!

• "Pin tab" in Safari

I'm just wondering if Apple developers know about the existence of other browsers, such as Google Chrome.
No, seriously, is it that hard for a multi-billion dollar company to implement pinning tabs in Safari?

To add a Pinterest icon to your Home Screen do the followiing:
In Safari:
Go to the Pinterest Website - http://pinterest.com
Touch the Share icon at the top (looks like a box with an arrow coming out)
Touch Add to Home Screen

• Pinned tabs stay highlighted

I use pinned tabs for Facebook, Twitter, and emails. The blue highlight feature for new notifications is staying on continuously even though I've addressed the notifications. This is a recent development in the last week or so.

• How do I resize pinned tabs/deal with tab group problems in Firefox 22?

With the automatic update to Firefox 22, my pinned tabs have ballooned in size; not only does this look horrible, but it reduces the real estate available for other tabs. While NoSquint has sorted the issue with websites randomly resizing themselves, everything else (add-on menu, toolbar icons) has also increased in size, which affects what can be displayed.
Another problem with 22 is that my tab groups are no longer behaving normally: I click on one group and another group moves around the screen, typically jumping behind the original group I clicked on. Any suggestions for how to improve these problems are much appreciated.

hello, firefox 22 is now respecting the pixel density you've set on a system level in the windows control panel > appearance > display. more information about that is availbale at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/make-the-text-on-your-screen-larger-or-smaller
if you want to set the text size/pixel density in firefox different from that of your system's settings like it was handled in prior versions, enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named layout.css.devPixelsPerPx. double-click it and change its value to 1.0 (or any other zoom factor that fits your purpose; 0.8 equals 80%, 1.15 is 115% and so on..., -1.0 is the default value and will adhere to the system settings).

• Safari hangs on new tab and slows switching full screen apps..

Hey guys, having problems with safari, when a new tab is open which displays all the most visited sites,it lags wayyyy toooo much when switching to other full screen apps, this happens only in new tab and while showing visited sites not when another website is open...i have updated to the latest os 10.8.3,and this just started happening a month back, just yesterday safari was hanging with everypage,i did a full reset and then the same problem, please help..i don like to use other web browsers at all..

I agree with everything you said about full screen apps, mission control and launchpad. For apps that made sense to run full screen, they already could under SL. Launchpad is totally unnecessary and Mission Control is a mere shadow of Expose and Spaces.
However, I feel you have not given due credit to Spaces. The point of Spaces is to let one organise logical desktops for different tasks, not just a way to reduce the number of windows on display. For example, I have a Space for software development where I run Xcode and the iPhone simulator, a Firefox window showing perhaps documentation or some other websites pertaining to software development, a Finder window that is opened in the folder with my design docs. I have another Space where I have the remote login sessions, yet another Space with another Firefox window where I do general surfing and emailing. I can switch between these spaces using a keyboard shortcut, which is much quicker than having to lift my hand off the keyboard, move it over to the mouse, move the mouse pointer over the Dock, find the app and click on it, only to find that it has switched to the wrong window of the app.
Without Spaces, organisation of my desktop is disrupted each time I want to switch task, whereas Spaces allows me to drop everything I am doing, go and do something completely different for a while and go back to my exact previous environment. I have a 27" iMac so am not short of screen space but I use Spaces extensively. BTW, switching Spaces using a keyboard shortcut is a lot faster on SL than the equivalent on Lion, thanks to the gratuitous screen animation of the latter.

• Why does my first pinned tab always load as the google play store when I don't have that saved as a pinned tab? This happens to every site pinned in first tab.

This happens no matter how many tabs I have pinned and no matter what site is supposed to be in that first pinned tab. If I close that tab and close and reopen firefox, the next tab in line that became first now loads as the google play store. I can see that for a couple seconds it starts to load the correct site. Then it loads the google play store instead.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

• Is there a way to close a pinned tab without unpinning it or closing the browser completely?

when i have one of my pinned tabs opened and i open a new tab, i cant find a way to close the pinned tab without closing the browser completly.
is there a way to close a pinned tab?
thanks.

You can also middle-click a tab to close that tab and that also works for pinned tabs.

• WHy do my pinned tabs not come up when I reopen Firefox?

I have pinned my email and internet radio in the tab bar. After I exit Firefox 4 and then return - the pinned tabs are no longer there. Also the "ghost" tab with the + sign (to open a new tab) is missing at the right side of the tabs in the tab bar...where did it go? I have to hit the button in the Navigation bar...dont like that.

Another issue that manually creates this problem:
Open browser with the App Tabs
Open a second browser window (no App Tabs here)
Close the first browser window using the top-right 'X' and then close the second browser window the same way (all browser windows are closed now)
Reopen the browser & the App Tabs are gone.
Although I rarely do this, sometimes I'll be working on multi-windows & forget the order of closing. I solved this my getting the "Toolbar Buttons" add-on [ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/toolbar-buttons/ ] and putting the "Exit" icon in my navigation toolbar & had to train myself to use that to exit Firefox. Now I don't lose my App tabs.

• It's possible to put tittle in the header of pinned tabs?

I have son pinned tabs, but his headers are only favicons. If I need to have some pinned tabs from the same site all of the looks the same.
It's possible to have a tittle on the tab's header like a normal tab?

Pinned App tabs only show the favicon and not the title text to make them take as less space as possible (they won't scroll if you've opened a lot of tabs).
You can consider to create your own favicon or modify the current favicon and use that instead.<br />
That probably only works if you bookmark the link.

• My pinned tabs are not saved. Changed the settings still does not work?

This changed before upgrading to the new version of FRFX. I cannot save my pinned tabs, nor does Firefox open to the last tabs open. Tried to change Settings...still does not work.
I have a new iMac 3.4, i7, 16g for video editing. Its running LION 10.7.2

Well that was odd, decided to check addons and started firefox in safe mode and my pinned tabs were there so restarted it to disable addons one by one but before I could do anything my pinned tabs were back in place. Lets hope it lasts.

• My pinned tabs are not saved in Firefox 9

I updated firefox yesterday to 9.01 and now my pinned tabs are not saved when I reopen firefox. I had hoped the days of having umpteen problems on each update were gone now there is a little one every couple of weeks but no, it's still a pain.

When I restart Firefox, my pinned tabs open to the last webpage that I viewed rather than the page that I originally pinned. For example, if I pinned to a local newspaper's website, navigate to espn while on the pinned tab and then close Firefox, the next time I open Firefox, the pinned tab goes to espn rather than the local newspaper's site.
Additionally, the same thing happens if I am reading an article on the pinned tab. When reopening Firefox, the pinned tab goes to the last article viewed.

Hi don.w,
That is just the way that pinned tabs are designed. They are meant to be left on the page you want them left on e.g. a web mail account.
If you want to pin a newspaper then I would pin the front page and then open any article you want to read in a new tab.
Having said that there is an addon called Tab-utilities which contains an option to automatically revert a pinned tab to the original URL.
I hope that helps.

• When opening Firefox, how can I make nothing besides already pinned tabs open?

I have some pinned tabs that I'm happy with, but I don't want a home page or any other form of extra tab to open every time I start Firefox. I just want the pinned tabs and nothing else. I keep having to close the tab that it pops up upon start.

That is not possible. Firefox will always open at least one normal tab, but should select a pinned tab if you close Firefox with one selected.

• When I start ver 4 the first time 10 to 15 blank windows open and does not remember pin tabs?

When I open version 4 the first time, 10 to 15 blank windows open up. it does not remember any pinned tabs or go to my home page.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.
In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and some features like visited links and others are disabled and not working.
You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing".
See Private Browsing and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_Private_Browsing
You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
UnCheck: [[ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
Another possibility is that there is a problem with the file sessionstore.js in the Profile Folder
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak and any existing files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js .
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore

• Why does a 2nd Firefox open when I click on a pinned tab?

90% of the time, when I click on one of the 10 pinned tabs to open it, a 2nd Firefox window opens up with the tab I clicked on, thus removing it from the original Firefox page (now only 9 pinned tabs). In other words, I have to minimize the 2nd window with the one tab and move it back to the original Firefox page (which then closes out the 2nd window). This is VERY VERY annoying~!

Make sure that you do not drag a tab slightly down in the browser window while clicking.
Current Firefox versions have a feature called tear-off tabs.<br />
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.<br />
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.
