Safari 5 and Support Discussions

Every time I use Safari 5 and try to log into the support discussions here on the Apple site, an error message pops up. It is within the browser (top left corner) and is only text on a plain white background. So, a new dialog box does not pop up but the error message reads: "An Internal Server Error Has Occurred."
I have no problems using firefox or chrome but only safari. I just don't like having to switch browsers to use one website.
Thanks

HI,
Open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities). Select Passwords on the left.
Delete the Apple ID keychain. Relaunch Safari. Login to Apple Discussions.
If that didn't help from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the first 7 buttons, then relaunch Safari.
If that still doesn't help, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
If you haven't repaired permissions since you updated Safari, it would be beneficial to do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Safari and HTML5 media support

    Hello,
I see that Safari only supports the HTML5 audio and video tags if QuickTime Player is also installed on your PC or Mac.
I thought that the idea with these HTML tags were that it sholud not be necessary to install players to your browser.
Will it be necessary to install QuickTime in future versions of Safari to be able to run HTML5 media ?
I use Windows 7 and have just tried with Safari 5.1.1 + QuickTime 7.
    Kind regards,
    Martin

    Thanks for the reply.
I do have Click2Flash 1.6b9 installed. I disabled the option "Play H.264 movies with Quicktime" as it caused problems in the way YouTube behaved.
    Someone else's example: http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=218947&d=1269127031
Parts of the page would just jump and act strangely. I'll try turning it back on to see if Safari 5 has remedied the problem.
However, it does then seem that full screen isn't working in YouTube without having a third party add-on. I'm guessing it's YouTube which need to provide the fix as Apple does seem to adhere more to standards.

  • Safari and browser support

Is there any plugin for safari, or other browser for Macs that will let me access pages that only support Windows IE, or am I looking for something that doesn't exist?
    Thanks

    Hi Louise,
You're on a bit of a wild-goose chase I fear. If the website was created with only Windows users in mind, then there's little that can be done to get around that.
Having said this, there are some sites which accidentlally block Safari and can be gotten around. Try enabling the Debug menu in Safari by typing this into a terminal window (Terminal.app in the Utilities folder):
    defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
and then restarting Safari to pick up the change.
Under the new Debug menu item at the top of the screen, there should be an option to change the User Agent. Change this to be Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 then try the problem websites. This changing of the User Agent is only a temporary setting and will need to be reset the next time you launch Safari.
All this does is get Safari to identify itself to the website as Internet Explorer. If they are using IE only code, the page will still not work.

  • When will Firefox 7 support websockets (like Safari and Chrome)?

A test query to websockets.org echo test gets the result: "...the browser doesn't have native support for WebSocket". The same test using Safari or Chrome on a Mac results in: "This browser supports WebSocket". Same problem whether on OS X 10.6 or 10.7. When will Firefox 7 catch up to Safari and Chrome?

In Firefox you need to use MozWebSocket.

Apple wanted to charge me 50 bucks jsut to talk to someone!
I believe you may be referring to the $49 ASL agreement at AppleCare? That is only when/if you are out of AppleCare Protection.
Can you get to an AppleStore Genius Bar?
They may be able to fix this for you. No charge.
I highly doubt that. There is a $70 charge for troubleshooing software issues, EVEN IF there is AppleCare Warranty on the hardware.
However, since there is no charge for an appointment at a Bar, go make one, and see what options they give you. Let us know how it goes.

  • Invalid security certificate for my website host-they say the problem is Apple Safari and use Firefox instead

For the past few days, I keep getting an invalid security certificate in Safari whenever I select Edit My Site from my website homepage (http://annaporterartist.com), or whenever I select anything requiring a secure log in from my website host main page (FASO.com). I have contacted technical support at my website host (fineartstudioonline.com) and they say that this has been an intermittently recurring problem in Safari for years and they recommend that I use Firefox instead. As proof of this they emailed a link to an Apple Support discussion, but it was for Mac OS X Lion v 10.7.4 and Safari 5.1, even though I told them I am using Mac OS X Mountain Lion v 10.8.2 and Safari 6.0.2. I do not get this error message anywhere else on the web using Safari. I did try Firefox and it seems to work fine, but I prefer Safari and I want to know why Safari is not working as it should be. I am concerned that there is a real security problem with my website host and I need someone to explain why I am getting this error message, what it means, and if it is, in fact, a known problem with Safari or is my website host corrupted? Really tired of technical support playing pass the buck or pretending the problem does not exist.

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.

  • Need to have iPad Safari browser support

OK I know this is hard to do, but I have a site that is redering badly only on the iPad Safari Browser.  It works perfectly in all other browsers on all other platforms.  Any way to get this support?

This is very difficult to do. To solve this problem would require one of the following, each of which has it's own set of problems.
Run the content on emulators/simulators on our servers. Far from ideal since inevitably the emulators will be different from the actual browser on the device and our discussions with users indicate this is not acceptable.
Actually host multiple iPads with custom software/hardware modifications to allow us to control them and capture screenshots to return to the BrowserLab client software. This is a very expensive solution for us since it would require constant replacement of expensive mobile devices.
So, unfortunately, no. BrowserLab does not currently support testing on any mobile devices, sorry.

    Hi rmmilleriii,
You should take a look at [https://support.mozilla.org/kb/latest-firefox-issues#os=mac&browser=fx9 this article] that discusses some of the issues with the latest build of Firefox.
There is some information in there that should help you to resolve your issue. Luckily, it is a very easy fix.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Safari and comcast

I recently moved and had my Comcast service transferred to my new house. Upon reinstallation of my service, I was unable to access the internet on my Macbook using Safari. I then called Comcast and the modem was reset by the tech and that in theory should have been the end of my woes.
Comcast requires upon any install or reinstall that it reroutes you to a captive portal in order for you to login. I was unable to do so and now my Macbook will not access the internet wirelessly. (note- I have a Netgear wireless router connected to my Comcast modem). I called Comcast and another tech had me set and reset my modem and router to no avail. Here is where the issue gets confusing for me. I have an eMac that is hard wired into the router and it is able to access the internet no problem. I plugged my Macbook in via the ethernet (into the modem and router collectively and separately) and I am unable to get online through Safari.
I have a VNC program on my computer and I am able to connect with my work computers on my macbook. My networking preferences also show that I am connected via airport and have an IP address however this captive portal issue will not allow me to get on the web. Please help! This seems as if it is a DNS, gateway or some sort of firewall issue but I am clueless to what to do. I've emptied my cache and reset Safari but nothing works.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*"Comcast requires upon any install or reinstall that it reroutes you to a captive portal in order for you to login"* *"however this captive portal issue will not allow me to get on the web"*
Yes, the do re-direct now for added security but I have Comcast and not a problem here so there's something else going on with your setup.
*"have a VNC program on my computer and I am able to connect with my work computers on my macbook."* If you are using a 3rd party VNC program then that could be the problem. You can do that without 3rd party software.
To manually set up a VPN connection:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
Click Add +at the bottom of the network connection services list, and then choose VPN from the Interface pop-up menu.
Choose what kind of VPN connection you want to set up from the VPN Type pop-up menu, depending on the network you are connecting to, and give the VPN service a name.
Enter the server address and the account name for the VPN connection.
Click Authentication Settings, and enter the user authentication information you were given by the network administrator.
After entering the user authentication information, click OK, and then click Connect.
Select “Show VPN status in menu bar” to use the VPN status icon to connect to the network and switch between VPN services.
To remove the VPN configuration, select the VPN network connection service in the list and click Delete -
Open System Preferences/Network and click the Advanced tab then selec the Proxies tab.
If you are using a Proxy with Safari that could be the culprit. Safari does not like proxies.
Also, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences and select the AutoFill tab.
Click the Edit button next to Other forms. Delete Comcast.com. Relaunch Safari and see if that helps.
If not, Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ Move the Cache.db file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Try using Open DNS / Free - Basic
Also, it would help to troubleshoot if we knew which Mac OS X you are using. Please click My Settings on the right side of this page and complete your forum profile. Thanks!

  • Problem Navigating Apple Support Discussions

Whenever Safari 2.0.3 loads a web page in the Apple Support Discussions, all of the items beginning with "https://ssl.apple.com" return the error message "bad server certificate" in the Activity window.  Once a page loads, some of the navigation buttons don't work.  They include the "reply" buttons on some posts as well as the buttons to go to the next page.  So far, I haven't had this problem on any other web site.
Any ideas on what is causing this?

    Klaus & Ramón -
Thanks to you both for your helpful advice.  My 1st real introduction to OS X was in August when I bought a PowerBook G4.  (On 'retirement' last century, I was happily running System 8.6 on a PowerBook G3.  Forced to upgrade(?) to System 9.2.2 -- to run QuickTax.  Why is it that so many bad things are associated with taxes? [smile]  Bought the G4 after lightning took out the internal modem in my longtime companion.)
When buying the G4, I had -- naively -- assumed that the applications loaded would be the latest versions for the version of OS X that it was running.  You set me straight on that, Klaus.  So, took your advice and downloaded Safari 4.1.3 that same night -- at 4.1 to 4.5 kb/s.  Yes, I still use a dial-up internet connection.
As Ramón anticipated -- and kindly shared, Safari 4.1.3 requires OS 10.4.11.  Calculated it would take the 180+ mb combo file about 12 hours to download.  Before figuring out how to do that, the problem was solved.  Bought a 2nd G4 -- in case some unkind fate happens to the 1st G4.  It has Safari 5.0.6 installed (running OS 10.5.8).
Thanks again to you both for your assistance,
    David
