Safari 5.1 won't save preferences

i can't get safari 5.1.5 to save preferences

Hi Scott ..
Might be a corrupted .plist  (preferences)
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.

  • Won't save preferences-Mac OS X

I want PSE to add file extensions to each file name.
    Under Photoshop Elements>Preferences>Saving Files>Append File Extension>Always & click OK
However, PSE will not save that pref.  If I close PSE, then reopen to that preference, it defaults back to "Never"
I have two different computers--both have same problem.
I've tried dumping the Preference folder so it could rebuild itself...still no luck.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

No, this is a bug in PSE 9. If you open the preferences window for any reason, it does that. If you do a prefs reset and don't go to the preferences window again, it will be okay, but only till the next time you call up the prefs. See:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/733634?tstart=0
    for example.

  • Camera raw won't save preferences?

Every time I open the dialog box and select "open all jpeg/tiff files automatically" it instead keeps reverting to "open all jpeg/tiff files with settings" and I do not want the settings option selected but camera raw won't change it! I have edited permissions in explorer to allow full control/access
but it doesn't change anything.....please help

Do you mean camera raw 8.6?
The preferences for camera raw are in
    C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Defaults
    the file is Preferences.xmp
so maybe there is a permissions problem with that folder or the file has gotten corrupted somehow.

  • Updated to Mountain Lion, Macbook Pro Won't save any app preferences

My wife has a 2009 Macbook Pro. We recently upgraded it to Moutain Lion, and now we are having quite a few issues. Additionally, we upgraded to MS Office 2011 from 2008.  Anytime we open most applications, no preferences have saved, and it goes through the process of opening the application for the first time. For example, the only way to open a word document (previously created in 2008) is to open Word 2011, go through the registration process where it tells us the product is already registered, then it opens a blank document. Once the blank document is open, you can click on the saved document again, then it will open. If you close the application, you have to go through this process all over again. This same thing happens for all products in the MS suite.
Additionally, firefox will not work at all. whenever I click on it, the icon just pops up and down and nothing happens. Their troubleshooting is telling us to create a user profile (which I have) under he application support folder, but the folder is gone after the update. Additionally, deleting and re-installing the application has not solved the problem. Additionally, Safari won't save any preferences.
Also, she is the only user account on the computer.
    Any help would be great!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Updated Firefox won't save my preferences; reverts to original settings.

A few days ago, Firefox updated itself to the 18.0.1 version. Now, each time Firefox updates itself, I tend to lose some of my preferences, those being: opening new tabs as a blank page, tabs being on the bottom, and showing my windows and tabs from last time. Usually, though, once I go and change these things back to the way I like them, they stay like that and I have no further problems.
However, this time Firefox won't save my preferences. The tabs go back to being on top, the tabs I last closed aren't there, and these tool bars I don't want keep appearing. Instead, three tabs are always there upon opening Firefox: Welcome to Firefox, Mozilla Firefox Start Page, and Yahoo! Toolbar. Also, when opening a new tab, the page says, "page does not exist" or something, and the URL is not even comprehensible, just random letters like someone bashed their head into the keyboard, something like: "jkfui87$^&%$$09."
I've tried resetting Firefox like it says in the "How to fix preferences that won't save" page, but it didn't help. As for deleting certain files from the profile folder, before I resetted Firefox, I only had "user" and "prefs" and "Invalidprefs" which weren't exactly what that self-helping page asked for so I didn't delete them. After I resetted Firefox I lost the "user" file, but I still have the other two. Should I try deleting them even if they're not exactly like the page describes? They are missing the ".js" part so I haven't felt comfortable messing with them.
Please give me some advice. I'm tired of having to go change my settings in "about:config" each time I open Firefox. But I really don't want to try anything that would delete my bookmarks or history, as I'm very dependent of them.

Obviously no one here actually READS these things, I tried all of that even did a clean install, even uninstalled all user data and THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE!
Your help is completely useless, All you people do is copy and paste the same thing over and over. If it didn't work the first 20 times it's still not going to work no matter how many times you copy and paste the same fucking link.
You have lost a die hard fan of Firefox, I am switching to another browser.
Unfortunately I tried older versions of Firefox and had to go all the way back to Firefox 4 and now the problem is fixed.

Safari 7.02 does not save my preference or view changes

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Energy Saver Preferences won't load

    Hi,
I have a late 2011 MBP running Lion 10.7.4 and under system preferences I cannot open Energy Saver Preferences, Desktop and Screen Saver Preferences and Spotlight Preferences. I have googled and attempted all suggestions with no luck. Here is a rundown of what I have attempted so far.
    1) Verifty Disk Permissions
    2) Repair Disk Permissions
    3) Verify Disk
    4) Repair Disk
    5)  Went to /Library/Cache and deleted the two com.apple.preference.cache files
    6) Used Terminal to do sudo commands
    7) And Finally...did a fresh install of Lion.
Now I will copy my log from Console and maybe somebody can help me out...

    Try this...
    Quit System Preferences
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library"
    and delete these files/folders:

  • Energy Saver preferences won't save, I want to kill my mac

When I change the preferences in Energy Saver, in the System Preferences, to shut down the computer at 10 am, it won't save the change.
I go ahead and unlock Energy Saver (I'm the Admin), make my changes, lock it, and exit. Upon re-entry to the Energy saver screen it shows none of my changes. I tried restarting after making my changes and that did nothing either.
Some number of months ago I told my computer I needed it to shut down at 3:30 am because I often forgot to shut it off when I went to bed. Now it's seemingly perma-stuck on shutting down at 3:30 am when I don't need it to. Frequently I need to leave a download going but my bleeping computer shuts off at 3:30 am in the middle of the download and I have to either start over or wait 5 hours for it to finish when it could've been downloaded while I slept.
This is a ridiculous problem to be having and I can't figure out why the changes won't save.

If you lock the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences immediately after changing the setting, it might not be able to record those changes; in many cases, changes made to an application's preferences take effect once the window has been closed instead of immediately once the setting is made. Before closing the padlock, move to another pane of System Preferences or the main screen.
Basically, this happens because administrator access is needed to write the changes to the disk or PRAM, but you revoked this access when you closed the padlock, which stops the changes from being saved.

  • Apps won't open and I cannot save preferences

I have upgraded to Creative Cloud and have had nothing but problems. First it took my system down completely. I had to re-install my system. Thank you Apple for Time Machine. I re-installed the CS suite and Photoshop will open, but not save preferences, like workspaces. Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere and After Effects will not open. I unistalled them an re-installed. No luck.

Update: I tried Cleaner Tool several times, no luck. I downloaded a trial version of Illustrator as a test and activated it. Same result. In reading the forums I see a recommendation to create a new admin user and try opening an app, I will try that next.
Upon reading the crash report I find this:
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000
A little research finds that it may be a system extension:
    http://www.tempel.org/FindingCrashCausesOnOSX
Since I am not a programmer I cannot be sure of which extension it might be. I am afraid of bringing my system down again!

  • Passwords Won't Save. Outgoing Server Changed to GMail?

None of my three POP mail accounts work now. The password text box field won't save any passwords and I see the word for GMail something (outgoing server?) appearing here and there although I never intended or directly did anything that would put GMail as one of my Mail Accounts.
Note: I saw an older post, 4 years old, about this but thought I'd post again since it was Archived and it's "solution," rather drastic (i.e. delete Mail preferences) and even after I did that the problem continued.
I was able to use Time Machine to get my Mail preferences back and did have clear copy of Email Settings...but it seems now I'm back to Ground Zero: what's my username, password, Authentication, etc. and the old settings I have are not working.
I'm wondering if this is linked to recently trying a Safari Extension for Google Toolbar (now uninstalled)?
Whatever...I'd like my Mail back and for it to remember Passwords and have the correct outgoing server.

Two weeks later (after post, above)
I Solved the Problem - I reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.6 (It was rather painless)
My Mail is working again. Safari now also again remembers passwords.
Also, my Aperture's Mail export also works. (Mail is no longer grayed out).

  • Safari 7.1 won't load large images on MacBook Air. Turning off Auto Graphics is not an option.

When I try to load a large image with Safari 7.1, I get a black box instead of an image.
Chrome and Firefox load the image just fine.
This is a known problem and others have resolved it by turning off Auto Graphics Switching.
However, my version of MacBook does not have the capability to turn off Auto Graphics Switching under the Energy Saver preferences. (I guess I have the GPU or chip or whatever that doesn't provide that option.)
    Are there any workarounds?
Here are two threads about the same problem, but the solutions don't work for me:
safari 7 won´t load large images...
Safari 7.0.1 does not load large images

    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
"Develop" menu will appear in the Safari menu bar
    Enable Images.
Make sure that"Disable Images" is not enabled.
    Best.

  • Safari 4.0 can't save mp3 downloads to disk

I just installed Safari 4.0 without checking this list first. Big mistake. I updated because of security concerns, not because any of the new features appealed to me. In fact I find the "Top Sites" feature intrusive, and just another thing to dog down performance.
But the most annoying thing is that it is now no longer possible to save mp3 downloads to disk, even though I have Quicktime Pro and am trying to save mp3's that are not protected (they are demo's from cover bands put up for just this purpose). The down arrow normally attached to the far right end of the Quicktime bar -- used to pop down a menu which includes save-as-source -- no longer appears. It is as if Safari is treating the Quicktime Plugin as if it were not the Pro version. But it is (I checked that out). I also played around with the mime settings for the files that Quicktime should handle in the browser, but that made no difference, and they shouldn't have been changed in any event.
I can fire up my old G4 and run an ancient version of Safari (1.0.3) and the very same mp3 URL's that won't save-to-disk under Safari 4.0 save fine there. The version of Safari I was using yesterday (3.x.x) also worked fine with the same URL's. What gives?
Did Safari 4.0 break the PRO connection to the plugin? I checked the Quicktime preference pane under Advanced, and verified that Kiosk Mode was not enabled (which would hide the controls), so that isn't the problem.

Top Sites etc. If you don't want the eye candy follow the suggestions outlined in this post. These suggestions lock down Top Sites, Cover Flow and Safari Caches eliminating file accumulation. Apply the one (or all) specific to your needs.
Regarding QT Pro, yes the Save Arrow is missing - been that way since Safari 4 Beta. Don't know why it's AWOL. If the URL ends in .wav, .mov, .mp3 etc. open the download panel (command/option/L keys), then drag the URL into the panel. The file will download.
    Hawaiian,
Thanks. I was unaware that you could download audio or video files by dragging the URL's to the download panel. Works like a charm. I hope the button comes back though, because that is a little simpler. BTW -- I wonder if your technique works even if you don't have Quicktime Pro? If so, people can save $38 everytime Apple makes you upgrade. (Of course, you'll still need it to do video editing and such).
A thought on the AWOL button. I wonder if Apple changed the default for what they consider authored (protected) content? Maybe previous revs assumed that an mp3 or video was not protected unless it was tagged to indicate it was. If the default has changed to assuming all files are protected unless they are tagged as unprotected, then that would explain the missing button. I doubt that most of the bands posting demo's bother to specifically indicate they are unprotected.
I'll check out the link on suppressing all the Top Sites overhead. Thanks for the help!

  • Mail 1.3.11 won't save sent mail

I have a Mac PPC G4 OS 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11. Have used Mail for years, no problems, but now it won't save sent mail, whether it's an e-mail I've generated and sent or a reply. I've gotten rid of most old mail, thinking boxes may be "overstuffed" but no change. I've set up rules to have mail placed in sent, but that hasn't worked. Ideas?

Found the problem. Out of curiousity, I opened Safari Preferences and before I could even think, the first thing I noticed was that for some reason my default browser was indicated as "Desktop DF" (?) whatever that might be (hopefully not some kind of spyware).
So needless to say, I just changed it back to Safari and now all my Mail links open up the way they should.

  • Could not save preferences because the file could not be found (Windows) then Error 1 on PS,AE,PR,ID

I was trying out Photoshop, everything was running fine then one day when I close it I get an error:
"Could not save preferences because the file could not be found..."
Now when I boot it I get the Configuration Error 1.
After Effects still boots, but it reset all my preferences there. For example the workplace layout was reset, all my saved Output presets were removed and my memory-cache and performance settings were reset again.
Premiere and InDesign get the error too and won't boot.
This is the second time it has happened, I'll try wiping every Adobe program and reinstalling all over again, but it had run fine before for a while and it randomly happened.
Any idea how to fix this?

Nope I havent touched the Documents folder.
Forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 7

  • InDesign CC for Mac won't save file

I've been using InDesign CC and working on a document for over a month. Been saving it in Creative Cloud. Have had no problem opening it, making changes and then saving it. Today I opened, made changes and the file will not save. I've tried saving it down and opening in Indesign 6 and it still won't save. I also cleared InDesign preferences and reinstalled InDesign. Still won't save when I open it up. The strange part is I'm able to open on another computer through Creative Cloud and am able to work on it and save back to Creative Cloud. No matter what I do I can't open and then save on the original computer.

Finally discovered the problem. It was a PDF of an ad I received from an agency. Once I took it out of the document I was able to save as usual. Thanks for your help!
